- CariCOF Predictions for 2016
  • By Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Tue, 31 May 2016 00:16:24 +0100
Good night everyone,

The 2016 Wet / Hurricane Season Caribbean Climate Outlook Forum (CariCOF) is currently underway in Roseau, Dominica!

This morning (Monday 30th May), event co-host Dominica Met officially announced the 2016 Wet / Hurricane Season Outlook for the Caribbean. Key messages include:

For June-July-August 2016:
- Gradual drought alleviation across the region.
- Where it has not already started, the wet season may start abruptly in June.
- Extremely wet spells may occur; serious potential for flash flooding and landslides.

For September-October-November 2016:
- Chance of more hurricane activity than in past five years.

Beyond November 2016:
- La Niña increases chances of a wetter dry season for most.

- Atlantic Hurricane Season - NOAA
  • By "NevisStorm" <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 27 May 2016 20:03:42 +0100
Good afternoon everyone,
The NOAA’s view of the up and coming Atlantic Hurricane Season.
27th May 2016.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center says the 2016 Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from the 1st June through to 30th November will most likely be near-normal, but forecast uncertainty in the climate signals that influence the formation of Atlantic storms make predicting this season particularly difficult.

So the influence of El Nino’s decline, Saharan Air Layer, Wind Shear and Surface Sea Temperatures to name but a few will have their part to play.
As Donald Rumsfeld said:
”There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don't know we don't know.”

Have a great day,

  • Date: Sun, 22 May 2016 20:06:31 -0400

Good night everyone,

Just to say it has been a really sunny Sunday today in Nevis. It looks as if it has been wetter over the last couple of days in the Winward Islands. A picture is attached for the weather today in Nevis.

Have a look at my weather station for how things are going in my part of Nevis.

https://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=ISAINTGE361

As always there can be interruptions to the readings due to grid supply issues (Nevlec) as happened on Friday and Saturday mornings. That's island life for you!

Have a great week,

Frank Goodwill

Good afternoon everyone,

A little on the wet side this Whit Monday afternoon over in Pond Hill with 14.7mm of rain so far today. Quite a few showers passing over but it is nice to get some rain.

The Guadeloupe radar gave a good view of the rain showers earlier today (see attached).

Interesting to see Saddle Hill with low cloud around it after one of the showers.

We are drawing close to the official start of the Atlantic Hurricane Season from the 1st June. Time start checking plans and preparations. As they say #itonlytakesone ....... and it doesn't have to be a major hurricane.... TS Erika that Dominica experienced last year, a quiet year.

Enjoy the rest of your day,

Frank Goodwill

- Rainfall over the coming week?
  • By Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Sun, 17 Apr 2016 15:06:56 -0400
Happy Sunday to all our readers,

The forecast for the coming week (17th to 23rd April) from Antigua Met Services indicates the possibility of significant rainfall over the North East Caribbean. It indicates totals in the region of 6 inches (152mm) of rain for the week. This would be good news for islands such as Antigua and St. Kitts that have suffered drought conditions for some months. As always there are no guarantees regarding rainfall totals as these can differ from island to island due to local conditions/geography.

The impact of increased rainfall will help farmers and water storage/reservoirs but will probably provide improved conditions enabling mosquitoes to breed (Zika Virus).

Link to Forecast from Antigua Met Services.

Today started of sunny but the cloud cover has built up during the day and it has become hazy.

- Cloudy and Wet Nevis Today
  • By "Weather Update" <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Sun, 13 Mar 2016 18:08:21 -0400
Good day all,

Not a sunny Sunday in Nevis today. It has been cloudy for most of the day up in the foothills of Nevis Peak and cool (low/mid 70’s F, low 20’s C). We had some showers and drizzle which has added up to nearly 1 inch/25mm of rain today, which is good, as it makes up a little for the scarcity of rainfall over the last year. It has to rain sometime.

The past week has been showery and towards the end of last week some strong winds and rough seas.

The weather should return to ‘normal’ by Tuesday but I doubt if today’s weather has impressed the passengers of the ‘Star Clipper’ that arrived off Pinney’s Beach today. No doubt a walk along the beach via the well trodden path for one or two of Sunshine’s ‘Killer Bees’ was required.

A picture of Saddle Hill with passing clouds is attached.

For Nevis weather forecasts/weatherstations/webcams/pictures see: https://nevisweather.blogspot.com/

Most of the ‘official’ forecasts draw on the VWA airport, Newcastle or the RLB airport, St. Kitts for observations. Due to elevation/micro-climates things can look different elsewhere on the island.

Regards,

Frank Goodwill

Good afternoon everyone,

For information for anyone interested in viewing weather data or pictures on
Nevis.

Harry Hallstrom's Upper Jessups/Banes Ghaut weather station can be viewed on
line at:
http://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=ISAINTTH34

He also has a weather cam set up on:
http://www.ustream.tv/channel/19953555

I have a weather station set up in the Pond Hill area that can be viewed on
line at:
http://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=ISAINTGE361

It includes a photo weather cam on the page.

There are a few Bloomsky Weather stations on the island that provide photos
during the day and a short time lapse photo sequence for the day (daylight
hours) is available after sunset Nevis local time

There are two at the Four Seasons Resort and two up at Pond Hill.

To access these online via a web browser go to:

https://map.bloomsky.com/ and put 'nevis' in the search criteria. Each pair are
close together so you will have to zoom in on the map to see each of them (+/-
keys bottom right of page)

A 'Bloomsky Weather' app can be downloaded from either the Apple Store or
Google Play for Smartphone and Tablets. This will require a new user to
register an account with an ID and password.

There are a couple of stations in Puerto Rico And also one in St Croix for
those interested.

Finally a bit more doom and gloom for Keith Pugh. Update on the drought from
the  Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA).

http://www.cdema.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1555:immediate-drough-concerns-for-cdema-participating-states-information-note-1-as-of-february-12-2016&catid=39:situation-reports&Itemid=347

This is impacting St. Kitts far more than Nevis.

- A Warning From CIHM
  • By Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Tue, 16 Feb 2016 08:57:33 -0400
Another twist to the weather in the Caribbean.

- Frank Goodwill

Caribbean should prepare for landslides and flooding.

BRIDGETOWN – The drought conditions which have affected the region since late
2014 to early 2015 are expected to subside by the start of the 2016 Hurricane
Season; but in their place the Caribbean should prepare for the risks of
landslides and flash floods.

This is the warning from Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology
(CIMH) in its latest seasonal climate forecast.

The forecast comes after many months of warmer and drier than average
conditions in the Caribbean fuelled by El Niño, a warming of the eastern
equatorial Pacific which has implications for weather patterns around the
world, including drought in many regions.

After the forecasted weakening of El Niño, its counterpart La Niña (a cooling
of the Pacific) may take over and affect the region in the latter part of 2016.
If the change takes place, it is likely to result in higher than normal
rainfall and stronger storm systems.

While near to above average rainfall is expected to ease the drought across the
Caribbean later this year, CIMH advises that areas experiencing long-term
dryness will be more susceptible to hazards such as landslides and flash
floods, once rains return in excessive amounts.

“Limited rainfall over the last few months has left many parts of the Caribbean
with dry, compacted soils,” says Adrian Trotman, Agrometeorologist and Chief of
Applied Meteorology and Climatology at CIMH.

“As a result, heavy rainfall will not be easily absorbed by affected soil which
increases the risk of flooding.”

Trotman says that recent advances in climate forecasting services for the
Caribbean now means that government planners and other bodies can make
important decisions based on seasonal forecasts, from three to six months in
advance.

“We know that advanced warning of an extreme event like a hurricane can help us
to be more prepared. The same now applies for longer-term climatic events and
this means that the sooner we can have an early warning of changing conditions
the longer time we have to prepare and be more effective at mitigating those
impacts.”

On February 17 at 4 p.m., CIMH will host a press conference at the Savannah
Hotel in Bridgetown, Barbados to discuss what the forecast means for the
Caribbean, and in particular how its early climate warning information products
can help the region’s six climate-sensitive sectors (agriculture, disaster
management, energy, health, tourism and water) prepare for and adapt to what is
expected to be a more intense wet/hurricane season.

This press conference will be facilitated by the well-known journalist and BBC
World presenter David Eades, who is visiting the region as part of an
international initiative sponsored by the World Meteorological Organisation to
highlight how climate forecasting services are being used to boost business and
economic opportunities in all Small Island Developing States.  (PR)

The Caribbean has been warned to brace for landslides and flash flooding as the
La Niña weather phenomenon comes into effect. (FP)

Well up in the foothills of Nevis Peak we have had a good soaking. About 3/4 inch of rain in about two hours and the temperature has dropped to around 71F (21C).

The water buts are full to overflowing again and it saves me watering the veggie plot.

I might have to dig out the thermals at this rate though, but I don't think I'll have to bother with the snow shoes - lol.

Update from the organisers on Tuesday 12th January 2016

For those of you concerned about the current weather conditions, we have a detailed forecast for you that should help put you (and our rowers too!) at ease: A low pressure system is tracking W to E and it has hit the fleet. The boats in the north are nearer the centre of the system and will get worse winds. Today has seen the strongest of the winds – around 30 knots going through the fleet.  The anticlockwise rotation means that crews will get N, NW, W, SW and S winds during the time it takes the system to pass. Imagine the winds spiralling anticlockwise whilst moving W to E and if you are in a boat at the bottom part of that rotation you will be able to picture the impact of the wind as it changes direction.

By Wednesday evening the crews will still be headed by significant winds but much less than Tuesday. By Thursday, winds decrease further with conditions better in the South. By late Friday all crews will start to get winds from the NE.

Although some of this might sound scary, our crews are trained to cope in difficult weather conditions. There’s not much to do other than to drop the parachute anchor and sit it out. Notice that the race tracker shows the boats facing the wrong way? This is due to the dropped anchor, which most of the crews have now done. The upside to the storm is that the teams get a break from rowing, and are taking the time out to update their blogs and social media pages. Every cloud eh?

Atlantic Castaways tweeted: “Wind 25 kn. 24 hrs enforced captivity in sweltering cabin. Playing Uno. "

Meanwhile in the Atlantic a low pressure system continues to be monitored by the US National Hurricane Center. Not a threat to the Caribbean or North America, but something a little out of the ordinary for January.

Attached Dec 2015 weather data. Had a weird glitch on weather data download. Rainfall data is accurate but no other data would download.
Davis Instrument says either a power surge or brown out might have caused the problem? Go figure????

We have been put under a water shortage watch by government of St. Kitts/Nevis.
I record a total of 29.45" annual rain fall up here on the West side of Nevis Peak & we are the first to get any rain.
So I can only think the other side of Nevis is getting even less.

Regards,

Harry

Good night everyone,

The Christmas Trade Winds continue to have an impact on us. Today we have had a number of blustery light showers which seemed to give us a total of half an inch of rain for today. It has also turned a little chilly at night here in the foothills of Nevis Peak with the temperature just above 70F but with the wind feeling a little cooler than that.

It looks as if the increase in showery weather will be with us for the rest of the week.

On the weather view/measurement front Bloomsky have now developed a PC web browser map so various Bloomsky weather stations can be viewed.

See https://map.bloomsky.com

The map can be searched for a particular location, etc.

At the moment there is only my station in Nevis and a couple in Puerto Rico up and running on the Caribbean Islands. There are plenty in the USA and other locations around the world if you are interested.

Frank Goodwill

Good night everyone,

I hope you all had a merry and safe Christmas Day.

Not since 1977 has a full moon dawned in the skies on Christmas. But this year, a bright full moon has added its own special present to the day.

According to NASA December’s full moon, the last of the year, is called the Full Cold Moon because it occurs during the beginning of winter.

This rare event will not happen again until 2034.

As for the local weather we still have the blustery 'Christmas Winds' to contend with plus an odd light shower here and there.

Attached is a picture of the full moon as seen from Nevis.

Good morning everyone,

We had an light early morning shower at 5am followed by a sunny start. So far today there has been variable amounts of cloud with sunny periods. The noticeable difference is the build up of wind speed from yesterday. Antigua Met Services have issued a hazard warning regarding this and the associated rough seas for the coming week. Good night everyone,

On Nevis we seem to have got into sunny periods with an occasional showers usually during the late afternoon or overnight. Sunshine and showers are great for the plant life as it springs up, though one result is that the grass cutting and weeding has increased. As December is here I am reaping a good harvest of Soursops, so it is back to making drinks and ice-cream!

Lapse time video for the day - https://youtu.be/exo9_RyLW50

If your interested in looking at still pictures as well as the videos you can download an app (Apple and Android) for the Bloomsky weather station. A PC web version is under development at the moment.

See: https://www.bloomsky.com/#app

There are three stations on Puerto Rico as well as one on Nevis. There was one at the Four Seasons Resort, Nevis, but has been off air for a couple of weeks. Of course there are plenty of other stations around the USA, Europe and elsewhere to look at.

Good evening everyone,

We had some heavy and persistent rain on Saturday morning but it cleared up by the afternoon. Sunday we had a short midmorning shower and the day stayed cloudy with sunny spells. It would appear that Antigua had some rain late Sunday but it passed us by to the east. Today has been bright and breezy with no shower activity. I have added a lapse time video f today's weather.

Good evening all,

Again a partly cloudy day with sunny spells. We had a few spots of rain at about 1pm with a more persistent light shower at about 5:30 pm.

As we draw closer to the end of the official hurricane season we have had a quiet period (except for Dominica). Though we have a good hurricane season a 'bad weather' scenario has been at work and will truly reveal itself as we enter the next weather phase 'the Dry Season'.  This has been below average rainfall and drought.

An interesting web page about drought concerning Puerto Rico provides interesting information:

I have attached another lapse time video for today if you are a cloud watcher.

On a positive note Nevis takes another step closer to geothermal power production:

The latest date for live production is by the end of 2018. This time around things look a little more promising.

Good afternoon everyone,

The weather up in the foothills of Nevis Peak has been pretty consistent over the last several days. The mornings have started off bright with cloud building up during the day. By mid-afternoon rain showers commence accompanied on occasion by thunder. On some days the evenings have also been spectacular with lightning displays to the south of the island. Today hasn't started so bright and the showers started earlier. We just had a good downpour as a brief shower passed accompanied by some window rattling thunder.

As I've said before I can't complain after the very long dry spell.

Enjoy your day,

Good afternoon everyone,

Showers continue to fall on the south side of Nevis Peak. I'm not complaining
as we need to do a fair bit of catch-up before the dry season starts. The
weather always amazes me on this 36 square mile island with its microclimates.
We have had showers off and on all day here, but I drove down to Charlestown

Drove back up to Gingerland and it was raining again.

Have a great rest of the day,

Good night everyone,

Today started with showers from the early to mid morning, some of which were
quite heavy. This gave us up in the foothills on the south side of Nevis Peak
0.4 inches of rain. A nice tidy sum but still a long way to go to catch up to
the normal season average.
Late afternoon was fine and as night has drawn in I am seeing flashes of
lightning to the South-East much the same as last night.
More showers tonight? We shall see.

  • By Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Thu, 15 Oct 2015 10:07:02 -0400
Good morning everyone,

We had a few showers yesterday and also some heavy downpours in the early hours
of this morning up in the foothills of Nevis Peak. The old rain gauge gave a
total of 0.24 inches total for this mornings rain on the south side here.

Today is cloudy with sunny periods and we might get some more showers. See
attached photo.

Looks as if we have been getting some relief regarding rainfall but the totals
for this 'wet season' are well below normal. This is raising some concern as we
approach our traditional dry season starting December.

Good evening everyone,

The tropical wave has finally caught up with Nevis. In the foothills of Nevis
Peak it has been raining continuously since 4pm (two and a held hours now) with
thunder and lightning and squally winds. Can't complain as it has been
refreshing and so far today the old rain gauge is giving me a reading of 0.98
inches of the wet stuff.

The hound has taken up residence in the house today due to the thunder and once
inside has spent most of the day asleep - it's a dog's live.

Good afternoon readers,

As the tropical wave passes us today we had some rain early this morning with
some thunder and lightning. The old rain gauge gave me a total of 0.11 inches,
not a lot but it would be nice if that was a continuous trend.

As we move into the afternoon cloud has steadily built up from the south and we
have had rumbles of thunder for about an hour. As I type this it has just
started to rain.

- Wet and Dry, Dogs and Ticks
  • By "Weather Update" <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Tue, 6 Oct 2015 20:06:08 -0400
Good evening readers,

Some islands have had more than their share of rain resulting in flooding e.g. Dominica, while others are still struggling with the effects of drought.

As well as the impact of these extremes of weather on agriculture there has also problems encountered by man’s best friend – dogs.

It can be a struggle for some island dogs at the best of times but with drought conditions there has been an explosion in the tick population.

An article from the BVI gives an overview of the various challenges being faced.

BVI, 1 October 2015 - The Virgin Islands continue to experience drought conditions with a significant reduction in rainfall recorded throughout the Territory.

“As predicted by the Caribbean Regional Climate Centre, mixed conditions are being experienced in the eastern Caribbean while the rest of the Caribbean ranges from severely dry in some islands to extremely wet in others.

Drought conditions are severely affecting parts of Puerto Rico with 20 percent of the island experiencing extreme drought conditions causing water rationing by authorities.  The drought conditions in Puerto Rico are affecting residents, farmers, as well as tourism, while islands like Dominica are seeing some of the wettest months on record.

Rainfall statistics accumulated by the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) for the period January to September reveal a total of only 7.25 inches of rainfall from the Paraquita Bay weather station and 10.26 inches from the Valley, Virgin Gorda station. Comparing the same period in 2014, rainfall totals were at 20.81 inches for Paraquita Bay and 19.99 inches for Valley, Virgin Gorda.
The drought condition is exacerbated by limited rainfall due to a harsh El Niño which has been affecting the region since the first quarter of the year.  The situation is being further affected by the presence of an abnormal amount of dust and dry air over the southern Atlantic which is hampering any tropical development.

The Caribbean Agro-Metrological Initiative (CAMI) has stated that the El Niño is now classified as strong with the possibility of further strengthening and lasting until February to March 2016.  This translates into below normal rainfall for the majority of the Caribbean and a continuation of the current drought conditions.

With school back in full session, Health Disaster Coordinator, Dr. Ronald Georges is reminding parents with young children and persons caring for the elderly to ensure that they are protected from the direct heat and that they are always hydrated. He said the main concerns in the health sector at this time are dehydration, increase in respiratory conditions and heat stroke, especially among children and persons working outdoors.

Dr. Georges added, “Although not many cases have been reported it is important that persons practice preventative measures. School administrators should ensure that children, especially those playing outdoors are given water breaks to refresh themselves.”

Dr. Georges also warned that any sporadic periods of rainfall has the potential for quick increases in mosquito breeding possibly resulting in dengue and Chikungunya cases.

He said, “Residents are being urged to continue to practice good hygiene and to keep their surrounding free of standing water especially during the brief periods of rainfall that we have been experiencing during the past few weeks.”

Another concern arising throughout the community and particularly among pet owners is the increase in ticks in dogs.  Populations of the Rhipicephalus sanguineus (brown dog tick) increase dramatically with warmer weather and droughts.

Chief Veterinarian, Dr. Michael Montrose explained, “You will see sudden increases in tick numbers in or around households with dogs. Our dogs are more outdoors oriented and pick up more ticks in the yard so the common anti-tick medications may not be adequately formulated for the tropics especially in the warmer months.”

Dog owners are encouraged to bathe their dogs with anti-tick solutions adequate for the tropics.  Residents can consult their private veterinarian or call the Veterinary Division at 468 6123.

Agro-meteorologist with the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology, Mr. Adrian Trotman has stated that the conditions are expected to worsen as El Niño intensifies into the last quarter of the year. He added that although some countries are experiencing periods of rainfall, this relief is predicted to be temporary and that the real concern for rainfall shortages will come late in the year.

With drought warnings in effect for some neighbouring islands, residents of the BVI are encouraged to implement management plans that conserve water.  Farmers are also encouraged to consider mulching as a way to reduce water loss due to evaporation.”

As I mentioned in my previous post a lightning storm passed Nevis yesterday evening (Monday) as it travelled west of the island. No rain and no thunder. See video link.

Regards,

Frank Goodwill

Good day everyone,

The last couple of days have been hot and this perhaps triggered some lightning storms yesterday evening at about 6pm. No thunder could be heard but a large storm passed Nevis from the South West of us.

This morning was pretty windy to start with with cloud and some sunny spells. By this evening the wind had dropped to a mild breeze.

Good afternoon everyone,

I had a look at the AccuWeather forecast for Nevis and it says 'Tropical
Rainstorm Grace will affect this area this evening to tomorrow afternoon'.
Tropical Rainstorm Grace - a new description of an ex-tropical storm for me.
Anyway the forecast predicts showers and thunderstorms overnight and tomorrow
morning. This sort of weather has a habit of missing a small 36 square mile
island but it would be nice to get a few rain bearing clouds deposit some wet
stuff on us.

At the moment it is humid with some hazy sunshine and cloud. The trade wind
breezes are a bit intermittent but nice when they blow. Nothing spectacular but
I added a view of Saddle Hill taken this afternoon.

- September arrives. Knock on effect of Dominica disaster
  • By Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Tue, 1 Sep 2015 22:40:20 -0400
Good night everyone,

After all of the 'excitement' generated by Tropical Storms Danny and Erika with
the 'fish storm' of Hurricane Fred it's nice take a weather break.

Today in Nevis it has been cloudy with sunny spells with the weather forecast
mentioning scattered showers, so scattered none arrived here.

A couple of photos to show the views.

One result of Tropical Storm Erica was that the u-17 ladies football (soccer)
team from Dominica who were playing in a FIFA qualifying tournament earlier
last week in Nevis were stranded. Fortunately the Four Seasons hotel put them
up while arrangements were made for their return journey to Dominica. They are
now safely back home.

Another problem that will probably effect  Antigua and Barbuda and St.
Kitts-Nevis. Fresh food supplies brought over from Dominica will be disrupted
due to the storm damage to the island. It also highlights the impact on the
livelihood of Dominicans involved in this trade.

Good morning,

Overcast this morning but brightening up with a light easterly breeze.. We had
a little more rain during the early hours of this morning and may expect
further showers today and tomorrow.

The morning has been spent so far gathering up small tree branches and some
"windfall" mangoes.

It is now 20:40 hours and TS Erika appears to be on the way out. The rain has slowed down as well as the winds. We got off in the Zetlands area with no damage that I could see and finally got the rain we needed. We were indeed fortunate compared to other islands affected by Erika after it has left us.

All is calm and quiet up in Pond Hill. Wind has dropped and the rain has
stopped.

The old rain gauge gave a total of 1.97 inches at the end.

Safe to say TS Erika has passed us by.

Good evening everyone,

It has been raining continuously now for six hours. We are back to grey-out conditions in Pond Hill with a strong breeze with higher gusts. There have been heavier downpours of rain during the stronger gusts of wind.

The old rain gauge is giving me a reading of 1.85 inches for the last 24 hours.

5.30 pm and it is still raining (from 1 pm). Lost internet for about 15 minutes but the Nevlec grid has stayed up since the 2 hour outage.

The old rain gauge is now reading 1.44 inches of rain in 24 hours.

Good afternoon everyone,

It has been raining since 1 pm here in Pond Hill, a steady fall rather than heavy downpours. My old rain gauge is giving me a reading of 1.13 inches for the last 24 hours.

The wind has subsided and with the heavy cloud it looks pretty dark outside.

We also lost power from the Nevlec grid at 2 pm for a couple of hours.

Nothing as bad as Dominica though. My heart and prayers go out to all those who have suffered loss.

Looks as if the cloud that was showing up on the France Metro radar
(Guadeloupe) has caught up with us.

A 'grey out' again in Pond Hill, Nevis with some medium rain falling. The rain
gauge has jumped from 0.15 to 0.21 inches in 10 minutes.

The wind is a bit brisker now with some stronger gusts but not to bad.

Good afternoon everyone,

Today in the foothills of Nevis Peak near Pond Hill it has mainly overcast with
brief sunny periods with a gentle East to North East breeze with some gusts.
There have been a few brief showers since 8am that have given us a total of
0.05 inches of rain.

TS Erika is 195 east of the Leeward Islands as it continues to travel in a
westerly direction at 17 mph.

Sustained tropical storms are estimated to be 45 mph with higher gusts and
extend out from the centre for 105 miles.

Good morning everyone,

A bright but overcast start to the day with a little hazy sunshine and a gusty
easterly breeze. No measured rainfall overnight.

It looks as if TS Erika has strengthened a little after its struggle to stay as
a Tropical Storm yesterday.

St. Kitts and Nevis are now under a 'Tropical Storm Warning'.

The storm continues to track in a westerly direction towards the Leeward
Islands at 17 mph. It is approximately 335 miles from the islands.
Estimated sustained Tropical Storm winds are at 45 mph with higher gusts and
extend 105 miles from the centre.

The forecast track of the storm has continued to shift to the south as forward
movement remains in a westerly direction.

The approximate Closest Point of Approach (CPA) is located near 17.5N, 62.5W or
about 25.4 miles from Nevis. The estimated time of when the center of the storm
will be at that location is in about 1 day, and 43 minutes from now (Thursday,

Good evening everyone,

A quiet evening here in Nevis with a slight easterly breeze, dry and overcast.

TS Erika continues its gallop towards us.

Located 545 miles to the east of the Leeward Islands and travelling at 20 mph
in a westerly direction.

Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph with higher gusts.
Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 80 miles from the center.
The NHC continues to forecast slow strengthening during the next 48 hours that
hasn't happened so far today.

The approximate Closest Point of Approach (CPA) is located near 17.7N, 62.4W or
about 38.9 miles north of Nevis. The estimated time of when the center of the
storm will be at that location is in about 1 day, 13 hours and 42 minutes from
now (Thursday, August 27 at 9:18AM AST).

As the storm continues in a westerly rather than a west-north-west direction
the track estimate has moved further south.

Good afternoon everyone,

We have had a couple of light showers this morning up in the Nevis Peak foothills near Pond Hill. The weather is now brightening up with a little bit of hazy sunshine with a gentle breeze from the East. The rain we had off and on overnight from 7 pm yesterday is a dream from the past. The ground has dried and looks like it did pre-Danny. One thing I have noticed is that the plants seem to have raised their heads and are starting to look fresher.

My old weather station has been overhauled. The wind vane had seized up – on inspection it was due to dust/dirt build up on the pivot. A drop of WD-40 and and a clean with an earbud did the trick. i will put that down to high winds and Saharan dust. One of the local birds likes to use the weather station as a perch so the rain collector required a clean out of bird droppings. After fitting new batteries and a general clean up all seems to be working well again.

TS Erika continues to bowl along at a majestic 20 mph but is forecast to slow a little. Some discussion is taking place concerning its track, whether it brushes past the Northern Leewad Islands or tracks further south. i think it goes to show even with all the ‘gadgets and toys’ forecasting Tropical Storms is still a bit of a ‘Black Art’ and nature can keep you guessing.

TS Erika is 640 miles out to the east of the Leeward Islands and moving to the west at 20 mph.
Maximum forecast sustained winds near 45 mph with higher gusts.
Tropical Storm winds extend out up to 80 miles from the centre.

The track of the storm is a little uncertain and has drifted a little southward. The approximate Closest Point of Approach (CPA) is located near 18.0N, 62.4W or about 59.1 miles from Nevis. The estimated time of when the centre of the storm will be at that location is in about 1 day, 19 hours and 39 minutes from now (Thursday, August 27 at 10:36AM AST).

A storm isn’t just a point but you have to look how close it will pass and how far the tropical storm force winds reach out from the centre.

Regards,

Frank Goodwill

Good morning everyone,

From a damp and overcast Nevis this morning. We had a good amount of rain overnight.

5 am - We are again under a Tropical Storm watch as Invest 98L has transformed into Tropical Storm Erika overnight. On the forecast track, the centre of Erika will approach the Leeward Islands Wednesday night and early Thursday.

An early forecast at the moment. The approximate Closest Point of Approach (CPA) is located near 18.0N, 62.3W or about 63.8 miles north of Nevis The estimated time of when the center of the storm will be at that location is in about 2 days, 5 hours and 50 minutes from now (Thursday, August 27 at 10:54AM AST).

Maximum sustained winds are near 45 mph with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast during the next couple of days.

Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 80 miles from the centre.

Now to look at Invest 98L and probably ‘Erika’.

Good morning everyone,

TS Danny has now been downgraded to a Tropical Depression with forecast sustainable winds of 35 mph. It is a fair way south of us so minimum impact regarding strong winds.

Well it’s good news and bad news.

Good news – no storm winds in Nevis. It feels like a strong trade wind breeze blowing this morning.
Bad news – no rain! Had a 10 second shower just after 11 pm last night. Looking around this morning everything is still dry.

The sky is grey with cloud but in parts it brightens up as the sun tries to break through.

Now looking at the next system on the Atlantic conveyor belt - Invest 98L. Half way across the Atlantic and has a 90% chance of forming into a cyclone in the next 48 hours

Frank Goodwill

Had a look at the National Hurricane Centre 11 pm advisory #23 and noticed:

“Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 105 miles (165 km) to the northeast of the center.” That has changed fro 60 miles reported at 8 pm.

I had a look at the Guadeloupe/Martinique radars and there is a large mass of cloud at the NE side of the system that may impact the islands north of Guadeloupe – Antigua, Montserrat and St. Kitts-Nevis.

Also noted that the edge of the system has reached Guadeloupe and Dominica.

Good evening everyone,

Up in the foothills of Nevis Peak near Pond Hill all seems to be fairly calm. We had a couple of drizzly showers with not much rain to speak of at about 4 pm.

TS Danny continues to weaken and it is estimated that sustained winds have decreased to 40 mph and is therefore on the verge of decreasing its status to a Tropical Depression on Monday.

The track of the storm has continued to move further south. The approximate Closest Point of Approach (CPA) is located near 16.1N, 62.8W or about 72.3 miles south of Nevis. The estimated time of when the centre of the storm will be at that location is in about 18 hours and 9 minutes from now (Monday, August 24 at 2:00PM AST).

The forecast puts storm force winds extending outwards up to 60 miles, hopefully we will not have any strong winds looking at the CPA. As this storm continues to track further south the question is will we get any rain from it?

Evening photos attached (hopefully)

Good morning everyone,

5 am - Tropical Storm Danny continues to weaken as it heads towards the
Northern Leeward Islands. Sustained winds are now estimated to be 50 mph with
higher gusts. Tropical Storm winds extend outwards up to 60 miles from the
centre.

As the storm is tracking more to the west at the moment the approximate Closest
Point of Approach (CPA) is located near 17.0N, 62.6W or about 10.5 miles to the
north of Nevis. The estimated time of when the center of the storm will be at
that location is in about 1 day, 7 hours and 30 minutes from now (Monday,
August 24 at 2:48PM AST).

The Meteorological Service of Antigua has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for
Antigua, Barbuda, Montserrat, St. Kitts, Nevis, and
Anguilla.

Though TS Danny continues to weaken it is still expected to remain a Tropical
Storm as it passes over the Leeward Islands e.g. sustained wind greater than 39
mph.

The sun is out again this Sunday morning and shining on Nevis, but it looks as
if hazy conditions are also back again in a small way. Photo attached.

Good evening everyone,

Now we are back to Tropical Storm Danny. NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft
reported that Danny has weakened below hurricane strength, and the maximum
sustained winds are estimated to be 65 mph with higher gusts.
Additional weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours.

Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 60 miles from the centre.

The approximate Closest Point of Approach (CPA) is forecast to be near 17.7N,
62.4W or about 37.8 miles  north of Nevis. The estimated time of when the
centre of the storm will be at that location is in about 1 day, 18 hours and 41
minutes from now (Monday, August 24 at 2:42PM AST).

The system continues to weaken and is forecast to track further north of Nevis.

Frank Goodwill

Good afternoon everyone,

Hurricane Danny continues to weaken as it approaches the Leeward Islands.
Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 85 mph with higher gusts.
Tropical Storm watches have been issued for the following islands:

Antigua, Barbuda, Montserrat, St. Kitts, Nevis, and Anguilla
Saba and St. Eustatius
St. Maarten
Guadeloupe, St. Barthelemy, and St. Martin

The storm is forecast to continue to weaken to a Tropical Storm before reaching
the islands. It is estimated that between 2 and 4 inches of rainfall will be
produced during Monday.

U. S. Air Force Reserve and NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft are currently
enroute to investigate Danny.

Good morning everyone,

Looks like a glorious start to Saturday with this view while eating my
breakfast. Photo attached.

Danny Boy is still a category 2 hurricane as it heads slowly towards the
Northern Leeward Islands. The forecast track seems to indicate that it will
pass Nevis a little further north and due to its slow speed a little later on
Monday.

The approximate Closest Point of Approach (CPA) is located near 17.4N, 62.5W or
about 22.1 miles north of Nevis. The estimated time of when the center of the
storm will be at that location is in about 2 days, 9 hours and 12 minutes from
now (Monday, August 24 at 5:00PM AST).

The NHC have indicated that Tropical Storm Watches will likely be required for
portions of the Leeward Islands and the Virgin Islands later today.

As the storm approaches the islands curtailing and cancellation of flights by
airline operators are taking place. Some of the local and regional airlines
have issued advisories on their web sites:

LIAT - http://liat.com (bottom of page)
Winair - http://www.fly-winair.sx (bottom of page)
Seaborne Airlines - http://www.seaborneairlines.com

If you are travelling to/from and around the Northern Leeward Islands on Sunday
and Monday I would advise you to contact your airline for the latest
information on travel.

Good night everyone,

It looks as if Hurricane Danny has weakened a little with the maximum sustained
winds decreasing to near 110 mph with higher gusts. Additional weakening is
forecast during the next 48 hours. Danny is still expected to become a tropical
storm (sustained wind speed between 39 and 75 mph) on Sunday as it approaches
the Northern Leeward Islands.

Looking at the forecast track of the storm:
The approximate Closest Point of Approach (CPA) is located near 17.3N, 62.6W or
about 10.5 miles north of Nevis. The estimated time of when the center of the
storm will be at that location is in about 2 days, 17 hours and 41 minutes from
now (Monday, August 24 at 4:48PM AST)

So the latest forecast has it passing a little further north now.

To be continued.......

It looks, by all predictions Nevis will be a direct hit with storm winds 39-73 mph.

Stay tuned.

Good afternoon everyone,

2pm NHC update:...NOAA HURRICANE HUNTER AIRCRAFT REPORTS THAT DANNY IS A MAJOR HURRICANE...

Well it looks as if the small but perfectly formed Hurricane Danny has been upgraded to a Category 3 after this afternoons NOAA reconnaissance aircraft flight. It therefore classed as a major hurricane with sustained winds of 115 mph..

It will  still have to battle with some hostile conditions such as unfavourable upper level winds and dry air before reaching the Northern Leeward Islands in a couple of days. So all being well we will be back down to a wind speed level of a Tropical Storm. We shall see.

To be continued.......................

Good morning everyone,

We had a few more showers last night and with the sun rising this morning the heavy clouds seem to have gone but the haze is still with us. In many ways that is a good thing as it indicates that the Saharan Air Layer (dry and dusty air) is around and will help take the sting out of Hurricane Danny and reduce the system to a Tropical Storm by the time it gets to us. The system seems to be slow moving and such a little fella too, but looking at the Stormcarib ‘fly past’ tool using the forecast data at the moment it will pass right over us in Nevis:

“The approximate Closest Point of Approach (CPA) is located near 17.1N, 62.6W or about 0.1 miles (0.2 km) from your location. The estimated time of when the centre of the storm will be at that location is in about 3 days, 4 hours and 31 minutes from now (Monday, August 24 at 2:42PM AST).”

There is still some time for a change in the forecast.

As the hurricane season builds to a climax in the Atlantic the NHC graphics are starting to look like a game of ‘noughts and crosses’ (‘tic, tac, toe’).

I have added a couple of photos showing the contrast between clear (17th August 2015) and dry and dusty (21st August 2015) days.

To be continued.......

Frank Goodwill

Good evening everyone,

To quote the National Hurricane Center - " Danny's compact size makes it
subject to significant fluctuations in strength, both up and down, and such
fluctuations are difficult, at best, to forecast." So the forecast was a
hurricane by the time it reached the northern Leeward Islands and now it is
back to a tropical storm. No doubt this will change again before the arrival of
"Danny Boy" that is projected for Monday.

As for today it was cloudy with hazy sunshine in Nevis with a brisk easterly
breeze. No doubt these conditions are due to a passing weak tropical wave and
the reemergence of the Saharan Air Layer (dry and dusty air). We did have a
shower last night but nothing further today. A couple of pictures attached
giving a view of the weather conditions today.

To be continued.......

Good morning everyone,

Looking at the NHC graphics the forecast track of TS Danny (or is that a
hurricane or tropical wave Danny?) would appear to pass very close to Nevis.

All no doubt will be revealed this coming Monday.

I think with this storm it is not so much the wind speed but the amount of rain
dumped on by it. The drought conditions have left the ground dry and hard so
less able to absorb water. This will no doubt raise the risk of flash flooding
and land slips.

The Premier of Nevis has warned us of bad weather with the approach of the
storm. On St. Kitts the area of water restrictions due to the drought has been
widened to include Basseterre and its environs a couple of days ago.

http://sknis.info/water-rationingupdate/

Luckily Nevis has no water rationing but the populace have continued to be
asked to conserve water. With the recent showers those of us who only have
access to cistern water have had some good top ups.

Qualifying matches for the FIFA under 17 Football World Cup are being played on
Nevis over the coming week. Poster picture attached.

The teams playing: St. Kitts-Nevis, The Commonwealth of Dominica, Trinidad &
Tobago, British Virgin Islands,

Good night everyone,

Tropical Depression 4 now been upgraded to Tropical Storm Danny. The area around the storm will continue to sustain its development. Our usual saviour the Saharan Air Layer (dry air) is to the north and west but low vertical wind sheer that TS Danny will be moving through will allow the storm to increase in organisation. The resulting circulation will negate any dry air intrusions.

Present forecasts give an indication that the track of the storm may pass over or just pass to the north of the Leeward Islands on Monday/Tuesday next week.  So this needs to be monitored by all interested parties to see how it develops and ensure basic preparations are in place.

Added a picture of the present NHC forecast track of TS Danny.

Well St Swithun did hold good after raining on that day we did not get a further 40 days just the odd splatter here and there. Last evening and night was another matter very good rain and the reassuring sound of water going in the much depleted cistern, hope fully what we might receive in the next week will further enhance the stocks of my cistern and that of others in need.

Good afternoon everyone,

It looks as if a Tropical Wave with an associated low pressure system located several hundred miles southwest of the Cape Verde Islands and is causing some interest.

The National Hurricane Centre gives this system a 60% chance of forming into a cyclone in 5 days. They forecast it to form a Tropical Depression by mid-week.

So one to watch in the Leeward and Windward Islands as the forecast track seems to be heading in our general direction.

Early days and more information no doubt as the week progresses.

Good night everyone,

The showers missed us yesterday. It was interesting siting outside and watching the clouds give the fish a shower!

The weak tropical wave finally caught up with us today and at about 4 p.m. some dark clouds came rolling in from the East and we had a light shower followed by some drizzle with some short periods of heavier precipitation following.

The old rain gauge gave a reading of about 0.8 inches of rain for the event.

Well the wild/domestic animals didn’t seem to be too put off by the wet stuff as can be seen from the attached pictures.

1.       My ‘friendly’ neighbourhood donkeys keeping an eye on me.

2.       Vervet Monkeys keeping a low profile in the bush.

3.       My dog -  having just been fed looking for some ‘afters’ namely lizards in the rocks.

Another little problem we are having in St. Kitts and Nevis is large amounts of Sargassum Seaweed washing up on beaches and also hampering fishermen.

A fact sheet on Sargassum Seaweed can be found at the following link.

http://www.gcfi.org/Publications/GCFISargassumFactSheet.pdf

On the positive side there are new scheduled non-stop flights between St. Kitts and Newark, USA.

Good evening everyone,

Another hot day in paradise. There were some clouds but Nevis Peak seemed to be happy to keep them around its summit. The temperature at about 1pm was showing 86F (30C) but with a very little easterly trade wind it felt a lot hotter.

So the weather forecast mentioned ‘isolated showers’ for today, but they were so isolated they didn’t appear here. There looks like a “low” weather system near Barbados coming towards the Lesser Antilles so let us see if that brings some rain along with it. The Saharan Air Layer with its dust has been

giving us a break lately so that might help with the wet stuff.

A few pictures showing how things were this afternoon. A fair bit of “Caribbean Blue”.

Good afternoon,

It looks as if we have had a weak tropical wave pass over us. Yesterday was
bright and clear. Today we have had sunshine and a few showers. Not a great
deal of rain as my basic rain gauge gives me a total over the last 24 hours of
0.14 inches. As the saying goes "every little helps".

Driving around the windward side of the island today I could see Redonda and
Montserrat clearly, so that means we are still having a break from the Saharan
Air Layer (dust).

Good afternoon,

Well there have been Cloudy days with a few showers during the week. Today the
haze of the Saharan Air Layer has lifted and the sea/sky horizon is now
visible.

We are now back to sunshine, puffy white clouds and a nice breeze.

Now into August so let's see how things progress with the tropical waves from
Africa?

My miniature coconut tree has benefited from using the washing machine waste
water run out near to it. My mango tree has been a little confused as it
flowered about two months ago and bore some fruit but much of it was small. Now
it is having a second go and is flowering again. I presume this is due to the
dry spell and the recent showers.

Photos added to illustrate.

Have a great emancipation weekend.

Good afternoon everyone,

After the rude awakening early Thursday morning (1:30 am) to thunder, lightning
and heavy rain and showers for the rest of the day, things have quietened down.
Today, Friday, we are back to cloudy/hazy weather with not much of a breeze.

Another tropical wave is on its way with a 'low' presently designated as Invest
93L. Looking at the National Hurricane Centre forecast it has a minimum chance
of developing into a Tropical Storm/Hurricane over the next few days. Though
there may not be a storm, some more rain is needed and that the ever present
Saharan Air Layer doesn't do a great job of choking the moisture off from the
wave.

Well here in Cades Bay on the West of Nevis we had the minutest shower I think its possible this morning, due to it being so dry here I must stick with St Swithin and hope.

Greetings,

With drought conditions in a lot of the Caribbean Islands I thought I'd go back and do some historical rain fall checking.
I have data from 1977 to present, this is what I discovered.

Average Yearly     Rain Fall = 55.50"
Average Mid Year Rain Fall = 22.18"
Average Monthly  Rain Fall =
3.69"   Jan
3.13"    Feb
2.75"   Mar
3.97"   Apr
5.23"   May
3.42"   Jun

YEAR 2015 = 10.63"  Jan-Jun
So it's safe to say Nevis has received less than half of what we would normally receive by Jun 30.

Good morning everyone,

We had a few days of strong gusty winds after the Tropical Wave passed by earlier during the week. A large branch was brought down from a Cedar Tree in my yard as a result.

Today is back to ‘normal weather’ – mostly cloud free, sunshine and no haze so I can see the horizon clearly.

So some pictures attached: The tree branch that was brought down and today’s view of the Caribbean Sea and Saddle Hill.

There is another Tropical Wave on its way but there is also a lot of dry air in the region due to the Saharan Air Layer. So we will have to wait and see if we get any rain and how much.

It would also seem that the dry conditions in the Caribbean have hit the international headlines with some islands seemingly worse off than others:

Onwards to the weekend

Starting the week off with low cloud and showers. It looks quite dark out and
there are some strong gusts of wind associated with the showers. We have also
had a couple of rumbles of thunder added to the mix.

Looking at the Guadeloupe and Martinique radars it seems that this weather will

Can't complain as we need some of the wet stuff to top up cisterns and bring
the vegetation back to life.

Have a great day,

Awoke this morning to hear that beautiful sound of water running into the cistern. Here on the West of the Island at Cades Bay it is raining Cats and Dogs what a beautiful sight, we are down to a third capacity on the cistern so this has come in time.
St Kitts and Round Hill keep disappearing in the murk and in the distance we can hear the rumble of thunder.

How often do we say keep raining I am today and keep the wind down please.

Keep safe

Keith

- Tropical Wave Showers
  • From: "Weather Update" <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Sun, 21 Jun 2015 17:06:06 -0400
Good afternoon everyone,

It looks as if a tropical wave has arrived today (Sunday) and it has been showery with the showers becoming more frequent this afternoon. A lot different from yesterday’s weather which was quite sunny.

In the Nevis foothills we are having our usual “grey outs” with low cloud accompanying the showers. We seem to be getting about a 10th of an inch rain for each shower.

Thought I’d add a couple of pictures. Views of Saddle Hill Saturday (sunny) and Today (showers).

With the ground bone dry it will need a few more showers to soak into the ground and not just run off the top.

Have a great day.

- Early Morning Showers
  • From: Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>

Good morning everyone,

I was woken by the pitter-pattering of rain drops on the roof at 2:30 am this
morning. There were a couple of good length showers in the early hours so
things are a little damp outside first thing. The air feels a lot fresher too.

I don't think this is a major change but as it is said 'every little helps'.

A picture looking over the Caribbean Sea this morning is attached.

All the best,

Frank Goodwill

- A Rain Shower!

Good afternoon everyone,

Well that makes a nice change for me in the foothills of Nevis Peak - a rain
shower. Not a long one and it didn't even dampen the ground but it was rain.

Not a hurricane or tropical storm but in the present dry spell worth a note.

A couple of pics - Saddle Hill and Nevis Peak today.

Also it is World Ocean's Day.

Oceans are critical to the health of our planet and the prosperity of people.

- We Wait!

Good morning everyone,

Flying into Nevis from Antigua yesterday afternoon gave a good view of how dry
it the vegetation is on Nevis. This morning is pretty warm with the temp.
reading 80F (27C) at 8am with a nice ENE breeze blowing. To the east side of
the island (Atlantic) dark grey clouds and to the west (Caribbean) hazy blue
sunshine.

The weatherman says a possibility of a shower so we shall see.

Couple of photos attached to show the contrast.

Have a great day!

- May NOAA Data
  • From: "Harry W. Hallstrom" <hwh888 at gmail.com>

Greetings Everyone,

Attached NOAA formatted data for May 2015.

Have to say "dry" is a understatement. Total annual rain fall at this time should be somewhere around 20" - 24".
Having read other island reports it seems we are all in need of rain. With some islands resorting to rationing.
Nevis is doing it by shutting off water supply to different areas during the day.

May has been unusually hot with many days above 90 deg F. Rather unusual for this time of year.

Regards,

Harry

- Showers to the north, showers to the south.

Good afternoon everyone,

Seems like Nevis is missing out on something. Still dry, hot, with a gentle NE
breeze. The grass in the yard is burnt brown. I have dug a post holed 2 feet
down and it is dry as s bone. It is still a little hazy looking out to sea with
some cloud cover. Obviously the rain gods have missed this small 36 square mile
island on their travels!

Picture of Saddle Hill today.

On a sadder note St. Kitts-Nevis recorded its 15th murder, that took place in
Nevis yesterday, for the 5 months of 2015. (St. Kitts 10 and Nevis 5).

Regards,

Frank Goodwill

- Hazy, breezy, cloudy and very dry.
  • From: Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>

Good morning everyone,

What a difference 800 feet makes! Hot and still in Charlestown but up in the
foothills of Nevis Peak it is hot with a strong and blustery Northerly breeze
blowing at about 10 MPH, cooling things down.

On Saturday and Sunday there were threats of rain as some dark grey clouds
passed over but this only resulted in a few spots of rain. So it is still dry
here in Nevis and waiting for some wet stuff to fall from the sky.

The Saharan Air Layer is also still with us.

The usual view of Saddle Hill taken today with a lack of blue sky or grey rain
clouds.

Regards,

Frank Goodwill

- Drought conditions

Greetings,

With clear blue skies, hot sunny days and not even a hint of a passing shower, things are surely in a brown dried up state. Can't ever remember going this long without even a short sprinkle. My Mango tree is dropping its fruit and when picking them up I see they are split from lack of water.

- Saharan Air Layer (SAL)
  • From: Frank Goodwill <nevis.storm at hotmail.com>

Good afternoon everyone,

The Saharan Air Layer is still with us but the haze associated with it is not
so thick. It is still hot with a nominal midday temperature of 90F (32C) but
this has been tempered a little by a cooling NE breeze that is much welcomed.
It is still dry and the grass is browning off but the trees are looking green.
The mango trees are starting to bloom so some fresh mangos are something to
look forward too. We had a light rain shower yesterday (Saturday) up in the
foothills of Nevis Peak. Not much to speak of but it managed to wash out some
of the Saharan Dust and leave a coat of dust on everything.

Some photos added:

1. Hazy horizon looking west.
2. Saddle Hill looking a lot clearer from my last photo
3. Dust residue on top of the dog waterer after Saturday's shower.

Regards,

Frank Goodwill

Greetings,

Attached the NOAA data for April.

We are in the H-E-A-T. No rain for 10+ days, cisterns running low, animals seeking shade.
Wonder what it all means? Hot seas & a storm in the future?

Regards,

Harry
