- Rainy Goodness
  • From: William Kunke <wkunke787 at gmail.com>

Good Morning,

After a few different dances around the island, it rained yesterday. As the gauge shows Culebra received just short of 1 inch (0.90) of rain.

Inline image 1

It was a good soaker and this along with our previous 1 day rain brought us right up to our monthly average. Even though we received our average in 2 days of rainfall, not spread through the month of March. This rain will really help the LO's zuchini plants:

We wish all our Storm Carib friends Happy Easter:

- Good Rain For Culebra
  • From: William Kunke <wkunke787 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Tue, 19 Mar 2013 07:41:38 -0400

Good Morning,

After recently posting that "funny dancing" might be necessary to get out of our recent drought, yesterday the rain came.

Inline image 1

Late in the afternoon we got some showers and this rainbow came out briefly and then it really rained later on. We received 1 inch total and it filled our water tanks. Good rain that really soaked-in!

Enjoy,  William

- Culebra, cloudy but dry
  • From: William Kunke <wkunke787 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 15 Mar 2013 07:27:21 -0400

Good Morning,

As seen from today's sunrise photo, Culebra has plenty of clouds in the area, but none bringing any rain.

Inline image 1

March has been essentially rain free and many are hauling water to refill cisterns.  Fire warnings are in full effect as the grasses have dried out completely.  So, please be careful with those cigarette butts and any other thing likely to spark a fire.  It is time to do some "funny dancing" to the moisture gods.

Enjoy,  William

- Culebra Weather
  • From: William Kunke <wkunke787 at gmail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 1 Mar 2013 06:18:29 -0400

Good Morning,  Culebra's hillsides continue to dryout and turn brown.  With clear skies, low humidity, and brisk winds, we have no answer for this except a surprise front of some kind moving through with some rains.  We hope!  Our combined rainfall totals for the first two months of the year is only 1.1 inches.  Our NWS posted this warning yesterday:

FIRE WEATHER...HIGH FIRE DANGER CONTINUES TODAY DUE TO DRY FUELS
AND LOW HUMIDITIES. WINDS WILL DIMINISH SLIGHTLY FRIDAY AND
SATURDAY LESSENING THE FIRE RISK SOMEWHAT BUT STILL PRETTY DRY.
A SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT IS EXPECTED EARLY NEXT WEEK.

We had a wonderful snorkel at the beginning of this week, saw lots of Hawksbill turtles and Rays.  I have attached a few photos,  Enjoy,  William

Good Morning,  Culebra continues to enjoy really great weather;  cool mornings, special sunrises, perhaps a quick shower to keep things on the green side, sunny days, clear and cool nights.  Yesterday dawned like this:

Good Afternoon,  Here is the rainfall data for January in Culebra compared to other year's averages.

Inline image 1

Culebra has been enjoying some beautiful weather in the new year, with just enough showers to keep things on the green side.  I had a chance to fly into San Juan yesterday with clear skies. Here is the cruise ship piers and El Morro on the way to landing there.

Good Morning, Culebra's weather has been very pleasant these past few weeks of the New Year.  Occasional showers, lots of sun, clear skies to enjoy the stars.

Here is a site that follows shipping worldwide:

This is a screen shot of it taken this morning of our area and some of the info provided.  The maps at the site are interactive and lot of info is available on the ships origin, destination, ownership, etc.

Good Morning & Happy December,

Below I have attached the yearly rain data for Culebra, PR.  You will notice that once again we are below average for the month of November and far below our projected yearly average.  All this seems strange, as the island has remained green.  The explanation is that we have received "steady" monthly rains, no extreme highs or lows.

I also attach a sunrise photo taken last week.  We always enjoy the photos from you correspondents and info passed along, Thanks,  William

Good Morning,

Culebra has had heavy clouds and brief showers almost every morning for a week now.  Nothing bothersome about the small rains, in fact it is keeping our island fresh and green.

As we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving in the traditional US manner (turkey & all the fixins'), we wish to thank all the island correspondents for the info they provide to us, so that we can prepare and understand what the weather is doing in the Caribbean.  Also, thanks for this site as a means to do that.

Wishing you all the best for the remainder of 2012,  William

Good Morning

Culebra had a brief shower this AM, and a beautiful rainbow in the hills to enjoy after.

Culebra's rainfall data for October is only 2.6 inches when our average for that month is 6 inches.  Our total rainfall for 2012 is only 23.3 inches.  Our yearly average is 46 inches, so we have lots to catch up on in the next two months.

Attached rainfall data, and rainbow photo,  Enjoy,  William

NASA has published a night-time photo of "Sandy" on the night of October 25th as it began moving north over Cuba.  Not only if the size of the storm impressive, but please note the clearness over Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.  It really shows the lights on in San Juan and St Thomas.

Good Morning,

Culebra seems to be in a dry slot with lots of rain in the other islands.  Last night we had a lightning storm all around us, but no rain.  I finally caught a lightning strike on camera, so here it is.  The only way I got it was to take a video and then crop-out the frame with the lightning stroke on it.  Took me a time to figure out how to do that.  See attached photo.

Good Morning,  With "Rafeal" about 80 miles to our East, Culebra has had a quiet time of it during the night and this morning.  I will attach photos of the sunrise, showing interesting clouds to our East, but nothing threatning.  Also, a photo of the cactus blooms that St John mentioned.  What causes these cactus at different locations to bloom at the same time?

We will remain watchful for any activity from the tail of "Rafeal", but so far it is a "non-event".

Enjoy,  William

A day spent in waiting. It started to get pre-stormy and then, that all went away. As I type it's barely cooled off, we haven't had a drop of rain. Looking at the loops it is like Rafael hit a wall and headed literally straight north. We are one degree away from it and getting nada. Will that change in the night? Maybe, but for now, it's all calm from Culebra!

Long time no post, but I've been away in the states the last few months. Drought conditions here and serious heat, but in the past couple of days, we're getting bits of badly needed rain. With 98 heading our way, or near by our way, we could be getting a lot more, but as ever, who knows for sure?

In the meantime, I know while I was gone there was a LOT of activity weather wise and stormcarib wise and donations are needed. I know, most of us could use a donation or two ourselves, but when we depend so much on this website in time of need, now we're the ones being depended on. Even a couple of bucks is better than no bucks at all!! Let's not be the rain on stormcarib's parade!

Good Morning,

Culebra received 0.60 inches of rain last night, with lots of lightning around.  Culebra is short on it's normal annual rainfall amounts, so this will help get closer to normal.  Also, a tropical wave is expected this weekend and this is what the NWS San Juan has to say about it:

MEANWHILE...FARTHER EAST...A TROPICAL WAVE LOCATED MIDWAY BETWEEN
THE WINDWARD ISLANDS AND AFRICA WILL CONTINUE TO MOVE WESTWARD
DURING THE NEXT FEW DAYS AND WILL ENTER THE EASTERN CARIBBEAN SEA
SATURDAY. THIS WAVE IS ACCOMPANY BY DEEP TROPICAL MOISTURE WITH
LATEST SJU-GFS LAYER PRECIPITABLE WATER ANALYSIS INDICATING VALUES
OVER 2.5 INCHES. ALL COMPUTER MODELS AGREED THIS SYSTEM WILL
BECOME ACTIVE AS IT APPROACH THE LESSER ANTILLES DURING THE
WEEKEND.

After the rainfall last night we were treated to this beautiful sunrise, see attachment.

  • From: William Kunke <wkunke787 at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Mon, 1 Oct 2012 04:53:42 -0700 (PDT)
Good Morning,

The rainfall in September for Culebra was only 1.80 inches.  Far below our average of 6.60 for that month.  With only 20.70 inches total for the year, we have  only 1/2 of our yearly average with 3 months to go.  We have some catching-up to do.  Still Culebra did fairly well compared to our neighboring islands and has managed to keep the hills green.

I attach the rainfall data chart and some recent photos,  Enjoy,  William

Good Morning,  Culebra  received 0.50 inches of rain last night.  A good soaking rain that filled up the water tanks also.

This morning we had a spectacular sunrise with Siris & Cumulus clouds, lots of red reflected color from the sun and on the left hand side of the photo you will see a blue pillar of light.  I think this is caused by some kind of reflection on ice crystals, but am not sure.  Any experts out there have an explanation?

Good Morning,

Culebra is still hot and mostly dry.  We did receive our first shower in two weeks on Tuesday afternoon and it was very refreshing.  Temps however continue to make 90 degrees and higher.

Yesterday afternoon we had some high Cumulus clouds forming on the horizon, but no rain for us.  This morning was a colorful sunrise, with a clear view over to St Thomas.

Jackie (Dominica), I wanted to tell you that we enjoy the photos of the Lakes region in England when you make your trip over the pond.  Very different and beautiful, thanks.

Good Morning,

Over at "Astronomy Photo Of The Day"    http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html

This compilation of hurricane tracks since 1851, and some interesting info underneath the photo.  Interesting to see how concentrated these tracks are in our area.

Culebra's weather is like everyone else on the islands, almost dead calm, high humidity, with heat.  This always happens if the storms pass to our North as "Leslie" has.  Now it is moving so slowly away that we have many days of this condition.  Waiting for our "trades" to pick up once again.

Good Morning,

I can report the same as what St John has said, very little rain and no heavy winds during the night.  A few "squally" type bands of showers passing through quickly.  With the eye of "Isaac" almost directly south of us now, Culebra has been spared any dramatic weather as yet.  I do expect as "Isaac" moves to the west through the day, we may get some heavy rains from the back-end tail.

  • Date: Thu, 5 Jul 2012 04:57:26 -0700 (PDT)
Good Morning,

Since yesterday afternoon Culebra has received 1.25 inches of rain.  A good soaker, just what we needed.  We also had some good lightning and thunder, especially this morning.  Skies appear to be clearing-up some now, but we still have a drizzle of rain coming down.  The lightning will bring out the green and perhaps we will get out of this Sahara Dust regime finally.

Before the rain started yesterday, I got out for an early morning swim for my Independence Day celebration with the fish.  Enjoy,  William

Yesterday afternoon was pretty much like every other afternoon lately, waiting for the humidity to drop and hoping a shower would not immediately be replaced with sweat. It's been dry around here. My sea almonds leaves are browning and dropping. Iguanas are eating things they never eat in my yard unless it's this dry. Energy sapping is an Olympic sport. And we're covered in Sahara dust. If you are outside for any length of time you can wipe a paper towel up your arm and it comes away with a slightly reddish, dirty tint. But yesterday afternoon, late in the day, also brought pink air. Which is a pretty good color for air. Who am I to question why?

  • By William Kunke <wkunke787 at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Fri, 1 Jun 2012 04:15:43 -0700 (PDT)

Good Morning,

Culebra's rainfall total for May is 2.80 inches.  This is much less than the average of 4.30.  This makes our 2012 total 12.60 inches thus far.  See attached chart.

Culebra seems to have missed any rainfall from the tropical wave passing to our south.  It seems to have been sheared off and any moisture is not here.  A bit of rain at this time would be nice, as we have dried out with no rain and stiff breezes.  Still our flowering trees have bloomed and brightened up the yard.  See attached orchid tree photo.

Last night, the rain finally came in, with, at one point, a tremendous clap of thunder that sounded like it was inside, enough to make me levitate for a moment. I'm pretty sure, anyway. Hopefully a lot of cisterns got filled and the land is bursting with green and blossoms. Today is sparkling, the radar showing tiny specks of rain but most of the big bits are to the northeast of us.

The hot word is starting to be heard more and more around here. Sweaty cheeks mean more air kissing and thoughts turn to getting prepped (that should be 'finishing preps') for the season ahead. I was lucky enough to be given two big water containers so yesterday I got down to the dreaded chore of stowing away stuff for when I leave in June, that I hope is right where I stow it when I get back here in October. Now we have this potentially early storm question going on. Thanks to Suzanne from the finca, for directing me to this site for one opinion on the matter.

Have a great Wednesday!
