Hello,
I live in the Hotel Zone of Cancun. Sunday was the worst day of the event,
with strong wind, some heavy rain and high waves. There wasn't any flooding.
And very few people or businesses even bothered to tape their windows. In my
opinion, no tourist should change their plans of visiting the incredible
location. Everything here is now back to normal. The sun is shining and
it's a beautiful day.

Hello All,

Just to let everyone know:

There has been no hurricane in Cancun and vicinity.

Television reports from Chetumal, on the border with Belize, has shown
a swollen Rio Hondo, a small catamaran overturned, a slightly grounded
shrimp boat, the lens of the lighthouse at Xcalak broken and portions
of a road washed-out resulting in the isolation of three villages in
southern Quintana Roo and six in Campeche.

Mudslides have reportedly caused a few deaths elsewhere.

Yesterday was mostly sunny as is today here in Cancun where there were
no more rain or winds than the intermittent showers and slight breezes
usual in the month of November. From Monday to Wednesday, it rained
here about four times for about ten minutes per shower.

If persons are looking for dire circumstances, they fortunately won't
find any here.

Cheers,
John Pastore

Just returned back to the states after spending a little over 3 weeks in
Playa del Carmen. There was very little damage in the Cancun, Playa area.
The storm was far south and caused Belize the most trouble with flooding.
Both Playa and Cancun are totally back to normal.

- Cancun update

Looks like Keith is fizzling out. Many people are
asking what it is like in Cancun. As of Mon afternoon:

Sun is out, cloud cover about 40%. Temp is around 75F
or 25C. Winds SE at 8kmp (5mph). Generally a really
nice day. Streets are dry and it's business as usual.
There is zero damage as winds and rain never amounted
to much over the last few days. Might of greened up
the parks a bit!

Keeping an eye on Keith is still advised as these
critters can be tricky. I like to watch
www.hurricanes99.com and the local Mexican TV of
course. If Keith sneaks up the Yucatan while onshore
we might get a day or 2 of wet weather. You'll have to
sip Margaritas inside rather than at the pool!!

- Cancun report
  • From: Scott Wilson <swilson86 AT yahoo.com>
  • Date: Sun, 1 Oct 2000 19:44:04 -0700 (PDT)

Bands of heavy rain (15 mins duration) are coming
through Cancun this evening but streets are easily
passable. Wind around 10-15kph (6-10mph) from the
East.

Over the last 2 days residents have gassed up their
cars and bought extra food. Store shelves are still
full but shoppers are out a bit heavy thanks also to
the Mexican payday on 30 Sept. I noticed 30 mins ago
that restaurants are filled and it is business as
usual. When Mitch threatened last year many residents
boarded up windows but none have done so this time. If
Keith were to hit Cancun we would not be as prepared
as Mitch.

Occasional, but heavy, rainfall started just before sundown yesterday here
in Cancun. There are no winds at least in town.

News reports here, again in Cancun, of what is happening in Chetumal show
even more rain, but not enough of a storm, though rated Hurricane, to keep
Chetumal's television transmissions from being broadcast.

Their broadcasts show the residents having took all precautions, including
having sought shelter, but nothing of a damaging nature.

The storm's eye seems to be hovering just south of Chetumal toward Belize
City, and is being projected to cross the Yucatan Peninsula well south of
Cancun.

Hello Gert,

After several days of semi-cloudy weather, yesterday the sky became heavily overcast with billowing cumulus nimbus darkening considerably southward.

Yesterday the news here was of a tropical pressure system developing toward Chetumal, while today the news here is that a mild hurricane condition has developed and is traveling towards us (Cancun).

Folks are storing fresh water and some food, but it does not appear to be, at least yet, a threat.

Personally, it seems to me that a developing storm that is straddling land, as this one is, instead of out to sea, can't become a powerhouse.

But who knows? The weather seems to be evermore freaky nowadays.

Later,
