Well is JOSE being born!!???  IT'S  way down south now...at 10 DEGREES!!!   and still in the middle of the Atlantic... but Hurricane hunter planes are coming south to ck it out...and that always makes me a little nervous!!!.... We think it is OVER   this late in the season..  will keep an eye out!!!

- so easy to forget..............

IRENE...  WE HEAR LITTLE OF HER....  she does not threaten Antigua... our island paradise... so we forget. so easily --   we are safe!!.
thank goodness john   has been on board watching what is going on... I ran away to Europe and forgot Caribbean hurricanes for a short while... DID NOT EVEN KNOW  #12 WAS AROUND....
but I am back.. and learning of Irene...  knowing what those people are going through makes me sad... I  was scuba diving off the ISLE OF YOUTH off Cuba a  few years ago...  the hurricane just passed over it...and I have spend  a lot of time in the Florida keys... there are several  "free" dolphin  facilities there...  sad for the people there...but sad for the marine life...they don't have any  place to got...  and I recall that in the devastating hurricane MITCH  off Honduras --  went to check it out in July....   the guys at Anthony Key told me several of their  dolphins  (in semi enclosures  ) disappeared during MITCH...nobody knows where...   one bright spot of that story is that  one very pregnant mother DELIVERED a HEALTHY baby dolphin during the storm...AMAZING...    Hurricanes are a nightmare... but  it is nature... so we have no control... but we still cope... the beauty of life going on...   I hope for the people in the path of IRENE  there is little personal damage.. and for the marine life...  and maybe little Antigua has escaped for this year.... we deserve a break..  still a bit early to breath easy....   and now I am writing a  book on  Caribbean Hurricanes over the past century...    seems I am forever linked to them and the hurricane hunters...

have dr.gray and his team (happily for us)erred or is that a gun in your pocket? meaning what is that s.w. of the cape verdes? otherwise, the fotos of abaco and the other n.bahama islands are  now too familiar for us all in the path of these storms; and with the rise in ocean levels over the past 50 years we are now all loosing our collective innocence about what we've always thought what our lovely tropical islands would forever be.

Today in Antigua  - at last on the east coast....   it is gusty south and west winds... not very pleasant, although it is cooling...
.. thank goodness GERT only gave us those swells;  He was pretty vicious with the sea off ST CROIX TOO... I went to fly him, as I told you... but he eluded me as he turned out to open water and for 3 days I waited to fly into him with the Hurricane Hunters and  each day the tasking of the mission from the Miami Hurricane was CANCELLED cause he was no threat to land  (it costs a pretty penny to play around in that C130 so they dont do it just for the heck of it!!!)...   Finally had to come home as the wait was getting a bit much...  so STILL WAITING TO FLY MY HURRICANE...  really dont mind if it is NEXT HURRICANE SEASON IF WE CAN AVOID BEING HIT THIS YEAR!! ...but wonder if there is any chance it might be IRENE  --the next one to be named... if it comes... hope John Fuller not right that something coming off that African coast!!!!  have to check it out!!    Hope GERT avoids Bermuda...

   GERTS A BEAUTY??
WELL JOHN FULLER... IF YOU SAY SO... SURE LOOKS LIKE A REAL  HURRICANE... AND I STILL SAY LETS ALL BE THANKFUL CAUSE HE IS TURNING NORTH!!
I know it is still on our doorstep and that makes us all kind of nervous... but  the turn is north and should be more drastically so over the next 24 hrs.  -  in the nick of time!!
so confident in this that at 11  am today I fly to ST CROIX  (so feel like  Antigua wont be  in the path!!..)   and  hopefully my next report to you all will be about  FLYING INTO THE EYE OF GERT... then I will reconfirm John's statement of him BEING A BEAUTY!!

WE SHOULD ALL GET DOWN ON OUR KNEES AND THANK WHATEVER HIGHER POWER WE HAVE ...
so should all those people in Florida... they could have been waking up to a different kind of morning...instead of going back to life as usual...

this morning it really does seems Antigua --and any land mass - is spared from the wrath of HURRICANE GERT -- now up to a wicked 125 mph Cat. 3 storm....blowing around out there in the Atlantic.  Looks like he will stay north away from anybody... I am still going to St Croix tomorrow to possibly fly into his eye... unless the mission is abandoned since he may not make landfall...  Having hard time getting into my hurricane this season.. Was ready to Fly into Cindy and she moved too far north to fly out of St. Croix...then was gonna  fly into Dennis and he was too far away (has to be at 55 degrees...so while waiting for him to move in,   EMILY developed and I had to rush back to Antigua... with the intention of  going back to fly Emily after she passed Antigua and developed into a hurricane...   but CINDY sucked EMILY up into her.. and again moved too far north to fly out of St. Croix.... then  was gonna go for FLOYD but  was watching him dance off our waters again concerned to leave home base in case he came our way...and now same thing has happened with GERT... and he may stay so far out he is not a player in this  storm season!   But will sacrifice the experience of the flight if it means NO LANDFALL for anyone...   Who knows... since there is a patch off Africa they are watching....maybe we have HARVEY BEING BORN!!!   Let's just get this hurricane behind us!!!

THINGS ARE LOOKING A BIT MORE ENCOURAGING ON GERT.. IT HAS MOVED UP TO 17.1 AND IS STILL  ALONG WAY OUT AT 45.3.    THAT MAKES IT MORE LIKELY THAT IT WILL PASS TO THE NORTH OF US.  I DELAYED JOINING THE HURRICANE HUNTING CREW TODAY TO WATCH HOW GERT WAS MOVING...  AND WITH THIS LATEST  SLIGHT TURN I AM READY TO GO....BUT NO FLIGHT TO ST CROIX TOMORROW...SO AM HEADING NORTH THURSDAY.... ASSUMING ALL STAYS AS IS..   We all know this is mother nature and no one tells her what to do so we should still watch  (remember the terrible MITCH last yr. that turned south again... very rare but it can happen!!! )   For now, it seems Antigua will be spared the terrible tragedy the Bahamas are now facing.  Thinking so much about them as we know what it is like...

well...am not surprised... we are  not nearly as threatened now as  the USA is..and my heart goes out to those in the Bahamas and along the US east coast...  but WE EXIST TOO..and so little is being said about  GERT...and yet it may only be a few days off our door step!!!   If it was not for GERT AND STORM 99 the little Caribbean islands might really be forgotten!!!     I  am seriously reconsidering going off island tomorrow... GERT dropped from 16.1  to  16 today... not good.. we  want it to turn north..  not wishing it on those above us....but maybe wishing it would "squeeze" between a space where NOBODY IS???   Made a last run to the grocery store this afternoon and ran into several " stocking up"... very few in Antigua take this thing lightly after what we have all  been through...
Still too early to tell but we have to be ready!!   thanks for those who love Antigua...for a million reasons... and have sent good wishes/ prayers... our little island paradise does not deserve this!!!

This weekend brought some well needed rain! It started late Saturday and
continued on well into last night. There was heavy rain and some
thunderstorm activity. A friend who lives on a small hill above Hodges Bay
reported some strong gusts yesterday evening that blew down chairs and
plants. Other than that we are just keeping a vigilant watch on TS GERT.

- GERT AGAIN!!!

  • Date: Mon, 13 Sep 1999 07:20:22 -0400
GERT DOES NOT LOOK GOOD FOR US!!   Don't like them  starting so far south... so lets all keep watching  just in case;   but some models show it turning north! Yea...  I am gun shy of hurricanes with good reason...   and once again - as with the last 2 close calls -- I am scheduled to go off island  tomorrow to St Croix TO FLY INTO GERT on Wednesday or Thursday if he has reached longitude 55... --(should be a hurricane by then;  now at 70 mph so only has to grow 4 more mph!) ... -  on my press pass with the HURRICANE HUNTERS...  So hopefully the track due west wont change my plans... If I get to go it will sure be a FLIGHT ON THE WILD SIDE and hopefully a good story to write!   BUT LET'S KEEP CLOSELY WATCHING THIS ONE ANTIGUA!

- interesting facts.....
  • From: "MARTHA WATKINS GILKES" <gilkesm AT candw.ag>
  • Date: Sat, 11 Sep 1999 19:46:33 -0400
FOR SOME TIME I  HAVE TRIED TO SORT OUT DETAILS ON THE ADVISORIES WE GET FROM  HURR CTR OR STORM 99...AND FINALLY SORTED THIS OUT..  For others who are "lay people"    IT MAY HELP SOME OF YOU...

ANTIGUA IS LOCATED 2566 MILES (4130km)  OR  2230 NAUTICAL MILES  FROM THE CAPE VERDE ISLANDS (ACTUALLY FROM AMILCAR CABRAL) as the crow flies....
so since they always say something  has developed off the Cape Verdes  and tell us how fast it is moving (although that changes as is comes across the Atlantic... )  DIVIDE the mph it is moving by the above miles   ( if it is already so many miles off the cape Verde's subtract that) and it will tell you APPROXIMATELY  (and lots of things change that ....) how many days till it is in "our neck of the woods"...    It is not exact forecasting but sort of helps us know HOW LONG TILL THE NEXT ONE!!!    Hope it helps.....
BY THE WAY...the forecast track of TROPICAL DEPRESSION #9  for the next couple of days is right along 15   .... so lets watch it CLOSELY...

HERE WE GO AGAIN...   #9  JUST FORMED AT 12.3 AND 24.7   --  LONG WAY OFF BUT STILL  SHE HAS FORMED!!!  GUESS THIS WILL BE GERT  THAT JOHN AND I TALKED ABOUT... BUT THEN WE ARE IN THE PEAK AND  LIVING IN PARADISE AINT ALL A BOWL OF CHERRIES!   SO WE HAVE TO TAKE THE GOOD WITH THE BAD...   HEY GUYS...BE SURE YOU USE THIS LITTLE FLOYD SCARE TO IMPROVE YOUR HURRICANE READINESS IN CASE.... AS  FRED SANFORD SAYS...    THIS IS THE BIG ONE!!!
FOR TODAY..  IT IS STILL REALLY BAD WEATHER ON THE EAST SIDE OF ANTIGUA.... STRONG GUSTS CONTINUE....HARD RAIN ON AND OFF...THUNDER AND LIGHTENING..    AT LEAST I AM FINDING ALL THE CRACKS IN DOORS AND WINDOWS AND PLUGGIN THEM UP FOR FUTURE RAIN SQUALLS!

  • Date: Sat, 11 Sep 1999 08:21:07 -0400
Good morning...the night...and still now on this early Sat morning -  is much more stormy than anything I personally had when FLOYD was on our doorstep!   The night was full of lightening/ thunder/ strong gusts... what I did not move blew around  (potted plants blew over...few pots broke..etc...     so  we are just thankful we did not get the BRUNT of it and just  got the  "outer bands"...  still to gusty to even start the clean up! have HAD SOME RAIN BUT NOT AS MUCH AS HOPED   FOR.
I think John Fuller is right.... that next big patch coming across is of concern and we just hope if it does BECOME GERT  (the next hurricane name.... )  it will be friendly to our little paradise and turn north!!!

good morning from little antigua-it seems we're in the very southern outer band of floyd-lots of thunder, lightning and rain.my dogs are not like matthew of st.maarten's dogs, they seem to be totally oblivious to the peels and cracks of thunder.wind now south of west-10-15 mph.that system that is swirling off africa looks very interesting-it is the first true cape verde storm of the season and it  will be interesting to watch its march across the ocean-i think it is the foetus of GERT.hope it's as friendly as our GERT.

NOT A LOT OF RAIN YET..AND WE HOPE FOR THAT...  IT IS 5:30 PM SO WILL BE GETTING DARK SOON....I HAVE A FEELING WE WILL BE IN  THIS FOR THE NIGHT...   BUT  THEY SAY THESE ARE JUST THE OUTER FEEDER BANDS OF FLOYD!     THANKS TO THOSE OF YOU READING  OUR REPORTS WHO HAVE EXPRESSED APPRECIATION OF NEWS!

It's good to hear that FLOYD has passed Antigua, it is even more relieving to
see the letters that are being put on the page to let us overseas know what's
happen. I have just move to the US, and it seems I can't run from these storms.
It looks as this one will pass close, lets us all pray that we don't have any more
disasters in this region.
Keep up the work John, Martha & Alan.

  • Date: Fri, 10 Sep 1999 08:27:09 -0400
WOW.... we are lucky this time it seems... FLOYD is up to a HURRICANE  - 80 mph.....but has moved up to 18.9  -- more north of us.. so seems we wont get too much.  Our local forecasters say we will get rain off and on next next 24hours... ALWAYS welcome that in our little paradise!!....and we will get some gusts from north/northeast during the day and  from west south west tonight...  but nothing to be overly concerned about.
This has been a good test for gettin ready in case one of those masses off Africa really does come..... and I have improved a few things on my check list!!    Will think of those islands to the north of us and hope FLOYD likes the OPEN OCEAN and leaves them be...

We are still under a tropical storm watch but there was nothing
significant to report from Antigua. The wind was changing directions oftne
yesterday evening. However, it predominatly blew from the NNE at my
location (Lower Fort Road - just north of St.Johns).

There were some gusts early in the morning which is part of the reason we
lost power after hearing a loud crack. The sky is still very overcast but
no rain at the moment.

It is 3:30 a.m. and the first hard rain shower has just come.....there have been flashes of lightening all night...makes it  hard to sleep....Just read the 2 am update....FLOYD is now 230 miles off Barbuda... Antigua's little sister island... the storm winds extend out 175 miles so that puts it about 5 hours away until we start getting the storm force winds (if the storm continues at 10 mph!)  At least it has not become a hurricane yet; after going through LUIS AND GEORGE makes it not seem so bad....but we know  70 mph can do a lot of damage too!!      thank goodness for the information we get from the HURRICANE HUNTERS (check out www.gobeach.com/hurrhunt.htm for more on how they help us get through these storms!     AND FOR GERT AND www.gopbi.com/weather/storm    keeping us posted.   The eye has also moved up a bit to 18.4 so that is good....a bit further away from Antigua...(our airport is 17.5)   still have a bit more to do  in final preparations at  first light...  It is "bird land" around here  and have caught 14 of my 43 love birds... so have to catch the others soon......plus,   I  hope my free flying Moluccan cockatoo!  She comes in first light to feed....just in time.... will try to keep you posted on things.

Antigua is breathless tonight... every. ceiling fan in my house is whirring around... there are cooling, refreshing puffs of air from the north from time to time, reminding us FLOYD is there... It is hard to believe...except we have been down this road before and know that it sometimes forks with ---as john said.. unpredictability...nature...   It is hard to believe.....  I see stars... our tree frogs are chirruping away... lots of people are doing nothing... they say it will pass us.... I have done a quite a bit with moving "blowable things"... the  movement has slowed down to 10 mph so we have some more time before feeling any thing...
Maybe it will still turn north...

Well it seems we are gonna get the impact from the north... at 2 p.m. he was 18 north 56 west... moving at 14 mph.... that puts FLOYD with us in about 22 hours.. should feel effect before  - of outer bands.... and if he keeps coming due west....which is  very likely as the system above him that was  pulling him north is breaking up....   the main impact will be about 60 miles away from us.... with 60 knot winds!!!    so lets get ready

We have already had a change of wind direction. The upper air flow is now out
of the north which causes me to think that it is closer than we think. This
is exactly what happened during hurricane Georges. We have have bands of
showers coming very heavy with clearing in between. I wonder if this could be
the outer bands? Looking at my satellite photos it looks like it is coming
right at us but we still have no watches or warnings. Please keep us updated
and we will do the same for you.

It's not a hurricane... but it is a disaster!!  For those of you interested in our live down here... the Montserrat Volcano blew on Friday night late...and dumped ash/ grit on us early yesterday morning!   A mess... but no earthquake so guess that is something to be thankful for!?!?   site on the volcano is below...but it was last updated on Aug. 23rd so this latest is not there yet!  Lets hope she is quiet for now... and at least no hurricane activity!

the southern tail of cindy/emily is slowly moving past us with south winds 5-15mph.actually it's very beautiful, the sea is calm and deep purple in the deep, which is what it should be,the atmosphere is cristal clear-the montserrat volcano hasn't been more visible than it is now.there was a small eruption yesterday and the south east winds took the powder white ash northwest between us and nevis and st.kitts.last night just after midnight we had an earthquake which awoke just about the whole population except me! no apparent damage but frightened all who felt it an apparently made a terrific sound.can't imagine why i didn't feel or hear it.the atlantic looks clear all the way to africa.as gert says so far so good.but with no storms showing up CH PAGE won't get a lot of hits!!! and the storm freaks( and windsurfers(shredders)) are getting antsy and impatient.que sera, sera.

HI GUYS and GIRLS again... Have just returned to Antigua and  things are looking a bit better for us in Antigua .... seems Emily may track more to the east of Antigua... so we are hoping for that. Still we should all watch her and see... she's not too much right now but  we all know things can be weird with Mother Nature and STORMS and HURRICANES..   They do say Emily  will become a hurricane in a few days!    For now the weather is beautiful in Antigua and we would never guess there is nasty weather out there!   If things pick up will let you know!

I am sending you this report from St Croix.... and am heading back to
ANTIGUA tomorrow... latest reports on EMILY from reconnaissance aircraft
indicate she is moving more left than earlier...(closer to antigua!)
(according to National Weather Service -Tropical storm Emily # 5 and based
on data from aircraft flying the storm...

Forcast position put her in 48 hours (Friday 2 p.m.) at 17.0 N and 61.0
    W... over Antigua...
she is NOT A HURRICANE yet.... intensity is 55 knots. Sure not a
LUIS, but will be enough wind that we should pay attention to her!

cindy never seemed to pose a threat to us here although we were always casting sidelong glances at her as one does to a bad but cowardly dog.denis' genesis passed through sunday and gave us all a good wetting with thunder and lightning and no wind-----BUT where the hell did EMILY come from? best forecasts have her over our area by wednesday or thursday.she's tiny but already quite strong.she'll definitely give some of us some strife.what an unusually quick birth!we'll keep you posted.

    - CINDY!!!

HI AGAIN FROM ANTIGUA... Well it sure looks like Cindy will be a HURRICANE SOON... been watching BRET and thinking of all those poor people along the Texas/Mexican coast...  We hope for their safety.    AND WITH CINDY...   we just hope she does make that north turn most think she will.  But being  "gun shy"  after our last few years of hurricanes,  those of us here are on the cautious side and are watching things closely.   I  go up to ST. CROIX on business tomorrow but will be logging on to STORM 99 daily, ready to hop on an airplane south if needed.      If she IS NOT COMING but does become a Hurricane the HURRICANE HUNTERS arrive in St. Croix early next week and I will FLY THE  HURRICANE WITH THEM!!   So I  will be reporting to STORM 99 on this incredible experience to let you guys know what this is like!
Back in touch in due course....

    - ANTIGUA STILL WATCHING!

    EARLY SATURDAY MORNING...
Good morning to those of you who care about us way down here in PARADISE....  we are still watching CINDY;    as you  know if you are reading this....she has increased from 40  to 60 MPH... looks bad for development and for someone along her potential path, eventually...  but still early days...
If she does turn north  and is not  poses no threat to ANTIGUA...this may be MY HURRICANE to fly with the HURRICANE HUNTERS  on a press pass... Have been on their press list since last hurricane season.   I KNOW...many think I am mad to even consider this...but how often does an individual get to fly into the EYE OF THE STORM!    For my first story and more on the valuable role these courageous guys and girls play in our lives down here in the islands check out my first story on them.... www.gobeach.com/hurrhunt.htm
The information they provide is invaluable to us as it gives the specific details that a satellite cannot.... and now, my link to them gives me THE FINGER ON THE PULSE info in a storm situation..  Have been in email contact with them at Kessler Air Force Base  since CINDY came on the scene  AND AT THIS STAGE,   THEY THINK Cindy will turn  NORTH and won't hit Antigua.. so we are watching and waiting... Too early to do any storm preparation - except what should have been done on JUNE 1st like stocking up on supplies/fuel/ etc....   Will be in touch...

    - HELLO FROM ANTIGUA

    • Date: Fri, 20 Aug 1999 21:12:52 -0400
Well,  here we go again!   We here in Antigua have all been made VERY AWARE of TROPICAL STORM CINDY brewing out there and are just hoping a north track will happen.  Our weather forecasters have made people very aware (without undue alarm) that we should all monitor this system.  Tonight's forecast said it was at least 6 days from us if it continues as is.   Ironically nearly one year ago (in Sep) I was run off from the US  VIRGIN ISLANDS where I was on a writing assignment  -- to head home to Antigua to batten down the hatches for HURRICANE GEORGE...  this weekend I am scheduled to go TO THE US VIRGIN ISLANDS on a writing assignment.... and it would be ironic if ONCE AGAIN a hurricane chases me back home.   We  hope Antigua is SPARED THIS YEAR.   We will try to keep you posted!

all's quiet on the eastern front.many old wives tales being dug out--e.g.--when the date palms produce in abundance, as they're doing this year,a hurricane is sure to come; or if kingfish bite late,or if the tree frogs sing in july,or if there is an early mango crop--judging from these we'll be wiped off the eastern caribbean by the end of september-----whatever.

    - Hurricane Season

: hello from antigua.its the first day of the hurricane season and we've all
: been tight-lipped until today as if only now can we give our opinions.we
: havent had a year in living memory like this one: so little wind( i.e. no
: strong high pressure n. atlantic systems) extreme heat, both together with
: very warm sea temps.everyone seems to have decided that today was the day
: to talk about it.with all the talk it seems that we'll be well prepared, but
: from all accounts it appears that we better be.Gray's "more westerly"
: forecast is worrying for us in the islands--it seems as if we are often
: forgotten in the larger scheme of things.Gray also compares this year to
: 1950--an unfortunate comparison as 1950 was THE hurricane year for us in
: antigua--a life event for most antiguans then living!
: we'll be watching and listening, preparing once again, and no doubt
    : eventually praying (and hammering).
