Greetings All,

Weather lately hasn't been that great, for a tourist that is.
Lots of clouds, showers on and off, sun peeks out now & then.
Today looks like it might be a better day then previous days.

After almost 2 months of very dry weather this is a nice change. Grass back to green & cisterns filling up or full.

Cheers,

Harry

- Good Rain for May Day
  • From: Harry Hallstrom <hwh888 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Sun, 3 May 2009 10:22:13 -0400
Hello All,

Guess this is worth reporting seeing we've been in a drought for several weeks.
On Friday 01-May we were lucky to get 1.75" of much needed water. It seems to have been island wide but perhaps not as much as here in the mountain village of Barnes Ghaut.
It lasted all but one hour+ but in that short time the weather station recorded a rain rate of 1.55 per hour. Gutters couldn't hold it in.

Thanks,

Harry

Had a shower this am & the satellite images show some low level clouds about.

  • From: Harry Hallstrom <hwh888 at gmail.com>

Happy Easter All

Nice but dry !! Less than 1.0" of rain fell in March & it looks like April is following the same pattern. Soil is parched & landscape is brown.
On the plus side, every day is a beauty with nice breezes blowing, evenings still pleasant. Sea temps hovering around 78-80 degrees F.
Had a brief shower last evening but one would never know it this am.

Cheers,

Harry

- Bright and Breezy!

Good day to everyone,

Thursday and Friday (March 26-27) the Department of Agriculture on Nevis has been proudly hosting its 15th annual Open Day at The Villa in Charlestown. I have attached some pictures. Only 2 EC$ to get in and local produce available for purchase at reasonable prices. There is also a chance to add to the garden plant collection!

The NE wind has picked up again and there was some cloud early on yesterday with a shower or two first thing. The temperature dropped last night so it felt pretty cold up here in "the highlands". Today has brightened up with a few white puffy clouds in a clear blue sky.

As well as the pics of the open day I've added a view as well. So enjoy - Nevis Nice!

- Sunny and Dry with some Monkey Business
  • From: Frank Goodwill <nevisislander at yahoo.co.uk>
  • Date: Wed, 25 Mar 2009 03:31:30 +0000 (GMT)
Nevis is hot and dry with sun and scattered cloud. When visiting Charlestown today it was hot and humid and there were a noticable number of tourists wandering around. Back in the 'highlands' it was cooler with that nice NE breeze. We did have a very light shower yesterday evening (5pm) but that didn't last long and dried off as soon as it hit the ground.

It was hotter this morning and the Vervet Monkeys stopped off in the yard and 'limed' under an old mango tree. I managed to get some pictures and have attached them.

- Blue Sky and Sea.... Nevis Nice
  • From: Frank Goodwill <nevisislander at yahoo.co.uk>
  • Date: Thu, 19 Mar 2009 02:47:25 +0000 (GMT)
Well, things are lookig up as far as the weather is concerned. Blue sky, blue sea and no cloud cap around Nevis Peak. The NE wind is now a pleasant and refreshing breeze. Leaves have been dropping from the cedar trees and the grass is starting to go brown so it looks like the dry season is with us.

No sight of the Vervet Monkey troop in the yard (some 20 strong) over the past two weeks as there is no fruit around. No pictures of the hooligans at the moment!

I've added some pictures from today - a view of the Caribbean - Saddle Hill (south of the island) - Nevis Peak without its cloud cap.

- Nevis - some sun and a shower.
  • From: Frank Goodwill <nevisislander at yahoo.co.uk>
  • Date: Sat, 14 Mar 2009 03:47:21 +0000 (GMT)
Good day from Nevis. Friday 13th has been mainly overcast with some dark clouds appearing throughout the day. The wind has been pretty brisk and cool coming in from the North East from the Atlantic and around Nevis Peak. We had a short sharp shower at about 14:45 hours with some stronger gusts of wind.

Soursop season seems to have ended with only small hard fruit left. This has curtailed the Vervet Monkey activity in the yard.

I have included a picture of Saddle Hill, Nevis as viewed through shower that came over this afternoon. Despite the weather Nevis Nice!

Greetings All,

Haven't been posting lately. Not a lot of interesting weather of late.
Early this week winds were out of the SW & it felt like June-July weather but come Wednesday evening that big front off USA East Coast has effected our weather. winds changed to NE and a noticeable drop in temperatures. It was a cool rainy day yesterday & today looks to be the same.

Cheers,

Greetings,

Haven't been posting much of late. Not a lot happening in way of weather. Just comfortable temperatures.
I was fortunate to have received weather station data from a house not far from mine. The data starts back in 1977.
I've added my data from 2002 to present.

Having some problems down loading present conditions from weather station so can't post that info.

Thanks,

Greetings,

Seems the winds shifted out of the SW & we have a fine dusting of ash from Montserrat.
Enough to require the vehicle be washed down. Can feel it on the house floors & veranda. Time for a power wash !!

Nice winds blowing yesterday & a great fast ride in the sail boat as a result.

Attached year totals weather data for Nevis. Working on a rain fall report of all months from year 1977 to 2008.
I will post that when done. It's showing some very interesting data ....  I can say there is 'no' wet month or 'dry' month.

Greetings to all.

It seems the Christmas Breezes arrived almost to the hour. Wind has been blowing steadily since Christmas Eve Day and isn't supposed to calm down till around the 29th. Wind chills are in the 60's. Yesterday was a total washout but today looks to be much better with blue skies & little or no rain. Global warming doesn't seem to be here 'yet'.

Greetings,

Those pesky clouds seem to continue hanging around the Northern Caribbean Islands. Satellite images don't really tell the true story.
Seems every day is filled with lots of clouds then some sun then more clouds & showers.
Last night was a big rain producer with 1.63 inches recorded on weather station rain gauge. Out the window view says today will be a repeat of the last few days.

Nevis Nice (but cool)
Day   time temperatures in the 78-80 deg range.
Night time temperatures in the 72-73 deg range.
All in all not bad. After a hot summer it feels good! Might be to cool for us that are year round residents but visitors will think it's perfect. Especially if they arrived from 20-30 deg weather.

Looks like things are getting back to normal. The Main road is passable around island. Reports that Charlestown was closed due to storm surge.
Heard Four Seasons has a lot of storm surge damage & will take months to repair. Sea Bridge & Sea Hustler broke from their moorings & washed ashore.
Record almost 2.5" of rain. Storm hit Nevis about 2am with heavy winds till about 4am.

Will post more as Omar gets closer.

Greetings to All,

Well the satellite images show the Leeward Islands to be clear but out the window I see clouds with a few passing showers.
Lately we've been getting showers every day. It helps to cool things down a bit after their passing but if the sun peeks out soon after the heat index climbs immediately. It's been rather humid with that dripping sweat feeling. Luckily no imminent storms about so will take the humidity & showers anytime.

Greetings,

Had a good downpour last evening which resulted in 1" of rain. That converts to 1000 gallons into the cistern.Everything topped up, all is green, ground this am will be easy to dig. Guess I'll be doing some gardening while things are easy to work.

- Thunder & Rain

Greetings,

We are in the midst of a thunder storm & heavy rain. So far .35" of rain has fallen.
It sounds as if the storm is moving from West to East, judging by the movement of the thunder.
I haven't looked at the satellite images to confirm this. Whatever direction, no complaints from me. Glad to have the rain for gardens & cisterns.

Greetings,

Sorry about the long period of silence....was in USA.

Returned to rather cloudy but dry weather. Seemed like rain would fall but nothing.

Weather station data didn't gather each days rain fall, only last data capture to my return. Somewhere in the month there was a total rain fall of 2.25". I've been told most happened in middle of June. I can see gravel trails where the heavy run off created the trail. One indication of a lot of rain at once.

This am it looks to be some blue sky about although looking at the satellite images it doesn't look to last.
Attached the present conditions.

- Nevis Nice (but dry)

Good Morning All,

It's been a dry month to date. That green look has turned to a dusty, burnt dry look. I see the water trucks daily delivering water to those empty cisterns. Hey folks ya gotta learn to go into conservation mode at times like this. Nature does it automatically. Plants stop growing, weeds die off (a good thing). Guess we'll all look to the East for those waves to head our way & produce some needed rain. Probably shouldn't say that to loud, might get more then I bargain for.

I figured out how to get the graphs out of my weather station data so attached the rainfall graph for this month.

Greetings,

Well, well. Finally a break from that thick haze we've been stuck in for the last couple of weeks.
Thinks cleared this am and low and behold no one moved St, Kitts. Was getting worried with no SKB in sight for the last few days!!!

- Nevis Nice (Warm)

Hello All,

Up early and enjoying the cool morning & the quietness of early am (even before the roosters).

Not much for breezes. Temps have been warm especially after those months of cool "winter" breezes.
Seems we went from cool to hot over night. Not a lot of rain this month to date. I see goat farmers harvesting grasses for them & loading into their car, truck, horse.

Living on the West side of the island and up near Nevis Peak we get blesses with more showers then most folks. As is typical on most of the Caribbean Islands. Dry on the East end and "not as dry" on the West end.

Attached latest conditions.

Greetings,

Looks like a bit of a reprieve from the very warm days of late and the cloudy days we've been having.
We're in between two cloud bands but little rain has fallen from them. Not drought conditions but edging closer!

- Warm Nevis
  • From: "Harry Hallstrom" <hwh888 at gmail.com>

Greetings,

Since last posting things have changed a bit. Winds shifted to a southerly direction which raised temperatures 5-6 degrees & you can feel the difference. With the shift it has become very calm with little rain to add to the "warm" feeling. Satellite images show we should be in for some rain today & tomorrow. Visual forecast says cloudy but doesn't look threatening rain.

Cheers,

Harry
