- Still no rain

I talked to to Anguilla yesterday, they have had two minutes of rain in the last few weeks, the island is brown and the trees are all dropping their leaves. Hopefully we will get some rain and not a hurricane, the cisterns are all filling up with Sahara Sand. Here in the Lake District it has been cold and very wet, I wish I could send you all some of the rain.
It has not been a good spring for me and the small brown dog, she has not been well and has issues, also my once beautiful baby sister died last week so it has been a sad time.  I wish you all a safe hurricane season , good gentle rain and the wind at your back.
A very good night,
JH

Good Afternoon Everyone,
I had meant to say in my last post that the rainfall on the Searocks up to 14th April was .51 of an inch (better than the whole of March), I still had to buy 2000 gallons of water before I left though, and the temp was 84F in Anguilla, in Paris and London it was 75F, but in the Lake District it was 50F. bit of a shock! GB Express, Air France, TGV Eurostar and Virgin Rail all behaved impeccably, for which I am grateful. I got to St. Pancras (London) at 1200 and made the Virgin train from Euston Station (20 minute walk away) at 12.30, I thought that was not bad going for and old white woman and an old small brown dog! I attach a pic of the pink wild Hawthorn which is out now and hope you all have a great summer.
I send my best,
JH

Good Morning to all you lucky people who are not taking boats and planes and trains today,
Small Brown Dog and I are on our way back to The Lake District, I hope you all have a trouble free hurricane season and will be watching Stormcarib. I leave you with a few more pics of one of our last dives to Dog Island – and we were spoilt – on the way back we stopped on Dog’s pristine beach for fresh croissants and mimosas, how much better can it get.
Stay safe all and be prepared just in case.
I wish you all the best,

Good Evening Everyone,
It is a beautiful evening in a very dry Anguilla, we have had .36 of an inch of rain during the whole of March here on the Searocks, and the water trucks have been very busy, some Artesian wells have run dry and I think I heard on the radio this AM that the government pipes have not been running for a week. So please say “White Rabbits” first thing tomorrow morning, apparently the rain gods listen to rabbits (this is not an April Fool, just good old fashioned superstition). I attach a pic of a Queen Trigger fish, commonly known as an ‘Old Wife’ from our last dive, their skins are so tough that they have to be peeled off and in the old days the skins were used instead of Brillo Pads to clean saucepans and such, and for those of you that need a smile I attach ‘Lizard in a hat’.
Wishing you all a great night,
JH

Good Morning to all,
Beautiful blue sky, beautiful blue ocean, a few white fluffy clouds,  very hot 80F in the house which means about 84 or so outside, but NO rain, which we are starting to need desperately, the island is going brown and there were 2 water trucks to my neighbours yesterday, I may well have to buy some in a week or so.
Now as promised, some pics of the amazing WWII planes, I believe the ones with folding wings were on aircraft carriers, they are all older than me!
Have a good Sunday,

- More Underwater Magic
  • From: "Joanie Howard" <joanie.howard1 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Thu, 19 Mar 2015 00:52:59 -0000
Another lovely day here in Anguilla, current temp is 77F, still hardly any rain on the Searocks, my cistern is going down fast and I am hoping we might have some rain in the next couple of days. There is a ground sea running, big beautiful rollers breaking on the reefs, not particularly good for the diving, but we have been having some, so see attached pics.
There is an incredible thing going on here at the moment, A Texan antique aircraft club are doing an air show in St. Barts, but none of the WWII aircraft can land there, so all the planes and pilots are based here, and the airport is awash with spitfires and flying fortresses and a lot of others I can’t name, the most amazing sight it Anguilla. I will try to get some pics of them if I can, to show you next time.
Have a great night all,
JH
Searocks
The pics are (and they don’t always come out in order)
A Peacock flounder, Dougie gently handling a little Burrfish, a Snake eel (we seldom see them), a Cowfish trying to camouflage itself, a lovely rare piece of Elkhorn coral, and some healthy Brain and Sheet coral.

  • Date: Mon, 9 Mar 2015 00:09:57 -0000
It has been a lovely day (off and on) in Anguilla, current temp is 77F, a nice stiff breeze blowing, we have had .02 inches of rain (I know pathetic) today on The Searocks, other parts of the island have had more. I know because of large puddles on the road when I drove down to Sandy Ground to dive this AM.
Now I know that many of you know what a Wahoo steak on your dinner plate looks like, but do you know what a 40 or 50lb Wahoo looks like swimming 10ft above you? The most fantastic sight (see pics). Now from the sublime to the slightly ridiculous, a miniscule pipe fish (maybe half an inch long, if that) swimming in Dougies palm and beside his computer, amazing! Then just look who was swimming 60ft below us as we did our safety stop on our way up.
I wish you all a great night.

Good Evening Everyone,
A beautiful day here in Anguilla, current Temp 78F, a lot of wind, no rain, plenty of whitecaps on the Atlantic, a good day for hanging the laundry, ( I lost a booking for my Villa the other day because I didn’t have a tumble dryer) I ask you!!
Now I know I will get some stick for this post as I have been overloading you with underwater pics, but I have to tell you what I saw yesterday. There is a small turtle called Caterina who lives on the Oosterdiep wreck and we see regularly, she likes having her shell scratched (see 1st pic of me doing just that). Well yesterday I found her snoozing under a ledge on the wreck, see 2nd pic, (Dougie I may say was on the other side of the wreck killing a lion fish and feeding it to a shark)  then something caught my eye and I saw this lobster climbing the side of the wreck with a purpose, see 3rd pic, I watched and to my amazement it crawled up to her and plonked itself beside her, see 4th pic, it then, and the only word I can use to describe this is, stroked her with its feelers, see 5th pic, I have to say she closed her eyes and smiled.
I wish everyone the best of nights.

Today we are having a very blowy day, intermittent sunshine and showers, the ocean covered with whitecaps, and instead of ‘tranquility wrapped in blue’ we seem to be having ‘agitation wrapped in blue’. So I thought I would post a few pics of our last dive in our beautiful underwater world where it never rains or snows, and were it was ‘tranquility wrapped in blue’.

Good Evening People of Paradise,
I can’t tell you how privileged I feel to be here (current temp 80F) among so much beauty and warmth, no rain, so being very careful  with the water, my poor guests have been told to wet down, turn off, soap up and rinse off. Anguilla is rationing city water at the moment, not that I have city water but I have to be very careful with my cistern. On the other side of the coin, the ocean is gorgeous, the whales are here, the island is full of visitors and as far as I can see everyone is having a special time. I attach a few more diving pics,  a dead Lion fish, they are very beautiful but are an invasive species and are killing all our reef fish, if you get a chance to eat them they are delicious.
I wish all a great night

Good Afternoon to all from a sparkling Anguilla,
Temp is around 80F, at night about 74F, we have a bit of a swell coming in from the Atlantic, but the ocean is blue blue and all shades of it. Not much rain lately, about .15 of an inch in the last couple of weeks and things are drying quite quickly. I have been playing with my new Go-Pro diving and attach a few pics, the brown frilly thing is a leopard spotted flat worm, I have only ever seen 2.
I wish everyone a great evening,

Beautiful day here in Anguilla, current temp is 78f in the house, the ocean is flat calm and many shades of turquoise and blue, my sort of eye candy, and there is a light breeze. Yesterday’s dive was magic we saw a sleeping nurse shark, a pair of spotted eagle rays flying by, turtles, eels and a myriad of different fish swimming on a pristine reef with soft corals and sea fans swaying in the current. I attach a pic of a flamingo tongue shell with its original resident inside, taken with my new Go-Pro camera that my exceedingly kind children gave me for Christmas. Small Brown Dog has been highly amused by a news story of a Sherriff in Florida who had a new mat made for the entrance of his office (cost US$500) unfortunately it had a typo that everyone missed for 3 months it’s logo said “In Dog we trust” he has sheepishly removed it and I understand people are queuing up to buy it, worth a fortune apparently!
I wish everyone a good evening,

Good Evening Everybody Everywhere,
Beautiful day here in Anguilla, but the sea has come up tonight and diving this AM we were swished around a bit, with the ground sea starting to get going, still saw lots of rays, puffa fish, burr fish, eels, both green and spotted, crayfish and a helmet shell in pristine condition with its original owner inside, among other things. We have not had much rain lately so the mosi’s have diminished, which is good.
I am told by my night sky watchers in the UK that the comet Lovejoy is meant to be visible to the naked eye near to Orion (which is bright and beautiful rising from the East at the moment) for the next 2 weeks. This comet has not been seen for 11,000 years and will not be seen again for 8,000 years, it is called the green comet on account of it’s aura and was discovered about 10 years ago by an Australian amateur astronomer. I have not seen it tonight but will watch for it, and would appreciate to know if anyone else sees it.
I wish all a great night.

Good Evening Everyone,
A good day here, bit of rain, plenty of sun, strong breeze and the island filling up with people from all over the world, and quite a few super yachts  lurking about, with darkened windows so one can’t see the important persons within. I just had to post a couple of lovely pics taken diving this AM with Dougie by a charming young man from New york called Logan Gershon (his copyright). It is the little turtle I have talked about before who was showing off for us on the wreck of the Oosterdiep, I am in the background the only way I look good these days, full wetsuit mask and regulator covering my face!
Have a great night and a great Christmas, I am off to South Carolina tomorrow with the small brown dog to see my children and grandchildren so you will have a break from my posts for the next week.

It has been what I call a champagne day here, blue blue sea, golden sun, the island is green and lush. We had a lovely dive this AM saw the non Christian huge  fish again (Potato Grouper, I have been scolded for calling it a Jewfish, sorry), we were also circled by a spectacular Spotted Eagle Ray, with no tail!  (NB Culebra!) Dougie  (Special ‘D’ Diving) tells me that locally here the fishermen used to catch them cut off their tails to use a whips, yes whips, then let them go. The mind boggles, who did they whip one asks oneself???
I will take this opportunity to wish everyone, the folks that read occasionally and the people that post, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy, peaceful and prosperous New Year. I attach a pic of God’s floral paint box of ‘The Pride of Barbados’ an extraordinary flower that grows all over the Caribbean and is beautiful.
A good night to all,

Just thought I would report from a rather soggy Anguilla, we were supposed to dive this AM (saw an amazing 100lb Jewfish last Sunday), not sure if it is still politically correct to call it that but that’s what it says in my fish book!, anyway I digress, Dougie called me last night and said we wouldn’t go this morning as it was going to rain, how right he was, we have had 4.84 inches of rain so far in December. it is clearing up now so hoping for a dive tomorrow. Also we have had a huge amount of Sargassum Seaweed lately, apparently the fishermen are bringing in huge catches of Mahi-Mahi which lurk under the Sargassum as cover.   I went to Gwen’s opening a week ago last Sunday, and she is trying to get things moving, but the Island is very quiet right now, I will have to take a chair for The Little Brown Dog as she doesn’t like the sandflies buzzing around her nose and lying in the sand! I attach a few  self-explanatory pics and wish you all a very good afternoon.

The most beautiful evening here in Anguilla, cool breeze, sunset over Shoal Bay to the West, a three-quarter moon rising in the East over Island Harbour , Venus shining in the North East, firefly's dancing in the bush, I think the lesser Antillean Crested Hummingbird has hatched 2 babies from what looked like a couple of pearls in her nest, the Gawlin (black night heron) is croaking on his perch somewhere out in the dark, we really are the people of paradise as TNT keeps saying. I do hope the fat lady is happily singing and that we have got through another hurricane season. Thank you to all the Stormcarib family for their reports, I for one, will keep on reporting the weather and other trivialities from Anguilla, as I know Gert gets his income from the amount of hits on the site and if a few people enjoy what I write and my pictures hopefully it helps him keep the website solvent.
Have a very good evening.

Good Evening Everyone,
We have a good strong breeze, not quite a wind but almost, the temp is 78F sitting at my computer, we have had 1.67 inches of rain in the last week on the Searocks and the island is emerald green, not very Anguillian! The main reason for this post though is to put an amazing pic on, it is the mama Lesser Antillean Hummingbird sitting tight on her nest in a wild Mimosa tree, it is pretty much life size she is 3.5 inches from her bill tip to her tail feathers and she is exquisite, such a privilege to see her.
We have had a two of great dives in the last couple of days, the vis hasn’t been brilliant but we have seen a lot of marine life, thankfully Dougie’s boat (Special D Diving) has recovered from it’s issues which has been a hindrance for the last couple of weeks, so come down and dive.
I send my best and hope you all have an excellent evening.

Anguilla has sparkled today, there has been a brief shower and yesterday we had .21 of an inch of rain, we have been having a lovely North Eastern breeze, which has made it harder for the mosis to control their flight control and BITE, which they have been doing with efficiency  and alacrity, (buy plenty of OFF and bring long sleeve shirts and slacks/skirts if you are coming soon). I attach few pics, one of a handsome stick insect on my porch, one of Pam Webster’s marketing Anguilla style ( and if you have a vote mark it for her) and one of a nest of one of my exceedingly greedy and messy yellow birds (Banana Quits).
Things look relatively quiet on the the Eastern front, but the Fat Lady has not started to sing yet so still stay prepared.
Have  a Good Night Everyone.

As  I still have no internet and am relying on my kind neighbour  I thought I would put my Remembrance Day post on now. About three weeks ago I was in London for a meeting and I paid a visit to the Tower of London to see the poppies, a display to commemorate the start of the First World War, they are all individually made, ceramic, can be seen from space and there are almost 900,000 of them each one representing a life lost in that war. It is an amazing sight and will start to be dismantled soon as each poppy is then going to be sold to raise money for the Royal British Legion. I took a few pictures for me but also for anyone else who would like to see them. Attached also is The Exhortation.
We will remember them.

The thunder and lightening was not as bad here on the Searocks as it was last week, still pretty impressive though, Small Brown Dog took it in stride, and talking of her......Fame...... having lunch the other day at  Le Café de Paris (wonderful by the way) a perfectly charming strange lady approached and said “Is this the Small Brown Dog?”! I must get paw prints to give to fans.
I hope there is not too much damage from flooding but I would think there is bound to be some.
Have a great weekend everyone and hoping the sun will soon shine again.

- SERIOUS RAIN EVENT
  • From: "Steve Donahue" <tainos at anguillanet.com>
  • Date: Sat, 8 Nov 2014 10:12:48 -0400

We need to watch for flooding in certain low lying areas and roads.  We had a few showers yesterday – nothing much – then about 8:00 PM the light show started and it rained …and rained.  For much of the night, we were getting many heavy downpours with rain rates of 2.5 – 4.5 in. per hour (see graph below).  And thunder/lightening like I have never seen from 8:00 – 11:00 PM.  Total rain yesterday was 4.67 in., so far today, 2.53 in. – total of 7.2 in.  I think most of the heavy downpours are over, but the ground is so saturated, there no place for the water to go.  Following is the latest for our area as of 8:00 Am:

A trough of low pressure that is located over the northern Lesser Antilles is expected to continue to bring heavy showers and thunderstorms to much of the Virgin Islands and the Lesser Antilles from today through tonight and even into a majority of Sunday. Those of you in the Virgin Islands and the Lesser Antilles should be alert for localized flooding, especially in mountainous areas. In addition to the heavy rainfall/flood threat, local seas are forecast to be rough this weekend across the Virgin Islands and Lesser Antilles and mariners in this area should exercise extreme caution.

This stormy weather is forecast to finally pull northward and away from the Virgin Islands and the Lesser Antilles by Monday.

Well the heavens opened across Anguilla today and as of now we are still getting rain. I will have to wait until morning to see the flooding but I'm pretty sure I will see some. My cistern got to be running over or soon will be. Still hearing thunder and lighting and plenty of it.  ‎This too my knowledge is the most rain we've had for the year.

Stay dry everyone.

Small Brown Dog and I returned to Anguilla last Sunday by our usual route, long trip and we were tired. I have electric and I have a phone but no internet, apparently Lime are still  repairing more than 500 faults from Gonzalo, so I haven’t been able to report and am now sitting in a neighbours house where they have kindly let me connect to theirs. However last night, right above my house on the Searocks we had the mother of all thunderstorms, the ground trembled, the house trembled the lightening turned the night white and the lightening and thunder happened almost simultaneously so it was right above. Scary, we got 3.75 inches of rain as well and the wind shifted round to the South /west yesterday evening and is still coming from that quarter. The mosis are awful and it is a good thing I am a fatalist otherwise every time I got bitten I would be worrying about the chicken thingey.
Gwen’s has gone, Hanks has been burnt down again, but he is rebuilding already. I will report more fully when I get my own internet back and in the meantime I wish everyone very well.

Other than no power since 2:30 Monday afternoon and Gonzalo’s hit later that evening, things are slowly getting back to order here on Anguilla.

The sliding doors on the north side of the house weren’t even thinking about keeping the rain out! There was a short period on lightning and thunder and then around 7:30 PM the wind completely stopped. About ½ hour later the wind started back from the south which indicates to me the storm came close enough to us to catch part of the eye.

The next morning was mop and bucket time in the house and leaf removal from the pool! J….

There is some structural damage around the island, but mostly the trees and shrubs took the brunt of the storm.

‎Well we sure did get a beating from Gonzalo however we are OK. Most of the damage seems to be down poles and lines, trees, signs and very minor flooding etc. Not much in the way of rain however outside is presently very dark and raining. Electricity is out island wide and Anglec crews are working full speed to restore power. Most business are closed but all essential services are up and running. I will post some pictures later. Out of the 2 cell phone providers (Lime and Digicel), LIME is fully operational and Digicel is down in some areas.

I have just spoken to a good friend who lives near the valley, she said everyone is OK, quite a lot of trees down and power cables down –no electric at the moment- as far as she knows no boats lost, but a lot of  water, she said the eye took an hour and fifteen minutes to go over so Gonzalo must have been taking his time, which of course means more time for more damage. Like some of the other islands I gather  Anguilla was taken a bit by surprise, I hope Bermuda does not get full force as her plants, trees and structures will already have been weakened by Fay.
I hope all are OK and send my best from far away.

Finally got my generator on line.  Gonzalo was a Cat 1 hurricane when it passed over us at 8:00 with the lowest pressure for the storm at 984.8.  The eye was with us for about 20 – 30 minutes when the wind died down and the rain pretty much stopped.  Highest wind recorded here on the West End was 72 mph at 8:55 from the WSW.  My rain gauge went crazy at about 5:00, but based on the water in my pool, about 5 inches.  Rain has now stopped, winds are quickly dying – sustained mid-20’s, gust 36 – 40 mph.   Pressure now back up to 1004.8 mb.  Was able to get out around 5:15, but not much happening.  Barnes Bay was rough but beach seemed ok.  Maundays Bay had some erosion, but nothing like what it has been in the past.  We’ll see how everything looks in the morning.  Right now, trying to clean up all the standing water in the house.  Never knew I had so many leaks.

Cheers,

The good news?  We are still under a hurricane watch (hurricane conditions POSSIBLE in next 24 hours) as opposed to a warning (conditions PROBABLE).  But we are right in the crosshairs, and since the hurricane hunter just measured SUSTAINED winds at the center of 70 mph with higher gusts, that’s what we should expect in about 6 – 8 hours.  Rain is coming down pretty good, but not a deluge, and pressure continues to fall to 1006.8 mb (from 1011.0 this morning).  Pressure at center is 988 mb.  There is no well-defined eye, but thunderstorm activity just to our SE is pretty strong.

More later – though may need to be on generator.

Gonzalo continues to move slightly north (closer to us) and strengthen slightly - is expected to pass very close to our south at (or very near) hurricane strength about 10:00 PM tonight.  Forecast calls for 70 mph winds, gusts to 86 mph.  From satellite runs, looks like most of the heavy rain will stay to our south – but still be some good rains.  SXM just issued a hurricane watch, but still under a tropical storm warning.  Central pressure is 992 mb (we are currently 1009.4 mb, but falling).  We’ve had some gusts up to 33 mph, but still out of the ENE.

I’ve shutter my windows but right now, not planning on putting up my metal shutters on the sliders.  Schools are closed and heard that ferries stopped running this morning.  Should be back to normal sometime tomorrow.

- GONZALO UPDATE
  • From: "Steve Donahue" <tainos at anguillanet.com>
  • Date: Mon, 13 Oct 2014 08:55:00 -0400

As of the 8:00 AM forecast, it appears Gonzalo’s track has moved slightly north, and will now pass about 25 mi. to our south this evening with winds of about 60 knots (70 mph) at the center – close to hurricane (which this will probably become after passing us).  It is forecast that winds extend out about 30 miles to the north, so we should expect 40 – 50 mph winds with some higher gusts. It’s a small storm so should be out of here by tomorrow.  Waves are not forecast to be unusually large, perhaps 12-14 ft. off shore, less in shore – but will be rough on the south side.  Rain is always a guess, but would expect some but not the floods some are talking about.  Power was off this morning, but back now.  I would expect ANGLEC to disconnect perhaps late this afternoon.  As of now, the MIA flight this AM to SXM is not cancelled, so should be some good news.

Here in AXA, winds are from the NE 14-18 mph.  Seas have some whitecaps, but not bad.  Pressure is 1010.8 and steady.

Right now, new TS Gonzalo is forecast to pass about 80 miles to our south late tomorrow (Monday) with winds at the center perhaps 63 mph, gust to 75 mph.  We – as well as most of the islands – are under a tropical storm warning.  But TS force winds extend out only about 20 - 30 mi. to the north, so expect maybe some 30 – 35 mph winds here with perhaps some higher gusts.  Probably be a pretty good rain event.  Also, I would expect some beach erosion on south facing beaches – especially during some strong SE winds.  North beaches should be fine.  Advisories will now be issued every 3 hours, so keep checking.  It is currently at 16.4 N ( we are 18.2 N) and is expected to keep moving due west until Tuesday.  If this holds true, it will pass well to our south.  But need to keep monitoring it’s position to see if it moves further north.  As always, keep checking the advisories for any change.

It looks as though the northern islands could be getting some rain and I do hope so as I am told Anguilla is still pretty dry and I don’t relish the idea of an empty cistern on my return.
On the subject of mosi’s, interestingly enough a few of my friends have been asking me where to buy mosquito nets(bedbathandbeyond.com in the states) as they are planning to bring their own when they come down to the Caribbean this winter, sort of “have net will travel” attitude, I think it’s not a bad idea, I have always had them on all my beds and I know some people think I’m quaint and it is just an old West Indian custom, especially when the house is screened anyway, but I find they really do help, and you can now get them treated with anti-mosi stuff so the little beggars can’t bit you through the net if you happen to roll into it in your sleep. Just a thought.
I wish you all a good night, and also welcome to Shashi from Rendevous Bay.

Good evening All,
We have still had not enough rain to keep the cisterns and pools topped up, but thankfully have also not had the full force of any tropical storms or depressions affecting us, long may that last.
The bad news is that for the 4th year my house on the Searocks has been broken into by opportunist ‘tiefs’. I do not have much to steal, so they do not take much but considering the business I bring to Anguilla, it is a great shame. I am personally responsible for the building of at least 5 Villas on Anguilla and more than 30 people a year come and stay at Hightop and I have been operating since 1989.
I am well aware of the privilege of having a home there and living in it for 6 months of the year but I also think that the Government of Anguilla ( and also a lot of the other islands) should appreciate the business brought in by snowbirds (or swallows as I am known as here). It is a sadness that I am sorry to report.
To keep everyone updated I hear via the grapevine that Gwen’s Reggae Grill has closed at it’s past location and is moving down to the west end of Shoal Bay East, I do hope the ambiance and music will be as good.
I will be back in Anguilla soon and in the meantime the small brown dog and I wish everybody well and lets hope storm free for the next six weeks or so.
A very good night to all,
JH

Anguilla just had a little down pour of rain that lasted about 20mins - 30 mins. It was light and steady but in my view the best sign of rain we've had in a months.  We are far from not wanting more rain but this is sure welcomed by everyone.

I notice the tropics are very quiet and even the ‎'big wave' that was coming off the African coast is no more. Let's see how long this last.

Good Evening all you lucky People of Paradise (to pinch Ian’s phrase from TNT)
I always get nervous when Dave says a storm system is going to be shoved out to sea, Bertha was pretty awful here on this side of the Atlantic, much worse than Anguilla, last weekend we had winds over 70MPH on the hills, and more than 60MPH here at The Little Bay Barn, so don’t think things just dissipate somewhere mid Atlantic. I hope my cistern has filled up a bit with what looks like passed over Anguilla, I would also like to give a big welcome to Alvin “The Weatherman” to StormCarib, the more people we have reporting the better.
It is forecast to be about 38F here tonight, don’t mention socks, one needs sheepskin boots.

Today around 1pm we heard the sound of thunder and a quick heavy down pour with some gusty winds that lasted a few minutes.  The rest of the afternoon skies were partly cloudy becoming very cloudy and dark.  The capital (The Valley) just experienced another heavy down pour that didn’t last long however the clap of thunder can still be heard.  I can only assume these are the first signs of Invest 96L.

The forecast of 96L seem to be tracking more closer to us that previously thought however the good news is that we don’t expect it to develop into anything stronger than a depression or at most a small tropical storm by time it reaches the CPA to #Anguilla.  We are all hoping for some rain and if the outside picture hold true, then we are in for some.  Only time will tell what we’ll get but I’ll be waiting on tonight’s update to see what changes might take place.

- Periods of rain this morning

‎Anguilla saw some wet conditions this morning and last night. Still need more rain as it just clean the dust off the trees :). Outside is windy and nice and the skies are clearing up.
The disturbance in the Atlantic is now 0% chance of developing however I'm still hoping for some rain weekend and the forecast still calling for it. Time will tell what happens. Until next time remember #itonlytakesone

‎Good evening everyone, my name is Elvin Richardson from Anguilla known to many locally as the "weatherman" and it is a pleasure to be part of the stormcarib family. I have use this website for years as a tool to update many people and businesses on the island of Anguilla about upcoming weather and I look forward to sharing whatever I can through this website to better help us all when the time comes.

I'm just returning to the island from a short getaway and notice a lot of wet spots I'm guessing from the little wave that's passing through however hardly not enough rain and we are desperate for it.
As we enter the peak of the season I do notice there is an invest off the Africa coast. It is far too early to say much about it so time will dictate what happens however we should keep an eye on it.

Until next time, remember #itonlytakesone

- Bertha's sparse rain

Good Evening Everybody,
I am told by my guests in my house on the The Searocks that they got about 3 or 4 hours rain and had to drop the South and East shutters to keep dry, I don’t know how much we got in the cisterns (Steve will tell you better) but  I would hope for 3 to 4 inches.
On a different note, tonight is the 100 year anniversary of The First World War, we have all been asked to turn off all our lights at 10PM until 11PM leaving on a single light or candle for a shared moment of reflection of when war was declared, roughly 950 million people died, and that did not count the civilians, and the reason I mention this on Stormcarib (and please correct me if I am wrong anybody) is that 15,000 of them were West Indians, along with masses of Canadians, Indians, Anzacs and on and on.
Lest we forget.
I wish a very goodnight to all and a warm welcome to Richard from Carolina, PR.

Sort of a “ho-hum” night in Anguilla with the passing of Bertha.  Had some rain squalls come through after midnight, but winds in the low 20’s were not bad except for a few gusts in the hi 30’s.  Strongest gust was 40 mph around 7:30 this morning.  Rain that we really need was disappointing – only 0.4 in.  And it looks like it’s quickly moving out of here to the NW.  Good news with no damaging winds, bad news for our cisterns.  Cheers,

Ooops – forgot to attach wind graph since midnight – see below.

At 6:00 AM it’s still cloudy and breezy, but very little rain so far. Steve, at the Anguilla Weather Site, has recorded .19” since this morning. I think most of that took place shortly after midnight when we had a short, but heavy downpour. Nothing much since then but some non-electricity affecting wind gusts.

Looking at the current radar, it appears we may have a chance of a little more rain from the “tail-spin” as Bertha continues to the NW. We need much more rain here, so I am keeping my fingers crossed!

Our friends in Puerto Rico are really in desperate need of rain… Here’s hoping that Bertha safely helps you out!

Now then, Bertha Mark 11 and beyond, as there are more jems in the necklace following on across the Atlantic, please be ready everyone, tilly lamps, extra water and batteries etc., etc.  I hope we just get a good rain and fill out systems, but you never know.
A good night to all,

P.S. I wrote this last night but British Telecom has been having one of it’s little turns and I couldn’t send it. I have just heard from the nice people staying in my house in Anguilla and they said we have had some much needed rain, let’s hope for some more.

Good Evening Everyone,
I hope Bertha does not materialize, fingers crossed, I was alone in my house in Anguilla for the last Bertha , with no hurricane shutters the wind howling at 125 MPH outside, the gales, dirt and rain pouring through the windows, no electric, no phone, and a transistor radio with the only station receivable from St. Martin in French of course. Needless to say I was not prepared, and learnt my lesson, so please be ready for this hurricane season, who knows what will come.
I would also like to wish all the athletes good luck at the Commonwealth Games which are opening tonight in Glasgow, especial luck of course to the Caribbean and mega luck to Anguilla.
I wish you all a good night,

Good Evening to Everybody,
First of all a peaceful and quiet hurricane season to us all.
I read the an article in The Times about a week ago regarding tagged sharks/tarpon/marlin/tuna helping scientists forecasting hurricanes and I have attached it, I am not very clever with the computer but I hope you can all read it, I found it very interesting. Yet another reason for protecting our oceans.
As far as I know all is well in Anguilla and the north of England is alternately cold and wet and chilly and sunny.
I wish you all a very pleasant evening,

Good Evening Everyone,
I know I am many miles away from Anguilla but I had a wonderful BBM from Ruth who looks after my house while I am away, it said, and I quote “the rain gauge is full (and it shows up to 8 inches), the pool is full, the cistern is full and we have had great rain, Thank God.”
I wish all a good night,

P.S. For those culinary experts among you the St. George’s Day wild mushrooms have been amazing this year, dipped in beaten egg rolled in fresh parsley, chives with a hint of garlic mixed with breadcrumbs and sautéed in butter. Delicious! (a word of warning don’t eat any wild mushrooms without properly identifying them first).

St. Martin (10 miles across the channel from us) reports over 2 inches rain yesterday/last night.  Us in the West End, Anguilla??? How ‘bout a whopping 0.09 inches!  Not enough to even make puddles.  And today?  Heavy clouds all around, but only 0.03 in. rain.  WE NEED RAIN!!!!

- Ground sea pics

Two weeks ago I reported a big ground sea on the north side of Anguilla, here are a few pics of it at Captains Bay and the reefs around Island Harbour. Also I have had so many nice emails wishing the small brown dog a safe passage back from Anguilla to the north of England, and I have to give credit where it is due, GB Express Ferry, Air France, TVG rail in France, Eurostar and Virgin Rail all worked on time and efficiently, but  the small brown dog was tired and slept for nearly 12 hours last night.
My very best to everyone, until the next time.

- Rain

Good Afternoon Everyone,
We have had .59 of an inch of rain in the last 3 days, and very welcome it is too, lets hope it keeps coming.  About 10 days ago we all saw a huge plume of black smoke rising to the sky towards the south of the island, it turned out the dump at Corito had caught fire and several thousands of old tyres were burning and may continue to do so for the next couple of months. A fellow diver from Grand-Case St Martin sent me a pic of what it looked like from over there which I have attached.
Had a lovely dive yesterday on Deep South reef and the Oosterdiep wreck, when we crossed to the wreck we found a little reef shark (about 4ft) circling inside it trying to select his lunch, well when 10 of us appeared around the wreck he got quite cross and if he had been a dog I would have said his ruff went up, the back arched, the fins went down, then he decided there were too many of us and disappeared with a swish of his tail.
Next Wednesday the small brown dog and I renew our acquaintance with the Air France Airbus  and the Eurostar to return to the old country for the summer. I thank all of you who have read my posts and hope I haven’t bored you too much.
I wish all a Hurricane free season.
All the best,
JH
