To day,the historic non hurricane related sweel event, the most important since the perfect storm in 1991,arrived in Guadeloupe.
The waves are since yersterday night in the range of 4 to 5 meters, with peaks commonly rising to 7,2 meters!!!!! These are records by the Meteo France buoy located at the north tip of Guadeloupe " La Vigie".

Roads inundated, also houses ,beaches erosion . No injuries at this time. The red alert is always posted. What news elswere??

According to my sisters in GUADELOUPE (SAINTE-ANNE), dishes felt and have been broken inside a lot of houses. People fear  aftershocks and couldn't sleep this night.
schools will be closed tomorrow and main bridge will be monitored Friday morning.

According to physical monitors from MARTINIQUE (through TV MARTINIQUE), the earthquake geologically lasted 25 minutes but people felt this phenomena only three minutes.

  • Date: Thu, 29 Nov 2007 02:43:05 +0100
I've just watched TV GUADELOUPE and I phoned to my sister who lives in SAINTE-ANNE.

Earthquake last about three minutes. A lot people panicked. Two unhabitant fled through windows from 2nd floor and were injured near POINTE-A-PITRE.
Hospital received about ten persons who felt sickness within 30 minutes.
A big rock came from a top of hill and made a hole on the roof othe house of a grand-mother. The rock landed on his bed. Hopefully she wasn't in this room (ABYMES, BOIVINS).
Situation is not critical in GUADELOUPE.

The quake was hardly felt in Guadeloupe;some injuries, and minor damages ,a road closed . But Martinica was more concerned, with two buldings collapsed in Fort de France and some injuries. At this time,no reported dead

- Greetings from Venezuela
  • From: "John Burnie" <john at yachtindaba.com>

Made a quick dash down to Venezuela for a short break. The weather is truly stunning down here despite the lack of any wind near the mainland coast. I am told by another cruiser that the Golfe De Cariaco has been unusually squally this year with frequent thunderstorms. However the weather here (near Puerto De la Cruz) is wonderful and there are more dolphins, pelicans and turtles than you see anywhere else in the more northern Caribbean waters. There are virtually no other yachts anywhere and saw only one other yacht on the cruise, anchored in Mochima National Park. This is probably the last great cruising wilderness in the Caribbean and I highly recommend it as a place to visit. Saw flock of Scarlet Ibis this morning in a cloudless blue sky – truly exceptional and no Invest 90 whatever to worry about!! Back to Guadeloupe soon as the TRISKELL CUP is happening in Pointe a Pitre in November!!!

- Shall we sail or not???

The defined circulation in the 96L system SW of the Cape Verde Islands looks suspiciously like the next event for coming our way. Sitting waiting in Grenada but hoping to leave on a short cruise to Venezuela – what on earth has happened to 97L?? We have prepared to wait it out for some squalls but we have zero wind here - looks like nothing will come either. Shall I go or shall I stay!?

- Humberto on the way?
  • From: "John Burnie" <john at yachtindaba.com>
  • Date: Wed, 12 Sep 2007 13:21:29 -0400

I am putting our vessels on Hurricane watch in Guadeloupe this weekend as I am inclined to believe that this TD 8 is HUMBERTO on the way - there is a possibility that our island could be impacted and we always have a lot to do to prepare the yachts safely. It is still some way off yet but this is not a season to take risks. Most storms have tracked considerably further south than expected. I enclose two images that convince me this hurricane is on the way.

- Hurricane Hunter flies into FELIX
  • From: "John Burnie" <john at yachtindaba.com>

On this link there is a 7 min video of hurricane hunter C130 flying into the eye of FELIX at 2.00 am on Sept 3rd . This was the mission that flew immediately after the abandoned N42RF flight where the aircraft encountered severe turbulence. My admiration for the crew who fly these aircraft on these missions is huge. The video of the moon in the eye wall is quite amazing!!

The mid–day satellite pass looks good today - I feel increasingly confident that the earlier predicted storms may pass as waves only. Can anyone explain fully why there is quite so much west - sou’west movement in the weather systems this year?

- Invest 98L et al
  • From: "John Burnie" <john at yachtindaba.com>
  • Date: Sat, 1 Sep 2007 11:04:13 -0400

In this clear satellite picture you can see TS FELIX spinning off Grenada (where we currently are!) and progressing west over the northern part of S America towards the outlying islands. Keep your heads down everyone!!

At 38 / 40 west you can see the item of interest (now recorded by NOAA as Invest 98L) and behind that a wave coming off Africa that is forecast by some models to develop. Anxious days ahead I feel. Here in Grenada TS FELIX was certainly expected and we certainly prepared for it as we did with DEAN. I am however wondering if some were not caught slightly off guard as it really was quite unexpectedly intense on the south coast of Grenada early this morning.

- TS FELIX in Grenada
  • From: "John Burnie" <john at yachtindaba.com>
  • Date: Sat, 1 Sep 2007 08:04:59 -0400

Greetings from Guadeloupe correspondent who has come to “storm free” Grenada in the south!!

Here are some pictures from my yacht 7.45am in TRUE BLUE BAY where we are on hurricane moorings. The wind picked up at about 3.00am when TS FELIX got going. From 4.00 am we have had 35 kts constant and between 4.30 and 5.30 we had 45 kts gusting to 55 kts. The highest recorded gust was 61 kts on my reliable instrumentation. At this time we have 30– 35kts dropping in the lulls to about 25.

At 5.00 am one 45 ft yacht broke its mooring and ended up hard against the pontoon in the photo in the nasty swell. The yacht’s manager arrived at first light and after a short struggle we managed to secure the vessel back on to a mooring. Nasty storm this but time for coffee and a hot shower as the worst is probably now over!!

  • Date: Sat, 18 Aug 2007 08:48:54 -0400

Due to the threat of DEAN we moved quickly south out of Guadeloupe and I am in fact in Grenada. Over two nights now we have been watching the most spectacular lightning and convection I have ever seen in the tropics. It blew very hard in the night (38 - 40kts in one gust) in True Blue Bay where we are still on a hurricane mooring. We are so far from the eye now but we still feel the effects - the power of this hurricane is truly awesome. It is now forecast to be a Cat 5 near Jamaica in 24 hrs and I wish all Jamaicans sanctuary and safety from this terrible force that is bearing down on them.

There are storm warnings from Antigua all the way south to Grenada now – there really is no hiding from such a large system. I tend to believe Guadeloupe will be impacted and our vessels are fully prepared for heavy wind and rain. 7 inches predicted with 4ft surge if the system creeps north.

- Colour version re: previous message 35 west
  • From: "John Burnie" <john at yachtindaba.com>
  • Date: Wed, 11 Jul 2007 16:08:03 -0400

Qualifying statement posted by expert forecaster:

The tropical Atlantic is quiet this morning and this morning's Infrared Satellite Imagery shows no areas of immediate concern or interest, but this could change by this weekend or early next week. The reason for this statement is that this morning's Computer Forecast Guidance shows some potential development from a tropical disturbance out in the far eastern Atlantic. The GFS and Canadian models are forecasting a rather strong tropical disturbance to move north of the Leeward Islands on Sunday and then be located northeast of the Bahamas by next Wednesday and there is the potential for this disturbance to develop into a tropical depression this weekend or early next week as there will be low wind shear values, adequate moisture and very warm sea surface temperatures. The reason for this forecast is that there is a tropical disturbance near 35 Degrees West Longitude seen on Infrared Satellite Imagery and it seems that these computer forecast models want to develop this disturbance further this weekend into next week.

Here is 1800 UTC view of the disturbed weather and wave at 35 west. Confess I cannot see anything particularly ominous -  but some models still suggest development by week-end – perhaps because sea is warm and wind shear is low.

Good clear view on the east satellite today showing all the shower activity in the south. Apart form the odd shower we have seen little rain in Guadeloupe this month and continue to be always north of any wave influence this year. Another fine week-end passed and brisk winds and bright days made for good sailing and swimming – long may it last!

These are interesting hi intensity pictures taken of Hurricane BONNIE (1998) and Hurricane FRAN (1996). Nothing like this going on in Guadeloupe at the moment I am pleased to say. The prefecture has in fact introduced a hose-pipe ban as of yesterday. No washing of cars gardens or boats allowed. Oh well our boats will just have to stay dirty!
