- TD #27

  • Date: Mon, 14 Nov 2005 11:35:51 -0400
Inspite of the fact that the satellite pics have shown alot of deep convection over St. Lucia all night and morning long, i'm very surprised at the very little rain we have experienced so far. Infact it barely rained through the night since my last report and whatever rain which has fallen so far has just been light and continuous rain which is still continuing as I type. And the winds have been very light so far today .. not more than 20 - 25mph generally speaking. I can actually see the core of TD #27 from right outside my balcony as most of the dark, angry thunderclouds are just off the west coast of St. Lucia but it's a pity that I don't have a camera.

It's a normal Monday morning here though with all schools and businesses wide open .... which is a surprise to me ..... unlike in the neighbouring Islands.

9:30pm .... Light and continuous rainfall accompanied by strong gusts to tropical storm force approaching 50mph but it isn't anything we haven't seen before. Just good entertainment for the weather freaks but lets hope it doesn't worsen. I'm actually more concerned about the high risk of flooding more than anythign else.

This strong tropical wave looks very serious right now. I'm amazed at the rapid strengthening which has occured tonight. Just this morning this was not more than a collection of showers moving towards us but now we could be facing a tropical depression if not a storm on Sunday according to the National Hurricane Center which has designated the central Windwards from around Barbados, St. Vincent and St. Lucia as a tropical cyclone danger area within the next 24 hrs. Most people on the island are not aware of the system. Heavy rains this week have already caused heavy flooding and landslides to parts of the country so it looks like this unusually strong wave for mid-November could be a potential headache ..... At 12:30 am it's still a lovely moon-lit night with one or two light showers earlier. Small cumulus clouds are racing across the sky from NE to SW and the wind is not more than 10 - 15 mph from the same direction.

This tropical wave produced alot of rain today (2 - 3 inches) which has cause some flooding and landslides but everything is okay tonight. Quite a bit more rain than the last system but nowhere near the amount of wind we had last Thursday/Friday. I'm looking forward for a much drier weekend ahead.

The damage from last night is mainly confined to foilage with some trees down. A massive squall just passed through with a significant amount of rain and some flash flooding. It looks like we are in for a night of heavy rain now. The clouds have really darkened with heavy cumulonimbus clouds in all directions. Anyone in the path of this system should take it every seriously even if it doesn't become a cyclone because there are some voilent gusts of wind embedded in those thunderstorms especially to the north of the center.

My thoughts and prayers are still with those persons in the Yucatan Peninsula who are being struck my Wilma. Thank you for the pictures.

There may be more bad weather on the way next week with the computer models trying to develop the wave in the mid-atlantic and then move it towards the islands by Wednesday. Let's hope they are all wrong ......

It has been raining since last evening, and this morning I woke up to some
serious winds blowing. We are in the clouds here in Plateau... My wife's

bushes right out of the ground!! The way it looks it is going to be like
this all day, or so it seems.

- very strong winds are hitting St. Lucia
  • From: "mike davis" <mdavis76 at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 21 Oct 2005 04:55:58 -0400
4:45am .... The weather continues to worsen. The howling winds are what is responsible for jumping me out of sleep. The gusts outside are terrifying. Unbelievably we still have power. I haven't seen this much wind in St. Lucia since hurricane Ivan brushed us last year. I have no weather instruments at my disposal but those gusts I can tell you are just below hurricane strength, possible in the high 60's if not higher and i'm on the sheltered side of the island. It looks like there will be a fair bit of foilage and structural damage to report at 1st light in a couple hours. Infact I can already see some broken branches lying in the yard and i've heard trees snapping in the wind a few times throughout the night. Upgrading this system to a 40 or 50mph tropical storm might not be a bad idea by the NHC because it is certainly acting like one!

2:15am .. We are being hit by some significant winds now. The winds are howling all around the house and my doors have been rattling all night. Things have gotten much worse in the last 30 - 45 mins. Winds are gusting in excess of 55mph now. A flower pot was just blown off my balcony railing. There will most likely be some damage when the sunrises. Especially to banana trees as they are vulnerable in strong winds like this. As I type, I just heard a loud crashing sound outside which sounds like a fallen tree. This 'tropical wave' certainly meets the criteria of a tropical depression if not a storm!

It's been raining almost non-stop for the last 15 - 18 hours and it is still raining tonight at 11:30pm but the winds have really picked up in the last 2 hours or so with some of the gusts exceeding 40mph. No reports of flooding yet but there must be some degree of it somewhere with this kind of rainfall.

I'm getting nervous about this system to our east. At 10am, the skies are very dark and grey with rumblings of thunder nearby and the winds are starting to turn towards the N - NE which is a bad sign. Still nothing much being said about the system. Hopefully that will change later today because we need to know whats going on.

Hurricane Wilma is a very dangerous storm and I hope and pray that it doesnt affect anyone in the Northwestern Caribbean seriously as this is already a badly hurricane ravaged area in the last couple of years. But while all the attention is focused on Wilma, there's a large and vigorous looking tropical wave located about 400miles east of the Windwards that is getting better organised very quickly. The National Hurricane Center isn't saying much on it so far and that is quite understandable with a cat. 5 hurricane threatening another part of the basin. This system does seem to be developing a surface center near 11.5n 53w and NOAA buoys located in the region are already reporting winds of 25 - 30 mph with seas approaching 10 feet. So this could be pre-Alpha in its formative stages. What is known for sure is that some foul weather might move into the islands on Thursday with some gusty winds so we should be prepared for any eventualities.

  • Date: Fri, 16 Sep 2005 15:31:50 -0400
The vigorous tropical wave that we have been tracking for several days now has really gotten much better organised today with deep convection developing near the center and bands of developing showers starting to curve cyclonically around the system as shown in visible satellite pictures this afternoon. At 2pm, the 1009mb center of the system was located near 11.6n 53.0w or about 450 miles ESE of Barbados and moving W to WNW at 17mph. On its current speed and track, it will begin to affect the Windward and southern Leeward Islands by tomorrow Saturday. Therefore, residence in the Islands should be ready to take quick action this weekend should the system develop into a cyclone because TS warnings may be posted for the Islands with little warning time.

A rather strong earth tremor just hit St Lucia about 15 mins ago at approximately 10:05am on Tuesday morning. Preliminary reports indicate that it was felt over a large part of the island. People have said that they were running out of their homes. I headed for my front door also because this was rather heavy. Reports are also coming through the radio as I write. More information will follow once it is received.

  • Date: Sun, 21 Aug 2005 15:33:39 -0400
There's a vigorous tropical wave located about 2350 miles east of the Lesser Antilles. All of the ingredients necessary for this system to strenghen into a classical Cape Verde type major hurricane are pretty much staring us in the face now. However, have no fear ... at least for now because the computer models turn this system almost due northward into the open Atlantic Ocean by the time it reaches 45west which means that it will most likely stay well east of us. The bad news is that the models also predict the formation of another disturbance immediately behind it and places it south of 10north by the time it reaches 40west sometime towards the end of this week. Therefore the next tropical wave which is about to emerge off West Africa must be closely watched.

TROPICAL WAVES...

FAR E ATLC WAVE IS ALONG 22W S OF 20N MOVING W 10 KT.  A 1009 MB
LOW IS ALONG THE WAVE NEAR 13N.  LOW LEVEL CURVED BANDING IS
NOTED WITH PLENTY OF CONVECTION.  THERE IS LITTLE SHEAR NEAR
THE SYSTEM AND SLOW DEVELOPMENT IS EXPECTED.  COMPUTER MODELS
STRONGLY SUGGEST THAT THIS WAVE HAS A CHANCE OF TURNING INTO A

I can't remember the last time i saw dust haze as thick as this. We are bathed in lovely sunshine this afternoon which means that the sky is supposed to be nice and blue but you can't see it. The haze is so thick that it is creating a whitish-brownish film over the sky making the blue sky totally invisible. The visibility is quite poor also ... i can't see more than a couple of miles out over the Caribbean Sea and the view of the island of Martinique which is almost a stone throw away from St. Lucia is non-existent.

There's some potential tropical trouble brewing east of us this afternoon. There is a very large tropical wave in the eastern Atlantic which is getting better organised. This is the healthiest wave that far east so far this season and it's over warm water.

If this level of activity continues much longer, this could become the most active hurricane season on record since hurricane records were kept all the way back in 1851. The record is 21 storms back in 1933 followed by 19 in 1995. Coincidentally, there are only 21 names on the storm list for any year so what happens if we exceed 21 cyclones in 2005? Can someone provide me with an answer?

We experienced some very vigorous thunderstorm activity all night long. It started about 1am and didn't stop until about 5am. Just hours upon hours of constant thunderstorms .... continuous cloud to ground lightning strikes which lit up the sky turning night into day and heavy rumblings of thunder. Activity so intense that it took the power along with it and it seems that some of the TV satellites were damaged based on the poor reception that i'm getting this morning. Right now at 7am it is still completely overcast and rumblings of distant thunder can still be heard which are most likely coming from the very dark looking clouds with can be seen all the way over the island of Martinique.

The strongest part of a hurricane is almost always the north eastern quadrant.

It was about 4 am. About the same time that our reporters from St. Vincent reported their worst conditions. By then the eye of Emily was position SSW of St. Lucia and St Vincent and then came a violent squall with the worst conditions we experienced all night. I've seen enough to know that some of the wind gusts that i witnessed peeping put my window were at least 50mph. Then the very heavy rain which came along with it created a loud roar outside which reminded me of Ivan last year. I'd be very surprised if we didn't have any flooding.

Looking outside at 6am though ... and there is minimal damage in my area. A couple bent and broken branches, some of the banana trees are tilted on one side and the see looks brown because of the heavy rains. I'll provide more information once the reports from the other parts of the island come through. Particularly the south. It's still a little windy this morning with gusts still near 25 - 30 mph at extreme times.

2am ... The conditions are nowhere near as bad as the satellite pics convey. Yes it is true that we have lots of cloudiness over us but these clouds are mainly high level cirrus clouds with extremely cold cloud top temperatures and not the usual heavy cumulonimbus thunderstorm clouds we are used to seeing with such deep convective activity. Infact right now the winds have gone dead calm literally speaking and the rain has ceased for now. The bad weather can resume at anytime now. You can just sense that something is building up out there with this sudden erie calm

1:20am .. A strong squall just moved through with strong gusts to tropical storm force and heavy rain. Just as quickly as it came ... it went and the winds have died down almost completely with only light rain now. Nevertheless, here in Castries, we are experiencing periods of strong gusts and relative calm between and this should continue throughout the night.

It's been a long day so i decided to take a short 2/3 hour rest and now i'm waking up to the 11pm update and i'm reading that hurricane warnings have been re-posted for the islands and that Emily has winds of 90mph heading for Grenada. I'm so stunned I still believe i'm in the middle of a nightmare. This is already almost as powerful as Ivan and the country just cannot do with that now. My heart goes out to Grenada this evening and I am very sorry for our sister isle right now. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Hi,
Castries has virtually shut down. The supermarkets and gas stations are
still open till 4:30
The rain has eased up since two o'clock, but it is still as overcast as this
morn, no blue sky in sight...
Normally I can see Martinique from my veranda, not today very low
visibility..
Weather Stats: 78°F, Humidity 94%, Barometer 29.92 inHg intermittent rain
and overcast skies.
As far as I can see from the various forecasts is that we are being spared
this time...

1:20pm .... It has continued to rain lightly but continuously since my last report and the winds are blowing at speeds of less than 20mph but no problems so far. The word is that the country will shut down at 2pm. The worst weather that St. Lucia will experience will come during the late afternoon and evening hours.

This is not the 1st time that a tropical cyclone named Emily is affecting the Windwards. Rewinding right back to September 21st in the year 1987, Tropical Storm Emily passed directly over St. Vincent with sustained winds of 50mph resulting in heavy damage to banana plantations, flooding and some structural damage. Emily of 2005 is a litte stronger and could even be a hurricane when it passes through the islands. Lets hope that it is not as damaging.

- Emily 's rain
  • From: "Frans van Santbrink" <j69ds at candw.lc>
  • Date: Wed, 13 Jul 2005 11:42:13 -0400
Hello to all,

It has been raining steadily (mostly light rain) here since early morning
with a few gusts of wind (such as you might experience on a windy day). Most
bussines' are closing early (midday) to allow everybody time to get home in
case Emily changes track and strength.
However it Emily seems to be keeping south of St Lucia, we are on the edge
of the path prediction by NOAA, but we will have to keep an eye on her.. (my
take: we should be ok but BE PREPARED)
Current weather here:
Official from Vigie (airport): Temp 78 degrees F, Humidity is 94%, Wind is
East at 6 Mph, barometer 29.92 inHg
>From Hewannora (airport): Temp 77 Degrees F, Humidity 94%, Wind ENE at 20
Mph, Barometer 29.95 inHg

Hare Krsna,

10am ... The weather conditions are changing quickly for the worse. The sky has become completely overcast with thunderstorms and light and continuous rainfall. The once light winds have suddenly started to gust frequently and quite impressively. People are scampering through the city of Castries to get last minute hurricane supplies inspite of the windy conditions. I'll try to update as often as possible once the weather conditions permit me to.

- hurricane warning
  • From: "mike davis" <mdavis76 at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Tue, 12 Jul 2005 20:54:31 -0400
It looks like this very early season tropical cyclone will pass over the extreme southern Windwards tomorrow. The bad news for Grenada is that the WNW motion is refusing to materialise and the system has been moving directly westwards along 11n all day today at a much faster forward speed. It's track looks very similar to Ivan of 2004 but thankfully it is nowhere near that intensity. Emily should be taken very seriously though and a couple other waves east of it bear watching also.

Today was a very hot and dry day in St. Lucia as you'd expect on the day before a possible hurricane strike. Right now the weather is very calm and we await Emily's unwelcomed visit here in the Lesser Antilles.......

Looks like we may have some weather in the Windwards in a day or two. It also looks like this could be one of those systems that strengthens when it passes into the Caribbean.

10-15 KT. WELL DEFINED LOW LEVEL CIRCULATION IS OBSERVED
ESPECIALLY ON THE LAST VISIBLE SATELLITE IMAGES. SCATTERED

June 1 came and with it the rains. By 5 June the wave that passed through Saint Lucia dumped rain on us for two days and has now become Arlene. The trough that is currently passing just north of us looks to being giving the Leewards some much needed rains. Looks like we in for a season of some serious rock and roll

Trying to get the exterior of the house painted 1/2 done the way it looks it may remain that way for a while
