- Hurricane Iris and Jerry
  • From: Eduardo Santa Ana Perez <josantana AT prodigy.net.mx>

Iris hit Belize last evening.  Our Governor Joaquin Hendricks closed schools in the Capital of Quintana Roo (Chetumal) to provide shelter, medicine and food to our neighbouring country Belize.  The storm hit strong approximately 145 miles per hour! More reports will come in today.  As far as Jammin Jerry, I believe it is now Scrammin Jerry! Thank goodness.  Our prayers are still with our neighbouring Belize as they recover.  Cancun is Sunny and warm we look forward to increasing our tourisim, normally activities have not been disrupted by this close call.

Iris dropped south and entered Belize.  There was no effect on the Yucatan coastline other than cloudy skies and lightning to the south.

As today, monday evening, light winds from the north east at no more than 10 m/h can be felt along the northern part of the Yucatan Peninsula, hardly any rain has fallen during the day.
Just a few hundred miles away it looks like another story.
Check Belize and Honduras for a closer point of strike for Iris.
Touristic activities go on as normal in the "Riviera Maya".

All is well in Cozumel. Light preparations began yesterday as Iris' path
was more uncertain. This morning urgency seems to have decreased as the
forecasts seem more certain of landfall farther south from us. We are
watchful as scattered clouds hang overhead and drop intermittent rain. All
the best to our friends down south in your efforts to stay out of harms way.
Be safe.

- Cancun and Hurricane Iris

Today is sunny and hot.  People in Cancun are not paying too much attention to Iris thinking it will stay south of us.  The first signs of panic here are with drinking water, bread and eggs.  Shelves are full, so no signs of people preparing for Iris.  However, I will be keeping a close watch on Iris and Jerry.

- Chantal close call

I gladly report just a close call from Chantal,

In the area of Playa del Carmen ( 60 kms south of Cancun) winds roared with no more than 50 miles / h during monday evening and some minor squals came ashore with no consequences to residents as to the wildlife and flora of the region. It was a good practice for other storms or hurricanes to come, everyone got ready and kept things as if a grade 4 or five was coming!!  The rehearsal was good and on the happy sad kept everyone ready for the rest of this hurricane season.

Tuesday mornig came with an intermitent rain with no wind power behind it, so its been all day, as Chantal fades away.

I just got off the phone with the folks at Villa La Guacamaya 6-miles north of
Xcalak and they made it through the storm OK. They said it was a long night and
there was one point when they wished they had left but all in all, they didn't
have any real damage. They said during the worst of it the wind was driving the
ocean south like a river so they really didn't get a big water surge or suffer
significant beach erosion. They didn't lose any windows or solar panels and
their wind turbine towers are still standing. She said their cistern is now
full but they are only having intermittent rain showers this morning. I was
pretty surprised when my phone call went through the first try and the
connection was quite clear.

Everyone here on the island has been preparing since Friday for the arrival
of Chantal. With internet access to all the weather sites and with the
storm's path forecasted to be right over us for the past 3 days, the threat
has been taken very seriously. There is no sense of panic or urgency at
this point, only a deliberate determined effort by all to take the necessary
precautions as things progress.

Funjet did pull out a plane load of their passengers yesterday (a day early)
and the morning Continental flight from Houston was cancelled today. The
port captain has closed the waters to all boatcraft and requested that small
boats be removed from the water entirely as a precaution. The people ferry
crossing to the mainland has been cancelled for the rest of the day pending
further movement of the storm. So far, this has been about all of the
transport related changes.

Early this morning the reports indicate that the storm will make landfall
down around Chetumal but we are expecting rain bands and high winds here on
the island nonetheless. We are all tired from preparations but ready to
face what comes!!
Basically....all is well in Cozumel!!

- Cancun Update - Chantal
  • From: Scott Wilson <swilson86 AT yahoo.com>
  • Date: Mon, 20 Aug 2001 06:16:39 -0700 (PDT)
Mon morning 8:15am local time in Cancun. Sky is very
dark but no lightning. Surface winds around 10kph
(6mph) as usual by eyeballing it. Cloud cover above is
moving much quicker and we are in light rain. Power
and phones are up (obviously as you are getting this
email).

I notice less traffic on the major streets in the city
today as many people I suspect are not going to work.
Residents are putting their cars on whatever higher
ground they can find. It is very flat in all of the
Yucatan, flooding and trees falling on your car (or
people!) is the main concern. Looks like just a normal
rainy day so far... but we will see in the next few
hours. [Scott in Cancun]

Hola from Paamul on the coast south of Cancun:
We had thunderstorms rumbling over in the middle of last night and again right now this morning.  The winds are gentle so far.  People here are planning to evacuate if Chantal becomes a hurricane, but right now it does not appear that it will.  This is an RV park and no one wants to ride out a hurricane on the beach in an RV!  People here plan to go either to Coba, Valladodid, Playa del Carmen or Cancun for shelter.  I will write more later.  Linda Gosslin
