- St Maarten weather
  • By Barbara Cannegieter <barcann at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Thu, 8 Feb 2024 17:29:19 +0000

Good afternoon from a wet and rainy St Maarten.

St Maarten, like some other islands, got hit with a lot of rain last night. It has been raining off and on since then. And the seas have been rough.

There is no school today because of the weather. Our roads flood easily if there is a heavy shower, and its safer to stay at home. Businesses are open though. And there are two cruise ships in.

This photo is a screenshot from the camera at Sunset Beach Bar at Maho Beach, where people like to go to see the planes fly over. Its very popular with tourists. There is no beach right now since the heavy seas have taken away all the sand. Still there are people standing on the edge to watch the planes. I hope they are being careful.

Greetings from St Maarten.
It’s been a cool, rainy, windy day here.
The dogs have refused to leave the house.
Steady wind at about 18 to 20 mph, with higher gusts.
The gusts bring in rain showers.
I don't think the temperature reached 80 degrees today.
The seas are rough, and we are under a small craft warning.

It's very windy out there.
What we call the Christmas winds are here.

- Did you hear the boom?

This is not exactly weather related  but...
This morning St.  Maarten residents heard a loud boom! At first some of us thought it was an earthquake, but nothing shook.
It was very strange.
Facebook was flooded with people asking what it was. Reports from Anguilla also.
Well, apparently it was the Space X rocket, which exploded today.
Amazing!

Read a report about it here.

- Tail of Tammy
  • By Barbara Cannegieter <barcann at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Mon, 23 Oct 2023 14:15:41 +0000
Good morning
As you can tell from this video., we are experiencing the tail of Tammy this morning. This is the road going through Mullet Bay, which we know always floods. We had some heavy thunderstorms with a lot of wind and rain this morning.
Now it is breezy and drizzling.
Businesses are open, but schools are closed.
Tammy is not gone yet.

Now we are getting some rain from Tammy’s tail.
This photo shows how St Maarten, Anguilla, and St Barths just missed Tammy. Tammy was so close, and we had no rain, no wind, no high seas.

The sun is shining in St Maarten. Thankfully Tammy was a non event here.
Thinking of people on the other islands who weren’t so lucky. Hope there is not
much damage for them.

Hi Gert
Everything is closed on St Maarten. Only essential services are allowed to be open. The sun is shining and there is very little wind. The calm before the storm?
We are just waiting to see what Tammy will bring us.
The airport is closed but they could have stayed open because the weather is fine.
We have not really had any rain, only a few short squalls.
So far Tammy is a non event here. I expect the weather to deteriorate tonight into tomorrow morning.
I think St Maarten will get through OK, unless we get too much rain.
Hoping those in our neighboring islands stay safe.

St Maarten got it wrong today. They closed all businesses for the day and then let businesses open late afternoon, just when the heavy rains from the tail of Philippe started hitting us.
Lots of rain tonight. I am sure the roads are flooded. I hope people stayed home.
I took this little video of the rain coming down just now. My patio is flooded.
Hope everyone in our neighboring islands stay safe.

I just took this video from my porch.
Not much rain yet, just wind. I suspect we will get some rain later.
The island is closed up tight so no one is on the roads, which is good in case of heavy rainfall.
Sorry to hear about the flooding in the other islands. I hope everyone is safe.
And it's really sad about the fire in English Harbour.
Be careful, everyone.

Watching Lee gain strength is unreal and scary. The force of nature is awe
inspiring.
I am so thankful it is missing the islands.
It would have been catastrophic for any of us.
Breathing a sigh of relief.

It’s been a nice rainy day on St Maarten. Just what we needed. Some decent rain
showers that really soaked into the ground. But nothing extreme that caused any
flooding.
Crossing my fingers 🤞🏼 that we don’t get anything worse this hurricane season.

Thanks to the tropical wave moving through, we are experiencing a strong
thunderstorm with very loud thunder and intense lightning, but not much rain.
According to reports on Facebook, lightning hit the mast of the Coast Guard
boat in Simpson Bay, and some neighborhoods are reporting that car alarms are
going off.
My dogs are not happy.
It’s moving away now.
