- Update from Bermuda
  • By "Marion Dyer" <mdyer at myhome.bm>

Well I have had no power since early this morning. I am at my friends house. The wind is very wild outside and the sea looks amazing. We are schedueld to fly out today to go to family function in Altanta. At 11 a.m. they still had our flight scheudeld to leave even though the causeway was still closed. The causeway links the  majority of Bermuda to the  internatinoal airport. There are a also two parishes across the bridge with multitudes of people living there. Delta finally cancelled the flight into and out of Bermuda about 2 hours ago. Although disappointed I am relieved as I hate flying in this weather. I have attached the latest  update  http://www.gov.bm/portal/server..pt/gateway/gateway/)/gateway/PTARGS_0_2_13804_725_227862_43/http%3B/ptpublisher.gov.bm%3B7087/publishedcontent/publish/cabinet_office/emo/hurricane_updates_new/update__severe_weather_4.pdf
This storm is worse than any we ahd all hurricane season. And it freezing cold too!! Bring on Summer

HI All.. Happy New Year
Bermuda has had a very COLD winter. Everything that happens on the atlanic coast of USA as snow storms gets to us as COLD wind and RAIN. We have had many nights with temps in the 50's and we do not have central heating :(.This most current one is the worst one yet. I have attached a Bermuda weather service update. We have been advised to take precautions as the winds will reach hurricane force with seas outside the reef at 35ft.......Will try to take some pictures as I love to LOOK at storms but only if its safe to do so. This morning on my way to work the sea was calm and peaceful. Its noon now and the wind has picked up.
All flights into Bermuda have been cancelled today. Tomorrow doesn't look much better:(.

Wishing everyone well and continued prayers for Haiti.
Marion

Looks like 94 is creeping along and majority of the models show it (her) moving in a NW direction.  This is good new for a majority of the islands but not Bermuda.  We are in wait and see mode again but we are ready.

The more delicate foliage has turned brown due to the salt spray from Bill....another hit would make things look really drab.

On Mon im off to Chicago "The Windy City" for a few meetings (hows that for foreshadowing?).

Danny has formed.  He is far enough away from Bermuda that I dont think we will feel anything from him.... BUT!   I will now take this opportunity to address all readers from the New England area.  Including my friends and family on Long Island.  PREPARE PREPARE PREPARE!  If Danny doesnt get you trust me when i tell you that another storm eventually will!  and it will be a holy effing mess ok? Your trees are overgrown, old, heavy, rigid and dried up.  The six SUVs in your driveway will be riddled with dings and dents if not all together crushed by an ancient Quercus palustris.  Have a safe place to ride out any storm and a plan for afterwards.  You will be without power for a long time regardless of what LIPA or whoever your power supplier is telling you.

Make sure your chain saws are ready.... your bbq all shined up... gas in the cars... pet food...meds for everyone... water... batteries for a radio.. etc etc etc.

If not this year maybe next year...but im telling ya...  LI and New England area are due for an ass whoopin.

Namaste!~

- Invest 92L (TS Danny?)
  • From: Keith / bdaweather <bdaweather at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Tue, 25 Aug 2009 14:22:35 -0700 (PDT)
In my previous post I mentioned the possibility of something tropical computer predicted around north Bahamas sometime this week well it looks like it may come to fruition as we have 92L starting to take shape north of PR or about 630 miles south of Bermuda. This will by the looks of the flare up today will become at least Tropical Storm Danny. The initial reports had 92 on a more westerly track but now the new computer runs have it more to the east and on a path up the classic hurricane alley between Bermuda and the coast of Carolina. Until this storm actually forms I don't think any of these projections are anywhere near Gospel at this time.
So something to keep track of in the next few days to see exactly what the track is once the NHC declares it a cyclone or depression we will get their forecast track.

Out in the east Atl. there are a few waves that are being monitored along with some hefty storms coming off African coast. Computer models are picking up on some of these for potential development.

Sent out a local email yesterday warning everyone to keep their supplies handy as it looks like we are going to have a busy month of September most folk here should be fairly prepared now with our Bill encounter last weekend. If nothing is in progress around Sept 4th then we may have a week or so of quiet. I do believe tropical activity is connected to the phase of the moon as does other weather phenomenon. The tides here have been extra high for the past 2 months this extra high tide does occur here usually in late summer for a few weeks but this year it seems to be earlier and longer lasting this is what made hurricane Bill passing worse last week as the extra high tide meant low lying areas where affected more then usual.

- Life after Bill (Bermuda Today)
  • From: Keith / bdaweather <bdaweather at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Sat, 22 Aug 2009 16:43:33 -0700 (PDT)
Greetings once again from the Islands of Bermuda.  August 22nd 2009 2300hrs UTC

Well as previous posts have outlined today the island suffered very little damage with the passing of Hurricane Bill last evening. Apart from power outages and minor damage here and there venturing on the roadways today would not appear that there was a storm just 15 hours ago. I assume there was some beach erosion on south shore beaches but this sand will return quite quickly and in a few days it should look like nothing happened.

Well we have at least another 6 weeks up here at 32/64 as our season does not start in earnest until September . September and the first two weeks of October are the months that we can expect tropical activity but with all the climate changes in the world I guess even that assumption would be dodgy these days. Looking at one of the computer models it has another tropical system around north Bahamas later next week we will have to watch the situation as Bill was enough for now sure was to close for comfort another 100 miles or so east and we would be singing a different song today.

Thank you for your attention over the past few days and off course the messages. I have attached to this post another picture of one of our beaches on the north coast this time Shelly Bay Beach in Hamilton Parish. The picture I took today, had to lower the resolution for up and downloading but you will see the contrast in sea conditions while the south is wild with Hurricane ocean this beach is tranquil as it usually is during the summer with is balmy 86f / 30c water its a superb spot for children.

Best wishes everyone hope the rest of this 2009 Atlantic Hurricane season is quiet and peaceful for you and your homeland.

Regards
Keith

According to news reports, people are waiting on either end of the Causeway at the east end so that they can cross.  Patience, people!  Safety first - it will open, but what's the hurry?

The seas in St. George's Harbour are rough and impressive, although the winds have dropped.  I can't see much damage, but I expect that some of the quay will have been damaged as the surf was crashing powerfully toward the Square.  Some power out (3700 customers), but not as widespread as it could be.

All in all, it looks like we have come through fairly unscathed and the worst thing is listening to awful music on local radio in between news reports!

Well here i am ... alive and well.  We survived the night  :)  I was a bit jumpy due to the reports of tornadoes.  Our power dipped a few times but it always recovered YEAHHHHH!!!!!   Still very windy this AM and the surf is extremely rough and coming in fast on  the south shore.  The street below is strewn with leaves and small braches but i do not see any large trees down and the most structural damage i see is some shredding on our supply room door ( no biggie it wasnt in great shape to begin with).  I can not see the pool from our balcony but i imagine its loaded with leaves and small debris.

Will go out exploring with the family this morning and take pics and get more specific info on damage.

Thanks to everyone who emailed and expressed concern.

Good morning from Bermuda where three words can describe the weather Hot Humid and Windy. 06:30am Local.

Its been a windy night on the island although I have seen worse tropical system passing yes we did receive tropical storm gust overnight and a consequence have had numerous power outages. Our electric company has worked through the night but this morning there are still quite a number of areas without power  been told around 3800 customers I have not had any information on any injuries although I am sure there are minor structure damage again like I said in previous posts from falling tree branches on buildings and vehicles etc.
Thankfully I have not had to switch to any backups to communicate with outside world actually my land-line telephones never went down with my 110mph hurricane Fabian in 03.
Here in Bermuda our systems are quite hardy and we can handle these wind speeds without to many major complications. Have not had any confirmed tornado reports but would not be surprised if there were. The west end of island was closest to the storm so I again assume received stronger wind..
I think we will see that Bill was at closest point around 10 pm-12 midnight  we had a band of rain and constant thunder go through around 9pm with some widespread showers after, I did not have any rain to speak of since then. At that time the wind move further south and increased for my location. The Causeway spoke of earlier linking main island with east end was closed at 8:30pm and as far as I know remains closed this morning.
Here are my stats.
Highest gust overnight 52mph again I am somewhat sheltered from extreme south wind so I can say that other areas most likely had 60mph+
This morning
Wind 35mph South SSW
Temperature 82f
Humidity 90%
Barometer 29.80 this was the lowest overnight and has not started to rise yet.

Thats it at this point does not look like any major damage or injuries, our only Hospital is without regular power this morning but have emergency generators which are functioning normally supplying power to the building.. Most normal Saturday activities are curtaild today including any ferry service etc. The Intl Airport will reopen around lunchtime although the Causeway is still closed as of 7.15am

Have a nice day,  the coffee always tastes better on the weekend.

9:40pm  unsubstantiated reports of a Tornado near Berry Hill area.  Also reports that some are now without power and some boats/docks already damaged.

So far so good at my place.

Reports of some tornadoes already towards the west end.  At the east end, the seas are increasing - St. George's Harbour is spectacular - and the power is still up.  Lots of thunder and lightning in the last hour.
Kids are excited, especially my 4 y-o who is clutching his flashlight earnestly.

8:30pm Things just got ugly.  Its pitch black outside and the winds are wayyyy up.  rain is lashing against our doors and windows and water seeping through every crack it can find.  Lots of lightening and rumour of potential tornados popping up.

Im in my bed eating toll house crackers.... wondering how long power will hold out.  I bought some beef jerky and milano cookies on the way home... im gonna hit those next.

  • From: "Anne and Marcus" <mdkaek at ibl.bm>
  • Date: Fri, 21 Aug 2009 19:14:16 -0300
The weather has deteriorated gradually today and I noticed that people around BDA were spending much of the day getting ready for the storm - there was a real shift from yesterday when everyone was pretty relaxed.  As usual, the info in the media has been great, so we have had plenty of warning.

In the east end, St. George's Harbour is really choppy and mostly devoid of boats.  I'm watching the few boats still moored on the Town side get buffeted about.  The tide is currently rising - high tide due at about 10 pm, so it will be interesting to see how high the sea comes up.  Apparently there is a mesoscale eddy around, creating unusually high tides currently.  Good job the storm is down graded as the risk of flooding would be so much worse.

Let's see what the night brings!

We just went for a bit of a tour.  We went to Elbow Beach on the south shore and then we drove past Horseshoe.  Lots of rain and wind but nothing totally alarming.  I guess we can expect some strong gusts tonight that could reach hurricane force but so far everything seems under control.  The gas stations are busy and the grocery store was doing a brisk business in alcohol sales.

We already have water seeping in through the cracks in our main door and windows and we are using towels to soak it up.

Pics attached.

- Stormy Friday Night In Bermuda
  • From: Keith / bdaweather <bdaweather at yahoo.com>

6pm local 21:00UTC

If there are any visitors here on their honeymoon I expect this Friday night weather will be just the right ingredient to go with that bottle of wine......Enjoy the weather even though this Bill was not on the invitation list. Its the other bill that will come next month you will fear more...

The weather in the last 3 hours has gone down hill with higher wind gusts and almost steady heaver rain.

Barometer now falling more rapidly at 29.90

Wind now SE gusting to 32mph here most likely up to 40+ in higher elevations.

Overcast with now steady wind driven rain

Humidity 86%

Temperature 81f.

Just checked the storm annimation and looks like Bill may be moving now a litle more north, we appear to be now coming into the main part of the storm it appears that Bill may have lost his pronounced eye I don't know why he maybe just creating a new one I understand that the eye is almost constantly being replaced. Although he is now down to a C2.  I was hoping that he would go a little more west before turning north. If he is in fact moving more north then at least the New England area should be safe.

Warm Regards
Keith

- Bermuda Weather 18:50hrs UTC
  • From: Keith / bdaweather <bdaweather at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Fri, 21 Aug 2009 12:23:04 -0700 (PDT)
Hello everyone and welcome to Bermuda Weather update at 18:30hrs UTC. 3:30pm local.

Well at 3:30 there has not been a dramatic decline in the weather wind has increased and we have had rain showers with drizzle since about 10am. No major wind nothing like what I have experienced in the past but looks like the usual tropical or hurricane that pass us at least once a season. The one thing different that I have noticed is the actual storm surge around noonday at one low lying location on the south coast in Smiths parish the ocean swells were coming over the road. The road is strewn with debris from the sea. This road is in the same area that Fabian demolished in 03 but the roadway is fine for traffic at this time.

Here are the stats that I have recorded at 18:30UTC

Wind 28 mph from SE as I am inland a bit I would expect this to be 38-40 on the coast or open high elevations.
Humidity up to 86%
Temperature down now 81f
Barometer falling slowly now at 29.95. No dramatic drop here yet.
Rainfall since this morning 10am .25inch this is not accurite because of the wind driven rain.
Overcast sky conditions

I have been out for most of the day just returned and in for the rest of it I hope. No major panic on the roads but there is extra traffic as I understand most stores and offices are closing at 3pm or no later then 4.
From what I can gather the airport has been running normally with some flights leaving earlier then usual. The late AA flight from JFK this evening has been cancelled and so is the flight from Miami that arrives here at 8.30pm scrubbed for today. With these two flights cancelled tomorrow morning flights to Miami and JFK will also be cancelled I also understand the Int airport will close later this evening and will not reopen until midday Saturday after all runways etc are examined if we do get serious weather. Another casualty is the BA flight that usually arrives arounf 6pm this plane left the UK per normal but the captain has now turned back to the UK fearing not being able to land this would mean that he would have to take the plane to the US east coast if unable to land here.

I have some photos to share with you form today which I will post later on this evening.

Once again as of this time there does not seem to be any drastic weather change during the day nothing that I was not expecting so hopefully it will stay this way I have been through a few close passing hurricanes and seen a lot worse then this, so we will see what the next 12 hours bring.

Thanks for your attention best wishes to all.

Keith

PS Thanks Jim (TWC) I received your message thanks for the vote of confidence I will personnally reply to you and supply you with alternate email address if I can be of help to you in this situation or the future, just send a note and will do my best assist if needed. I think you will like one of the pictures I am posting later there is one thing that does not stop even in a hurricane or threat of one, stand by for the photo later, Cheers.

At present we are experiencing the first rain squall from Bill

Wind 20mph SE with higher gusts at higher elevation and exposed south locations.

Barometer presently steady 30.00

Humidity 82%

Termperature 82.4f

Overcast conditions, I don't think we will see the sun for the rest f the day.

The surf and wave conditions on the South Coast are familiar tropical system conditions there is heavy incoming surf at this time I will be attempting to check it out shortly and update in the PM.

For those with access to the American cable channel (The Weather Channel) they have reporters here covering the passing of Bill and are broadcasting almost every hour on conditions here.

Update this first squall was not much to speak of rainwise and the wind has diminished a bit its now just overcast conditions..

Take care have a nice day

Good day everyone on the Caribbean Hurricane Network and and around the world on the world wide net.

Bermuda weather this morning  at 7am local
Temperature 81f
Humidy 81%
Barometer 30.00 falling slowly
Wind SE less then 12mph
All recorded on my weather station 1/2 mile inland of south coast in the middle of the island.

The only signs of a tropical system in the area is off course the South Shore coast line has the familiar roar of the ocean which we witness at least one or two times during the Atlantic hurricane season. This morning it looks like what we call a BERMUDAFUL MORNING just a little extra warm. As I said in a previous posting we are just a 22 sq mile dot in the middle of the Atlantic and forecasting just everyday weather I assume is a challenge long-term is even more. With all of the computer models now all tight on track the forecast looks very accurite. Bill is now due south. If all goes according to the experts Bill should go up Hurricane Alley like most of the other do although I think its a little to close for complacency so I hope everyone is paying attention here for the next 24 hours.

We have had some special guests vacationing here the past few days the other infamous Bill was here, Bill Clinton and his wife Hilary I don't know how long they had planned to be  here  but I guess they wanted to get here for some R&R before the other Bill got here. I understand today the celebrities left the island last night because of the pending storm conditions. Sorry Mr and Mrs Clinton about this other uninvited Bill in the neighborhood.

We have many old time traditions for determining weather conditions especially during hurricane season some include the clarity of shark oil the height of silk spider webs even the way the water would go over the South shore reefs prior to the possible hurricane arrival. Now I don't know how precise any of these old weather predictors are but we often have them in mind this time of year. I will point out here that none of these are presently indicating any really serious weather. We are expected to have storm and possible TS winds out of this but here in Bermuda we encounter storm force and even TS winds quite often in the months of January to April as we can experience some fierce winter gales. I keep records of wind etc and have listed the wind gust in these storms for this 2009 winter
January 2009 46 mph
February       67 mph
March          52 mph
April             32 mph
The winter storms bring the north wind and the hurricanes bring the south wind and will do quite a bit of beach erosion so I would expect some beach erosion with the passing of Bill.
I have attached a panoramic image of our famous Horseshoe Bay beach on the South Shore this is just when we started to see the tides and currents begin at noonday 20/08. Shortly after this the no swimming signs that are erected every summer during these conditions were posted. However I did see folks in the water in other locations later in the day. I expect the sea conditions to be quite fierce today and I must admit just to sit and watch this power is quite fascinating even having seen it off and on every season. Us folks here at 32/64 have at least another 6 weeks of hurricane season to anticipate as the latter months usually bring the storms further north.

So today its business as usual I am going to delay posting this to just get any early updates but I do not expect any closures although I am sure many workers would like another holiday for any reason. The Causeway mentioned in a previous posting is an open stretch of sea level roadway that connects the main island with the eastern end which also feeds our only airport. This stretch of roadway was partially destroyed in 2003 during our infamous direct hit of C3 Fabian this is also the location where 4 people lost there lives attempting to cross this Causeway during winds of 100mph. Since then the Government have instituted a set of wind guide lines for road closing sometimes in the past they have been reprimanded for closing the road trapping people on either side without proper notice and unnecessarily. But I guess better to error on safety's side.

So we will update  when necessary I am sure the other correspondents here will provide some dramatic images of the mighty ocean on our South Shore as the next 24 hours unfolds.

Have a nice day everyone.

Special greetings to the Tortola Mermaid I understand that you have been unwell lately, my goodness hang in there I do believe that you have many folks who read your postings as a daily ritual. Again wishing you get well greetings.

We went to Horseshoe Bay Beach this evening.  Lots of people there checking out the ocean.  The sun was shining and there were a handful of surfers enjoying the waves.  PICS ATTACHED.  I saw a few people boarding up on our drive to the beach.  We will wait until tomorrow mornings forecast to make that decision. Currently the stars are shining, the wind is light but the ocean is beginning to roar loudly.

Government has announced that they will close the causeway when winds reach a sustained 50knots.  Tragically 4 lives were lost on that causeway during Fabian.

The baby is sound asleep, husband went to get us dinner (mexican take out ... 2 burritos and an order of iguana eggs = $47.53  wth???).  More in the AM.  :)

Well.... Its 4:20 the sun is shining, a few puffy clouds around, not windy at all.  Out my office window I can see the workmen still working on the roof of the newly erected building across the street.  They have one of those HUGE cranes set up so they could lift materials.  I guess they just turn it into the direction of the wind and hope for the best?

No one seems concerned at all.  No one has plans to board up their homes and most people dont even think we will lose power.  A lot of sholder shrugging and Ho Humming going on over here.

I guess offices will close early tomorrow if the government closes the causeway out to st georges and the airport.

I will take pics tonight and post.  ....hopefully I wont find my husband nibbling his fingernails off when i get home.

Thanks to everyone who emailed me and told me im not overreacting!
No wind yet but some rain now coming through.  it might just be an unrelated shower though.
On my way to work I passed many beaches and did not see any warning signs posted yet...maybe by tonight they will be up?  Off to get lunch... more later.

Well we are back home safe and sound.  The flight was smooth with the exception of my 2 year old acting like a savage.  I must say I am VERY CONFUSED.  Many of the people i have come into contact with dont seem to think we are going to get more than a *bit of wind..much like a winters day*  So im wondering if Im over reacting and just love the drama or if this is indeed going to be a big deal.  maybe its still to early to say.  Should we just move the potted pants inside or do we board up?  The models show the storm to our west.   but its BIG and Strong so it doesnt need to be sitting on our heads to be a serious issue....right?   My cab driver said and i quote "ehhh I dont think we will get much.  I think Ana and CLaudette knocked the wind out of Bills sails"  she also refered to Bill as a tropical depression.... i didnt even have the energy to correct her.  I just nodded and thought to my self HELLO!  BILL IS A CAT 4 H U R R I C A N E!!!!!!    I find people like to down play the threat until the last minute ...and they like to chide ayone who gets all fired up and anxious too soon.

I have lived in Bda for 7 years and I have NEVER seen a water spout.  But today one was spotted over the city of Hamilton (PIC ATTACHED)  this is MEGA ODD and alarming. But right noe the sky is clear, the frogs are singing and all seems well with the world.

More in the AM.

Well..im throwing the last few things into my suitcases and heading to JFK for flight back to Bda.  NHC just updated and it looks like Bill will stay to our west but its still big and strong so i expect some nasty weather anyway.  A slight nudge to the east and things could get REAL interesting.  Will post more tonight when I arrive home.........

Wish me luck!

- Bermuda Hurricane Bill Report
  • From: Keith / bdaweather <bdaweather at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Tue, 18 Aug 2009 13:31:41 -0700 (PDT)
Hello everyone, I have not written to the network since July 2008 when Tropical Storm Bertha was passing to our east. Thankfully we have not had any of the storms after Bertha affect us. Actually Bertha went in the record books as the earliest storm to form so far north to come this far west in July.

I have been following the postings of the other CHN Bermuda writers here on the network.

We are now poised to have maybe a close encounter with which will soon be major Hurricane Bill. Its unusual for us to have a storm come this close in August these in past years have always been in September or early October but I guess like other weather patterns things are changing. Our last hurricane well the worst in 50 years was the almost direct hit of C3 Hurricane Fabian in Sept. 5th 2003 at that time claiming 4 lives from drowning.

Today we have had numerous rain squalls with a thunder storm early this morning producing a horizon to horizon rainbow none of this from Bill but a trough passing over. The rainbow in the morning would have the older Bermudians saying rainbow in the morning sailors take warning. Surely a sign of pending bad weather.

Here at present there does not seem to be a panic as most Bermudians have a tendency to wait for the last minute to actually purchase supplies. Because of our 20 sq mile size a lot of these storms veer off before coming to close.

Bill as of 15:00UTC 12noon Bda ADST was still 1419miles  to our SE he looked like he may have been moving more west then north since early this morning all models are now taking Bill to the west of Bermuda and not as close as previous tracks with the UK model the furthest west. The present NHC official track has Bill 152 miles west or 67.41 / 32.42 sometime on Saturday. As Bill is intensifying rapidly and now has a 35 mile wide eye these coordinates will change and the next 24/36 hours will give a more accurate distance. I do think Bill will pass to our west and we will get tropical storm winds which will have very little affect most noticeable will be the swell on the South coast beaches with falling trees and their damage.  Now I just hope I am correct.
As I said before most of these storms eventually track what is known as Hurricane Alley this is almost midway between Bermuda and the east coast. Presently we have no official warnings posted other then Bill being a potential threat whenever a storm is a possibility of being less then 200 miles I maybe wrong on the number.

So hopefully we will be fine and have good news in the next 36 hours. Structures here in Bermuda are soundly constructed built with stringent planning regulations for hurricanes so if we get C1 winds we should be OK. Most of the damage in the past has been from falling trees and the occasional tornado that accompanies hurricanes. If we do have a close call I will try and update if possible with DSL, Dial up or wireless Internet 2 land lines, generator Maximum weather instruments. I don't think I have to worry about server failure C&W here have recently updated their data center here I think it could withstand a C5 storm no problem.

Best wishes to all....

I just received an e-mail from the US consulate in Bermuda.  It was basically a warning about Bill and all the things I should do including:
*seek a safe sheltered area in case of flooding or evacuation (or i guess if my house is rendered unstable)
*keep Passport, Birth Certificate and any other documents on my person or in a waterproof safe
*stay tuned for more updates

it provided some good links to all sorts of preparedness info.  Most locals track storms on www.sharkoil.bm

Current map shows Bill passing to our west by just over 100 miles.  Swell expected by Thursday.  NHC updates in 1 hour.

NHC just updated at 11am.  It looks like Bills track has inched ever so slightly closer to Bda.  I have started packing as we fly back to the island tomorrow afternoon.  I just spoke to a friend back home and she was just at Gorhams (our version of home depot) and she said it was a zoo, packed with people who were buying tarps, batteries, bottled water and flashlights.  I will take pics and video clips of all the happenings upon my return.  Feel free to add me to your facebook.

Im dreading the thought of losing power ...

husband upstairs in bed with sheets over his head (and im NOT kidding) he said hes going to wait until the 5pm update to make decisions.  ........ sigh...........

My husband went to the movies with my dad.  I put the baby down for a nap and went to Lowes with my sister.  I got more batteries, 2 tarps another flashlight and more duct tape of course.  Then went to the mall and spent way to much money on non essentials.  returned home and found my husband curled up on the couch in fetal position saying something that sounded like "direct hit"  when i asked him to repeat himself he said he might stay in NY with the baby until the storm is gone.  I have got to get back to work so me and my new tarps are going back to Bda no matter what is going to happen.

NHC updates in 30 min...  will post more later.

Just woke up and checked the progess/development of Bill.   Still doesnt look good for Bermuda.  Some models show him a cat 3 just passing to our west and some show it passing to our east.... this causes me to averge the two and that brings BILL ...well..  lets see....  RIGHT OVER MY HOUSE!   Im thinking of going to Lowes today to stock up on supplies which may be in short supply or hard to find upon my return.  Maybe some plastic sheeting and more batteries, rope, buckets, duct tape...who the hell knows...but i feel like i should buy SOMETHING?   I got a coleman battery operated lamp a few years ago as a gift and it has been a lifesaver on many occasions (usually those that involve my husband crawling into the attic to curse the AC unit).  SPeaking of my husband, he is not handling this well.  The last storm of any note to hit us was Fabian and he took part of our new roof away...  we had to deal with cracks and leaks for months (years?)afer that.  Roofs in Bermuda are finnicky things...and the people that tend to them are even more finnicky.   Anyway, my husband was traumatized by Fabian.  He also was on an airplane during 9-11 going from London to NY so he also now has a fear of flying.  This week he will have to get on a plane and go home to a hurricane.    Things are not lookin good  hes already panicky and irritable and something tells me its only gonna get worse.  maybe ill send him to the movies with my dad today to get his mind on brainless things.  *whimper*  more later.....

Well....Im still in NY visiting my parents and I have been without internet for almost 3 days as we took a quick road trip to Amish country in Pennsylvania.  Upon my return I checked the weather and it appears as if things have sprung to life while i was away.  Obviously I am most concerned about "BILL"  it looks like it is forcast to become a hurricane of some substance and head north towards Bermuda.  I will be back on island on  the 19th so plenty of time to prepare the homestead if Bill decides to pay us a visit.  I will post more frequently if it does look like it will come close and i will keep you all posted on as much as I can with respects to preparations/damages.

Im in NY visiting my parents until the 19th.  Dear Miss Mermaids book has just arrived at the door and Im eager to start it.  Sitting on the couch with mom and minute by minute the temperature is rising.  It's supposed to be in the 90s today.
CNN keeps replaying footage of that hotel that fell into the river in China during that typhoon they just had.  That is some scary crap.  At a family gathering yesterday I preached to everyone that would listen that Long Island is wayyyyy over due for a hurricane force storm (the last one we really had was Gloria in 85) and they should be very ready... i waxed on about the looming, aged overgrown oak trees and the power companys complacency... most people agreed with me but I could tell none of them were going to rush home and prepare a kit.   ah well....i tried.

Im keeping an eye on the blob that is moving its way west.  Models show it veering North.....could be bad news for Bermuda...but way to early to tell.

Waiter!!!!   more iced tea please ......

Let's see.....  where did I last leave off... Ah yes... Blue Bunny Ice Cream and the swimming pool.  Well not much has changed since then.  One or two passing showers and a few flicks of off shore lightening.

We have had a HUGE amount of seaweed washing up on the shores.  It is in such abundance that the tractors that comb the beaches cant seem to keep up.  Or as soon as they have finished more just washes up.  I can see huge areas of it out at sea.  The pros say its a healthy and good thing and meerly a result of currents steering it to us..but conspiracy theorists say it is the forshadowing of storm friendly conditions.   Things are so quiet we are being lulled into that dangerous comfy zone known as complacency.

We are off to the States for a bit.  Hope nothing develops while we are away.

I should explain that I am NOT a weather expert...i do not forcast things and my observations involve me looking out the window and saying "yup its raining" or "gee it sure is hot today".  Occasionally I will wander down to the beach to see how rough things are.

Apparently a front/area of deep convection (to me that means windy rain?) is approaching and cruise ships may be diverted and flights canceled.  We had one rainy squall this AM and now its sunny again...  local weather service doesnt seem alarmed... so I am off to eat my tikka masala.   Will post again later if this "deep convection" arrives and provides some excitement.

Well after days of rain.. we are not complaining.. we have had 12.58" to date our usual average for June is a little over 5" we have finally caught up and surpassed the annual average by an inch or so. This is all good news as we drink what the heavens send us or have to buy water at $70 US a load to put in our tanks. The weather man says the sunshine is short lived as  we are to expect more rain on and off over next few days.
I have to wash my used to be white puppy who has been dancing in mud puddles all week. Enjoy the weekend

its 5:28pm...   its raining so hard I can barely see out across the street.  There is no way I am getting on my moped in rush hour with this torrential rain.  It has been pouring for 2 or 3 full days now....considering sleeping under my desk... i conned co worker into going to pick us up dinner... if rain continues tomorrow I will begin rounding up animals in pairs.

Yesterday it poured...and poured ...and poured....  dont get me wrong im not complaining.  We needed the rain!!! The rain did let up around noon for the latest protest against the Premier and the turn out was pretty good.   I will post some pics of the protest below.  Today its mostly clear with a light breeze but we are expecting more showers tomorrow and early next week.

I finally got around to purchasing a battery operated radio for the storm season..$13.95 and itworks like a charm...it also allowed us to listen to the debates in parliament last night which had me unsure if i wanted to laugh or cry.  When the politicians finished rambling at 5am they voted and defeated the motion of no confidence...so the Premier will stay in power...  all that seems to have been achieved was more racial rhetoric and division.....

this week ill have my husband do a check on the boards we use if we need to board up and ill also determine who has the best price on batteries and stock up on those.  ill also find his drill...it never seems to be charged when we need it....i bet its burried in the hall closet somewhere...

Warm and humid today.  Mostly cloudy with a few sprinkles. At one point the clouds were so dark I thought we might get a thunder storm but it fizzled out.  I expect that will be the theme for most of this holiday weekend.  We need as much rain as we can get at this point as our tanks are running low.

Below are some pics i took from the Queens B day celebration in Hamilton today.  The regiment was out in full force and looking pretty sharp.  The premiere and the Governor were also present....   interesting as we are having some politcal issues at the moment.  Bermuda accepted 4 gitmo detainees who were found not guilty of terrorism.  The 4 men are being allowed to settle here as residents.  A whole big hulla bu loo followed...people upset they allowed them in, people upset the premiere didnt go through the proper channels, people upset they have been here for years working hard and contributing and they still are foced to leave due to immigration restrictions etc etc etc.....  opposition party table a no confidence motion on Friday and i suspect next week will be full of more drama and politcal antics.

On another note...on my list of things to do ths week is buy a radio for the storm season and check my battery stash.
