Same haze over Culebra...and no one seems to have any answers here either. It seems to have lifted this morning. |
- '03 Rainfall Data |
Good Morning, Here are the stats on rainfall for Culebra, PR, 2003. As you will see it was the wettest year of our records. No major storms, but plenty of rain. The trees damaged from Hugo & Marilyn are finally coming back to life, and filling-out. Still, many shorelines remain barren due to those storms. - amazing day |
While records are being set for, to put it mildly, historically untimely weather, we on Culebra are having one of the most spectacular days we've seen in a long time. The SUN IS OUT, the SKY IS BLUE, some puffy clouds, and a fantastic breeze like Christmas winds but not as strong making for no mosquitos. It is one of those days you want to wrap up and send to everyone you know anywhere in the world, and a brilliant reminder why we choose to live in these islands. Hope the rest of you are having the same! |
- November Rainfall Data |
You will see the months total of 21.8 is a record for November, with the previous high in '87 of 17.9 inches. Also, with a years total of 57.6 already, we will be right up there with '87 in total inches. Culebra is slowly drying out and not too excited about this weekends forcast for more rain. -- _______________________________________________ Get your free Verizonmail at www.verizonmail.com |
- Sunshine, BUT |

Well, we saw the sun most of yesterday and this morning looks promising. The mosquitos have started to arrive however, and we will be in for some very unpleasant times -- my guess is the bugs will be the worst in recent memory..... And then we have this most unpleasant 5 day forecast -- it's really beginning to be very depressing.....our poor tourists!!: AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN JUAN PR 500 AM AST WED NOV 19 2003 .DISCUSSION... AT THIS HOUR PUERTO RICO APPEARS TO BE SHOWER FREE AND THE DOPPLER ONLY SHOWED ISOLATED TO SCATTERED SHOWERS AFFECTING THE ISLAND OF ST THOMAS AND THE COASTAL WATERS. WINDS ARE STILL FROM THE EAST BUT THEY ARE EXPECTED TO SHIFT MORE FROM NORTHEAST DURING THE DAY. AFTERNOON ACTIVITY WILL OCCUR FIRST ACROSS THE INTERIOR SECTIONS. UPPER LEVEL WINDS ALREADY SHOW A MORE NOTHERLY COMPONENT THEREFORE MOST OF THIS SHOWERS WILL SPREAD OUT TO THE SOUTH PORTIONS OF PUERTO RICO. WE SHOULD HAVE PLENTY OF SUNSHINE FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYS DURING THE MORNING HOURS AND A MORE CLIMO TYPE AFTERNOON SHOWERS DURING THE AFTERNOON.THESE SHOWERS COULD PRODUCE HEAVY DOWNPOURS AS LOW LEVEL MOISTURE CONTINUE TO BE HIGH./EM AS BEFORE MENTION...ANOTHER SYSTEM WILL AFFECT US SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY. STRONG COLD FRONT NOW ACROSS THE FLORIDA PANHANDLE PRODUCING SEVERE WEATHER IS TO SWEEP ACROSS FLORIDA...EXITING THE MIAMI AREA BY EARLY EVENING TOMORROW. 18Z RUN OF THE GFS SHOWS THIS FRONT CONTINUING A SOUTHEASTWARD PROGRESSION...KNOCKING ON OUR DOORSTEPS AS EARLY AS FRIDAY NIGHT. GFS SHOWS BOUNDARY THEN SLOWING UP AND BECOMING ALIGNED IN A WEST TO EAST FASHION ACROSS PR/VI BY SUNDAY...WITH GOOD MOISTURE AND AXIS OF RISING MOTION WITH FRONT RIGHT ACROSS AREA. UPPER LEVEL TROUGH IS PROGGED TO BE NE OF AREA THIS WEEKEND...SO MAIN UPPER DYNAMICS WOULD BE TO THE NE...THANKFULLY. HOWEVER...GFS SHOWS AN 80 KNOT JET ROUNDING THE BASE OF THIS TROUGH SUNDAY...WITH LOCAL AREA IN RIGHT REAR QUAD OF JET...WHICH WOULD FAVOR SOME RISING MOTION. THIS ALL SPELLS ANOTHER POSSIBLE RETURN TO WET CONDITIONS FOR THE UPCOMING WEEKEND. WHETHER WE GET A LOT OF RAINFALL WITH THIS UPCOMING FRONT REMAINS TO BE SEEN. AS TO AVOID MAJOR FLIP FLOPPING OF THE FORECAST...TRENDED FORECAST POPS DOWNWARD THU-FRI...AND UPWARD FOR THIS WEEKEND. SHOULD MODEL RUNS BECOME CONSISTENT ON SHOWING THIS SCENARIO...THEN POPS CAN CONTINUE TO BE INCREASED. IT IS STILL FAR AWAY...SO FORECAST PLACEMENT AND TIMING OF FRONT WILL LIKELY CHANGE NEXT FEW DAYS. WILL BE SOMETHING TO WATCH. /DG |
- the sun |
Last night a sunset and this morning a sunrise! And a radar that looks clear. Let the clean up begin. |
- !^$# AT ! |
Rain, thunder, lightening and a lousy looking radar picture. Pulling the drip buckets out again...and that's all I have to say. |
- hide & seek |
While the sun is giving it a good shot, the rains seem not to be over yet for this area...heavy rains during the night and a short mild one this morning. But the wind has picked up a bit, which if we are lucky will blow away some of the 573 zillion mosquitos starting to hatch...That next huge black cloud you will see over the Caribbean won't be moisture! |
- magic |
So in the bliss of a weak sun I'm walking around the property wondering how high it is going to grow in the next few days and down by the water is this very raggedy brushy plant, not quite tree, not quite anything but pretty so I've let it be...lo and behold it has a bloom on it when it's never bloomed before - and it's a wild orchid of some sort but absolutely orchid family and very beautiful. And how can you not grin, even when a few more raindrops started falling down, when you have a wild orchid come out of this drawn out emotional miasma? Gotta love island living! Little mousies in my house...you can go back to the fields soon! |
- big yellow ball |

Big yellow ball in sky hurts eyes feels good! Saw blue, yellow thing too, crossing fingers saying yes yes yes!!! |
- Over for Now! |
It seems like the worst of it is behind us -- we haven't had rain for several hours now!! Now we can start the drying out process as many of us have flooded homes or businesses. I haven't heard of any real damage here on Culebra, but having seen in person Farjardo on the main island on Wednesday, I know our neighbors are in trouble. Let's keep our fingers crossed that we can squeak by with no rain for several more hours -- it was so wonderful to have to search for my sun glasses this afternoon as we actually saw some blue sky!! - Culebra Rainfall |
Good Morning, Last night Culebra recieved 6.5 inches of rain in 6 hours. Since the 1st of November Culebra has now recieved a total of 16 inches. It is now raining again, so I feel safe in saying we will break the previous record for the month of November, which was 17 inches in 1987. Many roads in our section are unpassable due to heavy rutting by rain. As the previous messenger stated however, things are worse on the big island of PR. Excuse me a moment *silent scream* ok...I feel better now. Just when it seemed the rain was ending, it got worse than ever here; seriously hard rain that is going on as I type, thunder, lightening and two news leaks in the roof. But that is the selfish part. People on the big island of PR are homeless, with mudslides, flooding, homes destroyed...here it is just a tremendous annoyance to business people, tourists, and other locals who can't get to work. That will all pass. For those who are truly in terrible trouble, I can only hope this ends quickly. |

It has actually stopped raining for a bit here in the last hour. The waters are full of run off and pretty filthy, and Mr. Sun has not made an appearance as of yet, except to make it a brighter gloom. I don't have an official idea of how much rain we've gotten here, but I know it is a LOT. What happens next seems to be, well...up in the air! |
- vet day |
While the rain poured and the mud grew sloppier, I listened to my neighbors party from about 6 this morning til an hour or so ago, which lifted my spirits as I watched my gardens drowning. Culebra is wet, muddy and mold is growing on our sandals, but the sun WILL come back out, and it will be beautiful and green in a week. Clap your hands three times if you believe! |

Look at that radar view! Went for a sail to our lighthouse island Culebrita Saturday. One of those days with friends, just enough clouds to make pictures, enough sun to have the water exactly right, and laughter enough to recall all week. Remembering all work and no play makes MJ glad to have friends with boats! Back to watch level vigilant beautiful, until the fat lady sings. |

Just when you think it's safe to look at the sat pics...and there is this big twirly thing! A blue sky day on Culebra, the Sport Carnival (go little ponies!!) a loud success and people starting to think about their Halloween costumes. We don't need a Nicholas coming 'round. 75_20031012.1715.goes12.ir.x.tr 75_20031012.1715.goes12.ir.x.tr |
- Mini-Mindy |
Good Morning, Culebra experienced what I will call "Mini-Mindy" last night. We received 1.3 inches of rain, with wind gust of 43 mph. Over the last 3 days we received a total of 3.6 inches of rain, so there is plenty of run-off this morning. - Rain on, rain still on |
I had a front row view for the dramatic rain storms yesterday, watching St. Thomas go into a white out as it headed our way...only to split around the island and go to the Big island of Puerto Rico. Of course we eventually got lots more ourselves and the ground is now soggy without a let up in sight...although right now I hear more roosters than rain falling. Everyone was excited about going home from work and cooking soups and other foods we normally leave to colder climes. Too much rain and we'll all turn roly poly! |
- Heavy weather |
Last night with winds coming out of the WEST (first time I've ever had to shut windows on that side!) we had, after a beautiful but hot day, a storm of major proportions with hard rain, lightening and thunder and enough wind to tear my shade tarp down. The plants are happy, and right now the water of Ensenada Honda is like a lake - though from the looks of the sat pics, much more of the wet stuff is on the way. |
- Mosquito season |
While still in the midst of hurricane season, we are closer to being carried away by the needle nosed ones. Mosquitos are occupying our thoughts even as we keep an eye to the east; glad for the occasional heavy rains but a little tired of wearing DEET as our eau de scent. Of course...we all agree here on Culebra, better than having no roofs! |
- RainFall |
Good Morning, Yesterday within a 24 hour period, Culebra received 5.4 inches of rain. At one point we received 3 inches of that total in a two hour period! A real "frog strangler" and the dry creek bed was roaring all night with the run-off from the hills. - Rainfall |
Good Morning Culebra received a pleasant rainfall to end the month of July (9/10 last night). Attached is the rainfall data for Culebra so far this year, compared to yearly averages. The rain last evening was a good "soaker" and will really benifit the plants. Bill -- _______________________________________________ Get your free Verizonmail at www.verizonmail.com |

- Tropical Storm Ana |
The following was copied from Accu Weather.com Atlantic Ocean Today's Discussion April 21, 2003 08:00 a.m. The Atlantic, Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico hurricane season does not officially begin until June 1st, but the first name on the 2003 list has already been assigned. The area of low pressure some 140 miles south-southwest of Bermuda showed enough convection, and enough organization, that the National Hurricane Center gave it a name -- "Subtropical Storm Ana," at 11 PM EDT Sunday. The upper level steering winds will take this system south of Bermuda today, producing some squally weather on the island. The only effect on the U.S. mainland will be large northeast swells along the mid Atlantic and southeast coastal waters. Tomorrow and Wednesday, what's left of Ana will continue to move eastward, through the open waters of the Atlantic. Ana is only the second known subtropical or tropical storm to form in the month of April. The other time was April 21-24, 1992. That system was subtropical in nature, i.e. not truly warm core, as a tropical system is, and it was not given a name. -- _______________________________________________ Get your free Verizonmail at www.verizonmail.com |
