- Tammy Leftovers - Saturday
  • By ‪Frank Goodwill‬ <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Sat, 28 Oct 2023 09:38:01 -0400
Good morning,

Pretty wet up in the Nevis Peak foothills. Tammy left us with a weather trough, an area of relatively low atmospheric pressure. This has resulted in some pretty wet weather since Thursday with a daily rain count of about 25mm (1 inch) in my area. It has included some heavy showers accompanied by thunder and lightning.

Friday evening/night water taxi and ferry services between St.. Kitts and Nevis were cancelled due to weather conditions.

Regular services are due to resume Saturday morning.

The weather forecast predicts the rain will ease off by Sunday with some sunshine Monday. We shall see.

Attached are some pictures of the gloom/wet weather this Saturday morning.

  • By ‪Frank Goodwill‬ <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Sun, 22 Oct 2023 19:40:05 -0400
Good evening everyone

Things have started to calm down!

It has stopped raining but there are some rumbles of distant thunder

The cloud is thinning out to the west with some rays of sunshine coming through. To the south it still looks pretty gloomy

Some power cuts around the Charlestown area and up the west coast this afternoon.

Nevis water department turned the piped water off in the Rawlins and Zetland areas. This was to safeguard there equipment.

Up in the Nevis Peak foothills my weather station measured just over 4 inches (100mm) of rain today. Most of which fell during the afternoon.

There was a lot of water run off from Nevis Peak as well. So pretty soggy under foot

Added a few evening view photos.

Good afternoon,

The sting in Tammy's tail is with us! Up in the Nevis Peak foothills it's pretty wet and we are living in the twighlight zone. Some thunder rumbling in the background.

Since midnight I've measured 1 inch of rain so far.

We are on the northern edge of a large rain band moving from the southwest to the northeast.

Should be fun landing at the RLB International Airport in St. Kitts and wanting to get to Nevis via a water taxi.

Good morning everyone.

The official "all clear" for St. Kitts and Nevis regarding Hurricane Tammy was issued at 7 am this morning.

Looking at the Guadeloupe radar there looks to be plenty of rain about following behind Tammy.

It is pretty wet and murky here at the moment.

- Hurricane Tammy - 5:30pm Saturday
  • By ‪Frank Goodwill‬ <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Sat, 21 Oct 2023 18:13:01 -0400
Good afternoon.

A light breeze and occasional showers this afternoon. Looking at the 5pm NHC Forcast Discussion #[4 :

Despite Tammy having passed just east of Dominica and Guadeloupe today, surface observations indicate that winds did not get particularly high at those locations due to Tammy being a very compact hurricane.”

I have a feeling Tammy will be a bit of a non~event for Nevis as far as strong winds are concerned.

We will still have showers from the rain bands though.

As well as the RLB International Airport being closed today,  the VWA airport on Nevis has been closed. There have been no inter-island ferries running between Dt. Kitts and Nevis.

The Nevis water department also issued a statement that they may cut the water supply from 6pm. This to protect their electrical equipment due to possible power disruptions from the Nevlec grid. As conditions are mild this probably won't happen.

As it is getting dark final pictures of the day just after 5pm

- Tammy at Saturday 4pm Update
  • By H Hallstrom <hwh888 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Sat, 21 Oct 2023 17:22:36 -0400
Greetings All,

As of the 4pm data report on Tammy, Nevis is less than 42% chance of winds in the 39 MPH range.
After 2am Sunday, the chances drop to 1%

That pertains to winds, not to rain.
I feel it's safe to saw Nevis is safe from Tammy & any damaging winds.

  • Date: Sat, 21 Oct 2023 14:48:57 -0400
Good afternoon,

This morning we experienced some gusty winds and showers/rain for a few hours up until 11 am. Since then it has been fairly quiet.

The centre of Tammy is just passing Guadeloupe. Rain radar indicates most of the "weather" is to the east of the centre. The "eye" of Tammy is about 100 miles to our southeast.

I've attached some pictures of the current view from my part of Nevis.

The RLB International Airport has been closed since 4 pm Friday.

Greetings All,

Nevis presently in the calm, rain has stopped and little winds to speak of. The main storm is still southeast of us and moving, slowly, very slowly in a NW direction. NHC is warning conditions will worsen later today this evening and into Sunday am. Conditions improving later in day tomorrow.

Stay Alert.

  • Date: Fri, 20 Oct 2023 20:47:25 -0400
Greetings All,

Looking at the 8pm NHC data the path hasn’t changed. Hurricane strength winds (75 mph +) extend outward 25 mi from center and storm force winds (below 75 mph) extend outward 125 mi from center.
Nevis can expect storm force winds as Tammy approaches east of our area in the early morning hours of Saturday and continuing through Saturday day time.
Exposed areas will feel the affect while more protected locations will be buffered by trees, hills, mountain. Advice is to remain inside. Sight seeing and traveling the roads is not the thing to be doing. Barometric pressure is slowly falling, now at 29.78”
Enough said!

Good day everyone,

Slow moving Tammy is still on track for a close pass by to the west of Nevis.

Most government departments and schools closed at 12 noon today. Businesses are shutting early this afternoon. Late afternoon inter island ferry trips look as if they being cancelled and the main water taxi service will finish at 4:30 pm today.

RLB International Airport remains open. An American Airlines flight (AA318) is due to land at 1:47 pm (slightly late).

Weather at the moment is overcast with a gusty breeze. A few showers are about.

Tammy is starting to appear on the France Meteo rain radars.

  • Date: Fri, 20 Oct 2023 09:31:36 -0400
Greetings All,

Just looked at the 5am data from NHC and the path of Tammy has moved further away from Nevis.
It is now projected to be approx 40 miles to our East at Saturday 1 pm.
We will be on the western side of the storm, which is to our advantage, as the stronger winds will be to the eastern side of Tammy.
We're still in the 50-60 MPH category.

Stay safe everyone.

- Latest "Tammy" projections for Nevis
  • By H Hallstrom <hwh888 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Thu, 19 Oct 2023 11:41:14 -0400
Greetings All,

After looking at NHC 8am data & predicted path this is what I see for Nevis.
The storm will pass to the East of Nevis by approximately 25 mi. Time wise, that will be 3-4 am Saturday morning.
Winds are forecast to be in the 50-60 MPH category.

This is the NHC Discussion as of 11 am Thursday.......
Tammy will be moving over warm SSTS as it nears the Leeward Islands,
which should allow for gradual strengthening despite the presence
of light to moderate wind shear. Given the current sheared
structure, the NHC intensity forecast is a bit more conservative
during the first day or two than much of the intensity guidance.
Despite that, the updated NHC forecast calls for Tammy to be at or
near hurricane strength when it moves near or over the Leeward
Islands. Additional strengthening is expected after Tammy moves
north of the Leeward Islands and recurves over the central
Atlantic.
So, based on those projections, today & tomorrow is the time to secure any loose items. Pool Umbrellas, chairs etc.

Regards,

Harry Hallstrom

- T S. Tammy - Thursday a m
  • By ‪Frank Goodwill‬ <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Thu, 19 Oct 2023 09:35:23 -0400
Good morning,

Looks if we have something to report on regarding T.S. Tammy.

"Data from an a NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicates that the maximum sustained winds are near 60 mph (95 km/h) with higher gusts. Gradual strengthening is forecast during the next few days and Tammy could be near hurricane intensity by early Saturday.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 miles (220 km) from the center."

The track seems to indicate Tammy will pass to the east of Nevis. Passage over Antigua and Barbuda appears more likely,

As usual a "health warning" is required on this as the storm's turn to the northwest can change.

We will probably experience the usual gusty winds, rainfall and sea swell. Staying to the east will mean we will be on the weaker side of the storm.

These forecasts can change as more information becomes available.  So prepare for the worse, but hope for the best.

A couple of pictures attached from this morning. A Nevis Nice Day!

Greetings All,

This silly storm seems to be driving everyone in the weather business crazy. It’s drifting NNW, now W, now stopped, now drifting S.

So NHC says it will eventually take a turn North. Not much for winds but it looks like rain will be on the menu Monday & Tuesday for Nevis and area. We will be on the western side of the storm so most of the rain will fall to our East.

Greetings All,

So far we’ve seen 16 named storms, all steered out into the Atlantic or off shore of USA East Coast.
All models have been quite accurate in predicting paths.
A strong El Nino this season and the heavy Sarah dust, reaching as far as Latin America countries, plus good Atlantic High Pressure ridges all helping to keep the Caribbean islands safe this year.
Just be aware October & into November can still bring a storm our way.
Not posting much but still watching.

  • Date: Tue, 5 Sep 2023 12:38:04 -0400
Greetings All,

NHC has now published tracking info and based on that data this will pass to our north but still close. Nevis/St.Kitts will be in the 20-30 MPH region. If a further shift to a more southerly path we can easily move into the 40-50 MPH region.
Present movement is a NNW direction. We will start to feel the effects Friday night and into Saturday morning.
More information to follow.

Starting to keep an eye above disturbance to our east. NHC is predicting it will become a storm in several days passing to our north but still very close. No storm tracks projected yet but I would assume in 2-3 days they will have a better idea just where and how close to the Leewards it will pass.
Stay posted.

Greetings All,

It looks like the European Models win on this one. Their models said this wave would take a southerly path. American Models put it direct over us. Yesterday it sure looked correct but by afternoon the sun was out and weather was fine.
When there’s choices you have to pick the worst of the choices and hope for the best.

Till next time.

  • By H Hallstrom <hwh888 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 18 Aug 2023 08:47:15 -0400
Greetings All,

The NOAA maps show this low pressure moving over the Caribbean Islands which includes Nevis/St.Kitts. Not a storm in any sense of the word, just a few days of clouds, rain and tropical downpours.

An area of low pressure could form in a day or so from an elongated trough of low pressure located several hundred miles to the east-southeast of the Lesser Antilles. Some slow development of this system is possible over the weekend and into early next week as it moves generally west-northwestward at 10 to 15 mph across the Lesser Antilles and into the northeastern Caribbean Sea. * Formation chance through 48 hours...low...10 percent.

I had a look at total rainfall year to date and surprisingly we are normal considering many areas reporting little or no rain. Nevis is on schedule for a normal 50 inch rain fall year.

Greetings All,

Looking at the low pressure area and NHC reports the projected path is south of Nevis/St.Kitts moving towards the Windward Islands.
Upper level winds will deter the development along with a strong El Niño this year. NHC discussion is saying formation is less then  a 50% chance of becoming a storm.
Will have another look early part of week as the depression moves closer.

Cheers from lovely Nevis, my base for a bit.  We had lovely rain last night. I love hearing the noise on the roof. It lulls me to sleep. Today, I hiked up Saddle Hill. It was a bit humid but no direct sun for the 1250 ft climb. Later, I headed to the rainforest and it’s quite overcast. I love it. Nevis has amazing wind. This is my first trip back in many years. It’s almost as windy as Bonaire often was. Wish I had a windsurfer. My meteoroligist contact suggests some weather, perhaps next week.  The rains in New England are mad crazy. Rivers are swollen and there is so much damage. Wild fires continue. It’s hard not to get emotionally overwhelmed

- Storm 3 Projections Mon afternoon
  • By H Hallstrom <hwh888 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Mon, 19 Jun 2023 15:51:23 -0400
Greetings All,

Based on the latest NHC date this is the projected path of this storm.
It is located approx 110 miles south of Nevis.

Maximum winds are Friday at 80 MPH - 70 KT
Sat they decrease to 75 MPH as it moves into the Caribbean Sea.

I will replot projected paths each day as published by NHC and post here.

From  NHC ......
1. The depression is forecast to strengthen and move across the
Lesser Antilles as a hurricane on Thursday and Friday, bringing a
risk of flooding from heavy rainfall, hurricane-force winds, and
dangerous storm surge and waves.

2. Given the larger than usual uncertainty in the track forecast,
it is too early to specify the location and magnitude of where
these hazards could occur. However, everyone in the Lesser
Antilles, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands should closely monitor
updates to the forecast.
