Stayed overcast all day. We had some rain this morning but just a few spits and spats this afternoon. the wind even died down.  the waves and surge is still high. The stars are even trying to make an appearance this evening. Roads are bad. The airport here on the island was chocka block with people this evening all coming to celebrate  their thanksgiving holidays.

We are watching with interest as those rain-clouds begin to turn.
Sea was acting and sounding weird before dawn and continues to be very choppy inside the reef, with magnificent breakers visible outside the reef.
Rained off and on this morning - heavy rains and COLD!
Only misting now - dark skies.
Tourists are not going to get much of a tan.

the remains of 27 have been affecting our weather for a couple of days. initially NE at 20knots earlier in the week now it has switched around to N but still around the 20knot mark. this morning is was overcast but it has now really started to rain. Most of the dive boats are staying in. Its not looking too good for a big local wedding that is planned on the island tomorrow.

Ambergris Caye - it's beginning to get a little overcast.   The sea has a strange feel to it.   Wind are light.  Temp - about 88.
We anticipate getting pretty wet over the next couple of days, but sense that Beta is not going to be make life too difficult for us in Belize.

Our prayers are with our neighbors to the south and west of us - it sounds like they are in for a rough time, and they can ill afford it.

I have missed the stars the past several nights..
They are finally just visible here again. They are a beautiful, welcome sight.
The wind gusts are fewer since yesterday.
The island is hesitantly settling back into it's"groove" here.
The sea seems determined, almost looking like a river flowing northward~
Life is back to life ..live music at Fido's on a Saturday night.
We are so incredibly blessed to have been spared Wilma's furor.

Hoping that our neighbors north of us on the Riviera Maya are safe, and perhaps breathing a little easier, and will get to see the stars real soon~

What incredible survivors out there.. Several members of our Belize disaster rescue response team are heading up that way tomorrow to help~ We wish them well in their selfless endeavors~

I wish everyone a peaceful evening..

Cori

Just been into town and some parts of the road is flooded from the high surge. A couple of the hotels have lost piers to the waves and there has been a lot of beach erosion, the most I have seen in the last 7 years only Mitch did more damage to the beach side of the island.
the rain has just started with a vengeance. So there will be some more flooding here on the island and more than likely on the mainland.

Hey guys..

Some pics from mi casa at 6 am...we have waves, ( out on the reef AND beach),  we have surge, we have some heavy wind gusts from the back.. with beautiful cool temps.. (  I think of it as our "extreme version" of fall . )

Some birds were out battling the wind's, as well as some ( always present) dragonfly's.

We wish for all to be safe ( wherever you are)  as she continues ( hopefully) to "move on by" our isla bonita ~

Overnight wind and waves have picked up - wind into the 30's kn or more still westerly (offshore)  and wave rolling upto the foot of some of the hotels - hard to tell what the height outside the reef is maybe 12ft-15ft. lots of foam and airborne spray as the wind pushes them back. very little rain overnight in town and south. Looks like our friends up in mexico are going to take, I think, a third direct hit this season.

5:44 am local time.  No rain.  Overcast skies.  Strong wind.  Haven't been to the beach yet to see what the water has done to the shoreline in our area.
It will be interesting to hear how it looks in town.

Winds out of the west at around 20kn.
Waves on the reef not too big at present maybe peaking at 5 or 6 ft. Channels still open - a small fishing boat managed to get through maybe an hour ago. Have seen bigger waves after a couple of days of onshore wind. Main difference is the height of the tide. Tide is very high so more waves than usual are coming over the reef and hitting the island. causing beach erosion already. the waves are only predicted to get bigger through tonight and tomorrow. Most of the boats are on the lagoon side hiding in the mangroves. a few people have boarded up. Rain/drizzle has started. skies are now dark and vis is getting bad.
It was looking like Wilma was going up past Cancun but the new models are having it doing funny things over the Yucatan which can only be bad for us. may only bring more rain. only time will tell.
Managed to get a bit of kiting and windsurfing in today. If it does go past tomorrow will have Maui -esque conditions with side off wind and big waves....

Ambergris Caye - 3 pm.  Wilma's center is almost due-east of us.
Moderate rain.  Seas are higher than normal, and occasional swells surge up over piers and encroach on seaside gardens.
Skies are darkening.  Winds are light to breezy.
We normally do not get breaking waves inside the Barrier Reef - but take a look at the photo I took half an hour ago - this is normally a bone-fish flat - now surf's up.
All homes in our area are boarded up, boats out of the water.  I think we are fine - sitting in the dark, but fine.

Prayers for the Mexican coast, Cuba  and Florida.

Lots of thunderstorms and rain the last few nights, one lightning strike  managed to fry my TV. The days have been pretty hot and sunny with light breezes. Today the wind has swung south again and lots of low cloud with some drizzle and light rain and cool temps (although my thermometer is reading 85 C). Definitely signs of this developing system. Cant wait until this hurricane season is over.
Not much in the way of sailing, windsurfing or kiting going on in this sort of weather.

Although skies were very dark all day yesterday, we have yet to receive a single drop of rain from Stan.
Winds from the south.
We can see a bit of weather out to sea in the east - but in general it's a soft lovely day, not nearly as dark overhead as yesterday.
Cooler temps.   Lots of dragonflies.
Not a bad day for a book and a hammock.

TD 20 was just announced - centered just off the coast of Cozumel.
A look at the satellite map tells us that this is going to be a very wet weekend in Belize.
On Ambergris Caye breezes are cool and coming from the west and southwest, indicating that the low is tugging at us a bit.  The sea is very placid and calm, but water levels right are significantly above normal.
The last few nights have been wet also - frogs have come out of hibernation and are croaking in puddles along the sandy lane.
Moved the boat into shallow water - these rains will be boat-sinkers and cistern-fillers.
Good time to transplant anything in the garden - which I am off to do right now!

Stay safe all -

Sept 29, 2000 - A storm named Keith was born.  Location at the time of naming?  Pretty much the same as the yet un-named "issue" floundering off the coast of Nicaragua/Honuras.

Sept 30 - morning -  Keith was a tropical storm, nothing much to worry about (?!) according to forecasters.

Sept 30 - 5:30 pm - Keith is a minimal Cat 1, headed for Yucatan.

Sept 30 - 11 pm - Keith had grown to Cat 4 and was aimed directly at Ambergris Caye.

Sept 31 - dawn - Keith, Cat 4, stalled over Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker for about 36 hours.

**********************************
Fast-forward to 2005.................

Sept 28 - something is cooking in Keith's cradle.  Later today it might become a tropical depression?

And the next name is Stan (another guy?)  Sheesh.
I hope this isn't deja-vu all over again.

Last night we had a bit thunderstorm, lots of rain,
Today is clear and sunny.
The breeze is from the south, rather than the traditional north-easterly air-flow.   This must be due to Rita - that we are so far from her and still feel some effect is sobering indeed.
Our hearts go out to the good people in Texas and Louisiana.   We were in Texas last week, and witnessed an outpouring of sincere super-sized hospitality to the evacuees from Katrina.  We hope these citizens will receive the same kindness from others now that they are in need.

Suggested reading - Isaac's Storm, by Erik Larson.
A book about the Great Hurricane of 1900 that leveled Galveston and killed 6,000 people - a book about the awesome responsibilities of weather prediction - and about judgment calls on which lives depend.  The storm was a monster, but the disaster was exacerbated by bureaucratic rivalry, agency turf-wars and kerfuffles between the US and Cuba.   After you read that book you will be hard pressed to understand how anybody (especially if they grew up in Texas) can call Katrina "unprecedented'!

Good thoughts for safety go to all who are in the path of Katrina.  Thankfully those along the US coast have ample notice to evacuate.

On Ambergris Caye we have some effects from Katrina - nothing bad, but interesting.  In general we have a pretty constant breeze that comes in from the north-east.
Yesterday - dead calm.
Today at sunrise a light breeze from north-west.
Now at about 8:30 am, the breeze is coming in from the south-west.

Whilst watching that all the predictions for Katrina take her path north again, we who watched Mitch go south and east (away from Belize, down to Honduras);  and who got trapped in Keith (was going north and predicted to be a storm or at worst a Cat1 - instead hit east and Cat 4)  are well aware that when a hurricane is in the neighborhood, one must be on alert.

- RAIN
  • From: Diane Campbell <camp_123 at direcway.com>
  • Date: Sun, 21 Aug 2005 09:58:09 -0600
Last night we had intense rains, strong wind and lots of thunder and lightening.  I'd estimate that the rainfall was at least 10 inches.   Our cistern picked up 6 inches,  before the winds blew and disconnected the downspouts from the gutters.
Mainland rivers will be well above flood stage by now.

Now for the fun part - the automatic bilge pump on my boat decided to go on the blink  - I bailed it dry at 1:30 am, but the rains only intensified after that.   Could not go back out to bail again during the balance of the night because there was too much lightening.  I kept awake, watching for a window of opportunity but by 4 am the boat had sunk, so I went to sleep for a while.  At dawn the storms had abated a bit and I was able to rouse my neighbors so that they could bail their two boats (obviously having hulls better designed than mine for the sinking thing) in time to prevent them from going down.  We have sensational neighbors - a whole family of professional stunt-people, one of whom is also an engineer - kids, logs, ropes, blocks, tackel and muscle eventually got the boat off the seabottom, and bailed out - they thought it was fun (at least the kids did).    Now we wait fo the mechanic to come and flush out the engine.  My NEXT boat will be self-bailing!
Now for a nap - hopefully the rest of the day will be boring.
I don't even want to think about that weather-mass off the coast of Africa.

Everything is getting back to normal after the near miss with Emily. Most of the boards off the house, most people are back on the island. Finally got the boats and windsurfing equipment back together . Had a strong tropical wave through today 35-40 knots with some rain. sunny before and after though so the tourists were still happy.
Hoping for a quiet next few months.

All of our best thoughts are with the folks who got hit up in Mexico.  Looks like the storm is hitting the lovely city of Merida now.

Ambergris Caye -Monday morning, 5:30 am -  dead calm, cloudy, 80 degrees.   Lots of sea-grass on the beaches and some erosion, but no thing terrible up our way.

Northern Mainland Belize - Orange Walk and Corozal - reports yesterday were of torrential rain and some strong wind.  Chetumal Bay did not empty out as predicted.

***************
Sunday - morning weather was beautiful.  Island buttoned up tight, most boats out of the water.  Weather man said not to worry.
Sunday mid-day - still sunny and hot, abnormally low tide, calm waters.
Sunday afternoon - from time to time long fingers of unusual clouds came in - the rain bands from Emily I guess - but without rain.  They were a bit spooky, and brought occasional wind-gusts.
4-5 pm - abnormally high tide  - strong swells and intermittent heavy chop.  Dolphins swimming past.
***************
No interruption of electrical power.

***********************

It will take a couple of days to remove boards from windows and to get residents back to the island, but in general things are just fine here.

Everything good so far, 9000 folks evacuated. Several businesses are having employees return from the mainland first thing this morning and guests should be arriving before lunch.

We have been very busy with the voluntary departure of our residents, as well as securing the Island and all the inhabitants who are still on the Island.

The Island residents that evacuated were moved by both the domestic airlines and the various water taxi's the numbers are as follows:
By Air : 1,765
By Sea: 7,200
Total : 8,965

That number is higher then the amount evacuated for Hurricane Keith, which was 6,720, this tells us we have increased in the number of residents and tourists since then.

Not many people about...most looking around too. About 1/2 of buildings boarded up. Seas still calm. Not much breeze. Looks like a possible spoke from Emily toward the northeast but very mild. Nice day...hot!!

Power is still on. Sun is still shining, beer is still cold. Just got done eating a crunchy falafel sandwich and some yummy roast chicken from Ali Baba's. Some vendors in park are open, Celi's deli, Bc's, Ali Baba's. And Coconet. Marinas store and bar, Antojitos and Tycoon are also open.

The Police and the BDF are patrolling the Town along with a small contingent of police/BDF to the north of the Island. There were no break ins reported last night which was excellent, since we have been having robberies every night in the past week, this shows that the Police/BDF have been doing a great Job.

The San Pedro Emergency Committee has performed extremely well and the Emergency Plan would not have been implemented so well, without the Whole Team's excellent effort.

The storm has not come ashore yet so we are still activated and continue to monitor Hurricane Emily.

Our current sunny and hot weather is the dead spot in such conventional (not being pushed back by an El Norde) is always the South West of the eye -- which is where we are at.

we're in as good of a spot as we can be for this one, provided it sticks like a magnet to that track. and it should.

Early Morning on Ambergris Caye.   Clear, calm, very wam.  We are approx 18 N and 88 W.   Local predictions are for not much wind, maybe a bit of rain.  The issue here is the water.  Forecsters predict that the Bay of Chetumal will empty, as it did in Keith.   This is a pretty amazing event - causing a massive rush of water from Chetumal  behind (on the west side)Amergris Caye and Caye Caulker.  Traditionally people have put their boats on this side of the island for storms.  During Keith this rush of water carried four people (tending boats) to their deaths, and caused a big pile-up of smaller craft in the town itself.  We anticipate that most people have avoided this potential mistake for Emily, but all are are warned to stay off the water and to expect water levels in the back to be considerably above normal - perhaps as much as 8 feet.
The effect on some of the communities in the back, like DFC and San Pedrito could be harsh as they have barely 6 inches of height above high tide.
We are also told to expect some beach erosion on the east side of the island - my guess is that the southern end (as in Keith) is more vulnerable to this factor as this is where the waters of the Bay will pass as they surge out of the area and then come back.

Officials in Belize are primarily concerned about the very northernmost mainland districts - Orange Walk and Corozal, and that concern is primarily related to floods.

We say prayers for those in Emily's path on the Mexican coast.

  • From: CDERA Information Unit <webmaster at cdera.org>

Belize Government activates Phase 2 of hurricane emergency plan
By NEMO Press Officer
Sat, 16 Jul 2005, 16:55

Belmopan, Jul 16, 2005 (NEMO) - Extremely Dangerous Category 4 Hurricane Emily
Strengthens Further as it passes South of Jamaica
At midday the Government of Belize declared Phase 2 or Red 1 of the Hurricane
Emergency Plan for northern Belize. It covers that area north of a line
extending westward from Caye Cauker to Lucky Strike and Crooked Tree in the
Belize District and San Felipe and Blue Creek in the Orange Walk District. This
includes San Pedro, Ambergris Caye and the entire Corozal District.
Residents living in this area are advised to prepare for tropical storm
conditions, that is, winds of 39 to 73 miles per hour.
The tropical storm watch for the coast of Belize from Belize City north to the
Belize/Mexico border remains in effect. A tropical storm watch means that
tropical storm force conditions are possible within the watch area within the
next 36 hours.
At midday the centre of Hurricane Emily was located near latitude 16.4 degrees
north and longitude 78.0 degrees west. This position is 717 miles east of Punta
Gorda, 680 miles east by south of Belize City and 668 miles east by south of
San Pedro, Ambergris.
Emily is moving toward the west north-west at 18 miles per hour and this
general motion is expected to continue for the next 24 hours. At this rate
tropical storm force winds could begin affecting San Pedro at midday on Sunday
and spread across northern Belize by 6:00 PM. Conditions would improve across
Belize by mid-afternoon Monday.
Maximum sustained winds are estimated at 155 mph making Emily a strong Category
4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale. Hurricane force winds extend outward
70 miles from the centre and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to
150 miles from the centre.
Hurricane conditions are not expected to affect Belize, but tropical storm
force winds could affect northern Belize. As Emily gets closer to Belize, the
area under tropical storm watch could be reduced. Nevertheless, residents
living in the watch area are advised to make preparations for tropical storm
conditions.

Emily is due to hit about 150 miles north of us in 38hrs time or so. Not expecting too much wind or swell as we are on the south side but you just dont know, we had a 40kn or so squall pass through early this morning. Other than that winds are currently east at 15-20kn. The government has advised tourists to leave and head for higher ground in the mainland, most are taking the warning as are many locals, so the water taxis and planes are busy. most people are also boarding up and securing boats just in case she decides to pay us an unexpected visit. No rain as yet just overcast skies

Dear Gert -

Pacific Tropical Storm Adrian is approaching the West coast of Central America.  It is on an eastern track, expected to cross into the Caribbean Sea.  NHC is posting advisories on their website.

Belize Weather Bureau posted an advisory this morning about Adrian.
Advisory said that the main threat to our area is "the potential for life-threatening floods" in the hills.  Rains may begin as early as Thursday.

Winter 2005 has been the hottest and driest on record in Belize.
On Ambergris Caye it is currently hot, humid, air is still and sky is moderately cloudy.
