- Rain

Good morning from Paamul, on the mainland of Mexico across from Cozumel.  It is a dark, rainy morning following a day and night of rain.  I emptied 2.0" from the gauge at 2 AM and another 1.25" at 6 AM.  We spent yesterday on Cozumel.  It rained on and off all day, and we were hit by a torrent of rain as we crossed the channel back to the mainland on the 6 PM ferry.  Quite a sight as all of us riding outside scrambled for shelter.  So many people had sleeping babies and children, and were huddled everywhere covered with whatever they could find to keep off the driving rain.  Fortunately, we are blessed with highly skilled ferry operators and we docked gently and without incident, other than being soaked and bedraggled.
Radar shows an unusual NE to SW movement of these scattered rain cells, and a circular formation south of us above Honduras.  Right now the main force of this system seems directed to Belize.
Hope the sun is shining elsewhere!

Good morning from Paamul.  It has been raining more on than off for the past 24 hours.  It rained all night and is gray and overcast this morning.  Radar shows circulation above the top of the Yucatan Peninsula, pretty much centered over Cozumel.  I haven't seen or heard mention of this little system, but it is damp enough to frustrate tourists.  My rain gauge has 1.7" in the last 24 hours.  Watch the radar for updates!

- Tropical Storm Larry
  • From: Linda Gosslin <gosslindl AT yahoo.com>
  • Date: Fri, 3 Oct 2003 11:22:18 -0700 (PDT)
Many people planning trips to Cancun, Cozumel and Playa del Carmen have written asking about the weather here.  Tropical Storm Larry was over us Sunday through Tuesday, with heavy rain, rough ocean and sullen skies.  It has now left our area and is due west of us, not affecting our weather at all.  Things look good for the next several days.  We do hear an occasional rumble of thunder, and clouds come and go, but it has been lovely the last couple days.  This time of year is notoriously unpredictable, but right now, things look great in the western Caribbean!

A bery WET good morning from Paamul, south of Playa del Carmen, Mexico.  It began raining about 10 PM last night, slightly earlier north of us.  It has not stopped for 11 hours, and is heavy more often than not.
There is no wind, thunder or lightning, just a drenching downpour.

At this time I have recorded 3.30" in my completely unscientific rain gauge in the backyard, for the 11 hour period.

Looking at the satellite, it appears that this system is almost stationary, circulating over western Cuba and the Mexican Caribbean coast.

The temperature is 79 degrees, so it's really a very nice day except for the inconvenience of the rain.  The tourists will get wet but they will not  be tossed around by wind or feel cold.  Having it rain actually improves the humidity factor around here, since the air is cooler.

Have a lovely day elsewhere, hope the sun is shining south of us.

We are back online and, I'm happy to report, none the worse for Claudette.  The storm passed much further north than expected.  I heard (on Los Angeles news) that Playa del Carmen experienced flooding, and that Cancun had heavy rain and wind.  None of that occurred here.  We had .65" of rain last evening, and gentle gusts.  It was a good drill for us to go through all the preparations, anyway-Linda

Thankfully it's all good news today ~ CLAUDETTE passed about 30 miles north of us about 3:30am this morning.  We experienced light gusting winds throughout the night accompanied by mild off/on rains.  All of the beachfront street businesses closed by midnight last night to ensure no one [employees or tourists] was out late in the approaching storm.  Boarding was put up on storefronts, sandbags deployed and the city secured our stoplights so they wouldn't sway/fall in the high winds.  Things are relatively calm now, seas are just choppy and it's cloudy ~ still waiting for the Harbor Master to open the Port for boating activity but all is well here!!

As today AT 19:09 This first tropical storm seems to be just a close call, since no significant rain or wind are happening and it could be no more than a humid night with some gusts of wind, hopefully. We are located at 19 degrees N and Claudette is right infront of us at 150 miles away and heading NW.  (Whew!)

Hi:

This will be the last email from Paamul until after the storm.  Our internet antenna will be taken down at 3 PM CDT to protect it from the storm.
Right now there are very black clouds to our west, but to the east and south where Claudette is approaching we see only white fluffy clouds.  The sky is blue and beautiful overhead, the breeze is gentle, the tide is out with only tiny whitecaps out beyond the reef.  We expect the big change to begin around 6 PM tonight as the storm gets close enough to affect us.  If 18' waves occur here, we will all be flooded as we are no more than 200 yards from the ocean, and only a few feet above it.
No word of evacuation yet, since it is still only a tropical storm.  There are about 20 families here, mostly couples, as well as the employees who staff the restaurant, dive shop and rental palapas.  The furniture and bedding are being removed from the rental palapas as I write this.
If it continues at the current speed of 16 mph the center of the storm will pass very close to us, probably a few miles to the south, around daybreak tomorrow morning.
When we get back online I'll let you know how Paamul fared.  Until then, good luck to everyone in the path of the storm.

Thanks for the heads up in your note!!  As for Cozumel the sun is shining brightly right now with NO CLOUDS in the sky and the seas are flat.  The Port Captain allowed small craft out for this morning diving/snorkeling but advised to be in port by 1pm and listen to the next advisory....they say they will know more at 10am but that we will get high wind and rain.
Grocery stores are busy as folks stock up on the basics...including candles!  Gas lines were 3 hours long yesterday by late afternoon.  More later as Claudette gets closer!!

At twilight the parade of boats leaving Cozumel to shelter here on the mainland was going full steam.  The horizon was lined with large boats and small heading for shelter at Puerto Aventuras, 3 miles south of us here at Paamul.  We are tying down our storm curtains, putting the patio furniture away, taking decorations off the walls.
We all live outdoors under palapas with RVs for bedrooms, but have lots of possessions on our decks.  We are expecting wind and rain to start tomorrow toward evening, unless conditions change overnight.  Will write more tomorrow.

It is raining for the second full day - this little tropical wave, or depression, is keeping a lot of rain right over our heads.  A shame for vacationers, but nice for the mangroves and other greenery.  I had 2" in the rain gauge this morning, and it's filling up again.  Little to no wind, just gentle rain.

Rains and light winds are hitting Cancun. People are starting to ready
themselves for very strong winds and a lot of rain. We are hoping to hear
from our Governor in the next hour. We believe the rains and winds will
intensify by 9:00 pm.
