This week FLEW…we had a nice rainy spell yesterday so the garden was watered by nature. The best news for my windsurf clients is, the wind. It’s howling again. www.windguru.cz promises more and more. http://www.windguru.cz/int/index.php?sc=56 Tourist season winds down for me soon as my windsurf clients start staying closer to home. I’d love to expand on my dive clientele. It’s such a great niche for our little island. I think my last read indicated we have over 80 shore dives now. Where else can that be found? Happy St. Patrick’s Day In Memory of my dear ole Dad, John Patrick Phelan born 1917 and died 17 years ago tomorrow on my birthday. He was a great Irishman with sentiment and heart. I miss him still. The day started off cloudy with a fresh wind of about 18 mph but it ramped up a bit at Lac Bay. The ABK Boardsports Clinic was treated to a nice fresh breeze. A squall moved in and all the pros on island training, took to the water to sail. A massive mega liner is in and now Lac Bay has transformed into a people traffic situation. Many sailors got off the water quite unhappy.
Hoping for a Guinness later and a pre 50th b day dinner at Yacht Club Restaurant, my favorite island spot. Tomorrow it’s the big 5-0. I woke to rain tapping on the window. The sky is pitch black and torrential downpours are raining down upon the island. I have a group of windsurfers attending the second to last ABK Boardsports Clinic. Too bad the rain is hampering things. Last night I threw myself a party to celebrate my upcoming 50th b day..hard to believe half century of my life has passed..I look forward to another 50 years of living. Off to clean the storage closet and then get my tire repaired. I cannot count how many flats I have encountered on this island since 2001. Luckily each time the flat occurs at my house. My laundry is flapping in the breeze….the wind’s up which is great as I have lots of windsurf clients on island. The Maasdam is in port so big doings at Wilhelmina Park. I drove by as men were BBQ’ing and folks were setting up their stalls selling arts and crafts. Only a few more weeks for cruise ship season..(thank goodness..)…. Cheers from the Dutch Caribbean. Since Dollarization Jan. 1, I find prices off the charts. The island is very quiet today ….we had a cruise ship in, one of the yucky mega liners. Despite that, Lac Bay was quiet. I had a blissful day chilling in the water and lying on the float. No wind so a good stand up paddle kind of day. Well, the gardens are enjoying today's weather..the farmers are happy
(what few we have)..the wild donkeys and critters are having a nice day in
the rain but our tourists are not basking in the delight of day two of a
rain event. My aloe is blooming and I am happy for the rain to wash away
the dust.

Yesterday was yet another rainy day on Bonaire. It’s unbelievable. The massive puddles around the island indicate we are simply not used to this amount of precipitation. My windsurf client tried an 8.0 meter sail unsuccessfully so went snorkeling.

We had THE best windsurf sesh yesterday! It was blowing around 25-27 knots. I mostly powered up on a 4.2 meter sail and 83 liter board. The wind direction was a little funky but it felt so good to sail. We have had an abysmal windsurf season. Surf’s up and the sun’s out. It’s week 17 for NFL football. I just took the dogs and cat for a walk. The puddles are massive and what’s unusual for our dry arid island are the croaking frogs..there are hundreds singing in the puddles behind my house in the kunuku. The winds are fresh and it’s about 75 degrees. I have a sweatshirt on.. J The sky is gray and everything is veryyyy quiet after a very loud evening of fireworks. Wow, what a night..the stars were out and the sky clear for the midnight firework display..the entire island went off in true Dutch Caribbean style. Fireworks started around 11:30 and I heard them until I fell asleep around 2:30. My poor dogs suffered with the noise and commotion and are now exhausted. Back to last night, I woke at 4 to heavy rain and my bedroom windows leaking water. I called my daughter at 5:20 and she was just getting to her friend’s house down the road. She said the rain was heavy in town and certainly damped the evening’s festivities. My yard is one massive puddle. Today was my laundry, wash dogs and floors day. We shall see. ..and boy, are we ALL happy… The windsurf community has been SO frustrated for weeks and weeks..I was underpowered on a 5.0 meter sail and 93 liter board. Tomorrow we expect more wind. Well, Christmas was a wash out BUT we had fun. Today more gray weather but light winds returned for my sailing clients. The KLM is still running late. My kid’s flight to Boston was cancelled so she is staying a week longer (yaaa)…..We have a Boxing Day BBQ which is typically poolside. Not sure the plan today but we have not had a pool day in quite some time. The sky is very gray and there is a light prevailing wind. I took the dogs for a long walk towards the donkey sanctuary. The massive rains have created temporary “ponds” in low lying areas… We came upon a small pond full of brilliant flamingos. …watching them fly away was magical. We headed back and they had a swim at Donkey Beach.
I would say it’s about 76 degrees. There is no glimpse of the sun at all. We had a little bit of rain overnight. Overall it’s not the best day for our visiting tourists but it’s fine by me. P&O Ventura and I think a Princess ship are in port today. It’s not a great weather day..light winds, humid and very gray. I ran out of propane for the BBQ so was on a mission. There are massive puddles all over the island but right in front of Curoil in Hato, there is a swimming pool in the road. We have very poor drainage hence the puddles big enough to windsurf if we had wind. Speaking of which, my friends the Hibdiges from New Forest aren’t too happy with the current weather. They are windsurf junkies and have hardly sailed since arriving Dec. 11. I have gotten in a hour or two SUP sessions which is fine. I actually love my stand up paddle board. Thank you Starboard..it’s a great toy on light wind days. First and foremost I noticed our salt hills at Cargill are VERY low..in Oct. we had massive hills from salt mining. Someone from Cargill told me this is a bad year for salt due to all the rain. He also said he has not seen this sort of rainy weather since 84. I have had the same load of laundry outside for days. It rains off and on constantly. About an hour ago I had on a sweatshirt! The plane are flying in and out in the “wrong “ direction due to the wind shift. Oohhh..and that blob of weather above us and to the east..what the heck? www.windguru.cz is predicting some serious rain here in the days to come. My kid is threatening to go back to Cape Cod Sunday as she’s fussing with all the rain. The landscape is green and lush. We have had much rain all morning. The yard is a complete mess and the ground is saturated. On top of it, the dogs are covered in tics. Gotta give them a tick bath later. The island is fairly quite but soon we will be tourist heaven. The KLM was two hours late arriving from Schipol due to an ice storm. Our friends from the UK could not land in Schipol so were sent to Dublin and then Newark and come tomorrow at 6 on the Continental flight. What a weather freak show. It’s raining and thundering in Bonaire. We have had so much rain my roof is leaking. Alas, this is a common complaint on island. What a difference a year makes. We had no rain Oct. – March last year! I head to Anguilla tomorrow. There is a high to the south and low to the north squeezing winds and bringing high surf. Pray Carl Thomas from Anguilla Air Services gets to me to the island safely. I left Bonaire Sunday afternoon and had a bumpy ride into
MIA from Curacao and then out of MIA to Boston. My kiddo goes to university
(Boston) Sat. so I am here to take her on to her new life adventure. It will
be interesting to see what happens with mighty Earl.
The heat and humidity here (Cape Cod) is hotter than
Bonaire …phew..
I appreciate the weather updates. It’s not easy being
on an island in the midst of mother nature’s fury..

The winds are light, the humidity moderate and it’s
about 85 degrees…no rain in days. All eyes are looking at the tracking
path of Earl…Best of luck in the Leeward Islands..for now, all’s
quiet in Bonaire. The BBQ spot, Bobbijan’s is usually HOPPING but tonight
it was dead. The island is mighty quiet. Check out my new villa on www.bonairecaribbean.com. Villa
Salentein is a beauty. I hope for a prosperous tourist season come winter.

The trades are back…and it’s pretty strong. All
of my windsurf friends have left the island. They were the wind sacrifices now
allowing for the winds Bonaire is famous for, to return. I am heading to Lac
Bay to see if I can borrow a 4.7. There was a light drizzle earlier. Windguru
is predicting rains this week. We need it.
I am heading to Plaza tonight with some tourist friends to
hear steel band. We had dinner last night at Wil’s Grill. The barracuda
was great. Why is there no Cigueterra in our part of the Caribbean? My ex got
it in the late 80’s eating kingfish at the Yard on St. Mary’s St.
in Antigua. Man, was he sick.

The mosquitos in my neck of the woods are the worst I have
ever seen in 8 years. They start before dusk and attack the face and every piece
of skin. They penetrate cotton clothing as well. No bug spray seems to deter
them. It’s been 3 nights in a row.
No wind..moderate humidity….the Sept. doldrums are upon
us early…

The mossies are out in full force along with noseeums…there
is absolutely no breeze and the humidity is high thanks to rain this morning.
Tomorrow WEB turns off our water for I think the 7th Sat. so they
can work on the pipes. I did my laundry and have buckets ready for the 9 + hour
shut off.
A turtle laid 120 eggs near the airport and 10 babies crawled up to the airport
confused by the lights of the airport (confusing it with the moon). One died
but 9 were rescued and 119 were sent into the sea thanks to the Sea Turtle
Foundation. God Bless these lovely creatures. Someone told me 1 in 4000 makes
it…

I woke about 4:30 AM to heavy rain..I know the time because
I heard the KLM head to Quito around that time…the rain filled half my
water barrel. Nothing to substantial but MUCH appreciated. Back to no wind..my
friends had a full day yesterday but I was not able to sail due to car repair
and then pure laziness….I snorkeled instead…

I woke to 83 degrees..cool and comfy by Bonaire standards.
The heat index has been over 110-120 each day but today it was about 107..quite
manageable. I head to Baby Beach to beach comb where I ran into two surfers
working the waves. I found two sea beads and a lot of junk. It’s amazing
the plastic trash that comes ashore. The most familiar site are deodorant bottles,
the little rolly ball thing in the bottle and bottle caps…then there are

tomorrow. After I had a swim at the Marina at Lac Bay. There is barely a breeze
today. My meteorologist friend told me not to expect much wind in the week to
come.

Around 10:30 I heard what sounded like thunder but the sky
was blue. I checked www.meteo.an and www.windguru.cz as well as the radar on www.stormcarib.com and didn’t think
much would happen. Was I wrong..around 10:45 some light rain fell and stopped.
Then at 11 AM the sky opened up and til now, we are experiencing a massive
storm. Mariner’s alert. Street flooding is intense.

This has been the hottest summer I can recall in 8 years.
Also the wind has been non existent. Usually June is a good windsurf month but
honestly it’s been abysmal. Today there is a very light breeze but
nothing for my windsurf clients to make use of..it’s a snorkel kind of
day..

Someone once told me land crabs meet up and have a “convention”
to trade shells.. Last night I arrived from Saba at 12:30 AM thanks to DAE
being quite late (what else is new)..the yard had an odd clicking
noise..suddenly my dog Luci, the hunter went berserk….there were at lease
40 land crabs all going in the same direction. I captured 30 and put them over
the fence so she would calm down. What is this all about? I found this site

The weather was hot and sultry, not much wind. I counted 5
kiters at Atlantis around 5:30 PM as the wind picked up to maybe 12 knots. The
sky was cloud filled so I watered the yard early. I see signs of Sahara dust.

I wake around 6:20-6:45 to the sun streaming in my bed.
Today I woke to grey and grabbed my readers to see the watch said 8:02!! I
never sleep that late. The poor doggies were forlorn outside waiting for their Momma.
Outside, the landscape was grey and the air was heavy. Rain had fallen, not
much but everything was damp. After feeding the dogs their macaroni and chicken
and canned food, I turned on the computer. I am meant to travel Thur. to
Anguilla and then Saba so am anxious for weather updates. Crown Weather is
mixed on their option. Canadian and European models too. This is one weird
storm but alas, it does have a name and a lovely one at that, Colin.
My friend in Anguilla told me the rains of Ranchipur started
there 4 AM. She said there is no wind.
Meanwhile on the radar, our island has a HUGE blog
suggesting what I see is what I get.
Tourist clients started calling at 8:30 asking me what to do.
Some wanted to go caving but the guide I use said it is too slippery of course.
Next I heard a honk honk outside and saw my neighbor holding a book I have been
WAITING for, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest. I am in HEAVEN. Off
to clean and start my book….

Bonaire is very quiet, very light winds, rather high
humidity and hot. We had some rain around 11 PM and it fed the plants
preventing me from watering. Thank you! I have friends from NY here to windsurf
and they are not so happy. Fortunately they hike and bike so they will have
fun.
I am heading to Anguilla for Summer Festival’s tail
end and Mayoumba Cultural night at Anacaona Hotel. My flight is supposed to
depart Bonaire 8 AM Thur. I hope the weather cooperates as we may have a storm
named Colin by tomorrow.

In brief the trades are howling in Bonaire. It was a perfect
morning session at Jibe City. The water is very shallow but we all have small
fins making it a perfect windsurf day..I have a lunch date and then will head
back for windsurf part 2. www.windguru.cz
promises nuking winds Sunday..cannot wait. DAWN PATROL….
Last night we had a surprise party for my 18 year old. It
was a combination graduation b day party. It was held in Rincon at Posada Para
Mira. I will enclose a nice photo to enjoy.

The heat index according to www.wunderground.com in Bonaire was 130
f at 2 PM. The actual temperature was 101.3. Everyone is wilting..my kiddo and
I both slept with the AC on..the dogs are droopy..it’s a hot day.
Heading to Posada Para Mira in Rincon for a surprise 18th
b day/graduation party for my kiddo. She has no clue what’s going

Bon Dia Bon Siman
We are getting our share of precipitation but unlike my
friends to the north, we are experiencing a light drizzle. I love it..
The restaurants are still doing a good business but everyone
else is complaining. More economical properties are doing better than most. My summer
windsurf clientele is down about 10 bookings which is pretty substantial. Also
we have had abysmal windsurf conditions so I am quietly glad I don’t have
folks sitting here unhappy.
My teen comes to visit Wed. and we head off to Ecuador for
our premier trip. We are beyond excited.

The boats are all pointing south in Kralendijk whereas they
are usually pointing east. The chop in the harbour is moderate with some wave activity.
The winds are light. I think the rains are done…we have a green
landscape. There are more donkeys out ..I am not sure if they are breeding or
some were released from the sanctuary. I am happy for the rain so these lovely
creatures can survive.

After a fun stormy night the air is cool, the sky is foreboding
with a grey cast and very ominous clouds. There is hardly a breathe of air. It’s
a great day to clean and work..so off I go.
The Caribbean map shows a lot of colorful activity. I have a sense it will be a
wet day. Meanwhile the fire engine at the Wallblake Airport in Anguilla is
still broken so AA and LIAT still cannot get it. My clients are being routed to
SXM. What fun…get the darn part people please and re open your airport.

We had rain since this AM and around 8 PM a heavy squall
went thru with a wind reversal, high winds, strong rain and heavy boomers….it
is continuing. It did not stop the Dance Party at Hotel Roomer. What a fun
night.

I headed towards Nord Salina to hike Sera Largu. It’s
a steep incline walk, about 25 min up and 20 down. At the top is a lovely
shrine and lovely island views. At the top I was greeted to light and then
later heavy showers. It was perfect for my walk. The island had a nice rainfall
and now, it’s positively steamy…
I am training to hike up Mt. Scenery in Saba. Any comment on
that hike?

It’s been raining all day..the sky is grey..the wind
is light..the air has a chill..ami ta hopi konentu..I am VERY happy..I am
working, cleaning and loving it..
The islands seems quiet but in town last night La Barca a
new Italian restaurant was packed. I had homemade tri color gnocci with fresh barracuda.
Here in Bonaire apparently there is no Ciguaterra as in the Eastern Caribbean.
I recall the night my ex ate King Fish and nearly DIED from Ciguaterra…man,
he was sick.
I saw a restaurant advertising Grouper a HUGE eco no no. Few
places sell it here being a eco minded dive destination. I emailed the owner to
ask if it was farm or wild caught. No reply yet. Please don’t eat Grouper
They eat Lionfish, BTW.

About 20 minutes ago the heat index was 120 and the actual
temp at the airport was 97 degrees. Suddenly a front came thru bringing high
winds and rain and much cooler temps. I opened the windows and let in the
cooling air.
It’s a lazy afternoon. The island is quiet..

We had a morning blast of tropical winds and rain..now it’s
a light blissful drizzle. The landscape is loving the rain. The sky suggests
this may be an all morning affair which I love. I wanted to sleep in but with 4
furkids that was no possible. At the grocery story a Dutch woman had on a long
sweater. Seriously it is 75 degrees but a sweater?? LOL..
The entire island is gearing up for the Futball game Sunday.
Dutch pride is strong. There will be parties all day and night no matter what the
outcome. I heard the drum corp. rehearsing.

It’s very quiet and chill in Bonaire. The wind is VERY
light perfect for diving and snorkeling. Everyone is gearing up for Football
tomorrow. I envy the Eastern Caribbean enjoying some much needed rain. I pray
we get some soon. The landscape is parched.

I headed to Lac Bay to capture an 8:30 session but ran into
my girl friend and chatted for an hour..by the time I got on the water, the
crowd was forming to watch the Holland Brazil match. I placed my bet and took a
4.5 sail out..gusty as heck..not too fun..onto a plane and back out..I baled
and came to watch what turned out to be a GREAT match. Bonaire is in a frenzy…

I woke at 3 AM to banging, slamming and rain…the dogs
were all huddled up near the door begging to come in. I ran around battening
down the hatches and securing the rain barrel in position..then the rains
stopped and now 4 hours later it’s blowing about 26 knots..Off to Lac Bay
for dawn patrol windsurfing and then 10 AM football..I hope Holland does not
get demolished..I would be happy if they got one goal past Brazil.

There are light puffy clouds obscuring the early morning
sun. The light wind is cooling..Windguru predicts some heavy duty rains this
week..I hope so…
Aruba Hi Winds commences this week so they should have some
nice races and freestyle contests.

I am in Cape Cod heading to Boston to attend parent and student
orientation for my daughter. I am going back to college, peeps!! LOL…the
weather here is humid and warm. Down in Bonaire my pet sitter reports my rain
barrels are full and there is not a whisper of wind. Things are might odd down
there..my windsurf clientel are not happy.
Heading to St.Martin and Anguilla this week so hope the
tropics behave..I am going for my annual beach and rum fix.

Please read my blurb and predictions on www.antiguabliss.com. Being from New
England and living in Bonaire I do miss weather. It’s pretty boring in
the ABC islands but at least I don’t worry so much about storm damage
being a home owner.
Be safe all…let’s hope for more rain and for
Haiti let’s pray they are spared anything significant. The BP disaster
plagues my mind more than I care to share..

I am enjoying a respite off island in Cape Cod. The weather here has been
glorious. In Bonaire I notice heat index readings over 105 each day. My pet
sitter reports it is HOT. I have not seen rain in a few weeks. Let's see what
the tropical season brings.

I went to Curacao for the day to meet a friend and have lunch. It was a
steamy 30 C. We drove all over and then ate at Golden Star for local food.
I had Dradu (Dorado) which was un tiki salu (salty) but good. Later I
picked mangoes off my friends tree..I miss mango season. There is one tree
I know of in Bonaire. I am inspired to plant my own. We need more rain. My
weather predictions are for a rainy summer.

I woke to a drizzle around 4 AM. I forgot to take my rain
barrel lid off so it made a racket. The air was reminiscent of Antigua at 6 AM
as I walked the dogs..moist with the smell of earth and foliage..I miss those
humid days on the other side of the sea….later the heat index heated up
to over 105 degrees. I took an hour off to snorkel at Windsock’s private
beach. It was pure please. A massive Mahi Mahi swam by me..lots of parrotfish
chomping away.

The winds are still and the sky has puffy clouds with bright
sunshine. It was a lovely AM walk today about 80 degrees with a cooling
breeze. The limbi limbi (little brown fleas that buzz like mosquitos and attack
every moist orifice they can find mostly your nose) are out in full force. The
doggies are hiding inside to escape their wrath. Limbi is the Papiamento word
but what are they anyway?? Ugh..
I have a great dive special on www.bonairebliss.com for anyone needing
a diver respite. Working on marketing strategies. The winter early spring
season so far for business was great. Things are slowing up a little.
Planning a trip to Anguilla June 25th. Love that island..
