- STRANGE WEATHER
  • From: "Steve Donahue" <tainos AT anguillanet.com>

So I'm reading about all this great weather everywhere, but it sure ain't in Anguilla!  It has been cloudy all day, with a light mist/rain falling all day.  Also, the wind is out of the north, as high as 23 knots.  I sailed to St. Martin this morning in some sunny weather, but the wind picked up and the clouds moved in, and I sailed back to Anguilla with a 20+ knot wind on my nose, waves breaking over the bow, and a light rain.  I had foul weather gear on and was still cold.  I couldn't even see Anguilla until I was about a mile offshore.  Maybe someone will send us some of that nice weather!

- DON'T TELL ME???
  • From: "Steve Donahue" <tainos AT anguillanet.com>

Someone look at the latest satellite loop for the northern Leewards, and tell me the rain is NOT now moving in from the northeast?  For days it was coming from the southwest, then Friday from due west (we got the same rain Puerto Rico was having), and now it looks like it's all coming back from the northeast.  Is there any way this rain will end?  We've had another 0.4 in. today in a bunch of short downpours, but it's been cloudy most of the day.  The sun was out this morning for about an hour, and the humidity immediately went to about 160%!!!

Maybe someday it will clear up, but not today.

Subject: WOULD YOU BELIEVE - MORE RAIN!!!

At 6:00 AM this morning, there was some strange, bright light shining in the
window from the east, but by the time we figured out at 9:00 AM it was the
sun (which we haven't seen in 7 or 8 days), it was gone. And yes - it's
been raining again. Last night we had 1.16 in., and there has been light
rain and thunder most of the afternoon. So this will give us over 9 in. of
rain this week. To make matters worse, there is almost no wind, and the
"no-see-ums" will carry you away!

Maybe some sun tomorrow.

So far, since last Friday, we've had 8.01 in. of rain - and still raining.  This past week, we've had more rain than in any month since Lenny in Nov., 1999.

I put a graph of the cloud cover (along with a depressing picture of what it currently looks like outside) at http://216.92.18.25/anguilla/weather.htm

Have a great day!

Finally got the trade winds back on Tuesday afternoon.  Yesterday morning, it was blowing  18 - 23 knots - perfect windsurfing weather for the first time in over a month.  So I got my board and sail set up at 1:00, got in the water, and the wind died to like 3 - 7 knots - and stayed like that for the day.  Lots of showers this morning, some thunder, looks like still more to come.

When it rains it pours!  We haven't had a bit of rain in 10 days, but yesterday, it started at 3:00 PM, and POURED until almost 6:00 PM - a total of 1.62 in.  Now the strange part - it only rained over a small portion of the West End - 1/4 mile east of here got no rain at all!  It maybe covered just a few square miles, and just hung here for hours.

It's a beautiful day here in Anguilla today, but no wind - the sea is like glass.  We had a "gust" of 5 knots earlier, but it is mostly "blowing" 0 - 3 knots.  It's going to be a hot one!

Cheers,

Weather stats for the month of September as well as the year to date for Anguilla have been posted at http://216.92.18.25/anguilla/

Also, had 0.96 inches of rain Friday over a 2 hour period, but was limited to only a few square miles on the West End.  People less than 2 miles to the east had no rain at all.

  • Date: Sat, 13 Sep 2003 17:20:28 -0400
While the sat pics show returns over us, and people are reporting swells, there is nothing here.  The wind has been out of the west all day (yuk!) at about 10 knots, there has been hazy sunshine all day (still is), and I can see no swells AT ALL either here or on the northwest coast of St. Martin.  Like I said - a total non event - doesn't even look like a shower.

- RAIN - FINALLY
  • From: "Steve & Suzie Donahue" <tainos AT anguillanet.com>
  • Date: Thu, 11 Sep 2003 17:54:30 -0400
For some reason, we on the West End got rain today - and a lot of it (relatively speaking!).  Had 0.66 in. between 3:30 & 4:30, then another 0.24 around 5:30.  But now the wind is 0 - and has been for awhile - and the sea is like a lake.  Also, it only rained on the West End - The Valley and East End got 0.00.  This has nothing to do with Isabel, except that she's sucking every bit of breeze out of here.  Maybe some more Friday or Sat. when she passes.

Have a great day.

Well, Fabian is about 200 miles northeast of us, and except for some very big surf, not much going on.  The wind has come around to the NW, but only about 10 knots or so.  Quite a bit of beach erosion on the south side of the island - the beaches were pretty much covered at both Cove and Mundays Bays early this AM.  The waves seem to have died down, but expect they will get larger again from the north.  At 1:30, hazy sunshine with some clouds out to the east.  Doesn't look much like rain.

So Fabian did a little bit of a westward jog in the past 18 hours.  Don't know about anyone else, but I'm going to really watch this one - it's doing all sorts of strange stuff.  Yesterday, the closest predicted distance to AXA was 285 miles - now it's 211, with tropical force winds extending 140 miles.  Let's hope for a jog to the northwest soon.

But as of 11:00 today (Thurs.), they have moved the predicted path almost 1 degree south - i.e., closer to the northern islands.

FORECAST VALID 31/1200Z 17.7N  51.3W

Don't like that they are moving it further south with each report.  Need to watch this one!

It has been very overcast all day long - dark clouds, and have not seen the sun at all.  But we have had a grand total of 0.02 in. of rain all day!  It looks threatening again right now, but who knows.  Sure could use the rain.

- DREARY WEATHER
  • From: "Steve & Suzie Donahue" <tainos AT anguillanet.com>
  • Date: Tue, 22 Jul 2003 10:40:30 -0400
It is mostly overcast here in Anguilla, with the wind gusts in the 25 - 27 kn. range (30 - 32 mph).  It was stormy all night, with the same strong winds, but we got only 0.22 inches of rain out of the system since 6:00 PM last night.  From the satellite pics, looks like most of the rain is out of here.  Sure would like to get some water in my 2/3's empty cistern (0.8 in. this whole month - nothin' really.)

There has just been another eruption at 9:15 AM EST.  Seems like the dust will be with us for awhile.  For the latest advisory, go to http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/VAAC/messages.html  Here is a picture I took of St. Martin, which is only about 9 miles away.  Pretty bad!

- ANOTHER WEATHER SYSTEM???
  • From: "Steve & Suzie Donahue" <tainos AT anguillanet.com>
  • Date: Mon, 7 Jul 2003 12:27:39 -0400
We have some type of a system moving through Anguilla, thou it's not part of the one to the south.  We have very hazy sunshine, but a lot of wind.  Yesterday in the afternoon, winds steady in the mid-20 knot range, with a guts at 2:00 PM at 30 knots (34 mph).  Much the same today, with a 30 knot gust at 11:00 AM.  Would love to get some of the rain from the south.
