Cozumel is still being hammered with strong gusting winds 30-50mph and we have 3-4 ft seas with sporadic rains and clouds.  The storm has moved on into the Gulf but we continue to have tropical storm type weather conditions.  The Port Captain has kept the Port closed now....4th day.  Ferries have not run from the mainland since Friday night.  Air flight traffic resumed yesterday with both Continental and some charter flights landing/taking off despite the high winds.  Hopefully things will be back to normal soon!!!  It's time to dive!!

The winds of Isodore keep hitting Cozumel. Local news Is trying to organize aid for people affected in the Merida area. Local business still closed and ferry service has not resumed.   The Capitan of the port has the port closed for all commercial activity. Lines at the gas station were the order of the day to store up until ferries start running again. Winds are around 20 to 35 mph and scattered showers, with stronger gusts. Still no major damage on the Island,. Just a feeling of impatient.  With the wind gone all will go back to normal but the wind just keeps blowing.

Today the winds here in Can Cun have been stronger
than any other day.Lots of power outages y Phone lines
down.Trees are down.Flooding in the streets throughout
the area.Phone lines on y off.

Airport seems to be open for some flights but not for
all.

Still windy y rainy as off this writting but seems to
be improving.

Port is closed as to be expected...

Other than that not to many problems.

Tommorow should be better?

Remember a Palapa in Yalapa is better than a condo in
redondo....Unless its in the path of Isador...

Cheers.....From Can Cun

- A turn for Cozumel
  • From: Prodigy <divein AT prodigy.net.mx>
  • Date: Mon, 23 Sep 2002 14:43:16 -0500

Cozumel is feeling Isodoro. Rains and heavy winds keep the ferry closed. Isadoro turned in to Merida and has the Yucatan bracing. Rains have picked up in Cozumel. Coming now from the east at 20 to 30mph and gusts. The Capitan of the port here has the port closed to all activity. People here are now forming lines at the local gas stations as new supplies may be slow in coming. Cozumel is starting to make collections for the people in the areas most affected. Bottled water, caned foods and  powdered milk for babies among the priorities. Tizimin,  Tzusacab, and other areas around Merida as well as the Island Holbox  will be the most affected. Alert is still in affect for Veracruz, Quintana Roo and Puerto Catorche.

Cozumel, Here comes the sun.

The worst has passed. If you can call it the worst. Just mild winds during the nights. Out of the south or SSW to be exact. We have now winds 25 to 35 mph with higher gusts.

Not a whole lot of rain. Scattered showers now and gusty conditions have the water stirred up and still

quite choppy. I went to the Harbor late last night and saw a lot of wave action. Breaking over piers. 3 to 7 feet or so with some heavy sets. No real rain, so not much flooding here on the Island. I can say that we sustained NO MAJOR DAMAGE and will be back to normal as soon as the wind lets the water calm. Not enough water movement to do damage to reefs. So get your dive gear out and lets get ready to dive.

See you down under

Well, Just got back from the harbor to check the boats. Winds have picked up considerably. 30 plus with gusts to 45 or so mph. The wind has turned slightly to ssw.

Seas still high. 3 to 7 feet. Higher in the channel. We have had steady rain since early evening. Surprisingly light for the situation but we expect more later this morning.

We are not having any problems with services. Phone and power etc.. Just mild wind to report. I will check back in the morning.

Good night from Cozumel.

Gert,

We are seeing some bands of dark clouds and a little rain but all in all, I
think we are far enough south that won{t be feeling too much impact from this
one. Winds are normal, actually lower than normal coming out of the west.

- Cozumel feels a bit of the edge.
  • From: Prodigy <divein AT prodigy.net.mx>

Well almost 6 pm local time. Winds are a little unstable. Gusts then calm. We got a little rain this afternoon. Humidity feels like it has gone up.. If that is possible.

From the reports we have been getting we are on the edge of the storm and just waiting. A few of the local stores are boarding up. Not a lot of activity. Airports have canceled all flights in Cancun. I heard there were quite a few people waiting there. Waters have calmed somewhat but still a lot of white caps. There has been a lot more cloud activity. Looking to the north, It looks like a gray black wall has come down between Cozumel and Cancun. From the satellite pictures it shows us in the storm, when we are still outside of the heavy winds. Just waiting.

I will write again this evening.

That’s all from Cozumel.

Saturday 1 pm Cozumel.
Winds from the south west from 20 to 30 miles an hour and higher gusts have
the port closed to all traffic. Including the passenger ferries. We are
hoping the service will resume on Sunday. A wind change has left the east
cost very calm. No waves but a visible current. Wave height on the west
coast are 3 to 6 feet with water levels up at least a foot. No rain as of
yet. Overcast with some blue sky showing. Looks like the worst went to the
north. Isla Mujeres and Holbox.
Most stores did not close and are open for business. We are expecting Sunday
and Monday to be business as normal. No damage done to our area.
That's all from Cozumel.

The front page of newspaper EL DIARIO de YUCATAN had big picture of satellite map with Isidore and El Canal del Tiempo is issuing frequent reports-all say she is headed our way. We are two Americans living on the beach here. Rained a little bit early this morning and the water is getting rougher. We are considering moving our furniture upstairs as I am worried about a storm surge. The locals are not worried at all. Everyone I have spoken to says nothing is going to happen but some rain.

Things are getting more interesting here as the storm approaches the northern tip of the Yucatan Penninsula!!
At this moment it is cloudy...big puffy grey clouds with strong gusty winds coming from...can you believe...the SW !!!
Rains have been sporadic and amazingly light given what has hit Cuba already.
Wave heights are 3-4 feet now and expected to increase later today.
Forecasts seem to indicate our worst will be this evening and tomorrow.
Everyone is fine it seems....no panic really...just alertness and of course less tourist activities going on!

Wish us well!!

It is very calm here in Cozumel. Slight breeze no more. Wave height on the
other side (east coast) is extremely high with a major under tow.
The Port is closed to boats under 40 feet. With all snorkel activity closed.
Scattered showers. Temp in the mid 80s
The Island has not taken much action. No real feeling that we are in danger.
No boarding of windows or gas lines. Planes continue to arrive.
That is all for now.
