Today is my child’s 17^th b day. Happy B Day Maggie Rose. The winds are still honking here in Bonaire. I sailed my 4.2 meter sail fully powered up.  We could use some rain.

 

Some tourist friends and fellow island residents and I did the Donkey Safari today. WHAT A RIOT. I loved our safari feeding the donkey and seeing the good work done by the folks at the Donkey Sanctuary.

The winds remain stellar..but it’s still very hot about 29 C. I took Mothers Day off and hung out with friends in Sabedeco. The offshore winds were refreshing knocking over classes and making out taco luncheon a challenge. I wanted to sail but the homemade Margarita and taco luncheon drew me in..

The winds are incredibly gusty and Lac Bay is so shallow. Not my favorite set ups for windsurfing. Today Taty Frans raced from Bonaire to Curacao on a windsurf in 2 hours I am told. Well done Taty.

Caesar Finies, one of Bonaire’s top light wind freestylers celebrates his b day today. He works at Jibe City. We had cake at 11 with coffee and at 6 we will have a special happy hour to celebrate his b day, mine from Wed. and my friend and client, John Mark Walter who is here from LI. John Mark was just here 3 weeks in Feb. and came back for more. He and I have been fishing and chillin. The final ABK Windsurf Camp for the Winter/Spring Season in Bonaire is next week. Alas, it’s a private camp so your next chance to attend a Bonaire camp is in Dec.

 

Winds are gusty. The sky is cloudy and grey a lot. I cleaned my patio and the doggies marked it up promptly.

Wish I were in Montserrat today..well, the old Montserrat when Plymouth had cheery bars and quaint places to drink a Guinness. Fondly recall the shamrock stamps in my passport…Alas, here I am living in the Dutch Caribbean heading to Lee’s Sports Bar, a Dutch owned bar drinking my Guinness there..awell..so be it..life is good.

 

The weather is odd..not a lot of sun. I am down right chilly at night which I love. Winds are so so. Only 4 kiters out at 5 PM. The ABK Windsurf Camp is full to the brim. One more to go before the Bonaire season ends.

 

Tomorrow’s my b day…another year under my belt of life..gotta ring Mom who I owe my life..and a prayer to dear ole John Patrick may he RIP..miss ya Da…

Love reading the updates. Tommy’s excursion in Dominica sounds fun. Our island is too small to really escape anywhere but on occasion I head to Curacao or Aruba for a change. We lost AA come April 30 so my chances of getting over to Antigua easy are gone. Now I will need to take DAE from Bonaire to Curacao and then to Sint Maarten. Then, I will have to take LIAT. Both are not too reliable I cannot say I am thrilled about the loss of AA.

 

Well it was a funny season..lots of last minute bookings. Folks were getting some phenomenal air deals from the US to Bonaire. I had about 20 last minutes which help immensely. I am looking for a seasonal summer job here to help pay the water and electric bill. My teen is off to NYC and Amsterdam for the summer so my first summer alone. I am feeling a little empty nest already. Don’t let me go adopt anymore animals please…..haa…

I am trying to plan a summer jaunt. We did Anguilla last year and loved it. I have my mind set on Dominica or Grenada if money and time allows. Anyone fancy a house/pet swap??

 

The winds are lovely but light. The sky has puffy clouds and the sun feels glorious. At night I wear long sleeves and am comfy. I used the septic water for the first time to water the yard. It has been so rainy I have not had to rely on hand watering.

 

Clients say visibility for snorkeling is low.

 

I had some friends from Cape Cod down last week and another friend from Long Island is down tomorrow. I have 2 more weeks of ABK clinics left.

Well no worries about waves and swell. The winds are NE so the South of our island is fine. The cross for Taty Frans from Bonaire to Curacao is not going to be fun. He bears down 240 degrees downwind from BOPEC to the East Point of Curacao. Due to the seas I doubt I will ride in the chase boat.

I sailed my 4.2 meter sail and borrowed one of Jibe City’s 86 Tabou boards..wow, I LOVE IT. The wind was about 28/35 at some points. A 3.3 would have sufficed. I had to get out. Now, I am tired. Siesta..

We had a rainy evening. I had dinner with friends at one of my favorite places, Yacht Club Restaurant. Towards the end, the skies opened up. It was lovely and refreshing. It’s been a bad week for kiters and windsurfers. The Starboard photo shoot relied mostly on light wind freestyle this week to take shots for their 2010 catalogue.Sunday Taty Frans and Patun Saragoza windsurf from Bonaire to Curacao. Wind looks stellar.

I am not new to living in the Caribbean but have something new..there are little white/yellowish worms in my house and later of course small moths. What are they? I am trying to figure out where they are coming from. Lots of toads and frogs too in the yard…odd for Bonaire.

The winds lightened considerably. What a difference a week makes. This week’s sailors and even into next week will see light winds. Starboard is doing a photo shoot next week with some of the world’s top pros. Sara Quita and Quincy Offringa arrive from Aruba, Brian Talma from Barbados, Nicolas Akgazciyan from France and Team Bonaire including Taty Frans, Kiri Thode and Bjorn and Jurgen Saragoza.

 

March 8 is a monumental day when Constantin “Patun” Sargoza and Elton “Taty” Frans windsurf from Bonaire to Curacao. The event is a fundraiser for Bonaire’s own Erwin Muller. Erwin, a dive master and former windsurf hero on Bonaire suffered a serious stroke in January. He is recuperating in Curacao and has a long rehabilitation ahead. Erwin is well known in the community for being a man who loves adventure whether it’s riding his quad or delivering a yacht across the Caribbean.  Locals and tourists are rallying to support Erwin and his family, Ellen and Jason. The March 8 race is dedicated to Erwin, one of the original founders of windsurfing on Bonaire. Saragoza, a former Olympian will race across to Curacao with Pro Windsurfer Taty Frans. Taty, one of the top freestyler’s in the world recently circumnavigated the island in 2008. He is perhaps the fastest slalom sailor presently on Bonaire.  The race commences at 9 AM outside BOPEC. Spectators are welcome for the send off. Helicopters and chase boats will accompany the two sailors across the passage. The record set back in the 80’s by Erwin is 4 hours. They will race to Light House Point on the East side of Curacao and then head down to the pier near Breezes Resort.  Donations for this fundraiser may be contributed via Paypal to: Erwin2CanDive at gmail.com or by depositing into MCB # 400 050 800 c/o Linda Baker.  You may also speak to Elvis Martinus about other contributions for the fundraiser at 786 2288.

I haven’t had to water the garden for days..we’ ve had some nice rain for the past few. I always appreciate it as it saves from paying WEB and the critters around the kunuku can get a nice drink. I often wonder who the goats and donkey and feral animals survive weeks without water.

 

My windsurf clients are so happy this week. It’s a great change from the previous two weeks where we had no wind at all.

The windsurf /kite scene in Bonaire this week is pure heaven. Men are on 6.0 meter sails and lighter sailors are on 4.5 meter sails. Due to the cold snap in the US and the severe winter, I am blessed with a lot of last minute bookings to Bonaire. Air prices are WONDERFUL so it’s a great time to come down.

 

The island of Antigua has elections soon. Let’s hope the new leadership can bring about some positive change and the old boyz club mentality disappears.

Well a sad group of windsurf clients head home this weekend and a fresh group head down. Monday is the first 2009 Andy Brandt ABK Windsurf Clinic and it looks like MORE light wind.

In Antigua there was a sad horrifying event where as Captain Drew Gollan was murdered in English Harbour as he and his partner and their child headed to their rental after dinner. The island is reeling. This crime has sent shockwaves throughout the Caribbean. We all look to Minister Baldwin Spencer and the authorities to create a plan to address this moral crisis on Antigua. I cannot hide the fact that there is a serious crisis. The local on local crime is out of control. When it goes into the tourism sector we all tend to react more sadly. RIP Drew. Google this brilliant young Aussie..he loved whales and the Caribbean…

We need a wind dance or a sacrifice or something to appease the wind gods and goddesses..it’s abysmal for the windsurfers on island. At least the divers can enjoy the East side.

www.windguru.cz is predicting some decent winds which will make the kiters and windsurfers no doubt, very happy. I imagine small craft advisories will be out. The island is rather quiet these days. I trust the air sales from Amsterdam on KLM and the US on Delta and CO will entice many to take a last minute trip. Europe and the East coast of the US are having a hard Winter.

The sun is shining and it’s a glorious day in Bonaire. There is a light breeze perfect for our windsurf clients. The masses have left so it’s more tranquil on island. As far as occupancy goes numbers IMHO are way down. Some restaurants are empty..others full. Delta and CO are courting people offering some killer air fares to come from the US to Bonaire. I am hoping for some last minute inquiries so I may pay my bills.

The traditional Pagara’s are happening all over the island today. Local business’s traditionally light a cache of rows of firecrackers for good luck and prosperity. It’s pretty loud and smoky and fun. Selibon our trash company cleans up right away and moves on to the next venue. I hear Curacao has one 2 miles long. The big parties are at Salsa and Buddy Dive. Havana know doubt will have a rocking session to. Me, I am spending my first New Years Eve home alone with the dogs, Luci and Confienza and cats, Alfred, Dora Lora and Mamma. I have either Dengue or influenza. Can’t get a diagnosis as the ER was backed up and the doctors are off for vacation until next week. My eyes, back and body ache and I have a high fever. Before that I had a lower GI thing that I prefer to blame on the cruise ships.  Yes, Emerald Princess posted red alert for Novovirus. Awell, tis the season.

It’s been raining off and on HARD for days. The winds from Omar that destabilized my palm trees and weakened them are making the trees move the other way with the recent winds. Not sure how to keep them grounded as my land is pure coral. I guess the best plan is to buy some dirt and make some huge mounds to try and keep them anchored. Any tips are welcome. The streets and side walks are all muddy and messy. It is also chilly. I have griep like everyone else on island so am bundled up in a jacket and hat. According to wind reports the trades will come down a bit.

What a week to be on Bonaire if you windsurf or kite. Wow…lots of rain the past 24 hours as well. Mega cruise ships are in much to the dismay of many. Tourists on island for the week cannot book tours or excursions because so many are tied up with cruise ship contracts. Today I went birding with Biologist Jerry Ligon from Dive Adventure. The roads are jammed with taxis in tranquil Dos Pos (Rincon). Washington Park was packed at the visitor’s center with the “pod people” today. Yesterday, Sorobon was a mess too with the masses at Bonaire Windsurf Place.  

 

I wish the government explored smaller boutique line ships vs the mega Princess Line and QMII. Awell, who listens to the little people?

Andy Brandt’s last ABK Windsurf Camp of 2008 was a great success with a mismash of wind. It started out nuking and went down hill. Still the sailors had a great time. Windguru predicts some good wind next week. My fingers are crossed.  The cruise ship madness kicks in soon my to my dismay.  Fortunately they avoid Jibe City for the most part.

The winds returned today. It’s perfect windsurf weather.

 

The cruise ships are back. The tourist numbers are increasing as the weeks progress. ABK hosts their first windsurf clinic Dec. 13^th so many of my guests arrive next weekend. I pray the wind sticks around.

 

A large boat caught fire Thur. and burned in the harbour. It was towed to Klein Bonaire where it sank. It was a total loss. The owner was diving and returned to find his boat engulfed in flames. I saw some photos of the disaster.

I was talking to a colleague who fly from Bonaire to San Juan Wed. Due to the volcanic ash present it took 3.5 hours to fly West and over to San Juan. Any news from our MNI correspondent?

 

Light winds prevail. The island is lush green due to weeks of heavy rains. The Salinas (Salt pans) are full of water and water fowl. Cruise ship season is expected to be much busier much to the dismay of many who favour smaller cruise lines visiting vs the mega ships. We simply do not have the infrastructure, IMHO.

The island got a bit of rain and wind Sunday. It’s the time of year to see a wetter weather pattern in Bonaire. My friend posted on Facebook that a stranded female sea lion was spotted at Darkwood Beach in Antigua. Hopefully she will be assisted. Apparently she broke away from her home during Omar. She resided at an aquarium in St. Kitt.

Bonaire was hit with some heavy rains and stormy weather earlier today. My missing cat of 10 days finally came home. I guess I have to thank the weather which scared her home. Mamma is must be Australian in her past life as she does these walk abouts periodically.

I woke at 1 AM to heavy rain and thunder and lightning. The power flickered and went off. I need white noise to sleep so turned my portable radio on to hear fuzz.  The animals were antsy pacing and crying and seeking out attention. I was not in the mood. Around 4 AM I started to doze off in time to hear KLM take off in the opposite direction. More wind reversal.

 

I got out early to pay bills. The roads are flooded in areas. It’s a muddy mess. The road in front of Harbour Village marina was flooded from the salina into the sea. Some yards are filled with water. My friend who lives in the sea area called Crown Keys as part of Sabadeco is running pumps 24.7. The streets above have no drainage so the water runs down in torrents to her area. It’s a mess.

 

I have yet to hear how the coral reef held up. More reports to come.

Bonaire is springing back nicely. Power and internet back on.  Town was full and the lines for gas long. Lots of beach rubble on the South road past Cargil Salt.

Could someone give Mike Seidel (Weather Channel) a tutorial on the pronounciation of the islands. Haa…

 

Does anyone have tips on what to do with my large 4 year old Palm. It toppled over a bit. Roots still intact but it’s at an angle. I propped it up. Any other tips to help it regain it’s rooting?

We are still getting pummeled by the influence of Omar. No thunder so I slept pretty well. The rain bands are intense. The wind is pretty strong as well. I saw some photos of storm damage. The area in Playa along the shore road was hit pretty bad. Some structural damage.  I drove around late around 5 PM and people were still out and about. For me, a Cape Codder, it’s like a N’or Easter. My plants are being pruned a bit and the house is getting whipped with rain. All the pets are inside hiding. We have power and internet. Only a one hour timeframe without both. I suspect people will stay put today.

 

AA did not fly last night into Bonaire. I heard a regional carrier take off about 20 min. ago. I personally would not want to be on a small plane today.

I drove to Kralendijk to buy pet food and run errands. There are massive puddles everywhere. The seaside road known as Playa Lechi is closed as the sea is sending massive waves and spray over the road. I managed to traverse down the northern end of the street and could not believe the sea? It is angry and frothy brown. We still have power and internet which I greatly appreciate.

We have a lot of rain last night ending the 41^st Regatta. At midnight fireworks closed the event in rainy conditions. Today there is a little breeze and puffy clouds. I hestitate to clean the patio as the dogs will put muddy pawprints everywhere. I am also not in the mood to go outside as my neighbor ties her crying puppy 24.7 away from the family. It is a pitiful sound. I wish folks understood dogs are pack animals and isolation on a chain is cruel.

Around 10 AM the skies turned dark here in Belnem. Thunder boomed overhead and the skies opened up sending down blissful rain. The air became chilly. The dogs begged to come inside to sleep. The torrential downpours lasted about 1 hour. My rain barrels are full again. The wind is practically non existent…blue sky is peaking out from under the puffy clouds.

The weather is weird. Typically in Kralendijk the winds are offshore and flat. Today the kids were rolling in the waves brought in by a strong onshore swell. The freestylers were having a blast in a lovely AM windsurf session. This kind of weather is very unusual..

Now the winds are lighter and it’s definitely humid. Strange weather..

I woke at 1 AM to heavy duty thunder and lightning. Heavy rain spread in and a wind reversal. My dogs went berserk so I brought them inside. The winds were perhaps gusting 20-40. Wicker baskets, laundry and what not were blowing all over the yard. It was very intense for over 40 min. Now at 10:11 AM EST the winds have reversed. The chop is high down near salt pier. The dive boats are rocking and rolling and divers are coming in from what must have been some interesting dive conditions..It’s a very odd weather pattern here in Bonaire.

Just as I planned to wash the patio and launder the doggies beds, the rains came..I quickly ran to uncover my rain barrel and moved all the plants outside in the rain..The sky is grey and the winds are light. There is a large blob heading our way. Rain rain you are MOST welcome here in the B of the BES Islands, Bonaire, Statia and Saba.

Winds have returned to Bonaire, light but indeed some wind. We had a brief rainfall to top off the rain barrels. The sea is very warm. Tonight there is a huge DJ competition. If the wind is right I can hear it 5 miles away, at my house.

The heat lightning is amazing..Mother Nature is putting on quite the show. My massage therapist is having horrid allergies as I am. I suspect the Sahara Dust is the culprit. Further convincing me was the incredibly red sunset.

The ticks are bad in Bonaire. My friend, a property manager, spied many ticks in one of his houses where there are NO pets. Hopi strano.

We have a wind reversal. Kralendijk harbour has cross chop making it hard to wakeboard according to my friends. The winds are coming from the opposite direction and it’s HOT HOT HOT. Not much to do but wash floors and drink cold water. I am dreaming of Calamari Salad at Wil’s Tropical Grill tonight and a cold Pina Colada.

At 12 I took my Stand Up Paddle Board out and paddled around Lac Bay leaving it at Kontiki so friends may use it. I walked back to the windsurf area and notice dark clouds. By 12:45 the winds were howling about 30 knots. I grabbed the smallest sail I could find, a 4.2 meter (WAY too big) and my 87 liter Angulo board and headed out. It was sick. I could not hold on at all. I made about 10 runs and gave up. The winds backed off but I suspect more is coming.
