I see there has not been a posting from Barbados since Oct
22nd - so here is one. The rains, thank goodness - what
an awful lot we had over the past 10 weeks - have now
abated - and we are back into glorious sunny days, with
cool nights and the ODD shower, the island is greener than
I can ever remember it for the 11 years I have been here,
for this time of year. Another hurricane season done with
no repercussions for Barbados. I know it is early yet, but
while I am posting may I wish everyone a safe and happy
Xmas season.

As I write this the rain is pouring in the South-Eastern part of the island...We've had rain just about every day for the last few days and I'm beginning to wonder how much more the earth can handle...As a matter of fact, I drove through several inches of water in areas of Christ Church and St. Philip this morning....A quick glance east on the satellite indicates a large area of red which bears watching...Is this an indication of more rain headed our way? Stay tuned..... LGW "Dance like no-one's watching"

Barbados was under flood watch today and believe me I
watched the flood come into my garden. Second time in
less than a week that I have my own private 8 ft deep lake
in the hollow at the side of the house. Right now it is
receding slowly as the rain has abated and we actually
have had for a couple of hours now some veiled sunshine.
Definately no full moon showing for us tonight. Certain
schools will remained closed tomorrow because they have
been flooded and many meetings cancelled tonight because
of the state of the roads. I just want some dry days to be
able to cut my grass that is overdue by 1 week, and grows
each hour, which is not quite the ticket when you have 4
big dogs.

I'm in agreement with the previous poster. Seems like Flood Watches have become
a daily occurrence here in Barbados. As of now all schools are closed as many
roads are flooded or even impassable.
I'm sure there'll be many stories to tell later this afternoon once we all
begin the trek home.

The rain, the rain won't go away. We're under flood
watch till four today! Another wet day here in Cane Garden Park, with no
sunshine in sight over the gully. Lightning and thunder have started and it
has become very dark. A cool steady rain has been falling. The kids did not
want to get out of bed this morning...perfect stay-under-the-covers weather!

I just learnt that the FLOOD WATCH that was in
effect for Barbados overnight has been discontinued. Wow, didn't even know that
the island was under a flood watch. This has been the case alot recently. It
seems that the only people that know of the watches and warning are the Met
officials and a few selected people at radio stations across
Barbados.
I've also notice that when we do hear about a
watch/warning on some stations it is never repeated within the time span of the
said warning/watch. So if you miss it the first time you will never
know.
I guess that we don't want to alarm the
citizens.

- Flooding in Barbados
|
- From: "Mark" <markbgi at caribsurf.com>
- Date: Fri, 10 Oct 2008 06:26:12 -0400
|
It's like a "wait and see who will be
flooded today" situation. Barbados has seen flooding in a different
parish everyday this week. The week started with a funnel cloud over the north
of the island during Sunday's rally but luckily it did not
develop fully.
Monday - St Andrew
Tuesday - St Peter - Speightstown, Road View /
St Michael - Warren', Green Hill
Wednesday -
Thursday - St George - Charles
Row Bridge
Friday - ????
St. George & St Michael was probably the worst
affected parishes this week. Yesterday DEMA and the Barbados Defense Force were
mobilised to assist with rescuing motorists and residents in the two
parishes.
The alarm was raised around noon when local
programming was interupted on 929.fm for a statement from Ms. Judy
Thomas Director Department of Emergency Management (DEMA). Ms Thomas
painted a picture of the extreme flooding in St George and described the
situation as "grave".
Hours later the water made its way to the capital
city, Bridgetown - where it flooded the carpark of The Queen Elisabeth
Hospital and surrounding areas including the River Bus Stand.

We have just had the most tremendous thunder and
lightening storm complete with driving rain and high
winds, here on the South coast. The road has flooded next
to me and the water is gushing down into my garden. I
actually stayed in the main hallway with my dogs as the
lightening strikes were so intense and the thunder rattled
the house. Can't ever remember ever having seen a storm
so wild. Amazing the power stayed on. Still raining but
skies getting brighter.

Approximately 10 minutes ago, what sounded like metal flapping woke me from a deep slumber. I got up and looked outside to see the trees in my neck of the woods swaying violently. The wind is extremely high and I can hear the sound of thunder intermittently. I wondered if were experiencing a Tropical Depression as I knew that thunder showers were predicted to affect us yesterday. As I write, the rain is pouring, the wind continues and my insect screens are making a huge racket. I pray for my fellow islanders in the Turks and Caicos as they experience Ike's wrath. Its the third straight day of afternoon rain in
Barbados. Tuesday and Wednesday saw flooding in the northern parishes
whilst the south remained sunny and dry. Unlike yesterday (Wednesday) the met
office has issued no flood watches or warnings for central & northern
Barbados. Light rain in the north right now but ive just been from the
airport and it has been scattered showers between the south and here in the
north.
Thunder can be heard coming from the north of
the island and fork-lightning can be observed off the north west
coast.

I agree with the posting from Bonaire - in all the years I
have lived in Barbados - 11 now - I cannot remember an
August that has been so hot and sticky and humid and
windless - down right uncomfortable. No wind hardly day or
night.. today we had heat thunder for at least 4 hours

again nothing moving. Tourists must be loving this weather

Jeff Masters writes that 3 of the 4 computer models agree
that there is something serious developing out in the

this is probably the first really big ?? - (we don't know

Well I was supposed to be going to the Emancipation
Celebrations this afternoon and to the Finals tonight, but it looks like I will
be staying at home with the radio and the TV. Here in St. Thomas we can see
the rain coming across the gully and guage when to send the kids out to get
the laundry off the line just before a downfall. This morning we didn't
have a chance. It really came down hard and fast! The dryer will get a workout
today.
It's still raining and it looks like this is an all day
affair. OOH! Just heard thunder. The wind kicks up from seemingly all directions
just before the downpours, making it a game for the kids to guess
which windows to close and which can remain open.
All in all, lovely day to stay indoors.

Ok - So.. I don't remember the weatherman calling for what
we are experiencing right this minute. In fact for the
last 15 minutes. There is a minor hurricane blowing out
there - with the winds whipping and spraying the rain off
the roofs in all directions. The wind was coming from the
east but now I have the south windows locked up too as it
started to come through those. I see no traffic on the
road in front of me - although to be honest I can hardly
see the road for the rain. The satellite is still showing
a very large blob still to pass over us - NOT a good day
for the beach and family picnics as today in Barbados as
it is a National Holiday Emancipation Day - leading into
tomorrow with our Crop-over festival celebrations. Another
holiday on Monday. I hear thunder now and the rain is
subsiding a bit. Happy to be indoors.

One of the many web sites I use in the Hurricane Season is
Stormsurf for wave heights. I have found them to be
fairly realiable. They give a 7 day forecast of the
Atlantic as the waves are subjected to winds. They are
showing as of now by Thursday night of next week, as far
as they can project yet, at 35W - 17N there is a doozy of
a storm that has brewed as it came from Africa and
according to the direction of the swells it is heading
directly for the Caribean islands. I shall keep watching
it's path and hopefully it will dissipate before reaching
us.

"I can see clearly now the rain is gone!!" Some would recognise the words of that song. Thought those words might have a very applicable meaning this morning as the bright sunshine has returned and all of yesterday's clouds and rain has faded away. There is a bit of haze about and the winds are at quite a good clip in the vicinity of 20-25kts. Most likely a wind surge following the Tropical Wave that passed through yesterday. Next Wave due in the vicinity in about 5 or 6 days time I think. Until then it looks like "Fair to partly cloudy and breezy with a few scattered showers" would be a good bet for the forecast leading up to that time unless something changes quite quickly as can happen with the weather as we know so well. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Numerous showers have been about all day. What a day of rain!! I have measured 24.6mm so far and it does not look like we are through this all yet. Seems like a few other islands may have been experiancing more activity than we have so far. Dominica, Martinque and Guadeloupe seemed to have had some activity during the past night while today it looks like it was Grenada, Tobago and Trinidad that bore the brunt of it today. The Wave likely had some support from the ITCZ in that area as well. We're thankful for the rain and look forward to more!!! Anybody from Grenada that can give us a report of what it has been like there today? We would be glad to hear.

It certainly did rain nearly all night, over 47 mm
recorded at the airport and I sure other parts of the
island including me received more than that. It is still
raining off and on now but there are some breaks in the
sky. I am not too sure about the cricket as the
weatherman is calling for continuation of the tropical
wave showers with possible thunder storms. But clearing
this afternoon and wouldn't you know it - the next 7 days
show 31 degrees, sunshine with scattered clouds.

It was threatening rain all day as we were under the
influence of a tropical wave but we managed to get to
about 4pm before we had our first showers. Thank Goodness
as today was the first of cricket between the Australians

Today for the first time it seems in months, we have had
some welcome tropical rains. I used to have lovely grass
but it all died with the heat and lack of rain - but
tonight before darkness settled sprouts of green have
already popped up AND also for the first time in as many
months the tree frogs are actually out there singing their
hearts out. I know in a couple of months from now I will
be wishing the rain would disappear mainly because I have
LOTS of dogs and they are constantly in and out of the
house - but for the moment it a refreshing change to see
everything clean and perky and have that dust that was
everywhere washed away. Wishing everyone a safe hurricane

Just a tweak of moisture about early this morning resulting in a very brief passing shower about 5:30am. Likely associated with the weak Wave passing by south of us which had a small bulge of moisture pushing nothwards a bit as evidenced on the satellite photos. Only 0.3mm of rainfall was recorded by the rain guage. Still a bit of instability about and it kinda looks like another brief shower or two may yet materialise. However as of now we have bright sunshine with us and chances look good for another warm sunny day on the island. The instability should recede as the daytime continues to heat up and the Wave continues westwards.

Good morning from Barbados!!
We are in bright sunshine once again today as we have been
for the past few days. No immediate sign of anything changing too soon either!!
Conditions are holding quite stable.
We have been seeing a couple of early Tropical Waves but
these so far have had little or no impact on Barbados. They have mostly been
quite weak and have been keeping well south of us and colliding with the South America mainland. Most convective activity have
been in conjunction with the ITCZ between 5* and 8* North.
So anybody coming to see us within the next couple of days
make sure you have plenty of suntan lotion in your bag!!!!!!
