I do not want my email address posted:

We own a condo and home on 7 Mile Beach. Friends who waited out the storm in
Georgetown were trying to get back to our home but said West Bay Road was
under 4' of water. Fire Trucks were unable to get through. The Grand Caymanian's
first floor is gone. All the cars in their parking lots are gone - no where to
be found.
We have been advised that the entire infrastructure of the island is gone.
The airport runway is under water.

I am in San Diego, CA. My family lives on Grand Cayman. I don't have much
but my mother (Cherrylee Bush) did manage to get a call to me about 10:45 AM
(Cayman Time) on Monday 9/13/04. They have a newer home in the Shores
community of West Bay, Grand Cayman. She spoke for about 2 minutes before
the line went dead and communications ceased. She reported that their house
sustained some damage but they are all ok (Dexter, Derek, Farrah, Nicholas
and Codey Bush). They have a 2 story home.

I am hoping for information on other family members in West Bay.

The last communication we had received prior to my Mom's call came from my
Uncle Dwight Ebanks. He reported that one of his sister's (Glennis) and her
family was on their kitchen counters trying to stay dry. He said he was up
to his waist in sea water and sewage. He reported that the island was in
trouble and needed help.

If anyone has information on West Bay it would be appreciated. My email is
Derrilee@hotmail.com.

Thanks.

I spoke to my mom last nigt at around 11:30 pm. She said that our house
had taken a beating. The roof had caved in in one of the rooms. The
fence around our house was badly damaged, out garage door had broken off,
and the windows were blown in.
There are about 5 or 6 of us here in Texas who are students attending
College and have not been able to reach their parents or family members,
I have been lucky that I have been able to speak to my parents. We have
been listening to the weather channel and they say nothing about the
Cayman Island and the extent of the damage...We are all relying on ya'lls
information on this website and other websites.

Our Prayers are with the our people on the Island and we hope and pray
for the best.

I just spoke with Romel Coe, chief engineer at Treasure Island Resort.  The roofs and structure held; all guests and employees there are safe.  Although efforts were made to get all guests to evacuate, a number decided to stay in Cayman.  There was storm surge to several feet in depth through the hotel and there is damage to the lobby and night club.  All guests have food and water.  The power and phones are out but a few Cable and Wireless cell phones are still working.  Generators are working and guests should be fine until transportation off the Island has been arranged.  Descriptions of the event and the damage to the Island are horrific.  Many buildings are ruined, autos have been flooded, and power and phones will take a while to restore.

Thanks for hosting this it has been a great help.

Regards,

Jeffrey C Coyne

This is William Boley in Montana.  I just talked to my son in Cayman Brac on the telephone.  He (Lance Boley), Kathleen Boley and Carol Busby have now left the cave on the south side of the island and returned home.  All roads in their vicinity are clear, the power is on (except for some isolated homes on the south side) and they have water.  Except for the docks on the south side only minor damage was observed.  Most of the docks are either missing or badly damaged from the high seas. These is some minor water damage but other wise all are all right.  They have not heard of any structural damage or personal injury.  Regards WilliamBoley

just got a report from a friend whose aunt was driving to check on people
in East End. They were coming from the West Bay area and managed to get
cellular service in George Town. They said the water on the runway was
receeding and there was quite a bit of structural damage in downtown
George Town. They were on the Crewe Road when the call was recieved.
That is all i know. So the roads are becoming passable. Thank
goodness. if i hear of anymore i will let u know.

Vienna Circle area in South Sound is in bad shape. David Ritch's home lost a
few roof tiles and has extensive indoor water damage from flooding. The
Baraud's home was also flooded, they were sitting on their countertops. Area
is very low-lying, and although it is a well-constructed neighborhood the storm
surge caused the most damage. No amount of careful structural configuration
can stop water. Our office building, Queensgate house has lost most of it's
roof. Will report more as the phones are restored

- A little good news on Ivan
  • From: "Jody A. Flaws" <jflaws AT columbusavenue.com>
  • Date: Mon, 13 Sep 2004 13:38:00 -0400

Just talked to Gemma Mah, everyone is okay.  Jarad Blake came by her place and he said Jenny and Brett Franklin are fine as well, as far as she knows everyone that went to KPMG building, UBS building are okay.

Cell phones are sporadically working so even people on the island can’t talk to each other.  Roads are blocked with Debris but when she went for a drive (amazingly Lori’s car is working) what she could see is just terrible, Marriot, Hyatt and Westin are all missing parts of their roofs, homes are damaged everywhere.  G$ lost ½ the roof on her house, Bergman lost everything from her room and G$ lost most of her stuff, it’s open daylight in the their house right now.  With the hotel’s damaged there is no place for anyone to go.  They are hoping to have water in the next day or so but power looks like it could be weeks before it is restored, the few power lines that weren’t blown down have been stripped and only the pole itself remains.  The IsIander has collapsed, the building next to the lone star collapsed, it’s sounds like the island is toast.

The good news is as far as we can tell all our friends are alive and well.  I’ll keep you posted but as cell phone batteries are dying it will likely be hard to get many details or contact anyone for some time.

I’m going to post this e-mail to the web site www.stormcarib.com, it seems to be the best source of info at this time.  Please forward this info to anyone I’ve missed above.

I have just had the following information sent to me from the offices of
Appleby Spurling Hunter...
-----------------

I was in contact with Huw Moses (Office Managing Partner) at midnight on
Saturday but shortly thereafter, contact with the Island ceased and I have
not been able to contact him directly since that time. However, he has been
able to reach his father in the UK using his cell phone but no one is able
to contact him. I have just spoken to Huw^Òs father who had just finished
speaking to Huw in the Cayman Office. A summary of the damage to the Island
and the office is as follows:

    * There has been extensive water damage to the interior of our office
(Clifton House) in The Cayman Islands.
    * Interior ceilings have fallen down due to water coming in from the
roof.
    * Many windows have been blown in by the force of the wind with
consequential water damage .
    * The basement of the building has been flooded.
    * There is no electricity in the building.
    * They now have very little water in the building.
    * They have not had a chance to fully assess the damage to equipment and
furniture as yet.
    * At present, they have approximately 50 people taking shelter in the
building together with 12 dogs 3 cats and one hamster !
    * Many of the buildings and houses in the surrounding area have been
extensively damaged^Åsome have been totally destroyed.
    * There is still widespread flooding and waves (15 to 20 feet high)
continue to sweep into the harbour and across the road into the town.
    * The airport has been extensively damaged and the runway is
unserviceable. Apparently, there is only one clear spot on the runway that
will accommodate helicopters only.
    * Current estimates are that 50 to 60% of buildings and homes on the
Islands have sustained damage.
    * Huw anticipates that they will have power in two to three days
although they may be lucky and have it sooner as they are near the hospital
and are on the same line.

Just talked to Linton Tibbitts, owner of Cox Lumber Co. of Florida and Grand Cayman. He is in regular communications with his brother in Cayman Brac. Everyone on the sister islands are safe. Most damage to the Brac was on the South Coast, erosion of the road, etc. Power is on. Airport expecting a Cayman Air plane in today at approx. 2pm. Little Cayman had some homes damaged or lost. Particularly mentioned were Bruce Eldimere's house, a total loss, and what locals call the Splash House near the dock, heavily damaged. The Little Cayman Church is fine. Of course, private docks on both islands I understand are gone. At this hour, still very high wave action. Will update when I have more.

I just got a phone call from Roger Bodden, on Prospect Drive in Prospect.
HE and his family, and several neighbors and friends that rode the storm out on the second floor of his new home ... are all alive and safe.
Roger told me that  the water rose about 7ft over the street level, and that would be along the canal that goes thru that area to the sound.
He said that there has come word to him that there are deaths.
I wish I had more specifics, but there are none yet.
I am sorry to leave it at that.
Let us pray that its just a rumor.
I am just so  grateful, thankful, that my friend roger is alive, as well as all the people he knows.
I will join you in prayer for your friends and family, as well as all Caymanians and guests and expats.
Hear our prayer Almighty God
Amen.
Roger sounded exhausted.
Like he was on his last reserve of energy
He could not talk long, as there is no power and little prospect of being able to charge his phone up soon.
He said they still have over one foot of water flooding their first floor.
They are all very, very weary, and hungry, and wet, and that crabs and critters are up into everything.
He even had several birds taking cover in their garage.
Cars and trucks are gone or damaged beyond use.
Trees are all gone, and debris is everywhere, he repeated the word everywhere.
He said he will send more reports, but with the damage, and the power problems, it may be some time.

I am sorry if this report does not answer your questions about your loved ones.
I am sorry.
Bless them, bless them all.

Hey Gert --

My brother's fortunately been in Ireland for the past week and hasn't had to
take the brunt of this terrible storm -- Dan's a divemaster at Ocean
Frontiers on the East End, so if anyone is a faithful follower of the OF
crew, let me assure you that he's safe. I don't know about the rest of the
crew (Fraser, Mo, etc.) He's been able to get in contact with some people
on the island and here's what he had to say:

"I am sitting in Ft. Lauderdale at a Kinko's computer with shudders running
down my spine. The reports from Grand Cayman are starting to come in and I
have to say that it looks like the storm has caused catastrophic damage to
the island. Most reports I have read say that roads are under 3-5 feet of
water, cars are "floating" down the main streets. The airport runway is
under 3 feet of water and there are mixed reports about whether the terminal
building is even there...this is extremely worrisome because the airport is
considered to be one of the Hurricane shelters.....it had to be evacuated.
Stories of coconuts flying off trees and blowing thru windows.....roofs
peeling off like they were held on by Velcro.....I haven't heard any reports
about my house...luckily it is on the second floor so the 20-25 foot waves
shouldn't reach it, but the winds...sustained at over 155 mph, although
there were gusts reported to reach 200 mph this morning, have me worried
that the roof didn't survive."

Our prayers continue to go out to the island...looks like the 5 day path has
it still as a depression-force storm by the time it rolls through
Indiana....boy, that would be a story to tell the kids. :)

I have just spoken to my sister, Sara McKay, who lives close to George Town
on Grand Cayman.

The wind has, literally, just died down and the rain is stopping.

She is about a miles inland and yet experienced sea surges outside of her
front door. The entire ground floor of her house flooded and her two cars
floated off, although one has now floated back!

Ivan was with them for 24 hours and, on more than one occasion, she thought
that she wouldn't make it. Her husband, Dave, who managed Eden Rock Dive
School, has had the wetsuits and scuba gear on emergency standby and they
were about 5 minutes from putting it all on.

>From what they can see, there is total devastation and Sara doesn't think
that they will get out off the house for at least a couple of days.

Hope everyone else is safe and I would like to reiterate the BBC's
disgraceful Ivan coverage in the UK. It is as if Cayman doesn't exist. They
harp on about Cuba and Florida whereas no mention of a British Colony that
has been wrecked. Sky News has been better with the head of Police on every
hour although there hasn't actually been much to report as he was trapped
inside his HQ.

Best wishes to all concerned.

Gert,

Great website, very informative, thanks for all your efforts thus far.

I just spoke to my wife at 1 am Cayman time Monday morning.  She is in a condo at Garden or Coco retreat with staff and friends of the Smile Dental Clinic owned by Bert Thacker.  Everyone is ok there, and the roofs have held on to the condos in this newer development, but they experienced severe flooding in the first floor of the condos and the parking lot.  It sounds like most of the vehicles were under water during the worst of the storm.

Also sounds like the damage is extensive, and that other building in the area were not so fortunate, but the details are sketchy, so I will go no further with that.

Specifically, for Bert, Christine and Brad, if you get this, everyone is ok from your office, as is Mike and Barty.  Christine and Ant checked in as being ok as well according to Jen.

Our thoughts from up here in Canada are with everyone in Grand Cayman.

Best regards,

I'm not to sure how to relay this so I will just spit it out...I just spoke
to my mother about a half hour ago (1:30 a.m est)...
From what I understand the Cayman that I
know and that many others know may no longer be there when we return...Cable
and Wireless is aparently attempting to get all the cell towers operational
as the land line infrastructure is too badly damaged...and pretty much the
entire island is underwater...I've also heard report that Cayman Airways
may start flying into the island as early as tuesday depending on the
airport situation but the flight will be limited to Caymanians and or
residents...I have so much more info but am to shell shocked to spit it all
out...Pray for our islands

My mother, Elsa Cummings was finally able to get through to me in San
Francisco on her cell phone from Grand Cayman. It's 10:14 pm pacific
time, Sunday, September 12, 2004. She says that her home in Newlands
is flooded with 3 to 6 inches of water and there is no place to go. It
reminded her of stories she'd been told about the '32 hurricane -- when
the North Sound and the Atlantic meet in Newlands. The roof of the
International College of the Cayman Islands has been ripped off and the
story is similar at many of the homes around her. But so far, no word
of any casualties.

Cell service is again sporadic, but they are essentially trapped in the
district and their homes and aren't sure what is going on elsewhere.

Gert,

Not sure how to post this.

I am a former 21-year resident of the Cayman Islands.  My son, Nick Nowak still lives there and at 9:30 p.m. PDT he phoned his fiance to let her know he was safe.  He is staying at the home of a friend near the Grand Old House (but further inland).

He said the experience was unbelievable and that currently the ground floor is in about 3-feet of water.  He also said when he looked outside earlier today, all he could see was the tops of cars, water everywhere and pieces of homes and things like washing machines floating in the water.  The high water shorted out many of the car alarms and he said they were going off in numbers earlier today.  He was lucky that the roof of the home stayed intact, although at times they thought they would lose it.  They did have one window break, but managed to close off that room and kept much of the water out.

He said the island is really a disaster area, but I am thankful to God that he is safe!!!!!!  That's all that matters.  Everything else can be replaced eventually.

God bless you all for your postings - it kept my mind occupied while I waited for news from Nick.

To all my good friends in Cayman....Maxine & Lewie Hydes, Jackie & Peter Balls, the entire Kirkconnell Family, Ben and Mary Gillooly, Debbie & Peter van der Bol, Kim and Rodney Watler, James Mason and Teresa Grimes, JC Calhoun, Reid and Dorothy Dennis, Alberto Estovanovich, Debbie and Tom Guyton, Barbara Levey and Ed Powers, Derek and Marguerite Wight, and my ex-husband George Nowak and his wife Regina, my church family at St. Ignatius and to everyone on Grand Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac....I pray that you've all survived the storm and are safe and that your homes have weathered the storm.

With love & prayers,

Geri (Nowak) Centonze

The CYB residents extend their thoughts and prayers for everyone on GCM.  Our shelters are all fully operational with standby generators and a community sense of volunteer support.  Down trees and flooding on the Southside is being assessed.

CBP&L is rapidly restoring power, with many businesses and homes already restored.  With the protection of the bluff the BIC DR centre maintained 24x7 operations and was not directly affected by the storm.  They are now working to support their GCM customers as they exercise their disaster recovery plans.

Been reading about the hurricane on your website and saw that you wanted to
hear from people.

My twin sister lives on the West side of the island about a block from the
beach & the roof of her condo was ripped off this afternoon around 1:30pm and
it was flooded so they had to use the 'bedsheet' method to evacuate. She was
able to also evacuate her yellow lab.

I haven't a clue where she is bunkered down now, but that was what we heard
last.

She works at the women's shelter on the island and was to work the weekend but
was evacuated from there last evening as it was deemed unsafe & thought she
would be ok in her apt. but that wasn't the case.

Her boyfriend runs a boat charter business and was doing his last check on the
boat yesterday.

I'll email you later if I hear anything further.

Great website!

I spoke to my mother who resides off eastern avenue (George Town Courts).....................the sound of the weather is very distressing.  coconuts are flying off near by trees and hitting against her two story house.  Plywood boards are literally peeling off the windows and flying away in the wind.  I heard a crashing noise and it was coconuts lodging into her French door upstairs.

A lot of flooding is also occurring at this time.  I have not been successful in making contact since around 12:00 noon this morning.  I heard a few people calling in to channel 4 (Miami,Florida) from Grand Cayman..............thanks to Craig Merren I finally got some specific news...................as most channels are not being as informative as I hoped.

I pray for the lives of my family, friends and all the people in the Cayman Islands.  May God be merciful and protect you all.

Sincerely,

By the way... the center of the storm is moving away to the west (instead
of north-west)... Ivan seems to have a mind of its own and doesn't follow
the National Hurricane Center's forecasted track... See the latest loop
at http://stormcarib.com/mysat.htm

The reason why cell phone communications seems to be down at this time is
most probably due to the fact that the networks is heavily overloaded...

Subject: Ivan in Cayman

I am writing from Ottawa Canada, and for the past 24 hrs I have been in
constant contact (every hour or so)with those in Butterfield house in
george town. They are all safe although witnessing intense
devastation/destruction outside. Roofs are flying off bldgs downtown,
windows of the Tower bldg are smashed in, roof and doors of bank of
America bldg are damaged or gone. At times it has been hard for them to
see the bank of America bldg which is only a few feet across the street.
Trees are blowing around, and bits of bldg are flying through the air.
I was told that what they are watching is far worse than anything ever
shown on tv either on the news i.e. Frances, or a Hollywood creation.
Wind is very strong and rattling the windows. The roof of butterfield
house is giving out and they are forced to stay on the ground floor
although water is now coming down the elevator shaft. Phone service is
intermittent, and they have been able to get occasional calls out via
cell phone. Although as the storm progresses it is harder and harder to
make and maintain contact. I have also heard reports of intense
flooding of canals from North Sound. The hospital has flooded and
everyone is on the second floor and sadly their generator is no longer
working. A few hours ago (prior to the worst part of the storm
hitting,) it was reported that cars along southsound road were
"floating" and that the sea was coming under the door of houses located
on the beach.
I am a resident of grand cayman, and all reports are intensely
upsetting. I can't imagine what it is like for those who are in the
middle of it. I hope that everyone remains safe, we are all thinking
about everyone in Cayman.

- Citrus Grove Building
  • From: "Stu Watson" <stuarthw AT hotmail.com>
  • Date: Sun, 12 Sep 2004 20:39:10 +0100

Update from Windsor (uk) 19:00 GMT approx 14:00 local Cayman.

I just spoke to my brother Simon who is safe in the fourth floor building at Citrus Grove. Apparently this building has fared better than others.

There is some flooding but the emergency power (in citrus grove) is working, windows are intact the roof is in place and residents are well prepared.

He was astonished (and pleased) to see the cell phone network operating. Other buildings such as KPMG have sadly lost part of their roofs.

From information gleaned by phoning friends in parts of the island he is very fearful of loss of life.

Apparently neighbours who stayed in their home near one of the canals have experienced loss of their roof and 4 ft floods in the ground floor.

The new met forecast I have indicates

                   TEMPO 0024 1000 TSRA SCT016CB
            BECMG 0405 020V340120G135KT 3000 OVC018 BECMG
            1516 270V220110G125KT

Basically this means 135 knot (or 155mph) winds will continue until early evening local Cayman time.

Prayers and thoughts to everyone affected.  Those of us in the uk who love the islands and have relatives and friends there are shocked and horrified by todays events.

Regards

Stuart Watson

By Gretchen Allen

HOUSTON (AP) – Reports out of Grand Cayman, which has been furiously pummeled by category 4 Hurricane Ivan overnight and throughout Sunday morning, via internet and telephone, reveal a picture of grim devastation.

So far, Ivan has caused the deaths of some 56 people in the Caribbean on its deadly rampage from the Lesser Antilles, across Grenada, on to Jamaica and now Cayman.

Yesterday the Governor of the Cayman Islands, Mr. Bruce Dinwiddy, declared a State of Emergency.

At 2 p.m. Sunday, the Weather Channel reported that the island had been lashed by winds in excess of 200 mph.

Ivan was 60 miles west of Grand Cayman, traveling to the west at 10 mph, according to a National Hurricane Center Advisory.

There are unconfirmed reports that part of the capital, George Town, is “gone”, that roofs are blowing around in the streets of George Town, and that the hospital has been badly damaged, or is possibly also “gone”.

Two British ships are reported to be 250 miles behind Ivan, waiting to come into port to come to Cayman’s aid. The Cayman Islands are a British Overseas Territory (colony).

Vehicles in flood-prone areas have are said to have “just disappeared”.

There is two feet of water at Owen Roberts International Airport.

Hurricane shelters on island are full to capacity.

An estimated 80 percent of the roof of Queensgate House, a waterfront commercial office building on the south side of the capital overlooking the harbour, has been blown off.

“It’s as bad as it can possibly get,” Justin Uzzell, 35, told the Associated Press by telephone about noon Houston time on Sunday, also noon Cayman time (Houston is on Daylight Savings Time, Cayman is not) from his fifth-floor refuge in the Citrus Grove Building downtown. “It’s a horizontal blizzard,” he described, saying he could see no further than the parking lot of the adjacent building. “The air is just foam. It’s a white wall. We’re being buffeted badly”.

At the Marriott Resort on Cayman’s famed Seven Mile Beach, its prime tourism product, windows were blown out of the 300+ room facility, and the cars in the parking lot had water up to their rooftops. Children of guests were said to be “going bonkers” from being “cooped up”.

“A catastrophe”, was how one landlord described the residential area of Crewe Road in George Town.

The island has been without electricity since Saturday evening and phone service is often impossible. Cell phone batteries are wearing down or are spent.

Canal-front developments, such as Governor’s Harbour and Snug Harbour, are flooded.

The Hyatt Britannia Resort’s canal which flows into the North Sound has overflowed due to the storm surge, and the Britannia Villas are flooded inside, as is the golf course. Cars there are under water.

At 12:50 p.m. “winds are fiercer than ever”, reported one Cayman resident on the website stormcarib.com, which featured many posting from people seeking information on their loved ones.

Here in Houston, some 125 evacuees who arrived from Grand Cayman Friday afternoon on a special charter flight hired by Cayman-based Dart Management Ltd. to bring its employee resources to safety, were worried and frustrated at not being able to get through by cell phone, hearing “all circuits are currently busy”. They continue to try to reach friends and relatives in their storm-tossed country.

Although the eye of the storm is now 60 miles southwest of the coast of Grand Cayman, Ivan’s hurricane-force winds (155 mph, with gusts to 190 mph) extend out 90 miles from the storm’s center, and it is presently moving west-northwest at 10 mph. Tropical storm-force winds extend out 120 miles. That means Grand Cayman is in for hours more of continued bashing.

The three Cayman Islands – Cayman Brac, Little Cayman, and Grand Cayman, 90 miles to the southeast of the Sister Islands – are home to about 45,000 people with well over 90 percent of them residing in Grand Cayman.

Flood waters were threatening the integrity of the Allista Towers Building in George Town.

There were unconfirmed reports that the roof had blown off the Kirk Servistar Home Center on Eastern Avenue.

Cars in the area of Cayman’s airport are said to have “floated off down the road”.

There were reports of 135-mile-an-hour winds out of the northeast over the last two hours.

Winds were so strong around noon on Saturday that “trees were bending down to the ground” along the West Bay Road, the island’s main road and tourist strip which runs parallel to Seven Mile Beach.

There is no radio service, leaving residents in the dark as to when and where the storm is going.

At midday people who sought shelter in the Walkers Building in the center of town were said to be okay.

Communiques from the Citrus Grove Building also said people seeking shelter there were safe.

The Huntlaw Building in the same area had its roof torn off around 8 a.m.

If Hurricane Ivan, which is reported to be developing a concentric (second) eye wall, winds increase by just one mile an hour, it will again be classed as a category 5 storm.

It is kicking up waves 15 – 25 feet, or two stories high. Cayman is experiencing 8 – 12-inches of rain.

According to the Weather Channel, Hurricane Ivan is the sixth strongest hurricane in the Atlantic basin in recorded history.

It is taking a track similar to that of Hurricanes Charley and Gilbert, which visited Cayman in 1988, and has been called the “son of Gilbert”.

At noon Cayman time, Ivan’s coordinates were 19 N., 81.5 W., with wind gusts to 190mph.

“The wind is howling and there are no leaves left on any of the trees,” Perry Garrison told his wife, Shruty, in Houston by phone from Cayman.

I have just spoken to my brother and sister-in-law at the Community College (2.00 p.m. Trinidad time, which is one hour ahead of the Cayman time).  They have made it through a terrifying night but they and others there are safe.  There has been some damage to the building from trees falling on the building and window panes being blown out but no one is hurt, they are all dry and the building is holding up well, all things considered.  The winds are not as strong as they were at midnight but they are still forceful.  The concerns of some of those at the shelter centre around whether they will have homes to return to but they are grateful that they are safe at present.

My sister, Donna Sjostrom, from the Prospect/Omega Bay area just called
on her cell phone to let me know she was okay and the house is still
intact, although roof leaking and some water on floor. They have no
leaves on any bush or tree they can see. The canal rose 8’ or more
depositing their boats on the dock. The winds now are gusting 80-90 mph
and still raining.
Of course they have no phone, power or water, but cell phones work
intermittently.
(In case you want to get more info, Donna’s cell is 345-916-**** &
David’s is 345-928-****.) Sometimes they can reach the states, but are
having problems with Island reception.
I will call her in about an hour and will report any changes.

From Gillian in Barbados - Spoke to Susan Conolly this morning at around 9a.m. Cayman time  - on the canal on the road to the yacht club - for the life of me I can't remember its name - things are very rough - at that time there was muddy at least a foot of water in her ground floor and rising and water coming through the ceiling.  There's bad water flooding in her yard  - in her words - you could surf in her yard!! - with the water level at the front of her house reaching the front windscreen of a Jeep Grand Cherokee.  Very high winds but they are OK.  The house is a wreck but the roof was still on.  It is very hard to get through as international lines are busy most of the time.  Haven't reached my other great friends - Janet Hislop - in West Bay, Sheena Conolly - at East End with her in-laws (left her a voicemail)  and Rosh Cater.  Please take care of the flood water as it will be contaminated.  I am praying so hard for you all and send my love to you all and the kids.  Please be safe.

Entirety of most recent update at:
http://www.caymannetnews.com/2004/09/738/damage.shtml

(see http://www.caymannetnews.com also, for a wealth of info and official
reports)

At the offices of Cayman Net News, at the time of filing this report,
flood water was rising several inches above the foot of the doors and
threatening to breach the integrity of the building. The entire office is
currently at risk of being i! nundated with at least 4 to 5 inches of
floodwater.

The hurricane force winds have torn roofs off and reportedly devastated
homes, even in affluent, well-constructed neighbourhoods.

Vehicles parked in flood-prone areas are said to have ^just
disappeared.^

With many buildings, both residential and commercial, utilising septic
tank waste treatment systems, the widespread flooding is resulting in
serious health and sanitation concerns as overflowing sewage becomes
mixed with the flood waters.

According to the National Hurricane Service in Miami, at 8 am EDT the eye
of Hurricane Ivan was about 35 miles south of Grand Cayman, but hurricane
force winds extended for about 90 miles from the centre of the storm.

A Hurricane Hotline spokesman in Grand Cayman said the eye was expected
to ^brush^ Grand Cayman but not pass across the island.

All three islands are currently without any electricity, while water
supplies were shut down Saturday nig! ht for fear of contamination from
broken mains.

Information for our friends in Little Cayman.  We have been in touch with the island at 9pm CDT.  Waves on the South Coast are very large, approx. 15' to 20'.  Winds in the 45 mph range.  Virtually no rain squalls yet.  Can confirm however, ALL docks are gone.  Everyone is safe and feeling confident.  Hurricane shelter has TV, food, drinks and cots.  Hope this information helps.  We also have a home there, on the NE coast.  We are praying for all.

They fear the worst is still to come. No one can go outside at the
moment. Northside and east end are taking a beating. Reports of debris
on the road and downed power lines. The eye is reported to pass 3 miles
east of the airport around 7AM. There is also a report that the door has
blown off the shelter in Northside. Battering wind and waves up to 2

Joan here from Provo TCI. Just spoke to my cousin Val in Grand Cayman. She has
just left her ground floor apartment near Georgetown to go to her workplace on
Eastern Ave. which is second level. She says at the moment they are just
playing a waiting game. Wishing it would hurry up and come and go. They have no
power where she is. Also spoke with some friends in West Bay. They still have
power and TV and are in very good spirits....but that could be of the alcoholic
kind!! They all say that the wind and rain are really starting to pick up but
the worst is not supposed to come until dawn or thereabouts. I have a some cell
numbers so I will call sporadically (so they can save battery power) and try to
get updates.

- IVAN is bearing down on Grand Cayman

It is 3 am Sunday.

We are at the Cable & Wireless One Technology Square ( OTS ) in Georgetown.

Cable and Wireless has been very humanitarian to accept all persons who arrive at the door.  I think many people were hoping for the best, but when the severity of the storm became noticable, they smartly went in search for the safest shelter.

There are hundreds of us here shacked up in the uncomplete building (it is still under construction).  But, as a newly constructed hurricane 5 rated building,  we are all thankful that we are here, and not anywhere else on the island.

The wind and rain has gathered strength, so even the smokers are re-considering going outside for a puff.  Everything is shaking and bending to the wind.
We can not go outside anymore, as the rain and wind is too strong.

We do not know the speed of the wind, but we expect the EYE to hit in the next  6 hours.  This is a VERY dangerous storm, and we are all praying for the best.

At daylight photos will follow.

David.

Wind is now hitting 7 mile beach at about 35-40 mph and there are some scattered showers. The eye is predicted to pass over us at 6 or 7 am tomorrow with hurricane force winds reaching us by 2am.

I am luckily on a generator, and Cable and Wireless internet is still up, so I can continue to let everyone know whats happening in this area.

Lets hope by the time we wake up tomorrow the storm has shifted west although I think its a little late for a reprieve.

Good luck to all in the Caymans and thanks to everybody, from around the world who has emailed and left messages on the board, for the support.

I'm unable to report personally because the pesticides for mosquito control
sent me to the emergency room, were found by the lab to have been absorbed
in my body in huge quantities, and forced me to leave.

We just talked to our friends on the Northside.

They reported terrible weather and storm force winds, but no serious damage.
Let's hope it stays that way (no damage that is).

The waves were moving sideways. They'd had a power outage, but power had
been restored. Our friends were still able to walk their dogs.

They reported that some people had not boarded up their homes, some had only
partially boarded up. There had been no evacuation.

Rather than split up the group of people from the sister islands, they have decided to brave it out together and are not evacuating from their present location. This message is not to worry anyone that knows the group, I just don’t want you to think they are safe with me if I am able to keep posting. I will only have one person and 2 cats from that group. We are busy doing what we can like putting photos in the dryer and trying to find the safest place in the house for us. Water was shut off about an hour ago but we still have power – lights flickering right now though.

This will probably be my last update.

We still have power but it has gone out once.

I have spoken to people from all ends of Grand Cayman. Waves have been
reported at 15 ft! And the fiery of Ivan has yet to come!

The winds are picking up, and it is raining in spurts. All we can do is sit
and wait and wonder what Ivan has in store for us. He seems to have a mind
of his own!

I have been bombarded with e-mails from all over the world sending their
prayers and wishing us the best....Thank you to all of you!

To all of you in GC, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman....Be safe.

May God be with us.......Nicole

Winds on South Side gusting 60-70, waves running at 15-20', South Side Road
is flooded (by waves) and strewn with rocks and coral, half way along South
Side.

Power is off (at least on North Side - Stake Bay area) and we are now on
Stand By Power.

Dark, windy & raining. Most people here are breathing a little easier at the
moment but it is all tinged with major anxiety for friends, family members
and business colleagues - everyone - in Grand Cayman

I will limit my posts as those in Grand Cayman may have more need - our
thoughts and wishes are with all of you in the Big Island and we all hope
that you ride IVAN out safe and sound.

- local news update for Cayman Islands
  • From: "Joyce Cantlay" <joymar AT candw.ky>
  • Date: Sat, 11 Sep 2004 18:39:29 -0500

Last news report gives the following details:

Live report from Cayman Brac indicates power still on, winds in high 70s (although the prediction is for max. winds of 56 mph?), South Coast Road unpassable due to sea water in 3 places. Apparently the Divi dock is gone.

The news from Little Cayman is that they are already experiencing hurricane force winds of approx. 70mph and slightly higher. Other than some water and debris on the roads everyone is fine although there are still a few in private homes that we cannot report on. All the others are at the shelter and are fine.

Hurricane force winds are expected to begin at approx. 2AM Sunday morning on Grand Cayman (we are already experience T.S. force winds) with the max. winds at 165 mph expected at 6AM. Then the eye should pass over us around 7AM and hurricane force winds will continue until approx. 11AM. That period is meant to be the worst for us here. The storms is moving so slowly at 9mph and the times keeps changing to later!

All three islands will continue to experience T.S. winds until later Sunday afternoon but for now the worst should be over by noon Sunday. We are getting impatient yet hope that somehow the storm will move away before it gets any closer. Right now the eye is predicted to come within 8 miles of us.

The refugees have not shown up yet – they are still deciding on who should go where and when!

I am away from home but have been speaking on the phone to Grand Cayman
all day. It has often been difficult to get through. Everyone has
prepared for the worst. At 530PM, there were 20 foot seas in South Sound
but they were breaking early and away from shore. There have been
intermitiant bands of wind and rain. All the flights are already
cancelled. There is one AA flight scheduled to GC for noon on Monday, but
they predict that will be the first and only fight before Miaimi airport
shuts down. If I hear more I will let pass it on.

- Quick update
  • From: "Joyce Cantlay" <joymar AT candw.ky>
  • Date: Sat, 11 Sep 2004 17:44:07 -0500

Power has been restored on most of the island for now. Outage due to fallen trees. The Governor has now declared a state of emergency. No panic yet but this does give law enforcement special powers in need, curfews etc.

The saga continues for the souls who evacuated from the Brac and Little Cayman on Thursday and Friday. Many were in hotels and 3 were here. They were evacuated from one hotel to another this afternoon and have now been told they must be evacuated to shelters. Many came by boat with pets so they are headed to my place. One couple has a baby only a few days old. We will take in as many as we can reasonably cope with, in particular those with pets who cannot go to a shelter. We have taken whatever precautions we could. The new animal shelter is now open! At least lots of water for now and lots of people with first aid training! Yeah those dive instructors!

Raining reasonably hard and windy but nothing drastic yet. Great to have power again!

Moved locations since the last update from me.

We are now in a more secure building that will hopefully withstand the
insanity that is a Cat 5 hurricane.

Just heard the governor on the radio declare a state of emergency for Grand
Cayman. That certainly doesn't happen often!

I assume thats because Ivan has strengthend back to a Cat 5 and the fact that
the eye is now predicted to pass directly over us instead of 30 miles away.

Luckily we still have 18 hours to expect the eye and things can change for the
better. Hopefully it will decrease in strength and move more west and miss us.

I'll try keep you all updated from 7 mile beach area.

My, my, my.......the waves over here on the South side are amazing....there is beauty in them....when we get storms like this....however, the beauty of a raging sea is so dangerous. The wave heights now are about 15'...they are kicking in a big way...kinda scary they are at that level so early before the actual storm hits us in the wee hour. So appreciative to all who have emailed, if I havent gotten back to you, no worries, it is just due to packing the car for leaving later, or some sort of preparation! would love to post some photos, not sure i can thou. We'll see. still waiting out till the power goes out, we will move at that point. Have packed the car with all put the coolers & kids and it will be lickity splil with that! Brief rains come and go, we are totally overcast but still in daylight. There have been reported power outages one in prospect due to a downed tree on the lines, CUC is the eye is expected to to arrive in 18 hours and will be 8 miles away...that my friends is in the catastrophic range.  WE have been very blessed over the years to have escaped these storms...God be with us now!  A Cat 5 storm is frightening for all of us. Well, i better send this before the power goes out...stay tuned  sheeting rain is upon us as i write!

I am located in the middle of Grand Cayman, nearer to the North Sound. The
winds are still not very strong and it is raining only a little where I am.
I have talked to friends who are now without power, but CUC has still not
turned the power off. We still have power and have not lost it once. I
don't know for how much longer though.

I see that Ivan is now a category 5, with winds reaching 165+. A very scary
thought. Cayman is a flat island and my fear is of very high waves. All we
can do is sit and wait.

I will try and post one more update in an hour.

The rain has begun.....I am upstairs the windows are boarded but the wind
still sounds so strong!
And this is just the outskirts of Ivan's wrath. I am looking at the
satellite maps and it doesn't look too good!

However, by the grace of God the eye went around Jamaica and not directly
over like predicted. And I know God's hands will be on us too!

I have heard we will only have electricity a couple more hours and I hear
the water will be off shortly. All of our tubs are filled with water.

I have asked my father in California to post reports after we lose
electricity. I will try and keep in touch with him via cell phones.

I pray for all of us on our three lovely islands.....The grace of God is

- Cayman update
  • From: "Joyce Cantlay" <joymar AT candw.ky>
  • Date: Sat, 11 Sep 2004 14:56:17 -0500

The last (local radio) news info is that Cayman Brac is expecting max. winds of 65 mph around 7AM Sunday and Little Cayman max 75 mph around 9AM Sunday. On Grand Cayman thus far max. winds expected are 75 mph if the storm does not move any closer than the present 33 miles predicted. Things will really start to pick up around midnight here. The latest radio report is that our power company is now going to try to maintain power until they get reports of downed lines. As the local radio is information that is not available on any of the weather sites, I will keep reporting any info that we are getting locally or from my fellow islanders.

At the present time it is getting quite breezy here in town and the radio is reporting winds around the island of 25-45 mph. Not raining at my location at the moment. Most people I know are now where they plan to be to weather the storm and will let me know how things are from their locations periodically.

Recent call from the Brac is that everyone is fine but big waves on the Southside of the island. I will try to get an update from the L.C. shelter later on but don’t want to wear out their cell batteries needlessly. Those remaining few are really on their own over there. Great news that the storm shifted somewhat away from them.

More later.  Will pass along any factual information as I receive it.

Greetings All.....
well, I think we have all prepared as much as we possibly can at this point. Its the wait and see and Ivan is becoming more and more of a serious threat to hit us on a more direct level.  As I have said earlier....He is a very serious Storm and poses a great threat to all of us.  Seas here are thrashing  and i would venture to guess we have close to 10 foot waves atleast.  They are barreling in....and wind gust have picked up as well.  They have officially told us that power will be turned off over the next 3-5 hours as well as water.  Giving everyone plenty of time to make last minute preparations. We just finished filling sandwich bags with water to freeze from use as ice and that really was the last item. We will move later this p.m. as Ivan heightened sea surge threats as well as wave heights are a grave concern for us and the safety of eveyone.  I will continue to post as long as we can, thank you to Nicole & Joyce for sharing the cell #'s for texting purposes to keep eveyone informed.  Important that all of us correspondents work together to convey updates as much as possible!  Keep Safe
Stay tuned

Well it would appear that Ivan fooled us all again, and we are now in great
danger here.
I openly apologize to anyone who may have been misled by my earlier
thoughts on the severity of what we may see here on Grand Cayman.
We had a taste of what is to come, this morning as an arm from the edge
passed over us, and we got dark skies rain, and gusty winds. That passed
and as I type we have some steady wind with fairly strong gusts.
Everyone that I have spoken to has been getting ready for a major hit now,
and with a projected nearest point of around 30 miles away, so we should.

Wind is blowing, we have had some rain squalls with our parking area already flooded.

Looking at the latest advisory, it seems that Ivan has decided to change course and come even closer to us, 31.7 miles predicted, which is closer to us than the sister islands as previously predicted. It is also slowing down, leaving us another few hours to contemplate what could be.

10:44 a.m. Report, Grand Cayman
Hi All, sorry not able to post earlier, I have 4 little ones from 8 yrs. old down to 3 and they are as anxious as the rest of us!, We are continuing to put plywood today on our 2nd floor windows to further protect ourselves from the ocean surge as reports out of Jamaica have warned of high seas as with any hurricane.  As reported earlier, Ivan did not trek his way the direction most of us had hoped, i.e. over Jamaica, he skirted around it....not good for us.  Also busy cooking, have had unconfirmed reports that they will at some point cut power off for safety....we all know they (CUC) knows whats best, but thought while we have it, would be a good time to cook up various meats and perhaps some cupcakes...to have on hand for later. Continuing to pack things away.  As far as are weather, we are experiencing light periods of rain, off and on, but there are areas where the sun is trying deparately to shine through.  Wind gusts are definately there, but we are ok right now.  so, keep all of us on our three islands as well as Jamaica in your prayers....
stay tuned.....
for other correspondents here in Cayman Islands....a reminder that if we are able to we can text to each others cell phones if service allows. That way one of us, whoever has battery power to their computer can post on this site...just a reminder as many of our families are watching our posts in the states.  I know mine are in Ohio!

The local news just reported that the worst of the storm is meant to pass by us around 4AM Sunday and 2AM for the sister islands. A friend at one of the shelters on the Brac reports that they are all fine with over ½ the population in 3 shelters, 450-500 in the Ashton Rutty center located on the top of the bluff. Winds there are presently estimated at 45-50mph and occasional rain.

There are 12 people in the shelter in Little Cayman with 2 more expected. Some beach erosion is being reported there.

- update from George Town, Grand Cayman
  • From: "Joyce Cantlay" <joymar AT candw.ky>
  • Date: Sat, 11 Sep 2004 09:29:27 -0500

We are starting to get queries and phone calls from concerned people abroad and wondering why there are not too many postings from us. The reason is that the storm has slowed down considerably and whilst we have some breezy winds and periodic heavy rain, the storm is still very far from us. At the moment with Ivan only moving at 8mph, the eye is not expected to be close to us for another 24 hours or more. We were originally meant to have the storm pass us by this point when it was moving much faster.

We will start to get some worse weather over the next several hours so we will report periodically. Given that Ivan has moved further west, and therefore closer to us we continue to take further precautions. Since I am housing some of the “refugees” from Cayman Brac and Little Cayman (including a couple of pets) we do plan to stay put in our condo in George Town. In the event we lose power I will have someone overseas post for us provided we can use our cell phones. So stay posted over the next day or so and we will try to get information to you as best we can. (Mrs. Best, Nicole is fine and is going to stay with a friend).

Oh what a difference a night's sleep makes to the potential picture - need
to have some "Wide Awake Tablets" to keep up with this one!

Weather wise - not a lot to report - ocean seems very high on South Side and
Waves 6-7' - Winds gusty (up to 20-30 Knots max right now on the North Side)
seemingly out of the East but boxing the Compass slightly (ENE to ESE).
Living on the ocean on South Side, one becomes acutely used to the slightest
shift in wind speed and direction and wave noise - not so used to figuring
it out from the North Side.

Busy right now conferring with Grand Cayman "interests" and doing some
re-calculations, so will keep this post short.

Will provide longer post (with some ocean pics if possible) later on.

Stay Safe

It looks like Ivan has a mind of his own! We now seem to be more in his
path. It has been raining on and off all morning and the winds seem to be
picking up just a little. I know that this is only the beginning.

I was here during Hurricane Gilbert, and although I was only 10 years old I
can remember him quite vividly. I don't wish a repeat. And we were even
spared most of his force.

I hope Ivan decides to turn once again.

Stay safe to everyone, and our prayers are still with Grenada, Jamaica and
now Cayman.

well, more concern arises with Ivan skirt around Jamaica.  It did not go directly over Jamaica as projected earlier....prayers are out to our friends in the sister islands....be safe.  Here in Grand Cayman, we had some rain during the night, some thunder but nothing really. Seas have picked alittle from yesterday.  As earlier reported everyone has worked very hard to prepare, more so I think than even for Gilbert! scary!
prayers off to Jamaica as well....today will bring packing to perhaps move to shelter if need be as we are on the water. To all of our friends, be safe.
stay tuned

Getting a bit breezy - perhaps 20 mph on the north side of the Brac; rough frothy seas  with surf lines close together.    Our old barometer dropped two tenths in the last five or six hours.    The two of us are loading up now, shortly to head for the cave.     If we are able to reach others later by cell phone, we may phone in posts.

Good luck to everyone and Godspeed.

FROM THE BRAC

A beautiful early morning or late night depending on your attitude - I
digress!

We had a couple of Rain squalls earlier in the evening - 9.00 PM and 9.45 PM
with typical Line Squall winds - very short lived. Right now it is a perfect
night , soft cool breeze, clear sky and stars all over.

The Brackers have done everything in their power (and perhaps a bit beyond)
to take every precaution they can - all ages, shapes and sizes have been out
working today - despite a growing tension, the people still have the time to
talk and wish each other well. I can honestly say that whatever devastation
IVAN may bring, I have no fear of looting or any form of breakdown of law
and order - I am also confident that the entire community will pull together
to recover as quickly as possible.

Everyone is pretty tired - there has been a lot of physical work for the
last 2-3 days and, deep down, some people are worried and perhaps
frightened, especially those who may never have even been close to any form
of Hurricane and/or Tropical Storm before - there are in fact 2 new guys at
work in this situation - until this evening they have been too busy to
reflect on what they have just arrived into.

Well, time to sleep and regain some strength as sometime soon every ounce
may be required. I will post again later on this morning.

Evening all - or is it morning already

Anyway everything still seems calm enough here in West Bay. We have had some strong showers over the last hour with some lightning. The wind has picked up quite a bit over the course of the day. I think everybody is bunked down for the night. The shutters are up, everythings packed away and we are all just waiting it out now.

The track Ivan is taking is a little alarming since it is passing almost below Jamaica instead of over the top like predicted, which means its coming closer to us than expected. Unfortuately Little Cayman and the Brac will be getting the brunt of this powerful storm and hopefully everybody stays safe over there.

More info in the morning when things should be a little clearer to see.

Hi all...weather here in Grand Cayman is now deteriorating a bit, small squall went through earlier....a short lived power outage happened alittle earlier as well, but it was due to CUC (our power company) cutting back trees from the power lines....so a need be for safety sake on their part, sort of took us all by surprise thou.....as beautiful sunny skies where upon us at the time the outage occurred...anyway it was short lived. We all watch with continued concern the recent hurricane track updates...for those of us who where here for Hurricane Gilbert.....we know how dangerous & the potential threats these storms can have even if they are offshore and not a direct hit. Hurricane shelters were open from noon today and grocery stores etc. are open until late this evening to accommodate continued needs. That's all for now...stay tuned

Hello to all!

The skies are still clear. I have taken a drive around the East side of the
island (Grand Cayman) and it looks as if most are prepared. We have also
boarded up ourselves. It looks like we may be lucky with only tropical
storm winds, but better safe then sorry. We have a small farm here with
horses, chickens, ducks etc. Have been working all day getting extra food
ready for the animals in the case Ivan decides to strike.

Cayman Brac and Little Cayman may not be as lucky as Grand Cayman but God
has taken very good care of us in the past, and I am confident he will
again.

We are all praying for the people of Grenada and Jamiaca.

We now will sit and wait for Ivan.

Hi guys
Well, hightened preparedness continues throughout the island. Have gone from Northside through Boddentown etc. and ALL are boarded up.....everyone is jittery...understandably so, we have not had a storm of this intensity in a loooooooooooooooong time and that is worriesome to all.  Many Brackers (people from Cayman Brac) have even flown to the Brac to board up their homes for protection.  This is certainly no time to be complacent.(sp?)...a hurricane of this strength can do alot of damage as our friends in Grenada have experienced.  Hopefully, if it continues on its northern trek.....it will go by us, we will experience high tropical storm force winds...but still something we need to be cautious about....lets not forget Mitch...and he was not a direct hit!
All is well for now thou.....overcast skies...but no rains as yet....just the continued sounds of power drills screwing in the plywood!

Hi everyone,
Well, I have just completed a drive around from west
bay, to the airport and back.
There seems to be very polarized opinions around the Island.
My gut feel is that we will see no more then the equivalent of a
Nor'wester, yet there are people who seem convinced that things will be way
worse than that.
Gangs of people are feverishly boarding up business premises, and homes,
together with some admirable tree surgery going on too.
All the banks, and similar businesses are closed today and tomorrow, but
some smaller places are open.
The supermarkets and hardware stores are doing good trade too.
Weather here right now is beautiful, with a slight breeze from the
northwest which is our prevailing wind.
That is about all I can tell you right now.
If you are reading this because you have family down here, then I advise
you to relax a bit.
I COULD be totally wrong of course, but I hope I am right, and this just
skims us.
More later.

Hi All. Well, a beatiful day in paradise. Beautifull sunshine and calm seas, as is expected in paradise, something to be greatful for!  We will all continue our preparations for Ivan. I am sure all will agree we hope the storm continues to move a bit north of us, not to bring harm to others, but to lessen the impact on our island. The storm has slowed down a bit, not a good thing necessarily as hurricanes are known for gaining strength when they slow down over open waters, and Ivan is now not expected to hit us until Sunday. Driving brings the continued sights of cars & trucks hauling plywood...and today will be a continuation of all boarding up.  Flights will continue taking people off island for safety and Shelters are continuing with their readiness.  May all be safe...thanks to the many who have emailed sending prayers etc. we still need them, so keep it up!
Stay tuned!

After endless debates we have decided to stick it out. Our only option seemed to be a flight to Miami... and Florida is only days away from Cayman on the projected path... connecting flights that would eventually return here without going through Florida become extremely confusing and expensive...and who knows when we could come back.

So the preparations; which were in progress as we flopped back and forth, go into high gear.

Cayman has been so lucky in the past, but we know not to believe the streak will continue, and all precautions are being taken. Ours thoughts are with Jamaica as we continue to watch this system closely.

'Party of four... your closet awaits'

Will send updates when possible as this system moves closer to our islands.

- Little Cayman/Brac report
  • From: "Joyce Cantlay" <joymar AT candw.ky>
  • Date: Thu, 9 Sep 2004 20:18:53 -0500

I left Little Cayman on the last flight for today. All tourists were evacuated today to Grand Cayman and were trying to get flights from Grand Cayman home. There are a few residents still on Little Cayman but most plan to make their way to either the Brac or Grand Cayman on the few flights that will be available before noon tomorrow. Quite a few of the residents have pets and are therefore making their way over tonight and tomorrow am via dive boats from the resorts. The first convoy is arriving in Grand Cayman at 10PM tonight with 10 souls, 3 dogs and several cats. Tomorrow’s will have at least 18 souls, 5 dogs and 12 or so cats. A few government people will remain on L.C. to staff the shelter but as there will be no medical aid available (the resident nurse was leaving) everyone has been strongly encouraged to leave.

Several Brackers have told me that are going to wait out the storm in the bluff caves, just what they did in the last huge storm of 1932. Cayman Airways put on a couple of extra flights for Brackers that wanted to go to Grand Cayman but then I heard that the planes were bringing people from Grand Cayman to the Brac as they thought they would be safer high on the bluff. Since the storm has moved slightly west, Grand Cayman may not be such a safe spot to be after all.

  • From: "MB" <mbar-cyb AT candw.ky>
  • Date: Thu, 9 Sep 2004 19:45:35 -0500
On my journey to work this morning, it was good to see Cayman Brac Power & Light out checking all lines, poles and cutting back any limbs that may have grown since the last cutting session.

A busy day - hot, sunny and hectic - addressing business issues ranging from Generator Checks, Equipment Tie Downs, Client Briefings to the pro-bono side of Sister Islands Tourism Association - keeping Resort Managers up to speed and ascertaining what their plans are.

The whole day rounded off by a glorious sunset and an absolutely beautiful evening - a good reminder of why many of us choose to and, are exceedingly privileged to live by the Caribbean Sea (just need that little something to put IVAN back into perspective again!).

I have been around many areas of the Island today and virtually all of the main Stores - the only words I can use to explain the overriding impression is stoical - somewhat of a Brac attribute. The visitors have gone (all credit to Cayman Airways Express and Island Air), the Dive Boats and most of the Dive Staff went to Grand Cayman at about 1500 hrs, there is no panic buying (as the barge was cancelled this week, there is little to buy anyway!!), and most people still have time to chat in that imitable Brac way - the main difference being that the conversations end with "Keep Safe" or words to that effect. IVAN is big and brutal and not to be ignored - everyone is taking this very seriously on Cayman Brac and Little Cayman and in fact has been for the last 1.75 to 2 days.

We all hope it will turn further to the North (and that is said with no callous intent to any of our neighbours) - this whole thing is actually a bit like 5 people standing in front of a firing squad, all saying "Don't shoot me, shoot the person next to me". The fact that IVAN is Cat 4 instead of 5 (at the moment) is a little bit of a respite.

Jamaica - good luck and hang tough!

Frankly, right now, weather wise there is really nothing to say except it feels like another evening in paradise - unfortunately, it may be the last of those for a while!

Now the wait starts, the re-checks of Shutters and Tie Downs, check the Sat Phone, recheck Action Lists, sitting down and briefing people at work about times for Lock -In, what to bring into work etc (for me - cannot beat a good supply of Wet Wipes when the going is about to get tough :-) - certainly beats smelling nasty!!) - and food - why not raid the Freezer and just cook up a storm, - live of cold cuts for a few days!

Time to go - I hope that I will be able to keep going for most if not all of the Storm - my work facility capabilities will enable me to do so - and I hope to be able to post some real time pictures (perhaps even Video).

All of you out there - go soft into the night and sleep well.

To be ready is important, to know to wait is even more important, but to use the opportunity is the key to life."

Hi All. Busy, Busy, Busy  thats probably the best word for today.  All of us are taking this storm for the seriousness it can have on our island. We have all been busy preparing, stores are busy, banks are busy, and in general everyone is in heightened preparedness mode.  The airlines have added extra flights to do their best to accommodate everyone trying to leave the island, Canada has arranged a personal charter flight for Canadian Citzens in order for them to have additional means to leave, only requirement being proof of being a Canadian Citizen...
We tried from early this a.m. to get flights on Cayman Airways but were not able to get through due to busy lines.....they have done their best to add the extra flights for everyone. We have been officially put on Hurricane Warning status....schools, banks, government buildings will be closed tommorrow. Our national carrier will continue to take reserved & ticketed passengers off the island. Ivan is a serious storm, and we are all paying close attention to its path.
and yes Gert....we did have a slight earthquake as you reported......we have all been to busy watching storms to report on it.....shame on us....kinda strange thou.....earthquake busy hurricane season etc.
stay tuned....we will all do our best to report things as we are aware of them!

well, our boats are almost put away, and I have started to bag clothes in
the shop, and get everything up off the floor.
For what it is worth, the "atmosphere" seems to have changed over the
course of today, and I get a much greater sense of foreboding from people
around me now.
People are frantically boarding up for this one, and the main road into
town has been solid all day. The vehicles travelling in the other direction
seem to all have sheets of plywood on their roofs.
Let's all hope this not going to be as bad as poor Grenada.

Good Morning everyone,
Forecasts seem to show Ivan a little
further North every time I look, which is helpful for us on Grand Cayman,
but of course our thoughts go out to those on the sister Islands.
A couple of the dive operators on Little Cayman will have a bit more peace
of mind as I know they brought their boats here into dry dock yesterday for
annual work to be done.
Most of the Dive Operators that moor on the West side of GC have already
moved, but we at Fisheye are going to dive around to the North this morning
and then put the boats into the mangroves for "safe keeping".
Interestingly, some of the larger hotels here seem to be taking this more
seriously than previous Hurricanes, I understand that is a result of them
having taken hits in the states recently.
Hopefully everyone will continue to take this seriously.
This morning we have scattered light clouds and very little wind so far.
I will tell you more as Ivan gets closer.

Well -  EARL has blinked and downgraded but still poses a potential threat.

Have got to still watch this System carefully - the fact it is moving so fast could, if it changed (strength and direction again), increase our risk exposure in a very abbreviated timescale.

2pm update
Hi again, we just got back from a long drive from Ocean Club to Villas Pappagallo to see if there was any damage. All is well, winds were gusting to about 30-40mph on Seven Mile Beach around 1pm and seas on that side were choppy but low. This are fine, Northwest Point is fine, all well that we could see. We will all be busy this afternoon and tommorrow removing storm shutters & plywood from windows, but it will definately be business as usual. We didnt find much open, Burger King was but everything else remains closed for today. Flights may resume this p.m. We will all be back to work tommorrow, Friday! Many have emailed to say they had trips scheduled to arrive in Grand Cayman, Saturday, Come on Down, Paradise is open for business as usual. As I said previously, we were very lucky, good luck to our friends in Florida!

Bye Bye Charley on the Brac,

All in all we fared well on the Sister Islands - some minimal damage - no signs of major trees and/or tree limbs down (that said, I have not been up and down every road on the Brac); one minor localised power outage -surprisingly little rain (no flooded roads in usual flood areas) and certainly Guests at one Resort were having great fun and taking everything in their stride!

Still have rough seas on the South Side but I am now just waiting for that first glorious ray of sunshine to burst through.

Off to start taking shutters down.

Waves running 8-10 Ft and some up to perhaps 12-15 Ft - wave affects appeared to have reached about 30-40 Ft further up the Shoreline (judging by flotsam/jetsam line) than usual.

No apparent Wind Damage - no tree limbs down in immediate vicinity - even the thatch roof on next door house cabana is still there and the ribbons on my wind sock are all intact.

Major salt spray in the air mixed with a light rain - looks like a misty UK morning!!

Morning All, things are just starting to pickup here on the South Side of Grand Cayman. The waves here at Ocean Club are 5 to 7', rain is at a drizzle.  They eye of the storm will be upon us within the next couple hours, and things will probably from this point on progress rain and hightened sea wise!  It was a quiet night, not much to report there, we are all watching and waiting in anticipation of Charlie.....he is at the moment gaining strength, and the probability that he does a "split" inbetween Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac is there but to early for us to know which way he will swing!

It is fairly calm here on the north side with the eye of Charley less than 80 miles away.    The rain has let up for now.     We've experience quite a bit of rain and occasional wind gusts.   I'm certain it's much rougher on the south side of the island.     Charley gave us a bit of a reprieve when it took the westward jog, and now looks like the brunt of the storm will occur in daylight.

  • Date: Thu, 12 Aug 2004 00:33:14 -0500
Although we have had some gusty winds and sporadic rain showers since 5.45 PM Wed 11 Aug, the first of the more intense winds (the ones that howl around the shutters) and rain storms has just started.

The thunder is rumbling almost constantly (although at a distance still - none of the earth shaking, almost instantaneous  "Boom - Flash" of an intense Brac Thunder Storm) and you can see the spectacular violet blue of the lightning through any small gap in the shutters and through the "equalisation holes". The noise of the rain on the roof is too loud to hear whether the seas have got any larger as yet - about half an hour ago they were choppy but certainly not dramatic.

Power is good without even a flicker - even the Satellite TV reception is relatively good - cut off now and then by extra heavy rain obscuring "path" to the satellite.

Charley still looks as though it will take the middle route between the Sister Islands and Grand Cayman and, currently, all 3 islands look as though they may dodge the full effects of Hurricane Force winds. I hope so!

Cayman Airways Express and Island Air flew their "pants off" to put on extra capacity throughout today for the Sister Islands - Thom Guyton and Marcus Cumber - many thanks to you and all your staff - reassuring support at a rare time (thankfully) when one can realise just how isolated and vulnerable living on a small Caribbean Island can be - not that I would change a thing about that!!!

Wife is fast asleep and will not disturb her until power fails and I feel it is time to head to the North Side and check into the work place to make sure all the facility and systems are as they should be or, - I think it is just getting too noisy, rough and rugged on the South Side!!

Am kind of sleepy as I have been up since 4 AM Wed 11 Aug ensuring that Work, Client and Sister Islands Tourism members are kept up to speed with what was developing.

Rain has eased a bit, so I will pop outside with flashlight and check on the state of the seas.

9:30PM Just returned from driving to North Side on the north coast to shutter up a condo. Winds are breezy and the sea is not too bad. Quite a light show in the sky, with lightening lighting up the sky from the south and east. Some strong gusts of wind along the south shore on the return trip to town. It has just started to rain in various parts of the island. The sea on the west side is calm. Still lots of people out and about, restaurants are open and local watering holes appear busy. Probably my last trip out for the night but will report further if I see or hear anything.

A beautiful morning here on the South Side - glorious sunrise, clear blue skies and a wonderful small lazy swell - perfect diving day right now!! No time for fun today - it is going to be a busy one - checking and double checking that everything is battened down and prepared at work and home.

No visible portents of what is to come - I feel that a direct "hit" on Cayman brac and Little Cayman is now inevitable and can only hope that there is no further strengthening over the next 12 hours. Thankfully, Grand Cayman appears as though it should miss the worst of it all

We have been through it before in the recent past ISIDORE & LILY, so I am confident that we will also handle this one in the same way. We are ready at work, the Power Company is ready, Public Works is ready and there are no overt signs of excessive panic buying in the stores - mind you, the barge was due today or tomorrow so some of the shelves were getting a little bare anyway :-)

All eyes are on TD-3 in the Cayman Islands, as the current forecast is for
it to be a strong Tropical Storm or Minimal Hurricane, passing almost
directly over Grand Cayman on Thursday Night/Friday morning. But we know
this can change, as these tropical systems have a mind of their own.
Hopefully we will be spared. We will prepare just in case.

Sunday turned out to be a beautiful but breezy day, as the wave, now TS
Bonnie passed by leaving about 2" rainfall according to my rain gauge.
Today was also a sunny day and tonight warm and muggy.

- Rain & Thunder
  • From: William H McTaggart <wmctagga AT candw.ky>
  • Date: Sat, 07 Aug 2004 18:09:25 -0500
Hi all,

It was certainly a relief to see TD#2 dissipate into a tropical wave. That wave however, has finally reached us in the Western Caribbean, and according to the satellite picture, it look like we could be in for a rainy night in Grand Cayman. (Ah the pitta patta of rain on a tin roof).  This afternoon we had about 1" in the area where I live, near the airport, and it continues to drizzle with Thunder in the distance.
The Eastern half of the island needs rain badly, and the tropical waves are a blessing for that area, since the convective rainfall usually occurs on the Western end.

Here is the official forecast from the met office.

Saturday
33°C 92°F
26°C  79°F East to southeast 10 to 15 knots today becoming 15 to 20 knots tonight: Higher gusts are expected in and around showers. Moderate with wave heights 3 to 5 feet today. With what has been a dry year so far, 4 1/2" according to my records, we
finally had a good "convection" rain, about 2", this afternoon in the SW
side of the island, George Town (the capital), and the airport area where I
live. By now we should have had 15" for the year.
Typically this is the area of the island that it rains more often. We have
been having some HOT days, lower to mid 90's and one day my thermometer
registered a 100 day. The rain had cooled off the atmosphere now, but
tomorrow will probably be hot and humid. Whew!!

It is nice to see the tropics quiet, but I am sure it will soon get
active. The tropical waves all seem to be passing to the south. Oh Well!!

Have a wonderful weekend!
William
