7.30 pm and I have just looked at the satellite pictures.  A very large blob appears to be coming our way from Cuba.  Eeek!   Raingauge out, dogs and washing in I think.

I should keep your rain gauge ready William.  On Wednesday night we had 4.3 inches of rain and the roads were like rivers.  Now I see we have a new "blob" and the sky is looking very dark, some of which could head for Puerto Rico.  At least it rains at night and we have hot and sunny days to enjoy life.

March has been a wet month for us with the monthly rainfall total being 17.05 inches - which means we have had 39 inches since January 1st.  Luckily most of this seems to fall at night leaving the days hot and sunny with blue skies, and the island lush and green.

Too much of a good thing is a bad thing, we prayed for rain and the good Lord heard us. The only thing is that he overdid himself.
Had rain for three days in a row, flooding of low areas, overflowing rivers caried away bridges, landslides, etc. My heart bleeds for the poor people in the backcountry. Today, it seems to be over, time to repair and clean up.

Good evening:

Want to start saying that it was a long time not being posting around, so HI EVERYBODY!! Good to see you.

From last Wednesday to this moment, we have been facing scattered showers nationwide. Flooding has affected mainly Santiago province. Last Wednesday was special to us in the capital because showers kept it strong within a considerable long time term. I got stuck in more than 1 hour traffic, came back to home very pissed off wishing never have to go outside again that day.

Currently, light rain, chilling temps. Ozama river is "inking" our coastline with water loaded with sediments.

Please the rest of you - take some rain off us!!!  Since Wednesday we have had 5.4 inches and it looks like another 3 inches in the raingauge today (I'm not going out to check).  The road is a river and even the frogs are quiet - probably drowned.  The country is on a green flood alert and people are being evacuated from low-lying areas.  But the bananas are happy and I won't need to water the garden.

We had a wonderful view of the lunar eclipse tonight.  Moonrise and the first part of the eclipse were hidden by a heavy bank of cloud.  At 7.15pm local time the moon rose above the cloud and was nearly totally obscured, glowing a dull orange.  By about 8.15pm the shadow had started to move away and by about 9pm the moon was clear.  Soft breezes, clear skies, bright stars and lots of satellites visible.

Good evening

Everyday we are facing isolated T-storm or showers, but happens that every single day, most part of Santo Domingo gets showers, it is interesting to watch, it goes like this:

It can be sunny, in early morning, until midday, then you can see storm clouds approaching from the west, then suddenly starts raining, for 10 minutes, maybe more, then it goes, sun, then more clouds approaching, rain, and so on, for example, today, we had 4 or 6 periods of shower, however, it seems like we are under several cold fronts, because afternoons are cooler, since the new year's day, even in new year's eve we had showers, some cycles as I tell above, resulting in cool afternoons and cold nights.

Cold for us is 19 ~ 22 ºC, cool would be a little higher, like 23 ~ 26 ºC.

Right now, 22ºC, with 100% humidity, dew point is 22ºC and we hit that temp already, so almost everything out there is wet, can tell because I saw my car all wet, and didn't rain after 5PM (car was dry), and it was 10PM by that moment.

Wow - what a night!  From midnight to 5.30am we had a tremendous thunderstorm accompanied by very strong winds.  The thunder shook the house and the lightning was white instead of our usual pink.  My raingauge showed 5.25 inches by this morning and from the look of the skies, there is more to come - our new oversized metal gutters earned their keep last night.  The road must have flooded as half the materials from my neighbour's building site have washed up against my gate.  Most surprising of all - we had continuous power all night long - sounds like a candidate for Ripley's "Believe it or not".

Yesterday we had a wintry day (for us), temps down to lower 70s, until the sun came out about 2 PM. The morning was grey, cold (ejem) drizzle and fairly cool wind from the north.  In the afternoon it was back to bussines......blue skies etc., hope we'll get more days like this in the next couple of months.

Planing to go for lunch in Constanza, for u who have not been there, its a valley in the mountains (yes we have mountains), about two and a half hours drive, where in our winter, temps near freezing in the mornings, not bad for a tropical island..... think I'll make it a weekend. Lovely landscapes, big area for flower and vegetables. They just opened a small hotel, idividual cottages I hear it is quite adequate. Will report after I see it.

Allow me to wish everybody a Merry Xmas and New Year.

- 2006 Hurricane season: A contrast
  • From: "Guillermo A. Serra" <gaquiles20 at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Tue, 21 Nov 2006 16:38:30 -0400
Good afternoon everybody...

I got to say that this season is so far a contrast with last year's. Particularly here in the Dominican Republic, at least in the metropolitan area, this summer was very very hot. September was a very exhausting month, with sunshine on its whole, with few "drops" of rain, not even a cloud with mercy to lend us some shadow. Not a single storm passed near us to "let rain".

And so, yesterday was wet, at last, and this morning we had few showers, but for worst, the sun started to vaporize the water and made the afternoon seasonally hot.

By Nov. 13 or so, i remember that at night was quite chilly (cool), breathing easy, I went to bed smiling to the roof, because I was frustrated with this hot summer, tired and frustrated, but December is close and with it, cooler temps.

I will not say "stay tuned" this time because there is nothing to expect this season, I declared it sooooo finished since long ago >_<

They say that you should be careful what you wish for, and last week I was bemoaning the fact that we had had very little rain for almost 5 weeks.  All that has changed as in the last 72 hours we have had 9 inches/23 cm of rain here on the North Coast - 1 inch on Wednesday night, 5 inches on Thursday in 12 hours, and another 3 inches in the last 24 hours.  That's enough for now!  Frog heaven!

At last - some welcome rain and the first since the last week in August, at least more than a sprinkle anyway.  Late afternoon the sky became black and strong gusts of wind started to thrash the bananas, but so often the weather curves to the south and misses us completely.  The heavy shower only lasted 20 minutes, but as the sky is still fairly dark to the east, perhaps the blobs on the satellite pictures will continue to rain on us overnight.  We are used to our overnight sprinkles every 3 days or so and this dry spell is most unusual.

On a non-weather related topic - baby hummingbirds have been fledging recently and the logo on our new satellite dish is a red flash.  The hummingbirds are very territorial and are attracted to red items, and one young bird has taken to guarding this red flash - chasing away other birds and waiting for the "flower" to open.  Haha!  He will have a long wait!

Buenos Dias a Todos.

Today we have overcast and a nice soft breeze from the NE, temps have gone down dramaticaly . Monday we had something happening here to break Dear Miss Mermaid's records with the power company, we had a 10 hour blackout,  usually our emergency generator comes in auto and we dont even realize the power is gone, but guess what. The starter engine of the emergency generator failed!!!!!!!!!!! soooooo, no power, no water, no TV, nothing.

Had a lot of trouble finding matches to lit the burners (they have one of those gizmos , electtric of course, to start auto) until I found some I had stolen from a restaurant. Luckily had some water stashed away for this kind of jokes and manage to make a Big Omelette for dinner, washed down with nice scotch wiskey , and half melted icecream,

Phoned one of my children (age 42) and she brought over spare batteries, kerosene for a storm lamp, and had our wachtman cllimb seven stories to deliver, guess what, as soon as we got the supplies........power came back on!  Can't win them all.

Keep the storm repellent at hand. There is something coming out of Africa that does not look good.

Here on the north coast it has been hot, hot, hot and unusually dry - I can't remember when we last had any rain worth mentioning.  The power situation is still bad and with no electricity for the water pump, the garden is looking a bit crispy around the edges.  Of course the power comes on after dark, but I don't like to water with a hosepipe in one hand and a flashlight in the other - too many creeping and slithering things underfoot, not to mention the mosquito hoardes who see me as a bedtime snack.  We have been very grateful for the breezes when the temperature passes 91f/33c as it has for the past week, beautiful skies with trade wind clouds and good sunsets too.

Good morning...

It seems like we are melting, lately these past two weeks is being extremely hot, seasonably hot, heat index reaching very high temps, you can't avoid having your face covered with sweat, and making things worst, we are avoiding turning the A/C on because of very high electricity cost in Dominican Republic, we have over a week of success, surviving hot nights without A/C. The power service in this country is a national shame, very bad service with blackouts from 1 hour to up to 13 hours in some poor areas, though bills are skyrocketing.

I am hoping for some tropical wave to pass ASAP or something that make temps cooler as we approach to fresh winter temps.

Stay tuned...

Atentamente, the melted guy.

We try to keep with our lives normally, but rains stops many commercial activities as people prefer to stay home enjoying a hot cup of coffee or cocoa.

We at the north coast of the Dominican Republic and it has been raining on and off since yesterday. So far only minor floodings here at the north and no damages. Temperatures cooled off quite a bit, which is welcome after the extreme heat in the last days.

More floodings and landslides are expected in the mountain areas and in the South.
My thoughts are going out to our neighbour Haiti, where often many lives are lost when lots of rain causes extreme floodings. So far I haven't heart any damage reports from there, but I'm afraid we will soon.

We dodged the bullet and is Jamaica's turn to face this system, as for Haiti, seems like they will dodge a closer bullet, after Jamaica, Cuba, and then the Gulf of Mexico, after that, oil prices, as always, big headache huh¿?

I want to mention that yesterday around 2PM we had very loud thunders fiesta, with lighting striking around the city, my dad's flight was scheduled to land at 2:30PM from Panamá City and got here in time, I asked him how was the approach, he just said too much clouds and turbulence as they were descending...

It looks as if Chris is passing north of Hispanola but this afternoon, after a nice sunny day, we, in Bani, about sixty-five kilometres southwest of Santo Domingo, had a real storm for about two hours.  There was heavy rain and the streets looked like rivers, but that is normal for a heavy rain.  However, what was not normal was all the thunder and lightning, some of it was quite close.  Our dogs didn't know what to do with themselves.  I found out later that one of those close lightning strikes hit the cross on the top of our church, Santa Cruz, broke it, and the watchman said he could see the light as it went into the ground.

I think the reported Santo Domingo weather were a patch of local thunderstorms moving west. Between those and the TS center to the NE of Samaná lies the Dominican landmass where seems to be little cloud coverage yet.
We expect the outer clouds of CHRIS sometime later in the night and moderate

Good evening!

Surprising how weather changes over here, this morning until 4pm i think so, was sunny, hot, and so sudden, rings of clouds passed by, very loaded with humid, the clouds formed a very low ceiling, aircrafts also were taken by surprise as non of them flight when the weather gets this bad (I am talking about La Isabela Intl Airport at the north of the National District, I could see them maneuvering between the clouds, and then the big splash! I was about to go to the supermarket with my aunt and the heavy rain caught us in the middle of the traffic, wow, the visibility went very low as the big splash continued, and it extended for an hour or two.

As for the metropolitan area, this is all I got to report, later on the news will pop up with new information regarding the storm passing north of us.

  • From: Chris Hafner-Eaton <dr.hafner-eaton at centurytel.net>

Well, I don't know what to say about "Chris." The storm officially DID reach hurricane status last night. It looked like it was dissolving by mid day today HOWEVER...here's what happened at least on our part of the Dominican South Shore.

We thought Juan Dolio (the S. Shore of the DR was in the clear but apparently not). Right now (2:44 EDT) we are getting hammered with pounding rain and lightening strikes everywhere at frequencies I've never seen. None of the satellite images I have pulled up show what it is. We were at Playa Carribe beach and all was calm and sunny. The waves even sucked. Then these fingers of what looked hurricane-like to me started moving in and I pointed out the ridges to the other surfers. Then the waves picked up and no one payed attention. It soon started raining so I brought the stuff back to the car and went back to catch more waves. THEN the pounding started...didn't see lightening at first but about a half an hour later we started seeing strikes about 5 miles away. Eventually Tristen got scared and I said "One more wave." We headed for the car right as the lightening started doing what felt like bombing. At the car a deluge of rain and more lightening. Driving through Guyacanes, Los Canucos and Juan Dolio lead to hydroplaning which my 11 year old calls "Car Surfing." As we drove into the street where our house is I SAW lightening hit the ground and water came shooting up (very cool after the initial shock). Apparently the construction crew building next to us hadn't buried the water main. Now they have to replace it.

As I was in the shower, it was like a strobe light with my eyes closed and we have opaque windows that don't open. Now sheets of rain are coming in and there is water rising up under all the bedroom doors.
Stay Safe,

Good afternoon:

Yesterday around 2 PM (-4:00 GMT) we had electrical storm and quite lot of showers, it quickly flooded some areas of the city. Severe lighting made me turn off some electric devices such as PC and TV, power outage during the storm. Showers extended for few hours but heavy enough to badly flood some areas.

Stay tuned for next wave...

Yesterday we had a strong wave going trough our country, lots of rain, and electric activity, some areas of the city flooded but luckily no mayor damage. Had our parking lot with 10 inches of water, but drained quite fast.
This mornig, sun's out, blue skies. Waiting for the next wave in a couple of days....

Wonderful sky tonight with a ring around a big moon, clouds moving fast east to west.  A slight sprinkling of rain and the surf sounds big and noisy from about 700 metres away.

Good afternoon...

This weekend that just passed was very wet, specially Sunday, I was about to hit the road from National District to Juan Dolio Beach areas (a bit further from Las Américas Intl. Airport), and we were shopping comestibles before departing at a supermarket, and it was about 3:08 PM, when the clouds turned gray (just when we thought that we were going to have a sunny Sunday, after quite wet Friday and Saturday), well, cats and dogs began to fall, this highway is very dangerous when is raining, it goes thru all the coast line, and we were going to a pool house in that beautiful beach and hotels area...

Rain, rain and more rain, until like 9 PM, when we hit the road again back to National District, we could see, and all incoming traffic to the city, the awesome lighting show, striking not so far from the vicinity, but it was tremendous.

Yesterday was sunny whole day, at AM hours started to rain, then sun, and right now, getting cloudy.

Not much to tell, this is the Caribbean, and it will be like that until hurricane season is over.

Stay tuned...

- lots of little earthquakes

Lots of little earthquakes here in the Sosua area in the last few days.  3.5 on Friday night, 3.8 on Saturday morning and a nice little shiver at 9.34 this morning that set things a jingling, accompanied by a low rumbling and seemed to go west to east judging by what had fallen over.  No damage and pretty ripples in the pool - all these small slips will hopefully keep the faults lightly stressed.  That apart, the kiteboarding championships in Cabarete have finished and the good winds continue with deep blue skies and fluffy white clouds.  Out back I can hear a mockingbird swearing at a hawk high up in the tree - must be a small one because he is getting pretty brave with his abuse.

The Dominican Republic is right up there with the BVI and USVI when it comes to power outages - they can last for up to 10 hours a day although 4 hours is more usual.  All praise to the person who invented invertors!!! without which we would be in the dark much more as generators are great but so noisy and expensive to run.  Beautiful sunny day here on the north coast with a good cooling breeze.  The kiteboarding world cup starts in Cabarete today   http://www.pkra.info/EVENTS/cabarete/  so they will be glad of the stiff breeze.

The rain finally reached the coastal strip on the north coast yesterday afternoon, and deposited 3.5 inches in 1 hour.  At 4pm the sky turned dark and the rain was so heavy that we lost our satellite connection for a couple of hours.  We still have a blanket of high cloud hiding the sun, and there is a cool and fresh-washed feeling today.

Overnight there has been a great deal of rain and flooding over the mountains in Santiago, and two horsemen were killed by lightning in Villa Rivas.  There is a green alert in place in 18 provinces with the expectation of more heavy rain (10-30mm expected in places) and high winds, and the danger of rivers overflowing their banks.

Here on the coastal side of the mountains we could see the black clouds and the lightning, but only had a light shower.  At the moment we have a blanket of very high cloud filtering the sunshine.

The south coast has been having a lot of rain and more is forecast, but here on the north coast we are still pretty dry which is unusual for us.  We had localised thunderstorms yesterday and today, but the amount of rain deposited was minimal.  The white egrets have been coming down to bathe on the step of the swimming pool which I have never seen before - must be because their normal pools have dried up.  The thunder is rumbling around and the lightning is pink as can be, but very little rain.

- Heavy rain going, heavy rain coming

Good evening:

Tropical waves are punishing the country.

Currently (as right now): thick black clouds, winds calm, no thunders or lighting.

Yesterday night, dangerous lighting, thunders, windy.

I was talking on the phone with a friend who lives near coast line, I could heard a noisy thunder on the phone, and few secs later i heard it myself on the surrounding in a low tone (sound takes more time to travel), he thinks a lighting hit nearby areas, his power got knocked off.

Local authorities warned people living near "arroyos y cañadas" (a translator program translate as streams and gorges, not sure if that is the correct meaning) before sudden floods.

If you live outside and you are wondering how does it feels being under this kind of tropical wave, well, is fun, you see thick clouds approaching, like a cold front, and very possible that so sudden the wind start to pick up, like if the approaching rain wants the terrain clean, and the you can't see far, you see like a fog, but that is the rain approaching, and then this really big heavy downpour... and then, calm. And so the wave go, another one comes.

Stay tuned...

- Flood alert
  • From: carol read <carolread1945 at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Wed, 14 Jun 2006 23:11:15 +0100 (BST)
The National Meteorological Office (ONM) has issued a warning for the eastern, northeastern and southeastern parts of the Dominican Republic to be on the watch for flooding. The warning is the result of the tropical wave that is passing over the island and bringing heavy rains. The ONM is advising persons living in low-lying areas to take precautions. Strong winds and rains as well as electrical discharges are expected.

It has been so dry recently that a little rain (not all in one downpour please) will be very welcome as the palms have brown fronds and the grass is looking very dry.  Very unusual for the north coast where we usually have an evening shower every few nights.

Well, we have had no rain yet over the north coast, but the low over Cuba is looking more threatening and could develop into something else.  It would be nice to have some reports from Jamaica or even Cuba where they must be feeling the effects of this system.  Best wishes from us all for a safe season which is looking threatening already.

Good morning...

The National Meteorology Office issued yesterday warnings to up to 18 provinces including National District and vicinity for the nearly stationary system located between Cuba and Haiti as you can see right now on satellite pictures.

The Yaque del Norte river (longest river on island, about 200 km) river has incremented its volume and could menace near residents.

Meanwhile, skies over National District is nearly over casted, yesterday the sky varied its condition thru all day, with rain and sun periods.

- Weather warning
  • From: carol read <carolread1945 at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Wed, 7 Jun 2006 00:59:34 +0100 (BST)
This was reported in Dominican Today - 6th June 2006.  It has been overcast and threatening rain or thunderstorms for a few days now.

SANTO DOMINGO. - The National Meteorology Office and the National Emergencies Committee (COE) yesterday issued alerts to the population, especially those residing in vulnerable places, on the possibilities of floods and landslides.
The warning stems from a stationary low front located between Haiti and Cuba, expected to bring rains during next 48 to 72 hours in different parts of the Dominican territory.
Both organizations asked the citizens to follow the guidelines from the assistance agencies and to be alert to the bulletins to avoid tragedies.
Meteorology announced that the low is over the Windward Passage, causing cloudiness and heavy showers over a large part of the country with the greatest intensity in the Northwest, Southwest and the Cibao Central Valley regions.
"We maintain a warning for the high risks zones of the National District, Santo Domingo Province  , San Cristóbal, Azua, Baní, Barahona, Santiago Rodriguez, Dajabón, Bonao, Salcedo and La Vega," said Martin Mata, of Meteorology, when alerting on possible overflowing of the river banks.
A COE bulletin ordered the regional and provincial Civil Defense directors to activate their contingency plans and among the places where preventive measures need to be taken are, Santiago, Espaillat, Barahona, San Francisco, Monsignor Nouel, Hato Mayor, San Cristóbal, National District, Dajabón, Baní, Mao, El Seibo, Miches, Nagua, Azua and Santiago Rodriguez.

Good morning...

I woke up this morning around 6:30 AM and noticed the sky heavily thick ready to release some welcome raining. I like rainy days specially morning but just if i stay at home, I don't like driving when it is raining because transit goes mad.

Though it is expected to continue our wet days, this means high humid, heat sensation might be unbearable.

Not any tropical system threatening the Dominican Republic, yet.

Good morning!

Today starts Atlantic Hurricane season, with 9 hurricanes expected to form, 4 or 5 majors. Weather here has been a little bit wet and very wet, depends on the region of the island.

Santiago and surrounding provinces, up to the north of the island there have been torrential rains, enough to flood houses and streets. Down, to the south, over National District (where i live), just smooth rain, enough to cool down a bit temps (around 31°).

To finish this post, i will leave you with this picture, taken by a lady living in a residential tower near the malecón (coastal avenue), it is a small and weak tornado, we are not used to it, but according to National Weather Offcie, all conditions are here for these phenomens, just that are a little bit weird, it is more common on northern part of the island and they usually affects plantations.

  • From: carol read <carolread1945 at yahoo.com>

It has suddenly turned very hot which doesn't bode well for the summer - the swimming pool is up to 92f and the sea is very warm too - I will take the pool thermometer down with me next time to check.  In Santiago yesterday it was near the 95f that they had at the Haitian border.  Very hot for May as we usually get these temperatures in July.  The garden is full of birds - the flycatchers have just fledged and flown away, and we have hummingbirds, king birds, mocking birds, woodpeckers, palm chats, banana quits and mannikins,  apart from all the birds of prey.  If the sea is hot we may get an early hurricane season!!

After nearly a month without rain, the front has finally come through from the west followed by thunderstorms.  It poured nearly 1.75 inches in 2 hours and the temperature dropped from 91f/33c to 78f/26c - very welcome as it has been hot! hot! hot! with a hot strong wind these last few days.  So all the thirsty islands to the east of us, hold on because it's coming your way.

- Quite timing!

Good afternoon!

I was checking the stormcarib site, I've been away for long, but nothing interesting to report.

My first post and the very first for Dominican Rep's section is about the NOAA report and hurricane list for last season, it says "Here we go again". Well, this season CAN'T be more intense than last one, because, LAST SEASON WAS QUITE IMPRESSIVE, record after record, each one broken, but you never know.

Why quite timing? well, that post was on May 16, we had few wet days, and just like now, since May 15-16 or so, we are having wet days, so... here we go again! xD

Is good to be back, I'm sorry for the sad news I found on one of the members of the site.

I won't report much this season because I am more busy than past seasons, since I am finishing my career and promotions on my job, I am planning to start doing something more of my career (constructions, managing, material quality, etc).

If I am not wrong, this will be my 4th season here, as a local reporter, I found this site searching for hurricane topics and a web search engine brought me here, good I found virtual place because is great and keeps me in touch with my other partners in the islands of the Caribbean.

That's all for now.

Stay tuned...

The weather here is gorgeous with rain at night and hot sunny days.  A big thunderstorm on Wednesday night dropped 3 inches of rain but by the next morning it had all dried up and everywhere was green and sparkling.  I was down on the south coast last week and it was a different story - very brown and dessicated, but that's why we have tropical rainforest and they have cactus.  What a wonderful varied island this is.
