Antigua   has been having  bad weather!   AS MUCH OF THE islands have... VERY  GUSTY WINDS   -- 45 miles on my  wind gauge on the  Atlantic  side.   This is very bad for the  Atlantic rowers  (see  Johns link to the  rowers  below).   In fact  they have just put out  a call on our  local radio for  Antigua to pray for the rowers as they try to  cover the last leg into Antigua with very bad seas   around them.   Very unusual to have this  bad weather this time of year....

I came across this article; I certainly hope they are wrong.

The temperatures have been quite low, for November/December, I don’t want to think what will happen in January-February!

- Too cold for us...
  • From: "Alan Scholl" <scholla at candw.ag>
  • Date: Tue, 29 Nov 2005 07:34:34 -0400

Starting last evening the temperature slowly dropped, for those of you who live in cold climates, it may be a bit of a joke or snicker but 21C is a bit too much for us. LOL

The temperature at the airport was 21C between 2-5AM. In some valleys it probably was a bit lower. Thank goodness for water heaters otherwise I would still be in bed.

Looking at the sat maps this morning answered the question I posed yesterday. TS DELTA popped up on the maps this morning but does not appear to provide any threat to land. A few ships crossing the Atlantic may have a bit of a blow as it is already 65mph. The ARC is at Day 4, I hope they are all keeping an eye on this one.

The weather has been brilliant for the last few days but the morning temperatures have been slowly dropping. Thanks goodness for water heaters.

Most of today was clear skies but this afternoon, a few clouds seem to be moving in, no rain just some large patches of cloud cover.

I certainly hope that GAMMA was the last of the many swirlies we saw attacking the northern hemisphere this season, WOW.

Have a good Thanksgiving to all who celebrate it.

It is still a bit breezy with 15-20 knots and the trees are rocking quite a bit. Hopefully, we will have some nice sunshine for our Independence Day activities tomorrow.

Didn’t realize it until I left for work but our yard is underwater and the gutters are flowing. Rain did wake me this morning a few times but I suspect there was more than I heard based on the amount of water around.

However, the sky is blue and the sun is coming up, seems like it will be a nice day for the beach, I am sure our visitors will be happy.

Tuesday marks 24 years of our Independence so lots of festivities abound.

I wish all the residents in the aftermaths of the onslaught experienced in this hemisphere a speedy recovery and prayers to our Central American neighbours as BETA charges up for another.

Do have a good weekend.

  • From: "Martha Watkins Gilkes" <gilkesm at candw.ag>
  • Date: Sat, 22 Oct 2005 10:57:34 -0400
As we thought   TD 25 has just formed...which started  to develop as it passed thru  Antigua and the surrounding islands  during the last  few days bringing the bad weather we have had.   This will surely be ALPHA  which  will be HISTORY  for the  most active storm season in HISTORY.   Let's hope the  fat lady sings soon and we come to an end of this hurricane season.    One model has it  turning north and not  affecting Florida, which we hope will be the case.   Our weather is still overcast  but the  rain has stopped.
Still watching WILMA and thinking  of all  affected.

WEATHER TO THE RIGHT WEATHER TO THE LEFT.. WE ARE SURROUNDED
BY  THESE STORM CLOUDS

THIS  SAT SHOT  SHOWS  THE ISLANDS  COVERED IN  HEAVY WEATHER.
YOU CAN  HARDLY SEE THE ISLANDS UNDER THE CLOUDS. THIS IS
WHY WE HAVE HAD THIS HEAVY WEATHER FOR SEV. DAYS NOW
WITH  GUSTY WINDS AND  LOTS OF RAIN AND  HEAVY SEAS.
THE ISLANDS TO OUR   WEST SHOULD KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON THIS
SYSTEM AS IT MOVES ACROSS.

  • From: "Martha Watkins Gilkes" <gilkesm at candw.ag>
  • Date: Fri, 21 Oct 2005 16:45:47 -0400
Antigua is  having very stormy weather and lots of   just  now  as  reported below... but this system should not develop  until it is  past the leewards,  thank goodness.  It will most likely become  APLHA.  We are making history here.
We are getting much  rain and  lots of  gusty wind but are thankful it is not  worse..I have heard the weather channel mention us but be assured  we are fine and  it is nothing like  a hurricane.   we hope  we will continue to be lucky as this hurricane  season comes  to an end soon.
Thinking of  those in the path of  WILMA  right now!

A WESTWARD MOVING TROPICAL WAVE THAT HAS ENTERED THE EASTERN
CARIBBEAN SEA THIS MORNING IS PRODUCING SHOWERS AND GUSTY WINDS
OVER PORTIONS OF THE LESSER ANTILLES.  THERE ARE SOME INDICATIONS
FROM SATELLITE IMAGERY THAT A SURFACE CIRCULATION COULD BE
FORMING... AND SHOWER ACTIVITY REMAINS FAIRLY CONCENTRATED NEAR THE
DEVELOPING CIRCULATION CENTER.

For the last 30 minutes, the wind got really strong blowing between 25-35 knotrs with a short gust that was even higher.

Since I have no wind instruments I will not hazard a guess. It has dropped down a bit but still blowing somewhat.

Last night we had somewhat of a misty but clear enough sky to see the moon and some stars. However, in some parts, the wind was howling 20-25 knots with some gusts that could have approached 30 or more. The winds are light today with the tree tops just barely dancing around. Not sure what the forecasts for later are but the weekend should bring some nicer (hot) weather again.

Generally, it is also cooling down. The shower temperature was NOT warm this morning either ;-)

Although it had cleared up a bit, the weather has taken a turn for the worse. Total cloud cover (8 oktas), rain is heavy and the trees are blowing about.

I just spoke to the met office here about a trip to Grenada today and his words were “tell him don’t go”. So I suspect the wave may be coming a little more than just a wave.

While all the focus is on WILMA, the wave sitting off the Windwards is not looking pretty. I hope the picture looks more alarming for what it seems. So far, we have had thunder and rain this morning, and it is completely overcast from my vantage point. It is windy with light gusts but it is also cool J

...AN AIR FORCE RECONNAISSANCE PLANE MEASURED 168 KNOTS AT 700 MB
AND ESTIMATED A MINIMUM PRESSURE OF 884 MB EXTRAPOLATED FROM 700MB.
UNOFFICIALLY...THE METEOROLOGIST ON BOARD THE PLANE RELAYED AN
EXTRAPOLATED 881 MB PRESSURE AND MEASURED 884 MB WITH A DROPSONDE.
THIS IS ALL IN ASSOCIATION WITH A VERY SMALL EYE THAT HAS BEEN
OSCILLATING BETWEEN 2 AND 4 N MI DURING EYE PENETRATIONS. THIS IS
PROBABLY THE LOWEST MINIMUM PRESSURE EVER OBSERVED IN THE ATLANTIC
BASIN AND IS FOLLOWED BY THE 888 MB MINIMUM PRESSURE ASSOCIATED
WITH HURRICANE GILBERT IN 1988.  HOWEVER...ONE MUST BE VERY CAREFUL
BEFORE IT IS DECLARED A RECORD MINIMUM PRESSURE UNTIL A FULL AND
DETAILED CALIBRATION OF THE INSTRUMENTS AND CALCULATIONS IS
PERFORMED. SO PLEASE DO NOT JUMP INTO CONCLUSIONS YET...BE PATIENT.

The wind has shifted and is primarily from the South and south-west. We have been smelling foul odour for the last two days. The volcano’s gases are quite present. All day I had wondered what on earth was that smell even indoors! The western side of Antigua, usually calm, is quite rough. I just heard a few louds rolls of thunder to the north. Other than a few showers, there is not much to worry about here weatherwise.

Our prayers go out to the Gulf coast, it is almost like watching the movie “The day after tomorrow” but it is real!

Today is   typical summer weather....  already  very hot and  still.   Sea never got very  rough
from   PHILLIPE..and  it  is   quite calm  this morning along the  Atlantic.   It appears Philippe  will not  bring ill winds to anyone, thank goodness... with  RITA now  over
Florida...and thoughts  of all on her course.   Of course  we  are  watching  the  African coast and  those  waves  rolling off.

  This is ONE HURRICANE season
I will be  glad to see pass...and not soon enough.

So sorry to  see RITA on the doorstep of  Florida.... meanwhile... in our neck of the woods  it is  very hot  and  we are thankful Philippe is staying away...

5 AM EDT MON SEP 19 2005

..PHILIPPE PASSING EAST OF THE LEEWARD ISLANDS...

AT 5 AM EDT...0900Z...THE CENTER OF HURRICANE PHILIPPE WAS LOCATED
NEAR LATITUDE 17.1 NORTH... LONGITUDE 56.0 WEST OR ABOUT
385
MILES... 615 KM... EAST OF THE LEEWARD ISLANDS.

PHILIPPE IS MOVING TOWARD THE NORTH NEAR  7 MPH ...11 KM/HR...AND A
GENERALLY NORTH-NORTHWESTWARD MOTION IS EXPECTED DURING THE NEXT 24
HOURS.

MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR  75 MPH

Results for Antigua (17.12N, 61.78W):
The approximate Closest Point of Approach (CPA) is located near 19.7N, 57.8W or about 318.0 miles (511.8 km) from your location. The estimated time of when the eye will be at that location is in about 33.8 hours

ANTIGUA is  the  little  dot above  the "butterfly shape -  Guaduloupe...we are heavily overcast  off to the  Atlantic and had hard rain in the night on the  Atlantic side of the island... I think we will get more  rain as Phillipe passes

But thank goodness the hurricane is
moving NORTH  just to the east of us. A bit un-nerving to see it so close.
We are STILL WATCHING it however.   This is the  closest call we have had  this season.... but  the season is NOT OVER.

Looking out of our windows this morning, you would never guess that there is Hurricane PHILLIPE right off the Caribbean archipelago. There is a large “whitewall” sitauated to the East but the southern and western skies are beautiful blue.

I am going to sound like a stuck record but I keep reiterating about 85-90F surface water temperature. There are two large patches of warm water, one surrounding the archipelago and one surrounding Cuba.

Both storms are either on the edge or in the middle of these warm patches. I don’t think either FL or any US coast needs RITA right now. We will keep watching as I still don’t think this is the end of the season either L

Right now the clouds have passed and it is a beautiful sunny summer morning.

Rain always welcome.. but  hopefully  it wont bring us wind.  All closely watching this wave with the  Hurricane Centers comments... see below..
(I already did my last minute hurricane grocery  and gasoline run... not getting caught in any  long lines  IN CASE).

I hope the rest of the weekend remains like this. The sky is clear, brilliant blue, the harbour is as flat as glass although a little rippled as you look further out. It is going to be a hot one but I am sure the beachgoers will be happy to soak up some of it.

Not much development has taken place of the wave that is a bit too close for comfort. The weatherman says it will pass late Sunday or early Monday, hopefully at most a few gusts and some more rain. I am not sure if we need any more rain right now but at least it will cool the land down somewhat.

Do have a good weekend and the very best to all in the southern US doing the cleanup after Katrina.

- very warm water surronding the lesser antilles
  • From: "Alan Scholl" <scholla at candw.ag>
  • Date: Mon, 12 Sep 2005 07:55:53 -0400

There seems to be a large “warm water” belt surrounding the lesser Antilles. A similar warm water belt filled the Gulf of Mexico and this helped in causing the monster storm KATRINA to go from a Category 1 to 5 in less than 24 hours. There was a program on the DISCOVERY channel two Sundays ago discussing the layer of air between such warm water and the cloud tops. Scientists are studying this layer as it may fuel a storm more than the water itself. Although the air and water temperature would be relative.

Fortunately, there are no tropical waves nearby to capitalize on this warm water and I hope it stays that way. The water temperature map can be found at the bottom of this page http://stormcarib.com/goes.htm .

Today is a BEAUTIFUL day. It is going to be a scorcher for those who work outdoors. The sky is brilliant blue, white puffy cumulus clouds are floating by and the sea from my vantage point is very calm. I did observe though on Friday, there were large ground swells rolling in from the west, creating unusually big waves at Fort James beach.

Today is very hazy, seems like some more Sahara dust has crossed over the big pond. Wind is very light but should still be a good day for our guests.

In two days, it will be 10 years since our biggest disaster Hurricane LUIS. LUIS’ winds started just after 10PM on Monday, September 4th, then continued non-stop until Wednesday morning somewhere around 9:30AM. I have pictures of the aftermath should anyone want to remember those days or for those who didn’t experience it, would like to see what happened here in Antigua.

Finally go this  from family who had a house in Biloxi Mississippi.. very sad but least they  are  alive; so many people will be so  badly effected by this  terrible hurricane for  such a long time....  and still trying to find out about   2 family  members  who lived in New Orleans.
Too bad there is not  a  GERT SITE  for Mississippi now...

Unfortunatey they  lost their house and just about everything in it. They are about 13 feet above sea level and the storm surge there was close to 20 feet. They lost it all the house, the 2 - 2 bedroom cottages behind the house , the horse barn, etc.  ...they will bounce back but it'll be a while. This may be one of those rare events where the press reports are not exaggerated.

Learning of all of the  looting and  violence in New Orleans makes me proud of  ANTIUGA and how  this has not been  a problem for our island when we have been so badly  hit by hurricanes.

- KATRINA's destruction...
  • From: "Alan Scholl" <scholla at candw.ag>
  • Date: Wed, 31 Aug 2005 08:05:18 -0400

My heart goes out to all the people that are suffering in the wake of KATRINA. As mentioned in a previous post, the rapid development of the storm although alarming, was not surprising. The water surface temperature map for weeks had been indicating 85-90F which is quite warm. Hurricanes seem to either form or are attracted to such water especially in the Gulf of Mexico.

Looking at the current water temp maps, it almost looks as if warmer water has been flowing into the Gulf from these same areas that have been affected. Is this natural or man made warmer water flowing from the Mississippi into the Gulf?

What I would certainly hope that in the rebuilding process, the southern US seriously look at revamping their building codes. Many of the Caribbean countries that have been affected by hurricanes have revised and are stringent about building as we know what can happen.

Looking at some of the video of the damage, I am surprised that there wasn’t even more damage! Blocks are laid without overlap. There is little or no steel in these buildings, nor are there any reinforcing columns or ring beams. Some of the material used would not stand up in a Category 1 hurricane much more a 4 or 5! I might sound insensitive at this point but I am writing with the hope of emphasizing the revising and strict adherence to a better building code in hurricane prone areas. This might be the first of a string of 3 to 4 years where storms take aim at the same area. Let’s also not forget that this 2005 season may be far from being over.

Let’s all pray for the recovery of the southern US and wish them well in their recovery efforts.

First, I am no expert but I have always noticed one of the key indicators as to where a storm will either develop in the Gulf or gain strength is the water temperature maps on the front page of www.wundereground.com/tropical . KATRINA waltzed right into a patch of 85-90F water see attached picture. It was from this warm water she gained her sudden strength from Cat 1 to Cat 5. I was frankly amazed but not surprised.

TD 13 has popped up in the Atlantic but that does not seem to pose any threat to any land mass.

Weather is BEAUTIFUL in Antigua today, a few of us spent the day bar-b-que-ing on Rendezvous Bay yesterday, which was also had a gorgeous sunset with the Monsterrat volcano spewing as the sun went down.

I feel under a tropical gun of some sorts. The remnants of TD#10 seem to be forming back into something that we need to watch. This reminds of JEANNE last year that formed right on top of Antigua. When I got home from work that day, the clouds were all swirling in a circular motion above Antigua, I had never seen that before. Upon checking in, JEANNE had just been announced.

We will keep a watch on this one. Currently, the sky is blue and not many clouds around, I am sure this can change in a few hours.

Last night  around midnight off JUMBY BAY  (an island off Antigua)  a mother and baby dolphin stranded.... a dedicated few  fought to  save them, (see photo)    Sadly, the baby died... and finally after removing the baby from sight the mother swam off (after several attempts to beach herself again).   She had some  bad lesions on her so  we are hopeful for her  survival.   Thanks to  the  Marine Mammal Stranding Center in San Juan for  being in communication for over an hour to guide us  through the process of  the  rescue.    We hope we can  offer a  stranding course  on how to deal with  stranded marine mammals  in the  near future...  It was sad to lose the baby, but  happy the mother swam away alive...

We seem to be still suffering from the Sahara dust. It is very hazy and the sky in some places is white to varying shades of grey. There is a light breeze so it isn’t as hot outside but it is warm. I am watching TD#9 and another LOW that just puffed off the African coast. TD#9 should not pose any threat to the Caribbean but it is another “head count” for the season.

Take care everyone and have a blessed weekend.

At 11:00pm EDT, Emily was confirmed to have intensified to a Cat 1 hurricane. Martinique doppler radar did not show an eye however, but if the low level centre continues in a strengthening spree and remain under deep convection, an eye should be apparent in the visible imagery tomorrow. Emily has yet to pass over the windwards while the closest point of approach to Antigua would be at around 8:00-9:00 am tomorrow where the more notorious(where the stronger wind usually occur) north-eastern quadrant would 'probably' give us some more stormy weather. Grenada seems to take the brunt of this system(again...). I would give my best hope and extend my prayers to the peoples of the affected countries. All the best.

Embedded in deep easterlies flow from strong ridging to the north, Emily continues to shoot toward the west at near 20 mph. Here in Antigua, sun is shining bright with occasional cloudiness and showers. As Emily move pass the island chain well over 250 miles south of Antigua, we would be lucky to get some welcoming rain from this system, much less wind. But I cannot say the same for the Windward islands. Awaiting the next one behind, good-day.

Satellite imagery at 9:00pm EDT shows that convections associated with TD#5 have increased during the past 2-3 hours and became more concentrated near the center(mainly to the east). Though banding features were hard to observe on IR imageries, it is most evident to the south of the depression. Nevertheless, the increase in convection may indicate that the depression is organizing(and Emily is in the making) and NHC may declare an upgrade as early as 11:00pm tonight(though not necessarily).

I'm sure by now, all eyes on the east. Visible satellite imagery at 4:00pm EDT showed a slightly better organized depression than this morning although strong convections remained limited(not surprising as deep Atlantic at this time of July are usually bundled with dry air). Emily may be forming at this very moment. Let's hope for the best.

Barely 10 days into July and the 5th threat is looming. NHC outlook suggests that a possible depression may form in the central Atlantic during the next 24 hours or so. Although IR imagery showed a ragged feature of the tropical wave & low, latest QuikScat data indicate the presence of a closed surface circulation with 25 mph wind mainly in the northern semicircle region. With warm SST and light shear ahead of the system, it may very well be our next worry in the very near future. Good luck to all.

Antigua is  STILL GETTING RAIN RAIN...and it has been HOT AND HUMID... today has been very overcast and occasional rain showers...and  we had rain in the  night!   This is  SUCH an odd JUNE...  but we  are always thankful for the RAIN... makes our  gardens  BLOOM...and the wild life  flourish!
Many are  against Antigua being  PRO WHALING  as mentioned in backroom boys last posting....and there  has been much public outcry.  We hope MORE will  influence our government on this policy.
Watching for  the  WEATHER as  we  get into the summer!

This is the road I drive on most days.... and   pass these four large flamboyant trees (also called Poinciana and flame tree)   (demonic regia)  They  form a  magnificent canopy over the roadway.   In June and July, when these trees are in full bloom, with the dazzling bright red flowers covering the tree, it is a site to behold.  There are stories of visitors traveling to Antigua just to see these trees in their full glory.    The    tree is a native of Madagascar and is umbrella shaped and offers generous shade.   It blooms profusely   and then loses its leaves during the dry season, appearing to some to have died.   As soon as the rains come the tree is filled with new growth and eventually the glorious flowers again.    The seed pods are long (up to two feet) and when dry make a distinctive rattle.  This makes them popular as a musical instrument, locally called shack shacks (rattlers).   Come and  see this beautiful site on our magical island!

Antigua has been blessed with wonderful
rain for the weekend...-they reported over 3 inches -
 although some do not feel
so happy about it... it caused some serious problems in
parts of the island... in a couple of villages people  had to be
"rescued" as their homes were in low areas and this a.m. on the radio some of the schools are asking parents come and get  their children as there is flooding in some of the classes.  However for the water tables and  our  home water cisterns (filled from RAIN WATER) and the local islands ponds  ( they were drying out)  which support beautiful wild bird life   --the rain is  very welcome. It is sunny and beautiful this morning so seems we are back to our tropical weather!

We will be standing by  and watching

What a night!  Some wicked lightning and crazy thunder woke me up about 3:30 a.m. this morning.  The thunder shook the house and the lightning gave me some spectacular views of my neighborhood.  It is much calmer now but the skies are still overcast with a drizzle here and there.

We woke up this morning to some really heavy showers. It is nice to have some “blessings” I am sure the farmers and animals are all happy. It has been overcast for the last few days and still is very much.

All the mango trees are bearing and this is shaping up to be a mango lovers’ summer. The only danger is that “ole wives tale” says that we are due a hurricane when the mangoes and dates are in a good season.
