We've gotten a tiny bit of rain this morning, hooray! I've lost quite a few plants and trees to this drought/dry season...some things just can't seem to get enough water. Hopefully we're in a turnaround time here (of course, I say that knowing we could get a 20 inch flooder...and then I'll feel guilty).
It's Semana Santa here, boats from the big island are rafted up everywhere, and the night is full of music and parties. Campers are in high gear on most beaches, a local tradition here - and anywhere in the islands that Puerto Ricans live (my favorite part of Semana Santa). Stores, restaurants and streets are full. Hopefully everyone will remember why they come to beautiful places and leave only footprints behind. Some very wishful thinking on this Earth Day...

- Culebra February Rainfall
|
- By William Kunke <wkunke787 at yahoo.com>
- Date: Tue, 1 Mar 2011 04:16:02 -0800 (PST)
|
Good Morning, Culebra's rainfall for February was only 1/2 inch (0.50) for a years total of only 1.10 inches so far. This is below normal, even for this dry time of year. We have also had cool and breezy weather for the past 2-3 weeks with some nighttime temps in the mid 60's. I attach Rainfall Data, a rainbow photo taken after one of our brief showers this month, and a early morning photo at the beach yesterday. Lets hope March brings more moisture to the islands, Enjoy, William Bill's Daily Notes & Photos: http://islandculebra.livejournal.com/

We're actually getting some weather that isn't winter perfection, with grey skies and a good rain shower earlier this morning. It's kind of nice, really, and we need some rain. Some rain, not a deluge! But that doesn't look like it will happen anyway (I'll still knock on wood when I type that though).
It's been such a beautiful winter so far, weather wise. I find it pretty hard to imagine the storms that our visitors are escaping from and the troubles such strong weather brings. And the Australian coastal region smashed by Cyclone Yasi... Sending hopes you can get back to something like normal soon, all affected by the intense weather.
We're very fortunate here, and shouldn't forget it.

Good Morning, Culebra received only 0.60 inches of rain for January to start the year. Seemingly locked-in to a high pressure system, with good winds for the past few weeks has really dried out the island. We even had a huge rainbow the other day, but no rain (see attached photo). I have updated my bar graph to show the most recent 11 years of total rainfall amounts for the years. You will note that 7 out of 11 are 40 inches or more. This is a definite up-tick in total annual amounts. Enjoy, William Bill's Daily Notes & Photos: http://islandculebra.livejournal.com/

I can't see it because it's still dark, and the radar is down but we're actually getting some rain! Our little island has gone brown brown brown, I've lost an avocado tree I had growing for 8 years...no water was enough water, for some reason. Trees are shedding leaves like it was fall in New England. But the skies have been brilliantly blue, the waters gorgeously every shade of blue and green. Right now though, I'm hoping it keeps raining for awhile...just for awhile.

Good Morning, Culebra continues to enjoy clear, cool weather. See attached photo for panoramic view of our sunrise this AM. With all this high pressure and "Christmas" winds, the island has dried out quickly and lost a lot of the green views already. Yesterday and today have been cool, wet and windy. Yesterday afternoon got to the beautiful stage so, I'm hoping, with the same start today as yesterday, that we'll get a clearing later on. Maybe it will clear up enough to see the Quadrantid meteor shower?? Hope so!
In the meantime, we did get a nice glimpse of Sol this morning...

Here we are, on the day of the Winter Solstice (along with an excellent lunar eclipse; it was beautiful from here until the last bit was lost in clouds), and we have an invest?? While the chances of it developing look fairly remote - I hope - it is supposed to be bringing a lot of rain with it for those south of us here on Culebra, which probably means we'll get some as well.
Weird. Just weird!

We've been getting a pretty steady, hard rain for hours now. Lightning and far off thunder have moved closer, even as this rain session is slowing down...with more looking to be on the way. Culebra and Vieques have been in a long, long band of rain, a pretty good shot for one tiny island and one small island!
With my yard on a long slope to the water, and the ground saturated from the last few days, rainwater is just pouring through the yard, at least a couple of inches deep. Everything should be very clean by now; it's okay to turn the hose off, Mr. Sky.

Culebra's rainfall total for October is 13.20 inches, making our yearly total 60.50 inches. 2010 will definitely be a record year for rainfall here. I attach the chart showing averages through the years of our record keeping. We have only broke the 60 inch yearly mark twice before, the most recent in 2003 with 67.80 inches. Good Morning, During the night Culebra received sheets of rain, especially from 9 PM-11PM, and then again from 1 AM- 3 AM, for a total of 4.5 inches of rain. That makes a total of 6.5 inches in a 24 hour period. This morning dawns with heavy to broken mixed cloud layers. We are having a break in the rain now, but expect more as this system (#17) moves to the north and drags tropical moisture up with it. There is a definite rotation to this system as the rain would start from the SouthWest and finish in the SouthEast . The ground is totally saturated, the dry creek bed is full and roaring, and the bay is brown from runoff. I have attached a photo of the morning sky, Enjoy, William Bill's Daily Notes &

|
- By William Kunke <wkunke787 at yahoo.com>
- Date: Wed, 1 Sep 2010 04:19:06 -0700 (PDT)
|
Good Morning, I attach the monthly rainfall data for Culebra. 9.20 inches of rain in August is the most ever recorded by us for this month. Also, you will note that our total for the year is equal to the average total for a complete year. So, with two or more "wet" months left in the year, we can expect a very high rainfall total for the year. "Earl"; In our area of Culebra we did not have any structural damage, mostly trees down and the like. We did not have electric or telephone service for more than 24 hours, but now all utilities are back up and running. I did hear we had some costal damage on the southern and western sections of the island, but have not got out and about yet to check things out. Most of
our winds were from the Southwest/West/Northwest at about 60 MPH sustained for about 4 hours Monday evening (5 PM -9 PM), with some gust that I figure at about 70 MPH. We also got almost two inches (1.70) of rain. I figured "Earl" was 60 miles almost due North of us at 7 PM Monday night, our pressure went down to 999 mb at that time. I also think "Earl" did a bit of slowing down at that time and actual had a more "flat" path, meaning west to east before making it's more dramatic recurve to the NW. That's my observations. I also attach a photo showing how amongst the trashed trees the cactus is still blooming. Enjoy, William Bill's Daily Notes & Photos: http://islandculebra.livejournal.com/

Good Morning, Culebra received 1.40 inches of rain yesterday. 1 inch of that total fell in less than an hour around noon time, a real "Gulley Washer". The remainder fell in the late evening as on & off showers. This rain seemed to come out of nowhere, but is associated with a "Tutt" and wave system to our south. I took this photo of a classic "Anvil" thunderhead cloud in the afternoon. It did not affect Culebra, but did drop some rain on our sister island of Vieques. Good Morning, I have attached a chart of rainfall data for Culebra, showing a total of 10.4 inches of rain in July this year. This is a record smashing amount, with the closest year being '95 when we received 7.7 inches. In '95 Hurricane Marilyn came, in case you believe in precedent. We are up to a total of 34.9 inches for the year, and for some years in the past this was more than the grand total. I also attach showing the "super green" hillsides over the harbour. - Culebra, PR Rainfall Data, June
|
- By William Kunke <wkunke787 at yahoo.com>

Good Morning, As you can see on the attached chart, Culebra's rainfall for May - June is at record levels. In fact with 24.5 inches of rain for the first 6 months of 2010, we will most likely set an annual record also. Like the other correspondents have said, the growth on the island this year is beyond compare to other years. Thick, lush, green growth, with lots of flowers & fruits. Very unusual for Culebra. We have always been envious of places like Dominica, now we have a sense of what that is like. I also attach a photo of a bird nest with a view. Good Morning, The Tropical Wave left Culebra with a total of 5.10 inches of rain through the 4 day event. Attached is a photo of our rain gauge this morning showing a total of 2.20 inches of rain that fell in the 24 hour period of 7 AM Sunday to 7 AM Monday. We did experience some heavy runoff yesterday afternoon during a particularly heavy deluge. It is the Summer Solstice and the sun did try to break through the clouds this morning, way to the North. Hopefully we will have a few days of drying before the next rainy wave. Enjoy, William Bill's Daily Notes & Photos: http://islandculebra.livejournal.com/

A friend of mine has asked me to take some photos of her house she plans on renting...we've been waiting for some 'Caribbean blue' skies for a couple of weeks now. Looks like that isn't going to happen any time soon...the color blue IS the color of the sky sometimes, right? I can sort of remember...
.DISCUSSION...MODIS AND SEAWIFS IMAGERY FROM YESTERDAY AFTERNOON NICELY DEPICTED A LARGE AND DENSE AREA OF SAHARAN DUST ACROSS PR/USVI. REALLY...THE MOST SIGNIFICANT THAT I HAVE SEEN AROUND HERE
IN QUITE A WHILE. HAZY...HOT AND HUMID CONDITIONS WILL PERSIST TODAY ONCE AGAIN

Good Morning, Sorry for the bad link on the previous message, here is the correction. Good Morning, Culebra has surpassed it's rainfall average for the
month of May, with a whopping 9.80 inches of rain. We are hoping for
some clearing today, perhaps a little drying-out time. See the chart
below for comparisons of our rainfall data; Bill's Daily Notes & Photos: http://islandculebra.livejournal.com/

- Oh what a day!

Bits of rain on and off and then the deluge came. I sort of figured it would be intense when it got dark as dusk in mid-afternoon, not that it had been bright all day really (except this morning about 5 the sky was clear and the moon was blazing bright). I could hear kids over the little hill playing basketball and wondered how fast they'd be running - but I wasn't going to stay outside to watch - and then bam! With a hit of lightning and a crash of thunder down it came, that kind that hits the tin roof so hard you can't hear anything else. The wind was blowing the wrong way (which it has been for two days or so) so the windows that rarely get closed got closed in a hurry; not before the floor was soaked though. Ah well, a little entertainment and a cleaner floor.

So much for a good viewing of the full moon! Because I'm not in town these days - bridge work = no cart - I don't hear the visitor woes, and we're a little short on visitors anyway... What looked like major rain here drifted off to the east, as the winds switch over and over but right now coming from the southwest and sort of blowing around us with the occasional right on target pour. Meaning grey skies, humidity high, warm strong winds and then night comes. A cooling off before it starts all over again. So it goes.
A photo from this day last year. The sun must have been shining!

Rain and rain and rain. We're not getting poundings here, but on and off steady with the radar showing lots more ahead. Which boils down to our Memorial Day weekend being less than stellar, visitor wise. As it's the last big weekend for businesses before July, it's a hit we'd rather not take, but I know we're sharing it with many other islands. I guess that means we might be focusing more on what Memorial Day is actually about, which is, in itself, not a bad thing at all...
The upside is that the island is going blindingly green, blossoms are abounding and the air is cool without the hanging humidity of the days before. Gotta look at the good side!

Good Morning, Culebra received 2 inches of rain during the night, a small Gulley Washer. It felt a bit like our first tropical wave of the season, with some good gust and heavy rain at times, but the experts say no. Anyway the rain is welcome and all our cisterns got topped-off. This morning the Sun was trying to break through the cloud layers, see photo. Enjoy, William Bill's Daily Notes & Photos: http://islandculebra.livejournal.com/

- Rain and more rain

Watching the real thing, along with massive blobs coming across the
radar straight to our shore door was a wonderful way to spend a
Sunday, including the lightning and thunder, a rare event but one I
enjoy, having grown up in Florida's Lightning Alley. I thought again
how lucky we are to have laptops that can be unplugged and still
used...have movies on cds to watch, so many forms of entertainment
that don't require plugged in electricity. One day I'll hopefully go
back to being off the plug nipple...in the meantime, I'm glad there
are alternatives when I don't want jolts of white light coming inside
to play.
Sally from Grenada, glad your fire got taken care of, even if at the
last minute! Scary stuff.
We'll see what today brings. The weather will decide if I walk or
take the dinghy to town. I don't mind more rain - our ground was so
thirsty.

When it started raining in the wee hours this morning, lightening
flashing, thunder rumbling - I felt such a gladness...until I
remembered the people getting washed out in the eastern mid-states of
the US. Then I realized, I could take in the whole world's weather
disasters - and that thought showed me the silliness of my weather
pleasure guilt.
So instead, I will just enjoy this rain that has already, in mere
hours, brought a life and vitality to the yard and gardens that I
haven't seen in a long time! The leaves are falling like mad off the
genipe and sea almond trees, carpeting the ground, even as new leaves
emerge, bright iguana baby green against a dull sky. Joy joy!

Good Morning, April rain in Culebra totaled only 1.5 inches. This is about half our average for this month. Our yearly total so far is 6.2 inches, again a low figure at this time. Somehow the hummingbirds find plenty of nectar to survive and seem happy. Enjoy, William Bill's Daily Notes & Photos: http://islandculebra.livejournal.com/
