- Bermuda last week
  • From: "Ann L. Phelan" <ann AT bonairewindsurfing.com>
  • Date: Fri, 29 Apr 2005 10:04:35 -0400

April 17th I took off from Bonaire to visit another island, Bermuda. This was my first time going since the hurricane Fabian tore up the Bermuda.

Initially the weather was rainy and windy upon arrival. As the week progressed, the weather warmed up to about 75 each day. Winds lightened but kept my power walks along the Rail Trail comfy. Water temps were in the high 60’s, too cold for me but the tourists at our hotel, The Reefs, loved it.

The island has recuperated well after Fabian. Pictures at the airport depict a terrible mess. Let’s hope the islands have a quiet upcoming season.

Good day,

Winds returned a few weeks back after an unusually light air flow in the ABC’s for too many a weeks. It has been averaging 22 MPH daily. No rain to speak of. The floods and heavy rains of Oct. – March have ceased and the land is arid again.  The windsurfers are happy.

  • Date: Tue, 8 Feb 2005 21:11:52 -0400

The ABCs continue to have cloudy conditions, sporadic gusty winds and a wind reversal. Our winds are from the North..very odd..this is the strangest winter I have ever seen in the Caribbean since coming for over 16 years.

  • Date: Fri, 14 Jan 2005 11:24:19 -0400

May I ask why the radar images for the Caribbean do not show the precipitation that is falling so heavily on our islands? The radar appears clear for the ABC’s yet we are getting heavy doses of rain. Is there a better computer model?

We have had SO much rain since early Nov. This island typically classified as one of the driest of the Caribbean is as green as Killarney.  Street flooding remains a problem. I spoke to a long time resident and he cannot recall seeing this much rain in 25 years. What’s up??

Being a former New Englander, I can say, I love it. I feel for the tourists who came for sun. So everyone, “ Rain Rain Go Away, Come Again Another Day”.

Today we had intermittent rain, the the sky opened up just as the builders were pouring concrete into my foundation. It rained BUCKETS and it was COLD.  I looked at the radar on Storm Carib and the sky looks clear as a bell. Is that image old??

Any weather updates?? We are still windless.

  • From: "ALP" <ann AT bonairewindsurfing.com>
  • Date: Thu, 7 Oct 2004 06:53:20 -0400

Bonaire’s 37th Regatta has experienced the typical light wind conditions known for Oct. As a result it has been very hot and sometimes sticky after some nighttime rainfall. Nothing else to report about Bonaire.

I saw a friend from Aruba and she told me about the floods post Ivan. Apparently no one expected them and since the floods occurred at night people woke to devastating conditions. She reports good recovery now but a terrible stench on the island from decaying animal carcasses and rotting plants and what not. Also many mosquitos.

I think about our island friends in Haiti, Grenada, Cayman and all the other devastated areas with positive thoughts today.

- Bonaire Update
  • From: "Ann Phelan" <ann AT bonairewindsurfing.com>
  • Date: Thu, 9 Sep 2004 14:48:36 -0400
From BON's PR company in NY, Adams Ltd:

THIS STATEMENT WAS RELEASED AT NOON TODAY ON DIVE NEWSWIRE AND SENT TO THE U.S. MEDIA LIST

Hurricane Ivan Brushes Bonaire; Minimal Damage Reported

Kralendijk, Bonaire N.A. (September 9, 2004) -Bonaire’s residents and visitors alike woke up this morning to a beautiful sunrise.  Overnight fast-moving Hurricane Ivan passed north of Bonaire, brushing the island and causing moderate rainfall, rough waves and strong winds.  Although the southern coastline of Bonaire took the brunt of the storm due to 14 hours of southwesterly winds, with additional swells forecast to continue into this afternoon, only limited damage is being reported.

All of the residents and tourists that remained on island are safe, with minimal damage being reported by hotels and dive shops.  Hotels with very few exceptions are expecting to resume full dive operations by tomorrow, Friday September 10.  Electricity, telephones and water are all operational and no damage was reported on the landing surface and apron at Bonaire’s Flamingo Airport which reopened at 10:00 a.m. today.

As of 8:00 a.m. AST on Thursday Bonaire remained under a hurricane warning and was still experiencing some high waves.  Diving has not resumed and will not until the okay is given by the Harbor Master that it is safe to enter the waters.  This is expected to come tomorrow.

Jack Chalk, president of STINAPA, the organization that oversees the Bonaire National Marine Park, stated that “within 24 - 48 hours of having divers in the water, we expect to have an assessment of the conditions of the reef.  As the sea conditions were not as severe as initially predicted, we are expecting that there was minimal impact on the reef."

While Bonaire was mostly unscathed other islands were not as fortunate.  Our thoughts are with our Caribbean neighbors as well as those in Florida that have been affected more severely by both Hurricanes Frances and Ivan.

- Bonaire Report
  • From: "Mike" <mwerne AT cox.net>
  • Date: Thu, 9 Sep 2004 10:30:43 -0500
I had not seen a report on Bonaire so I thought I would send you this if interested.

Hurricane Ivan Report:
Bonaire has weathered its closest encounter with a hurricane in almost a decade with coastal damage but its infrastructure intact. The eye of Hurricane Ivan passed 60 miles to the easternmost of the ABC islands.  Ivan was a full fledged, category 4 storm when it targeted Bonaire. The island last dealt with a major storm in 1996 when Hurricane Cesar developed just north of the island growing into a category 1 hurricane only days later. Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao are on the southern fringes of the hurricane belt. They are not totally outside the hurricane belt as many think. History says that roughly once every 100 years considerable damage is caused by tropical cyclones passing near island.
While storm preparations are a rare event on the island, this threat was taken seriously. Officials declared a Hurricane Warning early Wednesday morning. Airlines BonairExel, DCA and KLM cancelled all flights to the island. Disaster services were mobilized at 8 am. Most business closed by noon.  A storm hotline was announced. Shelters were opened in all of the barios. Yachts and local boats sheltered in the two protected marinas on the islands. The harbor anchorage was empty by mid-morning and streets were deserted. Downtown shops had their windows boarded and taped. Some seaside areas were evacuated.
As Ivan moved west, closer to the island, it took a slight turn to the north. The new course, further away, is what saved Bonaire from more serious wind damage, but magnified the impact of the battering seas as the new angle further exposed the populated western shoreline.  The storm effects peaked between 5 and 7 pm. The great majority of the damage was caused by waves which washed over seawalls and shorefront buildings. The highest wind gusts were clocked in 50 kn range, but the sea spray often exceeded 15 m (50 ft) high.  The high seas are continuing into Thursday.  Rainfall was intermittent and has not exceeded two inches in most areas. No injuries were reported. Preliminary reports are of extensive damage to shorefront homes in the southern Belnem residential area, beach erosion, flooded roads and shops. A curfew was in force.

On Thursday morning businesses and shops reopened and people returned to their shorefront homes as Hurricane Ivan spun away from the Dutch ABC Islands. On Bonaire cleanup was already underway. Some waterfront structures sustained serious damage and several small craft washed ashore at the height of the storm as Hurricane Ivan, growing into a maximum category 5 storm, passed within 60 miles of the island in the early hours of yesterday evening.
Island Governor Herbert Domacassé said, “The prayers of the people of Bonaire were answered when Hurricane Ivan veered away from our island.”
Because of high water in downtown areas electrical power was shut down to flooded sections but was being restored now that the storm winds have passed and the tide is receding. However, high waves continue to batter the exposed northwest corner of the island.
Damage to Bonaire’s coral reefs appears to be minimal based on early surveys conducted by the underwater video company, ScubaVision. Owner Hendrik Wyuts said “there does not seem to be much, if any, coral washed ashore in the area I inspected.”
The small boat piers of two diving resorts, Divi Flamingo and Buddy Dive, were washed away. A full report will be in the next issue of The Bonaire Reporter.

From a resident in Bonaire:

At the moment everything is still quiet. It's clouded, and we had some

rain downpour this morning; that was the front of the storm system. We

are in a lull now. In about 6 hours we should see the first major

storms and rain, and by tonight we'll be in for it. How serious it's

going to be is hard to tell; looks like the eye will miss us by some

150km, but if it changes direction suddenly (still possible, it seems)

then we will be hit fully.

The Dutch Navy has sent 2 Orion planes with 30 Marines this way and a

ship with support materials, just in case. The Government has a

crisisteam that has arranged for rental trucks for the Marines and

other volunteer personell.

Everybody is watching and listening to the media. Schools and

government organizations are closed for the day.

Also, I just spoke to my friend in Curacao. Buses are not running, all closed. Some light rain and VERY hot. No wind.

GOOD LUCK..

Still here in JA after an interesting night. When Charly became a
hurricane most shops and businesses in Mo Bay closed. There was an eery
feel to the island. We hit the grocery store to buy coffee and sauces to
bring home to Bonaire and of course that was a mistake. Long lines. Funny
what folks buy before a hurricane hits. One man had 10 tins of butter
cookies, 7 boxes of sugar cereal and 2 huge tins of powered milk. LOL..

We waited and waited reading, watching the Weather Channel and having
afternoon tea at our hotel (www.roundhilljamaica.com)..which btw is
INCREDIBLE.

Around 5 I decided to make a dinner res at Day O Plantation. They picked
us up at 7 PM. Light drizzle no wind. We went home around 9:30 to pulses
of lightening. After bedtime it really went off. The boomers and cracking
in ths sky was tremendous. Heavy rains but not much wind. This morning all
is still and the sky is grey. The ground is littered with leaves and twigs
but nothing much here at Round Hill.

Best of luck to all. We will try to get home to Bonaire today if Air Ja is
back on track.

Bonaire is experiencing hot weather, light winds and thankfully cloudy skies. It's time to invest in an AC unit.

It's HOT here in sunny Bonaire. Winds are incredibly light and tides are very low at Lac Bay. We had a little rain yesterday in the AM but otherwise skies are crystal clear.

Send some wind.

I am a Press Volunteer at the 18th Annual Aruba Hi Winds. SUPER winds but gusty as usual for this sunny island. We had a brief spell of rain this morning and now it's quite cloudy.

Hope everyone is well in the islands.

It's HOWLING here in Bonaire. Last check was it was blowing 29 knots with much higher gusts. I do not own a sail small enough for this wind but will head off to windsurf soon.
Enjoy the day!

The Netherland Antilles has been experiencing clouds and WIND. It has also
been unusually rainy in what is typically a dry season.

Today it is very cloudy with decent wind. It's Dive Festival so the island
is jammed with divers. Super tourist activities and more. Come on down.

I was in Aruba over the weekend and man, we had some nice rain. Returning home to Bonaire I found massive puddles so here too, we had some good precipitation. Winds are back with a vengeance. I am stoked so I can sail sail sail.

Wishing the entire Caribbean a safe hurricane season.

Thanks for all the posts MNI, DR and other places. Wow, the rains are incredible in your parts. Even here in dry Bonaire we had a good dose. We also had a wind reversal for a few days. STRANGE. Still very light winds and low low water levels in Lac Bay, the windsurf area.

I pray for wind again to cool us off...and less rain for the Leewards and north.

Peace
