- Another Tropical [TAX] Day on the Island of Enchantment
  • By "S/v Don Quijote" <wb7adc at onelinkpr.net>
  • Date: Fri, 15 Apr 2011 14:45:41 -0400

Those of you in the USVI and here in Puerto Rico, remember, today is TAX day!  Get your returns in before midnight! Otherwise, just another beautiful day here on the north coast of Puerto Rico, the Island of Enchantment.  Temps in the mid 80’s, a nice trade wind from the NNE and plenty of sun.  But, like most places in the tropics, there has to be some rain.  We should be getting some this afternoon as the clouds are building and radar shows heavy rain south of Caguas moving towards the northwest and spotty showers are starting to show up on radar in the Luquillo area.  Sure beats dodging tornadoes!

It’s time for my afternoon nap out on the hammock as I’ve done my taxes and now it is time to relax and enjoy… ya’ll do the same and I’ll post some more later….

- Moderate Rain along the N. Coast
  • By Jack Hunter <wb7adc at onelinkpr.net>
  • Date: Fri, 25 Mar 2011 15:37:58 -0400
Well this morning it was beautiful. I had to run out to Canovanas this morning and it was quite a delightful day. By the time I picked up my daughter from school, heavy clouds were rolling in and around 1430 to 1500 local time, we had some pretty heavy rain. Most we've had for a while. We even lost power for a few minutes. Although expensive (25.7 cents /kilowatt-hour) I must admit it is becoming more reliable. Local radar shows moderate to heavy storms moving down out of the mountains traveling north (towards the Atlantic) from the San Juan airport to Barceloneta. Temp at the airport (as of 1456) was 81 degrees whereas here in Toa Alta it's only 76 degrees. Winds are light and out of the ENE. Except for no thunder and lightning, you'd think it was summer.

Stay dry

Jack

What's shaking?
5.4 between PR and Sto. Dom.

- Just a bit of Shaking going on!
  • By Jack Hunter <wb7adc at onelinkpr.net>
  • Date: Wed, 16 Mar 2011 14:22:43 -0400
This morning at about 9:45, as I sat reading my e-mail for the day, the house started shaking. First one way (east to west), then the other (north to south). It didn't last long, but certainly got my attention, especially after the 9.0 (depending on whose report you read) NE of Japan. It seems to me if you have such a large movement of the plates in one part of the world, it is bound to cause a ripple effect and therefore more earthquakes throughout the world. Granted, we have several 3.0 magnitude (or less) tremors each week here that few even notice, let alone feel. So, experiencing one at the 5.0 level (although distant) is unusual.

Weather wise, here on the north side we are experiencing early morning/late night isolated (or is it scattered) rain showers. Daily highs are in the low 80's and the low temps here in the low lands runs in the low 70's. Pretty typical weather. Good sleeping weather..... Hmmmmm where's my hammock?

Another fine day in the Caribbean! Satellite picture shows the whole eastern Caribbean clear and sunny. Here on the north coast of Puerto Rico it's nothing but sun. Well, maybe a cloud or two, but they are hard to find. at 5pm local (2100Z) temps were in the mid 80's and the wind, what there was of it, was out of the east. Radar is clear, except for the central mountains. Temps for tonight should be in the low to mid 70's. Not much else happening of importance on the big island of Puerto Rico.

Talked with my daughter in central Pennsylvania and they will be happy if it breaks freezing! Of course, it's snowing. I keep telling her it's easier to shovel sunshine than it is to shovel snow.

'Till next time,

- Another Fine day in Carib.....
  • By Jack Hunter <wb7adc at onelinkpr.net>
  • Date: Tue, 25 Jan 2011 18:29:46 -0400
Someone once said that a bad day at golf is better than a good day at work. Well, I'd go a step further and say that a bad day in the Carib is better than a great day at work. As a mater of fact, why work? I guess it does buy extra beer. Here on the "main" island of Puerto Rico, life is normal, except for serious crime. The murder rate has skyrocketed with 10 this pas weekend. We are on a pace to surpass the record breaking years of 2009 and 2010! That, along with the horrible road conditions and as usual poorly run schools, things are the same. I feel for those who live on Culebra and Viequez who are still having to deal with intermittent or lack of ferry service. It might get fixed in the next decade, but don't hold your breath. Nonetheless, it is still better than being back on the mainland and shoveling snow....

Speaking of that, just a few passing showers today. Otherwise a beautiful day with Easterly tradewinds, a few coulds, temps in the mid 80's. Forecast is for more of the same.

Now where did I put my beer?

Jack

There are a few cumulus clouds to the north but otherwise a fine afternoon.  A reprise from all the rain we’ve been dealing with.  A look at this morning’s surface analysis map (1200Z)  from NWS shows Puerto Rico sandwiched between two fronts so I doubt that this ice weather will last.  The “official” rainfall for the year at the San Juan airport (TJSJ) has passed the 80inch (2.032 meters) for the year, compared to the average of only 40.25 inches (1.023 meters) and we expect more.  We could very well set a new record for rain for the year.

INVEST 94L off of the coast of Columbia bears watching as it drifts west to west-northwest over the next couple of days.  The US National Weather Service gives it a 30% chance of developing into a tropical storm in the next 48 hours.  Ffolks in Nicaragua and Honduras should pay close attention to this disturbance.  I haven’t seen any computer models on 94L, it certainly bears watching.

A star ... Uh a storm is born, here in Puerto Rico. The spectacular lightning
and booming thunder were quite the show. The water canons were quite a blast,
too, here in the Levittown-Metro San Juan area, where I am sure there was some
flash flooding. All seems quiet at the moment but there has been scattered
shower activity all afternoon leafing up to this evening's
main event. As I looked at the infrared map a large white area appeared over
Puerto Rico. Invest 93? Sure seems like it. Either way, it's very wet and is
forecast to move north. The fat lady is yet to sing.

Good morning!

Good news and bad news.  First the good.  Dr. Jeff Masters of Wunderground.com predicts that the 2010 hurricane season has a 50% chance of being over and a 15% chance of a named storm developing that will impact any populated area. The bad news is that we are expecting more rain.  Now if we can just get rid of the remnants of TOMAS and its associated trough we can see sunny skies and less rain!  (Total of 78.67 inches for the year with 41.41in  being the year to date average)

Today in Toa Alta it’s mostly cloudy to overcast with 1200 AST (1600Z) temps in the mid 80s and humidity hanging around the 70 – 73 % range.  Heat index is in the low 90s.  Light winds from the WNW with radar showing large areas of rain stretching from several miles SW of Cabo Rojo to just south of Humacao and the island of Viequez.

It’s been a rainy rainy day here on the north coast of Puerto Rico.  Had some T-storms roll through around 1430-1500 local time (1830-1900 UTC), but other than that just rain.  National weather service has issued a FLASH FLOOD WATCH for all of Puerto Rico (including Culebra and Viequez) until Monday afternoon.  I’ll be glad when it all stops and we can start to dry out…..

- A Quiet Day in Puerto Rico
  • By "Jack Hunter" <wb7adc at onelinkpr.net>
  • Date: Sun, 31 Oct 2010 14:05:18 -0400

‘Tis another quiet day here on the north side of Puerto Rico.  Winds have been out of the east to southeast at 10 to 15 kts.  Scattered rain showers and temps in the upper 80s to low 90s.  Barometer is 1012 mb and falling.  Current radar shows a few strong storms between St. Croix and Puerto Rico moving westerly at about 22 kts and should just clip the southern coast.

Caribbean Hurricane Network shows the closest point of approach(CPA) to the southern coast of Puerto Rico for hurricane TOMAS will be tomorrow morning with the CPA being about 195 nautical miles south of Puerto Rico.  If TOMAS maintains a westerly track, IMHO, it will intensify to a cat 3 storm sooner that forecasted to do so.  By what I’ve read and heard, the bigger question is when will TOMAS turn north.

- Another Beautiful Day in Puerto Rico
  • By "Jack Hunter" <wb7adc at onelinkpr.net>
  • Date: Thu, 28 Oct 2010 15:27:40 -0400

Although it is another beautiful day on the “Enchanted Island” of Puerto Rico, INVEST 91L bears watching.  It continues to become more organized and is certainly something the ffolks of the Southern Windward Islands such as Trinidad & Tobago, Grenda and the north coast of Venezuela should closely watch.  Looking at the NWS computer models, once into the Caribbean they seem to show two trends.  One has 91L curving north into the Virgin Islands/Puerto Rico and the other a more southerly route over the ABC islands and on into the western Caribbean.  What makes this disturbance of concern to me is that within the Caribbean Sea there is ample fuel for 91L to intensify rapidly, regardless of which direction it takes.  How close to land it comes over the next couple of days will, in my opinion, determine just how much of a threat it will be for the Eastern Caribbean Islands.

PUERTO RICO Weather (2pm AST/1600Z)

SAN JUAN:  Temp 85°F, wind 080° at 12 Kts.  Barometer 1010 mb and falling.  Scattered clouds.

PONCE:  Temp 90°F, wind 160° at 10 Kts.  Barometer 1010 mb and falling.  Scatterd clouds.

MAYAGUEZ:  Temp 88°F, Wind 050° at 16 Kts.  Barometer 1011 and steady.  Scatterd clouds.

RADAR:  Moderate to Heavy rain S & SE of Mayaguez to Cabo Rojo and east to north and west of Ponce.  Storms are moving west at 10 to 15 Kts.

- INVEST 91L -- Worth Watching...
  • By "Jack Hunter" <wb7adc at onelinkpr.net>
  • Date: Wed, 27 Oct 2010 22:25:30 -0400

I guess the quiet time was too good to be true.  So far, 91L is just a blob of T-storms, but certainly worth keeping an eye on during the next couple of days.  Located SE of Trinidad & Tobago and forecast to move W or NW, this is one that could sneak up on us.  The next couple of days will tell.  Stand by to batten down the hatches!

This past weekend through today has been a pretty typical Carib day with temps in the mid 80’s, easterly winds and an occasional rain shower.  Currently it’s 79°F and the wind is at 21kts from the East.  Forecast is for scattered showers (60% chance) through tomorrow.

More tomorrow…

What a wonderful 10-10-10 day!  Temps in the low 90’s °F (30’s °C) light winds and a clear sky.  Finally a chance for my yard to dry out!  Here in Puerto Rico (and the mainland US) will be celebrating Columbus Day on Monday in recognition of Columbus’ discovery of the “new world” in 1492.  He didn’t discover San Juan Bautista until his next trip in 1493.  he didn’t really discover the “Americas” until later, but that’s a different story.

Let us not forget today is the re-organisation of the Netherland Antilles!  Now that is something to celebrate!

Here in San Juan we have had sporadic rains throughout the past week but nothing serious until yesterday.
Since about 3 PM yesterday we started getting squalls , and as the night fell they intensified.
It has been raining almost constantly all night and continues to do so as I write, around 5 am.

Yesterday afternoon there were island wide reports flooding at many roads. At least 40 roads had
been closed due to flooding, and several comunities were isolated; at least one due to the collapse of
a bridge in Cayey (center of the island).
I imagine that today in the morning the situation will be even worse after being raining all night long.
It is going to be an interesting and challenging morning commute for many  around the island if
at all possible.

Haven't given an update as I have been at my home on St. John, USVI, and didn't report as I see others are reporting from there.  Went back to St. John for 10 days to clean up after Earl and just as we finished cleaning up all the downed branches and debris...boom! along came what is not Otto and made the mess all over.  Lots of mud slides on St. John....more than I've seen in quite a long time....Needless to say the weather on St. John did not cooperate enough for us to get all the intended work done there that was needed...so we put our hands up and flew back to Ponce....noticing on the radar what looked like much nicer weather here!  NOT!  Howling winds and rain last night, and gusts and rain continuing today...as of right now we have had 1.23 inches of rain and still falling, 77% humidity with a tempature of 79.3F....the little rain guage shows the following history:
0.23 inches yesterday (but we noticed that the wind had knocked it over...and there was soo much rain I doubt that was accurate!!)
0.57 inches on 10/05/10
2.46 inches on 10/04/10
3.34 on 10/03/10 and
0.03 on 10/02/10....

WOW!  Guess it wasn't as clear as we thought...still dreary now...a little break in the wind and rain...am hoping for some sun to dry things out and charge the solar batteries so we don't have to listen to the groan of the generator (lol!), but looking at the sky, it doesn't look hopeful!!

Stay safe.

Hi everyone!  Not a bad day today, a typical tropical day with the temp maxing out in the upper 80s with high humidity and isolated T-storms.  On the way to my daughter’s soccer game, we ran into a downpour, but by the time we got to the game site, there were a few clouds about, high temps, high humidity, and a great soccer game.  The only bad part was after the game, a girl from the other team collapsed from heat exhaustion.  She was treated at the park, but as a precaution, an ambulance was called.  Although livening here in the Caribbean is great, we sometimes forget to take the proper precautions regarding heat related injuries!  Have fun, but be safe!

Although the Atlantic looks quiet, I’m keeping an eye on a stationary 1012mb low in the vicinity of 12N 34W.  It doesn’t look like much but if it starts to develop, we could have little time to prepare.    Other than some isolated showers across Puerto Rico, looks like Sunday will be another fine day.

I just found this image at the Bermuda Dopler Radar page.   It clearly shows the eye of Igor going over the half south of Bermuda!  (Bermuda island in gray color at the center)

My prayers are with all Bermudians.

  • Date: Sat, 18 Sep 2010 18:32:50 -0400

A rather pleasant day but unusual to have the winds out of the west and showers tracking west to east!  High in my neighborhood the high was 89°F/32°C with partly cloudy skies.  Isolated showers were observed tracking west to east, but otherwise a great day!  Hope all ya’ll have a great weekend!  Forecast for Sunday is MOS (more of the same!).

IGOR the giant has set its sights on Bermuda and, although weakening, may still strike Bermuda as a category 3 storm.  Let’s hope it degrades quickly or veers off to the north and spares the island!

- Puerto Rico update (Tuesday 9/14)
  • By "Jack Hunter" <wb7adc at onelinkpr.net>
  • Date: Tue, 14 Sep 2010 13:02:46 -0400

Another mixed day here on the Island of Enchantment.  Winds are out of the NE at 10 kts with some gusts to maybe 15 kts.  Radar shows scattered showers along the northeast  coast from Fajardo to Dorado (moving west) and as far south as Caguas.  Airport temp at 1600z was 85°F/29°C with 74% humidity and baro pressure was at 1013mb and falling.

IGOR appears to be FINALLY truning to the northwest and will soon be clear of the Caribbean islands.  With the exception of Bermuda, everyone can give a sigh of relief.  JULIA appears not to be a threat to any of the Caribban Islands.  “Invest 92L”, as disorganized as it is remains a risk for heavy rain to Jamaica, Cuby and the Caymans.  Although there is still a high potential for tropical storms, we are over the statistical high (September 10) and starting the decline to the end of the season.  What a strange season so far.

Hope everyone has a great week!

- IGOR may be starting turn to Northwest
  • By "Jack Hunter" <wb7adc at onelinkpr.net>
  • Date: Mon, 13 Sep 2010 23:44:05 -0400

Category 4 hurricane IGOR appears to be starting to turn to the northwest based on 2100z and 0300z advisories.  The 0300z advisory has the track at 275° moving at 8 kts (9 mph).  Not much different than 270° at 9 kts (10 mph), but enough to give hope that it is starting to turn.  Also indications that it is starting an eyewall replacement cycle and the central pressure has risen to 937mb.  We’ll see in the morning if we are out of the woods…..

- Puerto Rico Update 9/12
  • By "Jack Hunter" <wb7adc at onelinkpr.net>
  • Date: Sun, 12 Sep 2010 11:44:08 -0400

Here on the north cost it’s mostly cloudy with a NE breeze.  Current radar shows medium to heavy rain in the south central and south east of the island.  There is also a line of medium to heavy rain showers for just east of Aricibo westward to Aguadilla.  At the San Juan airport it’s 88°F/31°C with light winds from the ENE at 12 mph.

Invest 92L is south of the Dominican Republic, but still sending showers our way.  Invest 93L, just off the coast of Africa has developed into a Tropical Depression (TD TWELVE).  Although it is expected to develop further, all forecast models have it moving NW rapidly and no threat to the Caribbean.

Hurricane IGOR is developing rapidly and still on a westward track.  Current consensus is that it will turn to the NW within 48 hours.  IGOR is a Category 2 storm and could be a Category 4 within the next 48 hours.  Here are the 1500Z forecast positions for IGOR.

FORECAST POSITIONS AND MAX WINDS

INITIAL      12/1500Z 17.7N  45.7W    90 KT

 12HR VT     13/0000Z 17.8N  47.5W   105 KT

 24HR VT     13/1200Z 18.0N  49.8W   110 KT

 36HR VT     14/0000Z 18.4N  51.8W   115 KT

 48HR VT     14/1200Z 19.0N  53.6W   115 KT

 72HR VT     15/1200Z 20.7N  56.7W   125 KT

 96HR VT     16/1200Z 22.6N  59.6W   125 KT

120HR VT     17/1200Z 24.5N  62.5W   125 KT

Although IGOR is forecast to turn NW and not bother us, it is still wise to keep an eye on it.

Everyone enjoy what’s left of the weekend.

Well, this morning started out nice and sunny, up here in the hills above Ponce.  But it was soooo black out to see.  I checked the radar and the NHC to see the last tail of this disturbance is passing us by and giving the south shore and out to see a good grazing.  Humidity at 69%, temperature at 81.5F and barometer rising.  Installed the rain gague yesterday and it's showing 0.02 inches so far today!  I've attached a picture from this morning so you can see how the sun is shining here and how black it is out to sea.  The winds picking up here and thunder rumbling and lightening out to sea, and seems to be advancing in land a bit.  Time to close the windows again.

- Plenty of Rain in San Juan, Puerto Rico
  • By Francisco Echegaray <fechegaray at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Sun, 12 Sep 2010 03:44:12 +0000
We have had plenty of rain today due to this wave or disturbance that passed toward our south.
Even though most of the rain stayed out at the Caribbean Sea, we had a strong downpour in San Juan just before 9 AM.
Later in the early afternoon we got several showers and again as I write we just got another rain.
Luckily no flooding problems but the ground is saturated now.  Hope we dry up tomorrow, as the wave continues its move west.

- Invest 92L and Hurricane IGOR
  • By "Jack Hunter" <wb7adc at onelinkpr.net>
  • Date: Sat, 11 Sep 2010 23:41:00 -0400

Well….. Invest 92L dropped some rain on the north side of PR and that’s about it.  The question now is it strong enough to start developing and become a tropical storm or will it fizzle out.

TS IGOR is now Hurricane IGOR.  0300Z discussion has it moving 275° at 16 mph.  Still heading right at us and some models have it growing to be a CAT 4 storm.  Just hope it turns north BEFORE it hits the Northern Leeward Islands the Virgin Islands, or Puerto Rico.  I think we’ll have a better idea on where IGOR is going some time late Sunday or early Monday.

Currently 77°F/25°C with light SSE winds.  Barometric pressure 1012.4.  Just another rainy day in the tropics.  At least you don’t have to shovel rain!

- Puerto Rico Weather -- 9/11
  • By "Jack Hunter" <wb7adc at onelinkpr.net>
  • Date: Sat, 11 Sep 2010 16:37:00 -0400

We started getting scattered rainstorms from “invest” 92L yesterday and continue to get them today (9/11).  Local radar at 2000Z shows the majority of the rain to the south of the island moving in a northwesterly direction. San Juan Airport (TJSJ) reports calm winds and a temp of 80°F/27°C.  Mayaguez reports overcast with light rain.  Winds are light from the SE.  Ponce shows overcast with light winds from the NE.  Overall “invest” 92L looks like mostly a rain event.

TS IGOR is tracking almost due west and cold be a real threat to the Leeward Islands and Puerto Rico by  Tuesday morning.  The forecast for IGOR shows it making a turn to the NW on Tuesday, but so did EARL!  IGOR is big and has the potential to be a major hurricane by the time it gets to the Leeward Islands.  Whether it just brushes by like Earl or the Leeward Islands  take one on the chin.   Here are the coordinates for the forecast track based on their 1500Z discussion:  Forecast positions and Max winds

                       initial     11/1500z 17.4n  39.5w    60 kt

                       12hr VT     12/0000z 17.5n  42.0w    65 kt

                       24hr VT     12/1200z 17.6n  44.9w    70 kt

                       36hr VT     13/0000z 17.7n  47.5w    80 kt

                       48hr VT     13/1200z 17.7n  49.7w    90 kt

                       72hr VT     14/1200z 18.0n  53.5w   105 kt

                       96hr VT     15/1200z 19.5n  56.5w   110 kt

                       120hr VT    16/1200z 21.0n  59.5w   110 kt

There is also another “invest” just off the African coast.  Number 93L.  Looks like it will turn NW and bother no one.

Now is the time to look at your stock of supplies for a hurricane and make any adjustments!

I’ll post more later tonight.

- Update on the "Disturbance"
  • By Pam Taylor <ptponcepr at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Sat, 11 Sep 2010 18:12:00 +0000
Why is it that these "disturbances" come on the weekend or your day off?  Anyway, it was a beautiful sunrise this mornining in the hills over Ponce (see photo)....but this afternoon it has clouded up, gotten dark, is thundering and raining (see photo), as this "disturbance" passes to the south of us.  I see it now has a 60% chance of becoming a tropical cyclone within the next 48 hours.  Thank God it has passed to the south before it got organized.  Humidity at 54%, temperature at 87F and baromoter steady.  I did purchase a rain gague but haven't had a chance to get it up yet.  Maybe later or tomorrow, so I can then report rain fall.  Now, I guess we wait for this to pass and see what Igor will decide to do, and, oh yeah, the thing that's following it!!

A big thunderstorm woke us up at 5am this morning. Felt and sounded
like it was happening right on top of our house. We have received 2.5"
of rain in the past 24 hours. But the looks of all the water running
through the yard, I'd say most of that rainfall was in the past hour
or 2.

Sallutes,

Well, I was observed the remainders of  the Tropical Strom  Gaston,  but It seem that she want to rebuild and don’t get in this time. I guess that Tropical Wave don’t become a storm, it have difficult to generate clouds in the center. It’s don’t hold the clouds for much time. In the upper level have winds of the southeast to northwest and tear up the circulation. I seem that remainders  of Gaston will pass for our area like a strong  tropical wave.

In Puerto Rico, we get some strong showers, in the morning, and in the afternoon a sunshine time.

So nice to see the sun this morning...I just had to post the blue sky for encouragement!  Humidity at 77%, Temperature at 79.7F and barometer is steady! Yeah!  Hopefully we'll get a day or two to dry things out before something else comes along.  Took my usual walk with the dogs this morning up around the other side of the farm road.  Lots of leaves and branches in the road and alot of banana trees toppled.  Other than that not much else.  Hope you all are safe and weathered the storms.  Looks like Fiona is heading north and far enough away so as not to affect us too much...but I note that "thing" behind it has gotten a little more organized and will be keeping an eye on that....'tis the season.

Today was an overcast, breezy day. A couple of short, light rain
sprinkles this afternoon. Then the sun came out a little ... felt like
a groundhog -- I saw my shadow! Spent the day cutting and picking up
fallen/broken bananas, heliconias and gingers. Also dragged to
furniture back out to the pool and porches. We were without power and
water all day ... just got both back around 7pm.

- Hurricane Earl- Aftermath Arecibo
  • By Celso Hernandez <celsoth at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Tue, 31 Aug 2010 14:41:26 +0000
In the late hours last night, we started to experience some strong winds in my area of Arecibo, which is 50 miles west of San Juan.  Gusts, I estimate at 35mph.  Accompanying were waves of rain.  We hunkered down to get some sleep and it was difficult to ignore the sounds of the strom.   But just after 1AM, Tuesday morning (all local time) the winds and the rain just died.  It seemed like someone threw a switch.
There has been absolutely no more rainfall.  The garden suffered only two bent plants out of about 100.  The wife blames me for not protecting them better.  The breezes linger... sometimes reaching perhaps 15 knots.  Sorry, here in Puerto Rico we mix knots, kilometers, foot-pounds, miles almost at leisure.
Some of my relatives in Arecibo and nearby Hatillo have been out of electric power for at least 24 hours.  Luckily, my neighborhood has had no black outs.
Elsewhere in the Island:   180,000 customers are out of electricity.  As reported earlier: no government offices are open.  Schools are closed.  The state government decided yesterday to let go its work force early, at 12PM, and the resulting influx of motor vehicles on the Metropolitan area roads caused perhaps the worse bumper to bumper congestion ever.  It seems the private sector had decided on the same early release and it was chaos in San Juan streets.  This coupled with the loss of traffic lights due to the high winds resulted in mayhem.  Traffic cops could not get to the vital intersections to direct raffic as had been planned.
But, in conclusion I think that Earl was the storm that could but didn't!   Fiona, which follows, seems a quieter beast.

The reminants of Hurrican Earl are still eerily hanging in the valley here and out over Isla de Caja de Muertos.  Low hanging clouds and sporatic rain still here.  Humidity at 73%, tempature at 79.2, with barometer rising.  Hunkered down in the guest room in the garage when we saw the tornado warning box on the radar and read that it formed in Utuado and was moving south through Juyaya, which is north of us here in the hills of Ponce!  Much rain and wind throughout the night...but no sign of the tornado passing by! Thank you!  Hopefully these reminants of Earl will pass and we will have some sun to dry out before the next...Fiona...comes our way!

Only git 0.3" of rain last night. That's a total of 3.8" in past 24 hours.
Overcast and breezy now. Based on radar images it looks like we're out of the

  • By Celso Hernandez <celsoth at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Tue, 31 Aug 2010 03:16:14 +0000
At 9:30PM local time, I drove into the city- Arecibo.  The main road was almost deserted.  One or two cars had stopped on the sea shore road.   The occupants joviantly taking the spray from the waves that smashed into the rock barrier below.  The town square was completely empty.  That is not unusual at that time of night.  It is not a lively town as it was many decades ago.  There was some activity near the bridge leading out of town.  A few cars parked along the river and the occupants enjoying the cool breezes stirred by Earl.  On the way back I passed just a few places still open for business:  the fast food burger establishments and a couple of BBQ chicken places.  By the way, barbecue is a local Taino Indian word and refers to the method the fire wood is stacked at cooking.  This is contrary to what some Texans claim.
The roads were clean and there was no flooding.  Now, just past 11PM, the rains are getting stronger and there was some lightning activity on the trip home.  The winds are also picking up and doors slam shut all through the house.   I see the lights flicker and I fear that electric power is about to be lost.   So let me sign out, but not before reporting that school and the government are out tomorrow, Tuesday.  Of course essential personnel is exempted.
The Hurricane is officially at Category 4, but slipping past Puerto Rico.. to the north.

We have had heavy downpours today but tonight we’re having heavy bands of rain with sporadic high winds.  SO FAR (knock on wood) PREPA is keeping the power on Puerto Rico for us in the San Juan Metro Area.  GOOD JOB!  They trimmed all the tree limbs away from power lines this past week and were still trimming yesterday.  Schools and stores (well, I don’t consider Walgreen’s a store because they NEVER close.) and business closed at noon along with non-essential healthcare services (Clinics) at the same time.  Tren Urbano seemed to be doing a good job staying in service and on schedule.  However, the Autopista had its usual “el tapon” (drain plug….traffic jam) when I passed it at about 4pm.  And EVERYONE was at every Walgreens buying everything they could find.  Hopefully we’ll either see gray skies or sunshine tomorrow and normalize.  Bendiciones to all!

Here in Arecibo, a coastal city 50-miles west of San Juan, we've been experiencing on/off showers since mid morning today Monday, 30th of August 2010.  The showers usually last about ten minutes followed by a calm of perhaps an hour.   At least that is how they have manifestesd themselves until this afternoon at 2PM.
The governor held a news conference, surrounded by his key people and experts on emergency management.  This was at noon time and another follow up is scheduled this evening.  There are scattered electric power outages mostly in the eastern most part of the 100x35 -mile island.  Some 56,000 were immediately out of service at 11AM and work crews were out in force to restore power.
Locally, in Arecibo there are no reports of inundations.  The 8 to 12-inches of rain predicted to be left by the storm conditions, and hurrricane conditions in the east should cause many flooding events by tomorrow morning when Earl is predicted to turn north.  Presently it is a Category 3 hurricane.  The governor is cited as saying that the cutoff point for the hurricane strength winds is actually Arecibo on the north coast and Ponce in the south.  Arecibo is a city of 106,000 population and has the largest land area as an entity.  The winds are not expected to reach hurricane velocity in Arecibo and points west.  Ditto for Ponce.
By noon-time the gas stations were backed up with vehicles waiting their turn to fuel up.   The local super markets shelves were quickly stripped of bottled water and canned goods.
As I make this entry, it seems we are in one of those tranquil phases:  neither is it raining nor are there any wind gusts hitting the area.
I hope to enter a report tonight as Earl nears the island.  I am a "ham" radio operator and today I started to monitor the local 2-meter traffic around the island.  The radio amateurs really provide good reports of their local conditions, which I hope to relay.

Things here in Ponce are pretty much the same.  A little more cloud coverage and occasional wind gusts and rain, but nothing major.  Enough wind in the gusts to knock a few large, ripe guavas from the tree when I was walking the dogs about 20 minutes ago...I'll add those to my lunch menu!  Attached another picture...larger than the last so you can actually see (I'll get the hang of this!) the increasing clouds.  Humidity at 67%, temperature at 81.5 F and barometer steady.

Very hazy this moring out over Isla de Caja de Muertos.  I've attached two pics, one from yesterday and one from today for comparison.  We've moved all "flying objects" from the construction site and hope we don't get too much wind and rain.  Live webcam from St. John not showing much action on the passenger dock there.  Will report again later today as Hurricane Earl passes.

- Earl

All is quiet in Metro San Juan.  The skies are partly cloudy and clam.  The coquis are peeping as usual.  The calm before the storm.

Today I went to Costco to drop off prescriptions at 1130am and encountered the parking lot nearly full, and the store was wild with activity.  People were fighting over water and buying generators like they were loaves of bread.  I’m sure it was a great sales day for Costco, but, I waited out the in-store storm until the water was gone and the cashier lines dwindled.  It was obvious that despite all the advanced warning and advice, people had not prepared.  I’m not surprised.  I stayed out of the grocery stores.

- Hurricane Earl

Earl has just been upgraded to a Hurricane per the 11AM NHC advisory.  It is a beautiful day here in Ponce, Puerto Rico (my approximate location in the hills above Ponce, PR 505, KM 8).  Our little weather station showing 55% humidity and tempature at 87.6 F, barometer rising. As of this hour we have no perceptible wind.  Looks like Earl didn't quite make the northerly track expected and will sideswipe our little island of St. John.  I've had a "godsend" friend batten down the hatches on my home there and we are keeping our fingers crossed.  Here in Ponce, on the south side, the predictions aren't too bad, but we are heading to get some caulking and duct tape (wonder invention!) to tighten up some open spaces, even thought we don't expect too much from Earl. I'm also hoping to locate a good rain guage to help with these reports.  Will keep you updated here as Earl passes.  Keep safe!

- Puerto Rico Under Hurricane WATCH
  • By Francisco Echegaray <fechegaray at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Sun, 29 Aug 2010 12:12:57 +0000
Hi everyone:

Just a brief message to clarify info from our fellow Ray that posted just a few hours ago.
Acording to the 8:00 A.M statement of the weather service Puerto Rico, including Vieques and Culebra,
is still under a Hurricane Watch - not a Warning.
He must have gotten confused.
Of course, we might go under a warning situation later today but not yet.  And of course
we here in P.R. are counting on Earl to start turning today more towards the north.
My thought are with all people of Anguilla, St. Martin, and other Leward islands under Hurr. Warning.
Please take all preacautions.

Currently the sky in San Juan is partially cloudy.  There is some haze.  And absolutely no wind.
(Calm before the storm? ....)

Stay safe everyone.

- EARL approaches

After 3 HOT! rainless days, we woke up this morning to the news that a
hurricane warning has been issued for Puerto Rico, Culebra and Vieques
(as well as the USVI and BVI and ... ). The current weather looks a
little overcast and hazy ... but the sun's not totally up yet. We did
our "hurricane prep" shopping last week, so just a quick run out to
the store and gas station this morning to top off what we need. Then
to make the decision do we start prepping our property today or wait
and see what tomorrow brings from EARL?

- rain in Rio Grande today

Crazy storm rolled into the Rio Grande area from the west around noon today.
We only got about 0.1" of rain, though we had big black clouds and
lots of wind and thunder.
Elsewhere on the mountain, they got up to 2.5" of rain.

- Finally, a break in the rain!

Only 0.6" of rain in the last 24 hours. That brings our total rainfall
for July to 25.6".
We have cloud cover this morning, but I can see some patches of blue sky.
Things are looking better!

- Very rainy Day in San Juan
  • By Francisco Echegaray <fechegaray at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Tue, 20 Jul 2010 04:23:31 +0000

We had bad weather in San Juan area, all day(monday).  The rain started by mid morning and though it was not intense, it was almost constant during the day until dusk.   I am concerned for the center of circulation I am seeing coming by the northeast corner of Puerto Rico, close to the coast.   I hope we don't have more weather related incidents affecting us so the celebration of the Central American and Caribbean Games can keep going on as planned.
