- Getting breezy
  • From: <joymar at candw.ky>
  • Date: Mon, 20 Aug 2007 01:11:18 -0500

Giving this a try but my 9PM post does seem to have appeared. Definitely getting breezy but doesn't seem too bad. Water is off but power still on. No rain yet that I can hear. Seems to have moved even further south now. Will post update in morning. Storm is moving very quickly so it will pass us earlier than expected and even further offshore. Good news for everyone here at least.

  • From: "Chris McTaggart" <cmctagga at candw.ky>

Good Evening All,

I know it is about 48 hours since I last posted and I promised to try and keep regular updates but the Airline Business was operating in high gear with the evacuation mode. Folks all I can say is I am so proud to be part of a company that has put so much effort and dedication in providing a service to our community and the tourism industry. Cayman Airways, the management and staff have been working 24 hours around the clock for almost 4 days operating as many flights it could in order to give local families and tourists the opportunity to leave the island under the approaching storm. As a part of the management team and an employee I must say to Sir Turtle, once again a fantastic job well done. I am sure others will agree and add their comments later.

Now back to reality..I am trying to post before the electricity goes off. Dean is heading our way for sure and currently it looks like he will pass slightly south which is certainly much better that a direct hit. Hopefully he will maintain his track to the west our even move further south. We will still have the impact of the most powerful sector which is the N and NW section.

Currently winds have begun and are increasing steadily giving the first felling of the approaching storm. Winds are steady out of the NE at 15 gusting to 22 knots. Temperature is at 85 degrees and the Pressure is 29.76 and falling. Skies have broken cloud cover. No rain yet, just a lightning show in the distance.

I expect that Tropical Storm winds will begin to be felt starting at around 2-3 a.m. and of course increasing thereafter. I suspect the power will soon be cut so I will shorten my post. Hopefully I will be able to report after the storm has past using my laptop with the generator. Wow….the noise of a generator running all day, brings back Ivan memories.

Everyone out there in the path of Dean wherever you are, please be safe and careful.

Have a peaceful night, sleep well.

Best wishes,

Captain Chris

Title: Still have water and electricity.....

The winds are certainly picking up and there is still lightening in the distance (so it seems from our house - just off South Sound).

However, we still have water AND power.  Much appreciation to the utility companies - now I understand why our bills are so high!! :-)

Seriously, just walked outside and it is very windy, but not as bad as I……..not going to jinx us.

Let this thing pass to the South, by at least 200 miles, then (from personal experience) we will only get some bigger than usual waves.

Fingers crossed.

:-)

Well 10:18 now and the winds are picking up now. Still have power for now. Lots of lightening out there but not a drop of rain as yet. Looks as though we are going to be spared the brunt of the storm and will only get a glancing blow. My concern is for those in Belize and the Yucatan. Well time to sign off for the night and bring the dogs inside. Will report back in the morning or whenever we get power back.

- Evening update
  • From: <joymar at candw.ky>
  • Date: Sun, 19 Aug 2007 21:45:10 -0500

All is very quiet hear at Garden Retreat condos in George Town. No wind or rain as yet. The water is apparently being turned off soon island wide so likely eveyone will make it an early evening - and need it after our extensive preparations! Power will remain on until weather dictates otherwise. (This is my third time trying to post this so hopefully it does not eventually appear triplicated!)

As this site is primarily for those not on island and want to know what is happening "on the ground", we are happy to report, here at least) that we are quite optimistic that we have been spared the worst with the recent movement further south. What a difference from the mood yesterday!

I will post further overnight or early morning if the situation worsens.

A good night to all.

Title: A few winds....

I heard on the radio the water was going to be shut off at 9pm this evening, and CUC will cut the electricity as soon as necessary (due to lightening etc).

Winds are picking up a little so need to take the dish down.

Will report later.  Fortunately, the pictures I took this afternoon didn't show anything other than Nor-westerly type of action.  Lets hope it stays that way.

I have just returned from a dump run from West Bay to George Town and back, getting home at 9pm.
Streets are quiet with very little traffic out. There is a curfew beginning at 10pm. The radio announced that tropical storm winds will begin at 2am Monday and last until around 5pm Monday. I hope they are right and Dean seems to be listening to them.
About 1600 people are in the hurricane shelters  with a total capacity of around 4000.
Most houses are boarded up but it still amazes me that some people were just working on it.
At one house not far from me, they had the plywood yesterday morning at about 10am. At 5pm this evening, they had just boarded up four windows with three to go. And no, I know them and they did not have other distractions!
Anyways, the higher portions at the west end of the island have cars parked on all high points, as people try to avoid the storm surge damage of Ivan. I have heard of some people driving their cars to friends in the middle high areas and being dropped back to their homes in potential flood areas.
Winds are currently around 10mph with gusts to 20, The water companies have shut off city water at around 9pm. CUC says it will keep the electricity on as long as possible.
Not sure what is happening with the phone companies but hopefully they will be operational. Will see if I can post some pictures tomorrow.
Time for an early night. It's been 3 days getting ready for this - work and family. Can't do any more now but wait.

Goodnight all

Mike

It is now 8:15 p.m. and all is quiet on the North ShoreStake Bay area.  The quarter moon is shining through thick clouds but no thunder or rain at present.   We have been experiencing intermittent periods of thunder and heavy rains but these downpours  are very short in duration and then all becomes quiet for a while.

- CAYMAN BRAC - IT HAS STARTED
  • From: "mike barcroft" <mbar-cyb at candw.ky>
  • Date: Sun, 19 Aug 2007 19:51:40 -0500

Started at about 6.30 PM with an eerie but beautiful Sunset – to the East, Huge black and grey clouds, tinged with pinks and reds, being shredded by lightning – to the West, a beautiful sunset. Was on North Side – where all the birds must have gone!!

Very still and sullen – swarms of Mossies and sundry other bugs so the bats were having a filed day – Then, all of a sudden, it went BLLLLLACK!

At about 7.10, I drove across to South Side to see how things were – en route the lead elements of Hurricane Dean’s Tropical Storm Force Wind Field swept in with a vengeance – instant heavy rain and strong gusts. The Seas seem to be coming up the Iron Shore to a high level and are dirty yellow brown with all the sand they are carrying – but big waves (obviously built up for days in the Caribbean).

Sitting here – about to return to Work location – but first savouring a good pot of tea – terribly British really!! J  Will wait out for the 11.00PM Advisory – brief Clients as best as possible and then hit the sack  - sleeping always makes time go faster.

Hopefully when I get back over to the South Side again sometime tomorrow, I will still have a house?

More Later – but it will be based more on feel and noise than anything else as it is black out there right now.

I have had to lower my anemometer about 6' to protect it from damage so the wind reading may not be accurate. (No guy wires on the Radio Shack pole and a tree is partially blocking the wind) Al least we will have a record of the winds.

News is Water will be turned off at 9pm. Electricity at 10pm, or as long as they can safely keep it running. Curfew is at 10pm also, and for the duration of the storm. I will post when able.

Winds are beginning to increase to about 10-20 knots from the NE. Skies partly cloudy. No rainfall as yet. Temp 87°F Humidity 75%. Barometer 29.92 in.

Looks like the storm will track well south of Grand Cayman and that is a certainly a relief. I had fears of another "Ivan Event".

Thanks to all of you who have dropped me an e-mail. I pray for the folks in Jamaica especially those along the south coast and for those in the projected path, hunker down and keep safe.

Time for a shower before all utilities shut down.

Pleasant evening...

Not sure when CUC will be shutting off the power grid so will try to update later if we still have power. At least it looks as though this one will be here and gone quick so hopefully we wont get to much damage around the Island.

I am overlooking Mitchell’s Creek and all morning the wind has been getting stronger and we have whitecaps now in Governor’s Harbour with splashes over the seawall. I am moving into town shortly (one more car to park!) to an inland, two storey condo. I will try to post if I can get the wireless set up for my laptop there.

I have to say that Cayman is extremely well prepared and everyone has done everything humanly possible to minimize the effects of Dean. We learnt a great deal from Ivan. Vehicles are now taken to higher ground; many people have evacuated with their children thanks to the unbelievable efforts of Cayman Airways!; yards are cleared of debris and, from the amount of shopping being done in the past several days, everyone is likely well stocked with supplies.

The movement south gives us some hope that we will not be hit as hard as Ivan, still way too fresh in our lives.

Wishing all well throughout the next 48 hours.

Title: Winds are picking up

The winds have started to pick up already in Grand Cayman (South Sound area at least).  Trying to get the last few things done (securing boat etc).  I think we may start experiencing tropical storm force winds within the next few hours.  It is 180 miles between Jamaica and Grand Cayman.  That gives us approximately 7-8 hours once the eye has passed the west of Jamaica.

Will post another update once I have got everything done.  Also, I plan on taking some pictures a little later and will post them on StormCarib.

I am pleased to see that the projected path of Dean is now 64 miles south. I hope and pray it will continue to shift further south. That said, I do not wish it to affect other countries either.

Waking up this morning to light breezes 5-10 knots and bright sunshine. The airport was busy all night and that continues this morning.

Our official disaster preparedness website can be found here http://www.gov.ky/portal/page?_pageid=1142,1&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL

Be safe Jamaica....especially the along the south coast for storm surge.

Cayman.....heed the evacuation orders. I see all the cars are being parked on higher ground as I drive about.

Stay Safe. Still have final preparations to complete.

Great to see so many others posting and giving a different prospective of what is going on.

Haven't been able to post as I have been really busy with preparations. Just about have it all covered now....Whew!!

AT 11 PM AST...0300 UTC...THE GOVERNMENT OF THE CAYMAN ISLANDS HAS ISSUED A HURRICANE WARNING FOR THE CAYMAN ISLANDS.

Latest forecast track has Dean passing about 60 miles to the South....may that distance be even greater.

Lots of activity at the airport, commercial, charter and private aircraft arriving and departing.  Cayman Airways is operating extra flights to evacuate those wishing to leave.

Current Conditions
Temperature 85°F  HOT and MUGGY
Humidity  78%
Skies Partly Cloudy
Barometer 29.94"
Rainfall 0.00"

I do intend to leave my weather station operational during the storm... I will however have to lower the pole the anemometer is attached to, so the readings may not be as accurate, at least we should get some record of wind speeds....don't know if the telephone system will hold up this time, hopefully it will.  I expect we will be without power for several days if not weeks depending on the damages to the grid.  I do have a generator, so I will post when able.

Batten down Jamaica and Cayman.  This is a BIG one.

Little Cayman is beautifully calm at this moment, but waiting for the "next Ivan" to hit.  We are boarding up, packing our hurricane boxes, and having town meetings today.  More of the same tomorrow.  Dean looks like he will pass through the Western Caribbean a bit farther north than Ivan did, which will affect all three Cayman Islands in a really bad way.  Hoping for better news when we wake up tomorrow and check in.

Title: Dean.....now a Cat 4

Dean is probably yearning for an eyewall replacement cycle, and I have a feeling this will happen sooner rather than later.  Naturally we will see some weakening, and then…..well the only thing to follow is Cat 5.  I am hoping (selfishly) that the ERC will cause a wobble to the north, but with a Hurricane 600 miles deep perhaps this is merely wishful thinking.

If anyone needs a generator, I suggest going to Harbour House as most other places are sold out (and they may also be by now, call before you go).

This one WILL most certainly go down in history - lets hope it doesn't take lives with it.

Please, please, please take this storm extremely seriously if you haven't already.  We are most definitely in for a beating, even if it changes its track.

Tara.

Well it looks like 2 in 3 years!!!. Wonder what this will to the cost of electricity?? Anyway the grocery stores are all packed the gas stations seem to be pretty mellow. I'm sure that will change tomorrow. I'm going to make my trip to the gas station a little later tonight... hope that every one else doesn't do the same. All my shutters are up and the supply shopping was finished earlier in the week. With these storms comes a fair amount of work.. the more you own the more work you get.
I always get little nervous about this time. I guess after Ivan we all know what to expect.
Not much to do but wait and see, One of the models is taking a bit of a more ninthly track, so Brackers stay alert....
One thing about these storms nothing you can do will change the way things are going to unfold. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Jamaica be safe..... your first. Will post later....really need to find my camera

Title: Dean - Slight movement to the North

A slight nudge of 1 degree to the north of its last recorded path makes me a little nervous.  Of course, that is exactly what has happened.  This shift has brought the path of Dean closer to us.  Dean looked like it was weakening as it approached the Lesser Antilles, but I understand it will do this as it approaches land.

Moreover, the Dean is now moving at 25mph.  Once it hits the warmer waters of the Caribbean, who knows what it will do.  I just recall being at Rum Point three weeks ago and getting into the water felt like getting into a warm bath.  Breeding Ground?  Make your own evaluations.  Hope it slows down otherwise it could reach Jamaica a lot sooner than anticipated, and then of course, us after.

The outer eye wall seems to be struggling, from the observations I have made this evening.  However, after Ivan, I got very used to the word Eyewall Replacement Cycle.

HYPERLINK http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eyewall http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eyewall

Is this what Dean is undergoing?  I hope not and wholeheartedly doubt this as it is generally a cat 3 or above.  However, once a hurricane has gone through this transition, in the perfect conditions, it will strengthen and become more aggressive.  This is my own observation, and by no means scientific fact.

Anyways, take care all. I will endeavour to report back tomorrow.  Goodnight.

Tara

Ahhh.... Mean Dean.

I note Dean's projected path hasn't changed much for the past 24 hours now, and so I am taking no chances. Final preparation mode....shutters, yard clutter, secure boat, secure store, place orders, secure Mom's apartment, etc etc etc...whew I need to be at least 3 persons . At least we have our water, fuel, food and oh yes....house guest!! Yikes!!

Since I am not a meteorologist by profession, /(just a hobby),/ I will leave the detailed analysis to my brother Capt. Chris who "flies the skies" as a profession and report the local conditions. But looking at the charts I can see where he is coming from. Typically the NE quadrant is where the strongest winds occur.

Personally I would prefer "Himmicane" Dean pass *_no less_* than 60 miles from the Cayman Islands, North or South it doesn't matter, if indeed we will be affected by him and it certainly looks like we will. Better yet, he just dissipates, but that is not likely to happen.

Current conditions in Grand Cayman
Partly cloudy with some haze.
Temperature 87°F at 9:30am
Winds E - SE at 5 - 10 knots
Humidity 70%
Barometer 30.00 in
Rainfall 0.00"

You guys in the Eastern Caribbean....*Batten Down.*.. I trust you are all prepared for Dean. Keep us informed during and after the storm when able.

  • Date: Thu, 16 Aug 2007 07:47:32 -0500

Good Morning All,

Hi Helen…Well the north jog I speak about I hope it happens as I want the storm to pass North of Grand Cayman if indeed it is going to come close. This will put the N quadrant (the worse normally) further away from the island. That’s why I would like to see the north jog before it reaches our area. However I hope for even a more further north jog than just a little J

Off to work and first Hurricane meeting, will catch up later.

Have a good day all

Good Morning Everyone,
well while we have been sleeping Dean has not,  he is now a Hurricane.  And getting faster and stronger,  the updates from 5am EDT was 75 mph and 997mb and now at 8am its 80mph and 993mb.
We really need to get ready now, Capt Chris, thanks for watching this system closely, your right those little jiggs to the North means we could be in serious trouble.  The eye is suppose to go south of us at the moment however this system is getting bigger and it will give us bad weather for sure.
Now we just have to wait and see what happens when it leaves the other islands.  For everyone now in GRAND CAYMAN/JAMAICA   GET PREPARED NOW it will be too late at the weekend!!!!

- Posting Time - Long time
  • From: "Chris McTaggart" <cmctagga at candw.ky>

Hi Caribe Friends!

It has been so long since I have posted on the Web-Site I really feel ashamed that I have not found the time to pop in and say hello. I am so busy now flying a busy schedule and also holding the Chief Pilot position even takes up more time than before. I really don’t find much spare time to twinkle with the Ol’ puter that much.

Anyway, I figure I better get on here at least when it is most important…Hurricane time! Especially now that Dean is in town.

Well guys the forecasters’ say Dean is coming smack into the middle of the Caribbean and threatening most all the Islands in the area with its projected path. I am not too sure about this current projected path as there a few obstructions that are not very dominant yet but seems they may play a part if they mature a bit more and become more pronounced.

An upper flow from the Columbian coastline northward over the Haiti area is not very strong but maybe enough to jog Dean further to the north. If this flow is going to affect Dean you should start to see a slight tendency for him to drift more to the north as it passes the eastern island chain. If this flow effects Dean we should see a more northerly drift as he gets into the Caribbean just below Puerto Rico and certainly some sheering.

Once Dean passes south of Puerto Rico up until south of the western tip of Hispaniola he will have a free reign and direction could be erratic. This is the area that Dean will most likely make his big move to intensify. If Dean maintains the current projected path with little of the above effecting his direction then the second obstruction will be the flow from the north as he approaches the area of Jamaica. This flow should put Dean in a more westerly movement and if strong enough may see a slight WSW jogging.

I will be keeping a very close watch on Dean on an hourly basis as I am a part of the airlines Hurricane Committee and will do my very best to post here on Storm Caribe as much as possible.

I have been studying all the Atmosphere Data I can lay my hands on over the past 3 to 4 hours and now it’s getting late so I must go get some shut eye. Everyone take care out there and have a good night and a great day tomorrow.

Current Conditions in Cayman.

Clear Skies (Gorgeous, not a cloud)

Calm Winds

As I read all the other posts from my Caribbean neighbors I can't help but think Iv...... I not prepared to say that word out loud. I can't stress the word preparation enough. While it seems that the folks in the eastern Caribbean might get a category 1 or 2. It seems that we might have a slightly more potent storm to contend with. For those of you reading this from Grand Cayman that were not here in Ivan, don't treat this lightly, mother nature as a hell of a way of making herself heard. In this day in age... with this amount of warning, no one should be caught out. If you don't know what to expect ASK! This could be a life altering experience I suggest you make it as comfortable as possible. Prepare for the WORST and hope for the BEST. It;s going to be a long week for me and I'll do my best to let every one know how tings are going here in G.C.

Dear All
After listening to local radio at 5pm, they are advising that TS Dean will turn into a hurricane either late tonight or early tomorrow morning.  With this they advise we get prepared but no guarantee that it will hit!  However it will be in the area of Jamaica on sunday and Grand Cayman on monday.  They also advised that at the present moment we are not under any warnings or watches but could be by the weekend.
I am thinking of all the islands in the Lesser Antilles as you will feel it first.  Be safe and get prepared.

Just arrived back on island from a 2 week vacation in sunny, HOT, Texas and Orlando, to overcast skies and light showers last evening. Today continues with overcast/cloudy skies with intermittent showers, courtesy of the disturbance now west of us. Looks like skies may be clearing tomorrow.

Unfortunately the battery on my weather station transmitter for the temperature/rainfall/humidity readings died last week, so I did not record any data from that station for 3 days. Battery replaced, up and running now.

I know everyone in the Caribbean (and elsewhere) is keeping an eye on TD4. Let's hope it turns north fizzles out over the Atlantic, but all indications are that is not likely to happen, so we shall and must prepare for the storm.

Current conditions:
Overcast skies with intermittent showers. 0.42" so far.
Temperature 81°F, High 87°; Low 76°
Humidity 85%
Winds SE at 5-10 Knots
Barometer 29.90"

Have a wonderful evening.

Will ruin a good night out for my friend, Carrie's leaving do at HH. But at
least she had till 8ish.

The "wave" literally did just that. However, warm waters within our basin
can cause some "resting" and/or "breeding" ground. I am no meteorologist,
but I have come to understand that weather and mother nature isn't either.
I feel this will be one of those freaky years, to be remembered, very
unprecedented, and more unpredictable than ever…..look at 90e….

Hopefully, and I say this at the risk of getting much response (please do,
but not negatively, it is just an opinion), this year will be just
that………very unpredictable. At the most part, in relation to 2004 and 2005,
there were two huge and devestating storms……….nothing with mother nature is
predictable…….unfortunately we are learning this without the backup of
knowledge - but even the best of the best seem somewhat baffled…..

Anyway, here are some pics of contrast………..July flooding - August hot as
heck….sounds more like the caribbean….

HYPERLINK http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/multimedia/gallery/
http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/multimedia/gallery/

For sure the weather is changing every year right, more cyclonic activity in
the eastern and western pacific………hemespheric changes too………

Back to Cayman………thunder still outside, it appears from what I see on the
main core of the "wave" is south of us, and passing….

Lets hope it stays that way…...

Title: Nothing much to report for now.......

Thankfully 99L seemed to break away and is forecast to only possibly be a wave threat to Cayman over the next few days - I hope it passes by before Sunday and is gone by then as I have a fun day out on my boat planned!!

There has been some disturbed weather which came off the African coast earlier today, but until it has been over open seas for some time it isn't worth worry about, for now.

Other than some lightening in the distance, the air is pretty still and warm.  We already are aware of how the weather is most probably going to be in the near future, so the saying "calm before the storm" is quite appropriate now I feel!

Off to bed, will try to report any weather changes tomorrow.

Night.

Hi Tara here!!

Well at around 6am this morning we lost power.  What actually woke me up was the house shuddering during a crack of lightening and rumble of thunder.

It seems now we are having a repeat performance(ish), but at least its not early in the morning!!

A lot of much needed rain, at least my coconut trees are getting their well overdue watering (there is only so much a hosepipe can do!!).

I feel things are heating up...........thank goodness we have generators!!

Hopefully this year the gurus will be mistaken like last year.  If not, I hope no-one is complacent.

In another part of the world (my home country), things are looking grim with exceptionally odd weather for this time of the year.  My heart goes out to them.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/6914876.stm

My family are in Essex, this time last year they were having heat waves across most part of England (including the South East).  Now, my mum, who lives in Chelmsford, says they are having gail force winds (aka in some areas tropical storm force equivalent).

The world keeps a turning.

Take care all.

Just after my last post, the cumulus clouds and rainfall along Seven Mile Beach I mentioned, developed rapidly into a big thunderstorm. The system built mainly to the north of the airport and spread to the east over the North Sound. Lots of lightening and thunder accompanied it. But unfortunately no rain fall at my location, but we did have several close lightening strikes.

This one it is in the dissipating stage now, but there is a cloud build-up to the NE. Skies are clear to the south.

Even though the storm was about 3 miles from my location (near the airport), we had a lightening strike about 1/2 mile from here that hit a light pole, caught it on fire, and knocked out power for about 1- 1/2 hours. ).

These local thunderstorm events usually rain themselves out in a few hours.

The earth shakes....mmmmm....two strong earthquakes in South America this morning, one in Amazonas, Brazil and one in Jujuy, Argentina, then a 5.1 in APURE, VENEZUELA and a 5.0 - SUCRE, VENEZUELA, July 16, this side of the world certainly is seeing increased seismic activity. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/  I wonder if there is one in store for this region.  Hopefully not.
In December 2004, a few months after Hurricane Ivan, we experienced a 6.8 magnitude in Cayman. Thankfully there was little or no damage.

Now for the weather:

Beautiful weather here in Grand Cayman today. Blue skies, partly cloudy with the usual afternoon build up of cumulus clouds stretching east to west down the center of the island.  Maybe they will shed some moisture later on. Looks promising.

Current conditions.
Partly cloudy.
Temperature 91°F  Heat Index 105°F

Winds SSE at   5-10 knots
Barometer  29.98" (1015.4 mbar)

Looks like rain is falling now along Seven Mile Beach area north of the airport and where I live.

Conditions are high overcast (cold tops) with some scattered shower activity. I recorded only 0.34" since midnight on my station, most falling between 7 & 8am. We have been having this weather since Monday. Hopefully it will clear by tomorrow as I have a bunch of kids to take out on the boat.

Temperature: 82°F
Humidity: 87%
Heat Index: 91°F
Winds: SW at <5 Knots
Rainfall: .34"
Total Monthly Rainfall: 3.46"

Have a great weekend

The Upper level trough has moved back over Cayman again giving us more rain and dark clouds.

It should clear us by the weekend.

The tail end of this trough may need to be watched as it the sort of thing that breaks off, and meanders north slowly developing tropical characteristics on the way. Shear is still high and unless it drops off over the Yucatan and Gulf, it won't develop. But you never know.

Time to keep and eye on some of the models

This is my first "report" of the year and I doubt it will be my last!!

It has just been very wet and windy for best part of the day, and as I type this message, it was raining hard  (George Town area) about 10 mins ago and only just eased up.  Saw quite a bit of lightening in the distance when driving through South Sound about an hour or so ago.  Not too sure how it is now.

Lets hope Hurricane season 2007 is kind to us this year.

Very unsettled weather today, dark and damp in Cayman.

We have a weak tropical wave to the South of us and a upper level trough tot the west causing some unpleasantness with hard showers to come.

On the satellite we are under a big 'blob' of moisture.

Fortunately shear is still high and forecast to be high in the western Caribbean for a few more days. None of the models are showing any development.

Let's home we can get all this bad weather out of the way for a glorious Queens Day bank holiday weekend.

Don't forget the Flowers Sea Swim this Saturday

Some how manage to send that one before I had finished. It's to bad that one has to sit at a desk or table to be comfortable to use one of these things (got a laptop). Well as I said the weather has been typical this time of the year. How ever on Friday night we had a squall come through that made me glad to be on dry land. Lots of wind, made nice windsurfing! Getting to the point of this story, despite the weather some men just can't be kept on the dock!
Look at what these guys caught ! 146.lbs. Wahoo. New record for Cayman (not official yet.) Just shows ya never know when they're going to bite.

- Rain is Gone

The rain is gone....for now :). After having rainfall nearly every day since May 14, we have had sunshine the past 3 days, with some showers mixed in. Looks like we are in for some sunshine for awhile.

Winds were quite brisk the past 4 days from the south courtesy of TS Barry and the high pressure system over the North Eastern Caribbean.

It is not unusual for us to have 2 weeks of overcast skies and rain at this time of the year as this is the beginning of our rainy season. My observations have been that a dissipating cold front will stall out in the area and deposit it's moisture as it mixes with a trough and the warm moist winds from the south. Quite often a low pressure forms and a tropical system will develop, as happened last week, TS Barry.

We needed the rain and the island is now green and lush.

Looking at the stats for May:
Our10 year and 30 year rainfall average is 6.25". I recorded 8.41". /Since 1971, official records show the highest rainfall recorded in May was >16" in 2002 and lowest was 0.44" in 1983/.
High Temperature was 91°F and low 71° F Average 81°F

Current Conditions at 9:30pm
Clear Skies
Winds South at 3-5 knots
Temperature 83°F Heat Index 90°F
Humidity 78%
Barometer 29.96"

Have a great evening.

William

- 2007 Hurricane Season
  • From: helen chawe <helenchawe at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Fri, 1 Jun 2007 05:11:22 -0700 (PDT)
Good Morning Everyone

Well its that time of year again where our nerves will be tested again.  Lets hope that this year will be good to us.
From the past we all know to be prepared, get those batteries, dry and tinned food and most of all have a "Hurricane Plan" with friends and neighbours.  When a storm is approaching it will be too late.  Make sure you know what you will do in event of a storm heading towards us.  Make sure that your animals are taken care of and secure your house too.
I hope, as I'm sure the rest of you feel the same, lets have a quiet season.

Chat again soon,
Helen

- RAIN
  • From: William Mc Taggart <wmctagga at candw.ky>
  • Date: Thu, 31 May 2007 13:51:38 -0500
Rain is the order of the day. So far 1.3" have fallen in my area, with more expected.
Total annual rainfall 10.77"
Temperature is a cool 77° with humidity of 91%.
Barometer 29.90". Winds are light from the South, with higher gusts in the squalls. Rainfall has fallen almost everyday sine May 14. ,

The cloudiness and showers that are affecting the island is a result of the disturbance in the Western Caribbean near the Yucatan. The National Weather Service has issued a Special Tropical Disturbance Statement. http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIADSAAT+shtml/311549.shtml?

Government agencies here have been running their annual hurricane preparedness exercise this week.
Enjoy your day.

William

This is what happens when one goes to bed at 7 at night... wide awake and it's 2 am....hope I get back to sleep, anyway. Wind started to blow this after noon nice to work outside yesterday was really hot no breeze at all. Summer is here no doubt about that. Seas are smooth all though with the wind this afternoon I'm sure things are a bit bumpy off shore. The boat is almost ready for the water....must repair the trailer then things should be ready. I'm hoping to be fishing in the next week or two. Have to try to get back to sleep..... Later

- More Rain

As I write this I can hear the rain on the window, makes me sleepy. There is a big patch of showers extending most of the Caribbean and drifting west.
We've had rain for almost a week on and off and one can almost watch the green start coming back. Time to check the oil in the lawn mower as well as the generator. The lawn is bound to start growing with the rain.
There are engines being put back on the fishing boat this week, not all the parts were shipped..... not surprised. Hopefully I'll be able to post some pictures again soon.

Finally some rain. We have had as much rain the the past 3 days in my area, as we have had for the first 4 months of this year :-) . Other areas of the island have had rain too. Monday we experienced a cloud burst in the Airport /George Town area that dumped 1.66" of rain. I sat in my truck for 40 minutes waiting for it hold up enough so I could get inside. It was stunning to see the amount of flying termites take to the skies as they sought shelter. Most made a beeline straight for my house :'( . Then they shed their wings and get down to business. It happens every year we have the first heavy downpour. Rain has been threatening all day and finally a good heavy rainfall has just ended with.93" to show so far. Sky is cloudy/overcast in all quadrants. Hopefully it will rain some more tonight. Ahhhh rain falling on a metal roof makes for a sweet sleep.

The plants welcome the rainfall. You can almost watch their leaves turn green. After a good washing by the rain, gutters/downspouts are turned back into the cistern. Our Mosquito Control Unit were out in the airplane earlier in the month spreading the bio-friendly pellets in the wetlands. This method of mosquito control has proven to be effective in dealing with these pests. Sure beats the chemical sprays.

Current conditions: Wet!!

Cloudy/Overcast
Winds: East at 3 Knots
Temperature: 77°F
Humidity: 90%
Pressure: 29.85 in
Daily Rainfall: .93" Monthly Rainfall: 2.79

Rainfall deficit to date for 2007: Approximately 6" based on 10 year average.

Dearmissmermaid, I hope you will soon feel better.

Have a Great evening.

William

Rain finally. It's been a few good months with no rain. West Bay got a good soaking yesterday, but as "tings" go it didn't rain any where else. Or should I say it didn't rain at the skate park. Time to start checking you supplies.

Cloudy conditions today in Grand Cayman with a few light showers around for which we are thankful for. Nothing significant, but at least it keeps down the dust. We are getting into the Rainy season now. Our monthly average rainfall for May is 6". Last year May, only 2" fell. Looking back to May 2002 16" fell.

Current Conditions:

Partly Cloudy with light rain showers.
Winds NE to E at 5-10 Knots
Temperature 82° Humidity 80% Heat Index 90°
Barometer 29.90 inches
Rainfall .14"

For those coming to visit the islands.....the weather is usually great.

Have a Great Day
