Well- what to say. Not only is this thing sitting on us, the rains are doing
an energizer bunny. This is nuts. The seas are crazy and some even crazier
kite boarders did not heed the "stay out-pool is closed" warning. Tomorrow
will tell what the final tally is, but thank goodness, no serious injuries or
worse. Small blessings. I will post tomorrow if I can get my camera to work
(graceful me sent it swimming today). Good luck to all in Omar's path. Time
to squeegee out the house (again!).

Hi!!

It's been raining verry hard for a couple of hours on the island.
Where I live we don't have problems with flooding but there is some
parts on the islands where they do have.

It is also windy outside.

Stay safe,

Well, isn't this shaping up to be one heck of a season.
To those who suffered Ike's visit, our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Godspeed for a swift recovery. If you are in a position to help, please do so.
I wish I had the means, but I only have skills and prayers to offer. To those
in his path, take heed and prepare. It seems the forecast models are befuddled
with this seasons storms.

Compared to what is happening north of us, our weather is positively boring-
very strange, but boring. Last Thursday Hanna sent some feeder bands our way.
We had wind reversals and some unusual seas. I am going to try to attach some
photos. Today we had the wind shift 180 degrees to due south then die. The
current did not- it picked up. Made for a very interesting day of "sailing".
Glad we put paddles onboard as that is how we came back. Some beautiful
towering cumulus clouds to the south west might offer a light show tonite.

Let us see where Ike goes next. The Gulf Coast has it's head spinning. I hope
they will be spared further grief this season, as do all our islands.

Good luck!
Safe regards,
Amy

- Thunder

First, I would like to say good luck to all in Florida who are about to get
their 3rd visit from Fay.
This morning I was awoken by a loud clap of thunder and a wet kitten landing on
my head. For the first time in a long time, we have thunder, lightning and a
patter of rain. I hope it breaks the heat- it has been a tad much. I spoke
with my parents in NJ and they asked "How hot is it?" Hot and humid enough for
me to turn on the AC- and I don't like AC, it just cuts the humidity.
Looking to the east and the calendar, I hope the rest of the season stays
quiet, but we shall see!
Take care and stay prepared.

- The rains have come
  • From: Amy Spagnola <snubagirl at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Tue, 24 Jun 2008 23:31:27 +0100
Well- we finally got some much needed rain. The last good rainfall was
November 24, and today, June 24 saw a doozy. Downpours to near white out for a
few minutes. The airport reported a gust of 44 mph or 70 kmph at one point.
It started with a drizzle at 1pm then a steady rain about 2. About 2:30 is
when we got the winds. It was nice to watch- if you were inside- I got soaked
at work on the beach. It is still a bit grey and chilly, but a welcome relief.
On a side note, the fire department here is probably very happy with the rain.
Today is St. John's day and Dia Dera Gai (Bury the Rooster). The tradition is
to gather all the dried weeds in your yard into a pile and burn them. This
started in the old days when folks here grew corn, wheat, flax and cotton.
They would clear the fields, burn the debris and use the ashes to fertilize the
land. Now we don't farm so much- it is not enough rain normally. If it is
very dry, the fire department is hopping. Todays rains kept things nicely
under control. There is a slight wafting of smoke and a pale haze in some
parts of those determined to keep the tradition alive.
The Dera Gai celebrations involve having a fake rooster on the dance floor and
some very talented dancers do a folkloric dance to celebrate the new planting
season. Something to see. The men are blindfolded and must find the rooster.
In the old days, the winner would be awarded the live rooster to put in the
stew pot. Now the beautiful and colorful dance takes place, but the lucky
rooster lives another day- hence the fake rooster. Ahhhh-ruba- one happy (and
today wet) island. Looks like the sun will be out tomorrow for another day of
sailing. Take care to all!

- Sticky Hot Season Began!
  • From: Aruba Hurricane <arubahurricane at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Sat, 3 May 2008 20:48:03 +0100
Hi All Out there,

Here's my first report from Aruba for this year or hurricane season. Last about 2 weeks I can say it has been pretty much like if there's somewhere around a hurricane. So hot and sticky. No rain yet but we're waiting kind of it for it.... Just so the heat will cool down a bit. Looks like it's august now...
Anyway, still some days to go before the real hurricane season hits again, hopefully a weak season this year...
