  • From: "Greg Wojciechowski" <gwojo at bsx.com>
  • Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2007 15:25:50 -0400
Good afternoon,

The schools have closed at 12:00, Ferry Service has been cancelled, the
causeway linking the west to the east end of the Island has closed at 1:30
as the winds howl.

Businesses are still open as are the banks and the Bermuda Stock Exchange.

For all of us, we are settling in for a winter blow--par for the course in
the Mid-Atlantic and Bermuda takes this type of storm in stride, I wonder if
I will still be saying that after my ride home tonight on my moped!!!! The
following are the latest observations and forecasts for your information

Have a great weekend!

GW

Marine Synopsis -
Storm force winds and gusts to hurricane force are now affecting the area.
Winds will slowly ease below storm force this evening and below gale force
early Saturday morning.
Today -
Winds westerly 45 to 55 knots, with occasional gusts to 70 knots in
showers.... Scattered showers with fair to poor visibility, slight chance
of thunder and hail, showers easing later.... Seas increasing, inside the
reef 3 to 5 ft... Outside the reef 20 to 25 ft... Sunrise: 7:17 am.

35 knots overnight... Isolated showers with fair visibility... Seas inside

I trust that you all had a great holiday season and best wishes for 2007. I
thought I would share today's Bermuda forecast with you. Seems like this
should be a mid-August forecast but there you go.

You never know what will develop out here in the middle of the Atlantic!!!

today - Winds westerly 35 to 45 knots, with occasional gusts to 65 knots in
showers, increasing west-northwesterly 40 to 50 knots with gusts to 70 knots
at times... Scattered heavy showers with fair to poor visibility, slight
chance of thunder and hail, showers easing later. Occasional gusts to 70
knots in squally showers... Seas increasing, inside the reef 3 to 5 ft...
Outside the reef 20 to 25 ft... Sunrise: 7:17 am.

Tonight - Winds west-northwesterly 40 to 50 knots gusts to 70 knots, easing
30 to 35 knots overnight... Isolated showers... Seas inside the reef 3 to 5
ft... Outside the reef 20 to 25 ft... Sunset: 5:47 pm.

Should be a howling cold night here in Bermuda.

Have a great weekend!

Greg

Well greetings to all
After holding my breath for a peaceful season I can now exhale. Thank God this season was relatively minor in comparison to other years. Here's hoping this is a trend for a while. I have lived on this website all season and greatly appreciated all the correspondence keeping us in the loop and all the support from worldwide friends who read the site.

Here in Bermuda the weather is very pleasant .. low to mid 70's and low humidity. Nights are even cool suitable to wear a light jacket or throw  a blanket on the bed.

Happy 40th Independance Day to all our Bajan friends.

Wishing you all a safe Christmas Season and blessed New Year...
signing out for now
Marion

Good afternoon all
Just a quick hello. Our temperatrues dropped to 68 yesterday. The wind is blowing from the north and the sea looks dark with lots of white caps. It would have been nice except I left home in linen sleevless shirt and linen pants. Needless to say I was very cold. The children took  out blankets and all the windows were closed for the night. Today is still cool but the sun is peeking out from time to time. Lets hope it not set in as its too early to bring out the Winter wardrobe. The weather service says day temps will go back up towards the weekend but I saw 62' as a possible evening temperature BBBBBBBRRRRRRRR.
Its been a nice peaceful season..lets hope the next 4 weeks are just as pleasant .

Greetings All,

Although all the Bermuda correspondents enjoy posting and keeping in contact
with everyone--its doesn't seem quite fair that we should be doing it again
so soon due to a storm!!!

Well Helene certainly has exploded in strength over the last 24 hours. As
with Flo, the forecasters and their forecasts seems to be a bit divergent,
with Bermuda in the balance--that said--we are watching, and are more or
less still prepared (some houses are still boarded). Of course we hope that
she sails right by to our east!

Its beautiful today in Bermuda, bright and sunny. The trees still look a
bit licked and we could use a good rain shower to wash the residual salt
away--but we don't want it from Helene's rain bands!!!

All the best,

Greg

Good Evening
Just thought I'd update things locally all is well. Bermuda weathered the storm very well. Other than some tree debris and a couple of roofs damaged things seems pretty ok. At news time , 7p.m ,there were no storm related injuries reported, so we seem  to have escaped. The power and phone company have been very quick to get us back to normal. Many thanks to  them. Public schools will be closed tomorrow as we have to go in an assess  the facilities. All governemnt offices are open tomorrow and for the most part it looks like business as usual . The bus , ferries and airport will reopen tomorrow.
I went to check on my house and my mothers all is well.

Beach erosion was apparently not too bad either .. will believe that when I see it .

So many thanks for all  the emails,  prayers and good wishes. Oh looks like we might have Gordon dropping nearby by... lets hope he goes East a long way away.
till  next time

Good evening!

We finally have power back. We were out since 6am.

All is well in our neighbourhood, I have attached a few picture for you to see. All were taken this morning. As others have mentioned there is debris, mostly fallen branches all over the place, nothing major around here. I have just returned from a walk as the weather is quite pleasant right now. The sun is out and there is a nice breeze keeping it cool. There are lots of people out and about.
Cheers
Susan

- Getting Brighter in Bermuda--G'bye Flo
  • From: "Greg Wojciechowski" <gwojo at ibl.bm>
  • Date: Mon, 11 Sep 2006 16:29:54 -0300
Good afternoon All,

It is getting brighter in Bermuda now--Flo is to our north. We have be very
lucky with this storm. There are reports of some damage (lifted garage
roof, tornadoes destroying roofs) but not what it could have been. Power is
back on in our Parish as I mentioned earlier (well done to BELCO) and I have
every confidence that by tomorrow things will be almost back to normal.

It is still gusty but the winds are easing.

All in all, we are breathing a sight of relief and I believe that all of the
preparations have paid off--I will send some photos and post Flo information
as I get it.

Again thanks for all of your support throughout the storm! Hopefully TD 7
just skirts righ by (far to our east)

Still very windy, still raining - lashing down actually. This one has lasted a while.

Our power is still up which is great. We have seen some BTC trucks drving down the road, so those phone guys are on the job ! We have also seen some bikers and must say - are you crazy?

One boat has managed to beach itself on the neighbors beach, nothing on ours yet, but the moorings in the harbour have moved around and two boats are riding the storm out beside each other now, I am sure their owners will be thrilled about that :)

Here's a few photos to show the change in the ocean around here, and you can see the tides are high on the docks, and its not even high tide right now.

Hi. Power here in my part of St. George's went down a couple of hours ago.  The wind just shifted from the south east to s/sw, so Flo seems to be passing.  Some strong gusts and I had to tie down another shutter that does not fit.  The worst may be over.

Well its blowing here in Somerset and Elys Harbour - have a look - lots of white and the water is being blown right over the top. All the boats in the harbour look fine. One has lost its cover, but that happens alot to that boat in particular.

We still have power at our house, but I don't know about others.

Lots of tree branchs down, the tree at the side of our house has lost just about all its branchs, but they all missed the roof, so we are lucky and thankful for that.

At least it is light out now, it feels less intimitating and scary when you can actually see what is going on. It is certainly blowing alot out here, but no rain at the moment, just so much wind you almost feel it whipping past, even when you are inside. I guess its the sound associating with the feeling.

Our satelitte is still working with Canadian feeds, and the news banners did say that Flo was barreling towards Bermuda - but I think they got it wrong, she is already here !! :)

Hope everyone is holding out well.
Trish

Presently here near Hamilton its very windy and the rains have been constant for past hour. Cable TV is not working here but thank goodness for DVDs and portable laptops.
I understand power is out in Somerset and Warwick having spoken to a couple of friends down there. Haven't heard about South shore but I am sure its  wild! Worst part of Florence is due about 10 a.m. our time...
thanks for all the prayers and messages .. they really help..

Good Morning,
What a difference here in Somerset this morning. I fell asleep to crickets and frogs in the back of the house and woke to severe winds howling through the Harbour. The trees are blowing around like crazy, but we have yet to lose one.

The harbour looks like its taking a beating, but its not light enough to see if there are missing boats, will have to check later.

Out the window I can see lightening brightening up the sky, but it appears over Southhampton, not directly over us. Its really blowing and we are now retreated to the back room, luckily its a bedroom, where the winds are not as strong as on the exposed front.

Still power here as I can see lights on the Southhampton horizon and around us.

Will try to get some more rest, and see what the sunrise will bring - if those winds let it come.

Sunset: 7:32 pm.
Monday -
Winds south-southeasterly 60 to 70 knots gusting 80 knots, veering
southwesterly 35 to 50 knots by afternoon, westerly 20 to 30 knots

Appears we have been granted somewhat of a reprieve--Flo's CPA is now around
70 miles to the west of this this am--that will make a big difference as can

Something smashed outside at 3:30 and I haven't been able to get to sleep since - that freight train roar has begun.

After an hour wondering around the house with a torch, I wondered why I hadn't turned on the lights.  Power is still on. Go Belco!  I must feel pride as my Dad drafted the emergency plan for Belco after hurricane Emily.  Go Dad!

As to conditions, it's noisy, wet and the trees are bending.  Can't see further than my garden because my windows are closed.  Carol Marshall (trouper!) is still broadcasting on the radio station, Mix 106, although I have to question the music choice ;-)   There is a very distressed lizard clinging to the outside of one of my windows. Maybe I'll try to let him in.

Reports of two tornadoes  the one mentioned earlier in Devonshire, and another in Southampton.

- Elys Harbour meets Flo
  • From: "Tricia McAllister" <tricia_mcallister06 at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Mon, 11 Sep 2006 01:18:44 -0300
Its early morning here in Bermuda, or late night for some.

Here on the North Shore the wind has picked up and is definately strong however the trees do not look like they are ready to blow over. I suspect this may change as morning comes.

Elys harbour is still basically flat with the wind blowing accross the surface of the water, and the tides are high. Its dark, but there is a bit of light out there and none of the boats look to be moving violently around, just being pulled on their moorings.

Saying that, the rain is now pounding on the shutters, so its picking up a bit.

Be Safe and we'll see how things look in the am - sleep well Bermuda, as morning will come early.

It has gotten really humid over the last 3 or so hours, Flo is approaching

I am going to say good night and will touch base in the morning.

Subject: Bermuda - Flo

Good Morning,
Found your site this weekend, and how great !! Saw a lot of the same thing
we were saying about Bermuda and Flo being posted.

The pictures are of the north shore and Ely's Harbour, where we stand watch.
This morning is not really worrisome yet - up here in the de north end,
its slightly breezy, very little water movement so far, but humid.
Overnight we had not even a half inch of rain accumulate in the bucket
outside.

Every once and while a firm breeze runs through.

Most boaters secure there boats in this harbour, but don't pull them out of
the water, as it is considered a protected harbour on the north shore, at
least as protected as you can get, so I can always send some photos of
during and after if you like. We are right on the water, up high and the
down again so protected a bit from the wind. We are waiting patiently to
see how we make out, as this is our first hurricane in this home, but by far
not our first on the Island. We are dreaming of one of those near misses of
nothing, but sometimes dreams don't come true.

Thanks and we will be watching and can send info while we are up and running
if you like.

Regards and Best wishes
Tricia McAllister and family

I'm looking out of my one remaining unshuttered window, watching the Causeway linking St. George's to the rest of the Island.  The Causeway has been shut for an hour and a half, and I can see police lights and another warning light flashing to alert people to go no further.  I can just make out the same thing over the other side at the bottom of Blue Hole Hill.  A few cars are driving along by the airport, but they return soon after because they are turned back. I hope they have a good reason for trying to get across. During Fabian, my family all decamped for the mainland (Smith's) as we were not convinced that the building we were in would stand up to a Cat 4.  It did, and I regretted moving.  This time, we are in a different part of the building and I am happy to be here in St. George's.

I took a sort walk over to the north shore at sunset (I was in my PJs - sorry to those people I met on the way).  As you would expect, it's fairly calm over there in the leeward side.  I hope to take some "after" pics to post tomorrow if I can get out there.

As for the SW side, the boats left in are spinning on their moorings, winds are brisk and my little hill is getting slightly battered.  I did see some stars outside a moment ago, so there are clear patches.

More later - or in the a.m.

Good Evening All--

Just made my last rounds and we are ready. The streets are very quiet (as
they should be) and eveyone is now bunkered down and ready for Flo's early
morning arrival. We have been told to prepare for a Cat 2 storm that will
be at its closest point of approach at 8:00 tomorrow morning. Here's the
blurb from our local weather service:

Tonight -
 Winds east-southeasterly 35 to 50 knots, increasing southeasterly 50 to 60
knots... Widespread rain, showers, scattered Tstorms, possible tornadoes.
SW swell, storm surge affecting all coastal areas, destructive wave action
especially on south shore... Seas increasing, inside the reef 3 to 6 ft...
Outside the reef 15 to 25 ft... Sunset: 7:32 pm.
Monday -
Winds southeasterly 75 to 85 knots, with higher 100 knots gusts, becoming
southerly mid morning then southwesterly in afternoon. decreasing westerly
40 to 50 knots by evening & northwesterly 25 to 35 knots overnight...
Widespread rain, showers, scattered Tstorms, possible tornadoes. SW swell,
storm surge affecting all coastal areas, destructive wave action especially
on south shore. Swell becoming W by evening... Seas increasing, inside the
reef 5 to 7 ft... Outside the reef 30 to 40 ft... Sunrise: 7:00 am; Sunset:
7:30 pm.

( 30-40 feet!!!!!!)

At present its quiet outside--a sprinkle now and then and patchy gusts--We
know this is not indicative of what is to come over the next 12 hours!!

Attached are the last photos prior to sundown--the first is the usual John
Smith Bay location (I hope I can get there tomorrow) and the other is the
very lovely village of Flatts looking toward the Bermuda Aquarium and the
inlet into Harrngton Sound.

Not much more to report--Have a great evening all. Bermuda is ready for
Flo. As its dark, it will be hard to give further reports--but if things
get saucey and I can provide information later this evening I
will--otherwise--power and comms permitting I will write more tomorrow.

As is to be expected somethings are not as we hear them. 7 o'clock news said BELCO will not be closing but will deal with outages as soon as it is safe for crews to do so. My apologies for the misinformation.. sounded sensible at the time
The weather station has told us we will be in the strongest winds and to be wary of tornadoes  after the fact. So ....
its still quiet here wind wise and aI think a few young birds who can't stop chirping are still doing so.. like the kids they areexctied and going a bit stir crazy from the wind.  My 4 yr old was outside doing martial arts in the breeze during a brief sunny spot a couple of hours ago. At the moment she is still excited.
I am not looking forward to tonight ,tomorrow or the aftermath.. I pray everyone is safe and we have no fatalities.

Good afternoon All--

Well Flo is a funny one--I was just over at John Smiths Bay Beach and the
sun poked through!!! That said as you will see from the attached photos
there is a storm clearly approaching and we are just in the middle of a
break in the action, check the photo of the waves breaking on the south
shore reef 200 or so yards off the beach. The rain has stopped for the
moment. The NHC satellite clearly shows the spot we are in at present and
what's in store!

 http://members.northrock.bm/~ehetzel/weather/

Have a look at the above for weather observations from Hinson's
Island--Thanks Eric!

As my co-correspondent mentioned earlier--the electric company will be
taking power down this evening--so fill your bathtubs with fresh
water---make some blcoks of ice and take a hot hot shower while you can!!!

Will touch base in a few hours!

All the best and thanks again for all of your emails and kind thoughts and
wishes--it's great to know that we are not out here on our own!!!

About an hour ago our power in Somerset went out. Belco, our power company, promised it would be fixed shortly and I am glad to say they delivered. Thank you!

I must admit I panicked, just a little bit, as I had not yet filled my bath tub with water. I am doing that right now.

The rain has stopped for now and the wind has diminished slightly at our end. my husband and i went to check our beach and it is still quite calm. will post pictures shortly.

I am nestled between two hotels and glad to report that they have cleared the beaches of all furniture and parasols. ps they had power while we were out, I know where to go if I am REALLY hungry and don't feel like cooking on the camp stove.

till next time

Cheers

I was recently informed that  the power company BELCO will be switching off power across the island as of midnight tonight unless the storm  winds get stronger sooner. This is in an attempt to prevent fires and power overloads. Those with generators might still be able to get online. So if we get quiet ..ie no news its cause we have no power.
Presently we are having a quiet patch  nr HAMILTON. Just wind no rain.

I totally concur with Greg - Flo is a totally different storm! This is going to be a long one.

I just popped out to look at the view over the airport - having boarded up my window I have to go outside to get the best view - and through the distant haze I can see breakers crashing over the road which leads to Clearwater beach.  This road is right at the end of the runway, so when the surge gets a little stronger, the waves will crash right onto the runway.

A few people are still out on the roads, despite the winds picking up.  My friend Joann went to get her facial - nothing stands in the way of beauty:-) I think the Causeway (road that connects St. George's to the rest of BDA) is still open, although I can't see anyone on it now.

The kids have begun a marathon movie session, beginning with The Fellowship of the Rings - alright!

Wind, rain, thunder, lightning, but nothing else to report from down east.

Good afternoon All,

Great map Susan, thanks for that--it really helps everyone visualize the
shape of the Island, we are just short of 2 miles wide at our widest point.
Luckily Bermuda is very hilly so we are fortunate in respect of storm surge,
though low lying areas are at risk. The photos I am posting are being taken
from the South shore. If you look at Susan's map and find Flatts Village (I
live nearby) then look across the Island to the south--that is where John
Smiths Bay is located.

Its 1:26 now and it is getting nasty out. Flo is very different from other
systems we have had which have arrived blew and then were gone. Flo is
dropping alot of rain already, (even in Devonshire as my mate Chris has
informed me!!!). The roads are getting flooded in places and there is
thunder and lightening. This is all 24 hours before the hurricane impacts
us--I think we are in for a long day, night and Monday!

Again, here are several photos taken from John Smiths Bay looking east--I am
trying to stay in the same position so you all have a point of reference.
The conditions on the South Shore are getting very sloppy and the wind is
increasing.

It's around 80 degrees at present 96% humidity and the winds are gusting to
27 knots from the east.

Will touch base over the next few hours!

Its almost 1 pm and the outeredges of florence's large skirts are just arriving in the middle of Bermuda. I am now at my fathers house which is 90 seconds from Hamilton. The skies are thick with heavy grey clouds and the rain is falling.. its not intense yet but it is falling at a 45 ' angle to the ground. Thunder is rolling around too and I have seen the odd bit of lightening. So the fun begins.
For those of you reading who talk to me on yahoo my dad has dial up and I am on his machine right now so if you can't find me there use your hotmail I 've down loaded that one. After this storm I have to drag him into this century technoloigcally. BTW he has found things to nail up and pack away  up till now and we thought he was done yesterday ..so he's out getting soaking wet.

STRENGTHENING IS THEREFORE FORECAST AND FLORENCE COULD
BE A STRONG CATEGORY 2 HURRICANE WHEN IT IS NEAR BERMUDA.

The latest fix puts Flo at 52 miles from Bermuda at 10:00 am tomorrow
morning. Generally this adjustment would make us breath a little
easier--but Flo is huge and seems to be strengthening now--so

Over the last hour things have changed again. It's dark and we have had
thunder and lightning. The winds have picked up.

I will pop out to snap a few more photos to share.

Good Morning--

Well what a difference a few hours make. Things have changed significantly
since I last wrote. First--Flo is no longer a lady in waiting and has
become what forecasters have been predicting, a hurricane. As a result
Bermuda is now under a hurricane warning.

As NHC reports conditions in Bermuda are definately on the decline even tho
Flo is still a couple of humdred miles to our South. Although Flo is
expected to pass 40 miles to our west, it will be more or less a direct hit
for us given her size.

As my co-correspondents have reported--conditions are gray and the wind is
picking up. The rain has eased since yesterday.

I attach two photos. Both are from John Smiths Bay in Smiths Parish. As
you can see the swell has built since yesterdy and the surf is breaking high
on the beach. By tomorrow this picture will look very different.

We are all ready for Flo's arrival and are still crossing our fingers that
she doesn't strengthen too much prior to reaching us. That said, tomorrow
nevertheless will be a very sloppy day here.

Until the next report--

Greg

Good morning
My co correpsondents are giving great updates. I jsut wanted to let the reader know a bit about Bermuda. We are a small island on 21 sq miles total so we can fit inside this giant storm many many times. We are shaped like a fish hook and our city is in the middle of the part that is straight. So even if Flo will be 7 miles away its a direct hit ( oh  dear).  We didn't stand much chance of being missed unless the storm was going to be at couple hundred miles off ( wishful thinking).
I went out for an early walk around the garden. The sky still had a couple of patches of blue in it. My cat Simba was enjoying chasing leaves and tall blades of grass.. silly thing forgot he is 10 in cat years he was having so much fun.He is now napping on the couch. My other cat Calypso is skittish on a good day ..tried to get her in the house only thing that will get her is the sound of food. Hopefully she'll come when it time for me to leave in a couple of hours to go to my dad's.
I am trying to find all the battery operated toys to entertain my 4 yr old through the storm as TV and computers will probably not be accessible. Wouldn't you know my son has used up all my AA batteries for his stuff  (smile that's my boy ).
Well we are ready and wating .... pray Flo takes her time to strengthen.

- West End update
  • From: "Susan MacLachlan" <bdawatch at gmail.com>

It is now Sunday morning and the sky is grey. We did not get the predicted thunderstorms last night, at least not in the west end of the island.

Yesterday was only slightly different from a regular Saturday on the island. I live on the opposite end to St-Georges and the Airport.  Yes, there were people shopping for supplies and preparing their yards and making sure boats were secured in Mangrove Bay but, all in all it was pretty laid back.

Hurricane supplies were still available at 4:30pm yesterday afternoon, at the Sommerset pharmacy, Dollar Depot and Market Place. There was even a very entrepreneurial woman at our local gas station selling wind up flashlights/radio/cell phone chargers. She said she would be out there again today. There were virtually no line ups at our gas station, at least not at the times I went past.

I spoke to several tourists, last night, who were staying at a resort near by and they were off to a meeting being held at the hotel to discuss closing parts of the hotel today. This particular resort has rooms on stilts over the water. Not a place to be in a hurricane, though the same units weathered Hurricane Fabian 3 years ago with virtually no damage

I am off for my morning walk with the dog and will report back later today.

Stay Safe

Several weeks ago, a strange cat adopted us.  The kids wanted me to give her a name, and I called her Flo.  Coincidence?  Well, obviously!  Strange though. Unfortunately she likes to bite - I hope it's not a sign.

This morning, the air has that mugginess associated with tropical weather systems.  The air is thick and hazy.  There is a lone car driving along the airport road.  Slight chop on south shore.  A brisk breeze.  Flo is now a hurricane.  She is forecasted to become a Cat 2 just before she gets here, but I am not sure she'll make it to a Cat 2.

I'm going to have a cup of tea and enjoy the view from my window while I can.

Presently, all's calm. A few "puffs" of wind from time to time--but other
than that a normal night, there is a building swell on the south shore.
Although Flo is expected to strengthen--she hasn't yet.. I think Bermuda is

Bermuda has been vigilant. We are ready. Lets' see what tomorrow brings!

Bermuda in Waiting
All over Bermuda we are getting ready for Florence. Shopping at the Hardware Stores and Supermarkets is very brisk. On Friday September 8th I went to a supermarket hoping to get a 5 gallon jug of water but they were all gone. The hardwares were doing well selling ply board. I drove around briefly Saturday afternoon and saw long lines of people taking trash to the domestic waste depot. By Devil's Hole I also saw a number of boats owners lining up with their trucks and trailers to take their boats out of the water. Later on as I sat by the Aquarium parking lot watching the water flowing out of Harrington Sound a number of boats were making their way under Flatt's bridge into the sound. I assumed they too were on their way to Devil's hole to be pulled from the water. During my drive I also noticed a number of houses that had ply board covering windows and door.
Yes Bermuda is getting ready for Florence.
Now all we can do is sit and wait hoping Florence will not be a big one.

It is sticky and hot. The winds are still light  and there hasn't been any rain near Shelly Bay since about 7 this evening. Just poked my head out the kitchen door and there is a hazy full moon shining through light layer of cloud or haze. The frogs and crickets are having an extra loud chorus tonight as they enjoyed the rain earlier.
I am going to enjoy a cool shower as we might no have power for  couple of days after tomorrow. Many thanks for al lthe prayers.. we definitely need them.
I am off to bed shortly. Probably won't get much sleep tomorrow night.
The morning I anticipate will sound and look very different.

Hubby was up at the crack of dawn with the baby, and there is definitely that sense of something impending in the air.  The ants are going crazy, the cats are smashing back tin after tin of food.  The local grocery store was late opening this morning and there was a line of people waiting outside, eager to get their supplies.  Hubby went to get a giant bottle of Gosling's Black Seal Rum (got to have those Dark 'n' Stormies during a hurricane), but they were all sold out, so we had to settle for a smaller bottle.  Ah well. Oh, he got lots of tinned food too, so we are all set.

South shore from my view - over Castle Harbour and Castle Island - looks fairly calm, but I expect it will look very different tomorrow.  It will be nice and quiet here once the airport closes (until the roar of the wind kicks in!)

We spent the day cutting plyboard.  From my kitchen window, we can see the airport, the Causeway and the place where lots of boats are pulled from the water at Ferry Reach.  Like Greg said, there were many boats lined up waiting to be pulled out.  Unfortunately, I will have to board that window up tomorrow morning - it is the best view from my house, but safety first!

School is cancelled for Monday, so I have to make sure I revise my lesson plans before the power goes out!  I'm sure the kids are celebrating an extra day to their vacation - my girls certainly are - let's hope they can keep smiling.

Good Afternoon All--

As my co-correspondent has reported--we are now seeing the beginning of
Flo's arrival, its gray and raining lightly. Winds are light to fresh on
the beaches. NHC has not yet upgraded her status so Flo is still a lady in
waiting.

Attached are two photos I snapped on my rounds today. One shows about 20
boats waiting to be hauled from Harrington Sound at Devil's Hole in Smiths
Parish. As you can see, we are taking Flo seriously. The other shot is
looking east from John Smiths Bay in Smiths Parish. The ocean is more
churned than usual. Unfortunately this is nothing compared to what I expect
to see tomorrow afternoon and Monday.

Otherwise, we are definately in the final stages of prep. During my travels
I noticed many more boarded houses this time compared to shortly before
Fabian's arrival. That is good.

Will keep the news coming.

Have a great Saturday night!

Greg

PS--

It is about 3:30 in Bermuda and the blue skies are gone. Presently we have a thick layer of light grey cloud and some light rain off and on.  I am in a bit of a valley so don't see much breeze yet... but if I look at some of the taller trees above me the branches are moving gently.
Well seems like most of our preps are done. The line for the city dump was 50 cars long... the grocery store shelves are empty. Lines at the gas stations are long too. I have done all I can ..tomorrow morning I am going to lock my cats in the kitchen and go sit out the storm at my dads with my little girl. My fluffy ginger tom SIMBA will probably trash the kitchen but at least he'll be warm and dry.
The latest weather report has thestorm passing 12 NM west of us. Not good we get ALL the wind. Our airport will be closing as of 10 tonight. And they hope to reopen it Tuesday afternoon ... at the earliest. No flights coming in from JFK or Miami tonight. The ariport is at sea level and last time a large portion was under water. We also lost the bridge leading to the airport..if that happens again then the people in St George and St Davids will be cut off from the main land. I believe they have boats in place to carry people back and forth as needed.
The radio stations are doing a great job keeping us informed..
will post later this evening

Good Afternnon All--

Its now almost 1:00 pm here on our lovely Island and one can tell that
something is in the air--the breeze is freshening and a southeasterly swell
is building on our South Shore. Its a very warm and humid day. Flo has
winds of 70 now and the Bermuda Government has issued a tropical storm
warning for us.

Bermudians are paying very close attention to this storm--I have just come
home from buying a chainsaw and have seen lines at the gas pumps, the
grocery stores, the water store and many boarded up windows. We are getting
prepared for a long and stormy couple of days---

Will report more.

- The Saturday Flo!
  • From: "Greg Wojciechowski" <gwojo at ibl.bm>
  • Date: Sat, 9 Sep 2006 07:07:54 -0300
Good Monring All!

Well Saturday brings us a very different picture. Thankfully everyone here
has taken this storm seriously and has or is in preparing. Last night I
re-positioned my boat to a "hurricane hole" where fingers crossed, she'll
ride through Flo smoothly. The ride down North Shore was calm and peaceful.
South Shore was still rather quiet though I'm sure that will very quickly
change over the next 12-24 hours. Government has posted high surf warnings
on our beaches.

Its a calm, still, beautiful morning here. Some high cloud building in from
the SE though and by looking at the sky one can tell that the weather is
begnning to change.

Here is Monday's forecast from the Bermuda Weather Service (BWS)

Monday -
Winds easterly 80 to 90 knots gusting 110 knots, becoming westerly 40 to 60
knots in the afternoon & 20 to 30 knots in the late evening becoming
northeasterly 15 to 20 knots overnight... Widespread rain, showers,
scattered thunderstorms, and possible tornados developing with fair to poor
visibility. High and dangerous seas. Storm surge flooding is possible...
Seas increasing, inside the reef 5 to 7 ft... Outside the reef 30 to 40 ft..

Flo is beginning to develop as the forecasters predicted. Today's CPA fix
has her passing to the WEST at 10 miles early Monday afternoon (that's just
abut a direct hit!). Bermuda weather is predicitng 30-40 foot seas outside
the reef at the height of the storm. Luckily for Bermuda our reef line is
our safety net and protects us from high surf though waves inside the reef
can be large and in some places damaging during a powerfl storm. The
ultimate impact of Flo will certainly depend on how close and on which side
of our island she passes, both have been changing with each advisory.

Today, Bermuda will finish battening down the hatches, we have had plenty of
warning and we are using it wisely.

Will report more as the day goes on.

Have a great Saturday!

To look outside you would not know we are under hurricane watch. The moon is full and there are very few clouds in the sky. The ones  that are there are like big fluffy cotton balls and just gently floating by. There is not much breeze but the temperature has dropped a few degrees.  Thank goodness as it was oppressively hot today. The little whistling frogs and crickets are having a wonderful time singing.Perhaps we shall get lucky and have Florence turn more quickly away.
Tomorrow I shall take my son with me to shoot some before pictures of various places on our island. I hope there will not be too much permanent damage from this storm.Enjoy the full moon.

Nice and calm in St. George's...Every store has extra D-cell batteries out (mainland people take note). St. George's was hit badly in Fabian, the last major hurricane to skirt by and we are all taking this threat seriously. The kids at my school have their first day back on Monday, and the teachers are all setting up this week.  It feels very strange to set everything up for the new students, but pack lots of things away again in case the storm hits.  In Fabian, my school was hit badly and we lost some classrooms (including mine) right around the beginning of the term, so some of us who remember this are a bit unnerved.

Anyway, I'm all set, my three kids are all set, and I have my plyboard to put up.  See you guys on the other side of the Causeway next week!

Good Afternoon,

As my Bermudian co-correspondent mentioned--people are most certainly
stocking up on essentials now, Hamilton is very busy.

Latest glance at the satellite pictures on NHC show that Flo is beginning to
wind wind wind--so it appears that she is beginning to act like a storm---We
are still holding our breath that Flo passes a comfortable distance to our
east, but due to the size of the system we are fairly confident that we will
get some weather.

The Bermuda Government EMO I understand are meeting and I would guess that
appropriate watches and warning if necessary will shortly be issued.

Meanwhile--I am taping windows!!!!

Will write again as new information is available!

I have just returned from my usual Friday errands. A few of the observations I made during my island tour included line ups at gas stations, lots of cars at the local hardware and drugstores and definitely more people at the grocery store filling up their carts with water, batteries, canned goods and beer!

People are definitely talking about Flo and are preparing for her visit. I am sure the activity will increase even more tomorrow.

Thanks Gert for including us on the radar image, sure shows us how small we really are. Yikes!

Until next time

Cheers
Susan

- The Weekend Flo Show!

Good Afternoon,

The 11:00 release from the NHC hasn't really helped clarify exactly what Flo
has in mind for us. Though a look at the satellite loops seems to indicate
that Flo is trying to get organized. In any event--we are still hustling
about getting prepared as this is a large system and by the looks of things
we will get weather from it.

Otherwise, it is warm and sunny with a nice southerly breeze, temp is 84 and
humidity is 74 water temp is 83.

We'll just have to watch how Flo develops. One thing is certain she is the
topic of conversation in Bermuda today!

Good morning from beautiful sunny Bermuda!

One would never know it by looking outside that there is a potential threat looming on the horizon. We have blue skies with a few clouds lingering. It is warm, a little humid with a bit of a breeze at the moment.

The only signs are coming from the local weather reports and people discussing Flo.

As per the Bermuda Weather Service at 5:30 am this morning TS Flo will be at 39 nm to the south of us on Monday morning (Sept 11). Preparations should definitely be underway if you are not already prepared. This said one never knows and Flo could still change her mind, here is to hoping she exercises her woman's prerogative!

Cheers

- SLOW GROW FLO!!!

Good Morning All!

Well there's good news and not so good news to report this morning---the
good news is that for the last two reporting periods, Flo has not
strengthened as Forecasters first thought she would. The not so good news
is that she is still predicted to gather strength and come within 20 miles
of our beautiful island Monday morning when sustained winds are predicted
to be 90knts with higher gusts.

This morning conditions are quite nice, 80 degrees, humidity is a bit high
at 84% and the winds are gentle out of the south at 9 knts. The waters in
the Sounds and North Shore have a slight ripple but nothing compared to what
they will look like come Sunday through Monday!

A friend works in the wholesale business and mentioned that the retailers
were stocking up on all the essentials for a storm and that residents were
now very focussed on getting prepared. Bermudians are no strangers to rough
weather as we do experience "robust" winter storms and the occasional
tropical systems. Thankfully as my Bermudian colleague who reported earlier
mentioned--our houses are built of stone and can withstand a healthy blow.

This weekend will be very busy for us, boats will be repositioned to safe
harbour or pulled, houses battened down and all preparations rushed to
completion prior to sundown on Sunday.

Flo is still a distance away and we have watched these systems do some very
strange things when they get into our waters, but that said, we never let
our guard down as memories of Emily are still too fresh!

Will keep the information coming from our perspective as long as we can.

Have a great Friday!

Greg

Good evening all
After a very quiet summer things in Bermuda look to be in for a bit of a blow. We have been advised the TS Florence will be passing quite close... www.sharkoil.bm  as possible cat 2 hurricane on Monday . The enormous size and speed of the storm are our biggest concerns. Most of our houses are made from brick and the roofs of slate however the length of time we might have to endure the storm is going to put us all to the test. We are praying that it misses us. Fabian was the last major hurricane to hit  almost 3 yrs ago to the day September 6th. I will keep you posted as long as I have internet access.
We are already seeing some changes in the surf on the south coast.
Public school is scheduled to open on Monday.. I am a teacher... so looks like the kids might get couple extra days on an already long holiday.
Keep us in your prayers
Marion

Good Afternoon All,

At this stage, all eyes in Bermuda are closely watching Flo who is currently
forecast to pass within 83 nm of the Island on Monday morning. Of course we
are hoping that this long range forecast will prove wrong but nevertheless
we are beginning to plan and think ahead about preparations.

You wouldn't think something was brewing by our weather today. Bermuda is
hot and humid under a bright blue sunny sky.

Will keep information coming as we get it!

Let's hope Flo gets herself tired out and just limps quietly past us!

Good day All!

As you can imagine all eyes in Bermuda are now on Flo swirling around to our
Southeast, we are all just hoping that the long range forecasts turn out to
be as unreliable as many of the forecasters say they are--

Other than Flo, it is a perfect day here in Bermuda and we hope the weather
continues in this manner!!

Fingers crossed for us all that we skate through the '06 season without any
unwanted visitors!

Good morning to all!

Although it is a beautiful sunny and humid day here in Bermuda it looks like we will be monitoring the advancement of Tropical Storm Florence to our south. Here is to hoping she decides to vanish in the triangle.

Hello all--

We certainly hope Debby decides not to visit our shores--of course that
said--we are keeping a cautious and watchful eye to the East!

The weather here has been beautiful and everyone is enjoying their summer,
its perfect August weather!

All the best

Bermuda checking in,

Its been a sizzling summer until last night when we had a front come though
and what a racket it created. Very vivid lightening and thunder--the kind
that the crack and roll could be heard long after the initial flash.
Luckily no reports of any direct hits, which is welcomed news for all of our
electrical devices!

We received a very welcomed 1.75 inches of rain but had to endure an
overcast grey Bermuda day which is unusual for us this time of year. That
said, we are grateful to have our water tanks topped up!

So far all has been quiet on the horizon and hope that it stays that way
until the end of the season for us all!

Enjoy your summer.

Greetings All,

Summer has arrived, the Bermuda Weather Service is predicting a high of 81
today. The sun is bright, the water is warm and the breezes are light. Its
a perfect time to be here.

The Newport Bermuda Offshore race is currently underway with about 265
yachts heading toward the Island, according to the official website for the
race, the leaders are approximately 100nm off our shores. Needless to say
the balance of the week will be very lively and festive here in Hamilton!

All looks quiet on the horizon for the moment and we hope it stays that way
here and for the rest of our friends down south for the balance of the
season.

Hi All
I am trying this out to make sure I know how to do it  if I need to. The weather here in Bermuda is sunny and clear at the moment. There is a very light breeze but the temperatures and humidity are just perfect.. you can move without melting.
We are promised some heavy rain Wednesnday and Thursday... we shall see.

- The weather service said it was a "gustnado"

Greetings all,

Bermuda checking in once again after a long, cool, windy winter. Spring has
arrived and with it our usual spring like weather. On Wednesday night we
had a squall line that passed through our area which produced (much needed)
rain and strong winds. Bermuda's Weather Service said as the line went
through the wind swirled and interacted with the land mass and other wind
currents and created a "gustnado" never heard of one of those before but it
sure sounds groovy!!!

Weather is fining up for us and the water temperature is on the rise. The
Wahoo are biting and our visitors look happy now that they can get here
using JetBlue!!

Fingers are crossed for a pleasant, quiet summer season for us all.

GW
