Another update is in place at our hurricane hotline,
http://AntiguaToday.com/hurricanes . The page lookd pretty similar but
detail are changed and there are updates for more hotel, such as
Hawksbill, Galley Bay, and others that some of you were asking about.
Antigua is looking pretty good again and most hotels are up to speed. I
have been distracted for a week with stage design and special effects
for a big Calvin Southwell fashion show so it has taken a while to
revise the hurricane files. Life is pretty well back to normal and there
is a bit of an economic boost provided by cruise ships stopping here
instead of St. Martin.

More soon.

See you in Antigua,

Nick

we expect to have rain and wind and big seas in hurricanes in hurricane season-but not a few weeks before christmas-and now hot behind the heels of lenny we have a terrific northwesterly with gale winds, huge n.w. swells and more rain.give us a break.enough already.the horse is going to explode.

I have the first major update in place at
http://AntiguaToday.com/hurricanes now. Initial impressions off damage a
few specific hotels. We will be pretty busy over the next two days with
a glut of cruise ships coming to Antigua... in part because of damage
elsewhere, so I won't get to add too much more until the weekend.
Weather is great right now.

TUESDAY NIGHT.  NOV 23RD......   ONE WEEK AGO MANY OF OUR JEWELS OF THE ISLANDS WERE JUST STARTING WHAT WOULD BECOME THE WEEK OF HELL FOR PROBABLY  MORE ISLANDS THAN WERE EVER BEFORE HIT BY ONE HURRICANE!!  (HAVE TO CHECK THAT OUT BEFORE CONFIRMING BUT PRETTY SURE THIS IS CORRECT...)    AND NOW ONE WEEK LATER... WE ARE HEAVY IN THE CLEAN UP/ REBUILD STAGE.  WATER IS STILL FORMING LAKES ALL OVER THE ISLAND. AND I AM  DRIVING BY JEEP OFTEN AS CARS DON'T MAKE IT THROUGH THE "HURRICANE LAKES"... (WHICH WILL DRY UP QUICKLY WITH OUR   RESUMED TROPICAL SUN... )  LENNY REALLY DID A NUMBER ON US.. SO MANY NAMES LOCALLY...  "wrong way lenny"  (CAUSE HE CAME AT US FROM THE WEST!!}      ANTI MAN LENNY -  A CARIBBEAN TERM FOR   A PERSON OF THE OTHER PERSUASION...  THUS LENNY  DOING WHAT HE SHOULD NOT!!!      AND LEFTY LENNY  (CAUSE HE WAS COMING FROM THE LEFT )    AM SURE LENNY WILL HAVE SOME CALYPSOS   SUNG AND NAMED AFTER HIM IN THE UPCOMING CARNIVAL SEASON WHICH  MOST OF THE ISLANDS  HAVE...   WE HERE IN THE ISLANDS HAVE TO FIND SOME HUMOUR IN THIS OR WE COULD NOT STAY.... COULD NOT GO ON... COULD NOT FACE ANOTHER HURRICANE SEASON...  SO WE CONTINUE WITH THE  REBUILD... FOR SOME  JUST MOPPING UP AND  BUCKETING OUT... FOR OTHERS MORE TRAUMA..  FRIENDS WHO LIVED IN A FAB. RESTORED  1800S SUGAR MILL HAD IT BLOWN UP IN AN ELECTRICAL FIRE  FROM EXCESS  WATER.. AND THEY LOST EVERYTHING... THANK GOD THEY WERE NOT STAYING THERE...   SO FOR SOME THERE HAVE BEEN GREAT LOSSES...  BUT THE SUN SHINES NOW AND WE ARE GETTING IT BACK TOGETHER...

    Subject: Slowly emerging

Finally re surfacing after loosing my system. Struggling along with an
old machine. By now you will have the broad picture from other
correspondents. Today the sun shines gloriously. In a forum like this
hurricane page we tend to focus on the damage but most of us have much
to be grateful for. There was no wind damage to speak of and damage was
limited to beaches exposed to the swell and areas in the path of flash
flooding. Generally speaking power is restored.... it didn't go out in
many areas.... and the clean-up will only take a few days in most
places. There are some notable exceptions including Jolly Harbour where
there are questions over power and water supply. Some hotels are only a
bit soggy with beach and facilities in tact. I will start posting
details of what I know on my hurricane hotline at
http://AntiguaToday.com/hurricanes later today if I can find a ftp
program for this old machine and my sporadic phone connection will
allow. My regular phone is down so I am currently on the fax number.

Cruise ships are already cleared to return next week, in fact, there
will be an increase caused by damage in other islands. Although damage
is certainly worse than I had hoped, with many roads ripped up I feel so
sorry for those islands that sat in the worst of the stom for hours. It
MUST be so much worse there. I will will need a visit to each hotel to
be sure of flooding damage or erosion so that will get posted next week.

While I was cooped up I finished a new poem that I started during Jose.
This seems like a suitable venue for it's first airing....

    TROPICAL DEPRESSION

    There's a hurricane a comin'.
Hear it knocking at the door.
    There's a hurricane a comin'
and it ain't no fun no more.
    There's a hurricane a blowin'.
Hear it pounding on my home
as the rain flies by my window
and the sea is filled with foam.

    There's a hurricane a crashin'and a smashin' all around,
and the leaves are like confetti that it scatters on the ground.
And it groans amid my galvanized
    and shakes my window pane.
How I wish that it would go away
    and not come back again.

The awesome power of Nature is too vast to comprehend,
    as sea
    and wind
    and earth combine
    and giant palm trees bend,
    as rain becomes a torrent
    that hacks into the land,
    as power fails
    and moments merge
    this isn't what I planned.

The raging of the hurricane appears to never end,
I know that once it passes
we'll soon be on the mend,
    a week
    a month
    of debris
    the sun will shine again.
But somehow in the midst of all
I just can't wait till then.

I really love this island where I settled with my wife.
I really love this island with it's casual way of life.
    The beauty of the sunset
    the sea upon the beach
    the lapping of the ocean
    my toes within it's reach.

    I really love this island
    and sailing on a breeze,
    the glamour of the tropics
    the drama of the seas.
    But Nature can be sneaky.
    We never know for sure
    when her mood will alter
or what she has in store.

    There's a hurricane a comin.
    (Water seeps across the floor).
    There's a hurricane a comin
Watch the bending of the door.
    My banana trees are breaking
and my pool is filled with mud
and the house is slowly filling
    with some soggy
    leafy
    crud.

    There's a hurricane a comin'.
Hear it make that eerie sound.
See the hedge a leaning sideways
and the fence upon the ground.
It's the seventh in a decade
and its now an awful chore.

How I wish that it would go away.
    This ain't no fun
    no more.

Had few emails from some  who thought I was like Scarlet O'Hara...gone with the wind!!!...  but it was only my phone lines GONE...   lines have been out since Friday Morning soon after I sent you a 7 a.m. report... and only came back this morning... Sunday...   but still no ELECTRICITY  -  THANK GOODNESS FOR GENERATORS!
The last day  of LENNY was   hell... because,  as John Fuller said,   no one seemed to know just where  Lenny was.... and there were several times of calm and debate on the local radio that  THIS IS THE EYE... then there was the most INCREDIBLE LIGHTENING SHOW YOU CAN IMAGINE LATE FRIDAY NIGHT.     Several very dramatic cloud to earth strikes that were like a parting salute from LENNY  as he passed on by Antigua out to into the Atlantic,  declaring he was master!! --and he sure had been as he was ripping through so many of our beautiful islands.
Even though we have not had the damage Antigua had from previous hurricanes,  life is disrupted and a bit of a mess for all cleaning up  not just the garden mess but  mud, etc.  from the excessive rain!
For me, the most welcome site... AFTER SEEING LENNY PASS ON BY... was my wild cockatoo winging her way home  on Saturday morning  -  having survived another hurricane in the open!!!  She's getting to be a pro at that.....   and as soon as the wind calmed a bit more I opened the cage and set my 20 love birds free again!   They are flying all over the hillside here  -- happy to be free once more!!!
Today is a beautiful sunny,  typical Caribbean day... it's hard to imagine the last 3 days now... I feel like I lost a week of my life...and guess we all did... but now it is time to pull it together  AGAIN... and get on with life... Thanks to all of you who were concerned and cared about us during this ordeal!!

    Hi,

I had some trouble with my laptop modem hence my silence. I am on my Mac
and attached/following are some pictures of Lower Fort Road yesterday
afternoon taken with a Casio digital camera.

Antigua was FLOODED. In recent history I am sure we exceeded all previous
flood records. ABS TV has some incredible video footage on last night. If
I can get my hands on a coy, I would sample some of it and put it up on a
    site somewhere.

    - Lenny looking for Antigua!!!!
    • From: accounts <accounts AT bingomania.net>
    • Date: Sat, 20 Nov 1999 01:24:32 -0400
John, I know my family contacted you. Thank you, I have already gotten in
    touch with them.

Antigua has more water than I ever thought I would see!!!!
At About 2:00pm I went with my soon for a ride(he is two years old and I
couldn't keep him inside any longer). We went to Fort James and were
impressed by the waves..........you should have seen him!!!
Run Away area is completely flooded, I belive it's the worse area.
Mackinon's, Crosbies, and Hodges Bay are not so bad, one thing is for
sure.....they won't have to water they plants for a while......
The Airport is not bad either even though the road is full of pot holes
    now.....huge pot holes......
I recorded with my video camera some of these areas, I'll enquire to see
what do I have to do so that you can see it.
At about 4:00pm we started experiencing thunder, lightening and heavy rain
again. It's been calm for the last three hours.
Even though this has not been as bad as you may think, someone, a dear
friend of mine, lost her life today, leaving behind her children (couple of
them very young). She was running with her children from the rain when she
suddenly dropped to the ground; by the time they took her to the hospital
she had passed away. They don't know the caused of her death yet but they
are anticipating that it was a heart attack.
I would have liked to go and see her but I am in Woods Mall I and I can't
leave, the roads around here are flooded.
For all of you out there, please be with me when I say:

THIS IS FOR YOU LYLA, MAY YOUR SOUL REST IN PEACE. YOU WILL ALWAYS BE
REMEMBERED FOR YOUR KIND HEART. WE LOVE YOU.

    Sira.

NEVER IN MY 53 YEARS IN ANTIGUA HAVE I SEEN AS MUCH RAIN AS WE HAD THIS AFTERNOON.EVERYWHERE FLOODED.FOR THE WHOLE AFTERNOON WE COULDN'T FIGURE OUT WHERE LENNY WAS.TRUE TO HIS NATURE HE CHANGED SHAPE ,SHOT OVER TO US AS A TROPICAL STORM AND FRIGHTENED THE S--T OUT OF US.BUT IT WAS A MERE BLUFF.ALTHOUGH THERE IS A HUGE CB BETWEEN US AND GUADELOUPE THERE SEEMS TO BE NO MORE THAN THAT-R.I.P. LENNY.
WE HAVE HAD 25 INCHES OF RAIN SINCE WED. AFTERNOON,ACCURATELY MEASURED BY MY FRIEND VERNON HALL-PHONE 268-462 7374,IF YOU WANT TO VERIFY! A 1/2 INCH FOR EVERY HOUR FOR THE LAST 48 HOURS.
MUCH EROSION FROM WAVES,LOTS OF WASH OFF FROM RAIN--BUT IMAGINE WHAT IT WILL LOOK LIKE IN 1 WEEK--GREENER THAN IRELAND!
ROADS TOOK A LITTLE BASHING. GENERALLY WE'RE WELL OFF.MY HORSE WILL HAVE MORE GRASS THAN A JAMAICAN RASTAMAN.YES I.
