pouring rain not much wind now but earlier gusts to 40 or 50 knts
just having the pleasure or adventure of traveling from st john a mere 4 miles
from st thomas at about
3 pm we were caught in the middle of the worst of it
the ferry ride is usualy very pleasent what a suprise or not... knowing full
well a wave was upon us
we had to return home to st thomas seas were 6-8ft
rain biting and wind pushing smaller craft off course
several passengers had life
jackets
in hand every one else were crouched under garbage bags
literaly soaked to the bone we reached stt shivering
drenching rain on st john before boarding
arrived home to no power
wind or surge had torn wire loose from transformer
wapa was here within an hour
still pouring..thunder and lightning cistern overflowing we need it
awoke to beatiful doulble rainbow this morn
but this looks like it will last afew more hours
the worst is yet to reach
but this is a baby by our standards

- Relative Quietness
  • From: "Dave McDermott" <superdave AT islands.vi>

Happy afternoon! Not much going on in the tropics. Seems like when something sinister comes off the African coast, the Bermuda high in the mid-Atlantic pushes it down into the ITCZ where it basically disintegrates!!! That's not a problem!!!!

Lack of rainfall is the apparent problem so far. We have had some light periods of showers move through and the island is alot greener tahn it was 3 weeks ago. However, a semi-drought condition still exists.

Wariness should still be observed as we are starting to enter the 2 month "peak period" from mid-August to mid-October. Just because it has been quiet doesn't mean our guard should be let down!!!!

- NEXT!

Well, TD#2 was much like I anticipated: A dragon-fly like short lifespan. I doubt we will even get as much rain as we are supposed to get given it's fragmented nature. And we definitley need the rain!! I just had to buy water (USD $300.00) for 5200 gallons. This normally would last us about 3 months but.....

Our next impressive wave is slowly making it's way across the Atlantic. Still very far away but this one I believe has more potential. Time again, will tell.

- interesting wave

Welcome back to another season of: Name That Storm! Our first impressive wave of the 2001 Hurricane season has manifested itself in the Central Atlantic and at a low latitude at that. Looks impressive on the latest satellite imagery with light winds aloft (less than 15 knots) and warm sea surface temps (82-85). While the forecast models do not foresee a closed circulation forming at this time (they leave it as an open trough), I see a depression by this time tomorrow. There really is nothing to inhibit slow growth of this system at least until it gets within 250-400 miles of the Caribbean Island chain. Moving west/northwest at 15 mph, it also has an interesting track/curve. Time will tell.

Meanwhile, another impressive wave has moved off the African coast as well and the calm before the storm appears to be on it's last legs.

Happy to see some familiar "correspondents" from battles before ready for this campaign! Keep up the great work!

Here's hoping we don't have to type much this season.

Dave
