It's an incredibly windy day in Bonaire with Force 5 winds and gusts
beyond. The waves are high so many sailors are heading to Red Slave to
windsurf. There is a kids race on Bonaire Copa Julia. Great photo ops to
be had today!!

Be well and follow your island bliss

- Wind and Rain
  • By "Ann Phelan" <ann at bonairecaribbean.com>
  • Date: Tue, 8 May 2012 20:14:50 -0400

Wind Guru is predicting some serious rain tomorrow and major winds for the weekend in Bonaire. I may get a special Mother’s Day 3.5 windsurf session if I am lucky. Fingers crossed. The winds have been pretty much non existent all of April and May. I am thrilled as I have VIP windsurf clients heading to the island Saturday.

The glob of precip in the Eastern Caribbean looks ominous.

Bonaire’s rainy season is over. We have not had rain in about 3 weeks. The wind is gone so it’s diver’s delight. Cruise ship season ends soon, thankfully. As most know who read my posts I welcome the small boutique lines but the mega ships really do not belong in Bonaire. That’s another story. As I reflect on the year’s bookings and the past high season,  my numbers are slightly below previous years but a steady flow of regulars has kept me up and running. I am on Cape Cod for a few weeks enjoying spring but head back in May and hope the trades return. Typically, May can present amazing windsurf conditions.

- spectacular day

Today is the most glorious Bonaire day…for the first time in a few weeks the sun is out in its glory shining brightly. I was inspired to take the day off and head to Lac Bay. It’s a perfect day for light wind freestyle but I read a book and chilled with friends…the winds are light and will continue to be light for the days to come. Have a great weekend everyone…be safe..have fun

- rainy night cloudy day
  • By "Ann Phelan" <ann at bonairecaribbean.com>
  • Date: Wed, 21 Mar 2012 07:48:33 -0400

The grey overcast weather prevails week 5  I’d say. The winds have dropped considerably so the sail size range at Jibe City are larger rigs.

Last night I woke to rain falling. We needed it to wash off the dust and give the plants a drink. I think we are heading out of our rainy season.

I was out and about yesterday in the overcast sky and got a heavy duty driver’s sunburn on my left side. Reminds me to wear my sunscreen every day. The mossies are really bad this month in fact nothing seems to keep them out of my house…I spray, I use the coils and they prevail.

The weather in the US is completely confusing..80’s in Boston? My daughter had to go shopping this week to buy summer clothes as she was not prepared for the temps. Incredible.

- Weather Woes

TGIF

The weather has been really strange in Bonaire…cloudy, drizzle here and there and 3 weeks of crazy good wind. I was invited out on my friend’s boat yesterday. The swell crossing to Klein Bonaire was easy 4 feet and the winds howling. We got to the beach and I was first to jump in..brr..I would say the water temps are hovering around 76. That seems warm to most but here in Bonaire, it’s chilly. I went to shore and the sand was whipping so I guesstimate the winds were topping 22 to 26 with gusts. PERFECT windsurf day.  We headed to Oil Slick so we could snorkel. Karen and I jumped off the cliffs for good measure ..my rite of passage I guess..here the water was VERY cold. We headed up to Andrea I to snorkel our third stop and the rains came. We quickly headed south seeking sun ending the day cruising along Kralendijk’s waterfront.  There were about 10 boats in from various points in Canada. The day was really great despite the weather…

Today it’s about 75 out with clouds and rain. According to Windguru, the winds should lighten up.

Bon Dia

The winds are raging in Bonaire. It’s a perfect 4.7 kind of day. The sky is very dark and grey as well. I find the island pretty quiet. I spoke to a hotelier who told me his season has been abysmally low….I heard the same about Antigua. I attribute this to the mild winter in the east coast. It’s just a thought.

Airfares to Curacao (then puddle jump to Bonaire) are so cheap. I secured a few round trips for clients for 619 for Xmas and 495 for summer!! It’s doable for sure.

I am so excited to list a new upscale villa. Check it out

Felis Karnival

The weather last week was grey and still, not much wind. I have a group of windsurfers on island, 30+, who descend each year for a few weeks of sailing. A few left very disappointed. Alas, the island has a plethora of other non wind options but knowing my friends, they will sit on the beach for hours waiting for a squall. The Karnival parade was today…it’s a big celebration in Kralendijk.

New Years eve was a rainy night off and on but the festivities continued including fireworks island style. I recall years past having MUCH more and much longer. I cannot help but wonder if the economy impacted sales of fireworks? New Years Day was dry and windy. Today the winds dropped a bit and the trades seem to be quieting down for awhile according to Wind Guru.

The weather is all over the place: cloudy, windy and squalls and then sunny and windy with light puffy clouds…Tonight folks are lighting off fireworks already…our friends  put on a show last night. One particular unit was 300.00 and was FABULOUS.  I am going to dinner with my daughter and friends and then may head home to chill with the furkids instead of heading to a party. The rains have passed and Bonaire is experiencing typical Dec. weather. It’s glorious with light breezes and warm temps in the low to mid 80’s. The island locals are selling fireworks on every street corner. I have come to despise the entire experience as it causes such angst for one of my dogs. The booming and cracking sound makes her berserk. My other dog, Luci could care less.

- Christmas Trades and Rainy Season Prevails
  • By "Ann Phelan" <ann at bonairecaribbean.com>
  • Date: Wed, 21 Dec 2011 16:18:26 -0500

I have had two amazing days of windsurfing. The Xmas trades arrived over the weekend and it’s positively howling. I was totally overpowered on my 4.2 meter  Gun Sail and 85 liter Angulo wave board. The tides are very high and the water is a bit chilly perhaps 77 degrees in Lac Bay? As for the rain, wow, it’s off and on now for weeks and weeks but when the sun comes out, it feels so good. So good, I forgot my sunscreen and basked in the short lived sun enough to burn my nose. Ouch…

Off to walk the dogs and get all muck lucky…

Tomorrow over 6,000 cruise shippers or pod people as they are called here descend on our little island. Ugh…

There's not a lot to report. Sinterklaas and Swarte Piet came to
Bonaire...the holidays are in full swing. The main event is rain, and LOTS
OF IT. I am back in the US for a week and hope that it clears soon as the
island needs some sun mostly for the tourists who spend a lot of money for
that blessed warmth.

Honestly, in the 10 years I have been traveling or living in Bonaire, I have never seen so much rain. The puddles are massive, the mosquitos are fierce and I have had it…I need a little warmth and sun….

Another mega liner is in port. At least the shops will do well.

Despite the weather, life is incredibly great.. rampages of appreciation for my life in Bonaire and stateside..

It’s pouring out in Bonaire. I woke to a delightful rain around 6 AM. The landscape is very dark and it’s still raining lightly. On the www.stormcarib.com radar, one can see the “blob” over the island.

It’s a good day to organize my travel business, meet with partners and clean the house.

Tomorrow is the US holiday Thanksgiving. I live part of the year on Cape Cod, the capital of Cranberries.  Cranberries are a staple in our Thanksgiving menu. Here is my recipe.

Fresh Cape Cod Cranberries 4 cups

Lemon zest

Lemon juice (a few squeezes)

Sugar  ½ cup

Cook down on low covered…towards the end throw in ¼ cup Grande Marnier

- ground swell and poor visibility
  • By "Ann Phelan" <ann at bonairecaribbean.com>
  • Date: Tue, 22 Nov 2011 13:11:12 -0500

It’s a picture perfect day on Bonaire. The temps are in the upper 80s. I took an hour lunch break and headed to Windsock by the airport to snorkel. My little beach is gone and the waves were crashing in so I headed south past Invisibles. Again, quite a bit of swell. I gave up snorkeling as the visibility was horrendous. Will try tomorrow.

There is one small cruise ship in which is management compared to last week when over 6000 passengers were in port. Mind you, our island is 15,000 in total. ABSURD

The island has had a few weeks of intermittent rains. The salina by Bonaco Gas is full. My yard is a mess with weeds. Today there is a light breeze and puffy clouds. I am still on Cape Cod for my fall sojourn but saw photos of Maria’s wrath in Bonaire’s waterfront in Playa. WOW..huge waves and very rough seas. My pet sitter reports a lot of rain as well. The webcams I used to rely on are down for good so there are only a few to view the weather scene in Bonaire.

Here on Cape Cod it’s been windy, warm and balmy. I came out to my car in Sandwich, MA and it read 87. I drove to the beach in Dennis and the temps dipped down to 74 quickly. It was a perfect day for the kiters out and a few windsurfers.

  • Date: Sun, 28 Aug 2011 08:11:38 -0400

I flew from Bonaire to Curacao late Friday. Curacao had a lovely thunder and lightning event to help me sleep. AA left on time flying our 737 into Miami. Arrival was uncharacteristically smooth. I was in and out of the arrival/security process and in the Admirals Club. When I went down to the gate to check in, all ramps were closed due to a lightning storm. I chatted with the pilot as he explained our route to BOS to avoid Miss Irene. Our flight left 30 min late and was quite smooth even entering a grey Boston landscape. Last night, it was muggy and calm. Today the winds here on Cape Cod /mid Cape are ramping up. The air is heavy. The models show Irene tracking west of the Cape so will will have little rain and moderate to heavy winds. I would love to windsurf but all of the beaches are closed.

Thanks Angela in the Bahamas for the update. How awesome mobile phones allow us to stay in touch and communicate.

Early Morning Excitement..a baby flamingo was next to my house in a puddle. Luci and Confy, my dogs, were chasing it around with me in tow..I secured the dogs in the gate, chased the baby thru muck and mud, got her into a towel, drove my manual shift car with her on my lap (nipping at me and crying)...found a lovely salina near Pekelmeer with her fellow feather friends....she gracefully walked away into the sunrise....morning bliss in Bonaire..

Wind reversal prevails in Bonaire, humid and rather warm.

I am heading to Cape Cod for my fall sojourn. Fingers crossed my flights are on time and I get over the bridge before it closes.

  • By "Ann Phelan" <ann at bonairecaribbean.com>

In Bonaire everyone extends the greeting “Bon Siman” on Monday..the translation of course is good week, so…Bon Siman Tur Hende Na Storm Carib

I was with friends last night discussing the massive downpour we experienced yesterday. It lasted an hour and filled my water barrel 3 times. I kept baling to water the garden. My friends who live in Nawati and another friend in Sabadeco said they had not a drop of rain..incredible….Our island is only 112 sq miles but weather can impact various areas much differently.

There will be no wind all week. The humidity is high. I am ready to head back to Cape Cod next week. It’s time for raw bar, mudslides, native corn on the cob and fresh tomatoes…

As I look towards the track of Irene I am concerned for folks in Haiti and the DR. Fingers crossed ….

That means I get out early each day, get my errands done, stand up paddle and then hunker on the hammock, patio or in my bedroom from 2-5. Too hot really to do much. With heat indexes in the 120’s, it’s really stifling. Time to head back to ole Cape Cod for a end of summer respite soon.

A 38 foot Dutch built Contest Yacht called Tea Time landed on the reef outside Sorobon Beach Resort on Lac Bay. It was towed away but sank near the lighthouse…sad news for the reef and the boat…

I LOVE Sorobon Beach…amazing property..just spent a weekend there..ya, 4 miles from my house but a Staycation can be lovely..

- light winds and a weekend to be thankful for
  • By "Ann Phelan" <ann at bonairecaribbean.com>
  • Date: Fri, 19 Aug 2011 10:37:09 -0400

Greetings from the B  in the BES Islands..Bonaire had a light rain shower today, enough to create some nice puddles for the birds and the critters. It is a different world in this neck of the woods. Whilst we escape the hurricanes and horrid storms the Eastern Caribbean experiences, we have such long dry spells that I find difficult to endure..I am a New Englander and LOVE weather.

I suspect I will SUP today (Stand Up Paddle ) after work. Am training for a fun event to occur on Cape Cod in Sept.

I was cleaning the patio and was checking under a pot and saw a HUGE FAT FROG. I felt bad disturbing him so carefully put him back ….this is a very unusual sight.

The weekend is here..a few low key music shows, SUP time I am sure and a cheese and wine party with my friends Sunday…

I head back to the US in a few weeks for my fall respite. It’s too bloody hot for me in Sept.

Thanks weather spotters for sharing and updating..I love when MNI, BDA, BGI and other islands chime in..Steve, any AXA news?

Peace and Irie

Pasa bon wikent…

- breezy night...Slaap lekker
  • By "Ann Phelan" <ann at bonairecaribbean.com>
  • Date: Tue, 16 Aug 2011 22:21:25 -0400

It is a brilliant night in Bonaire. In contrast, last night was steamy hot. On top of that, we had an island wide black out for 10 hours. No one seems to know why. I simply cannot sleep without AC or at least a fan. Now, the clouds and stars and moon have created a breathtaking night landscape. The breeze is incredible.

We have not had a decent rainfall in weeks. The island is parched…

Slaap lekker/sleep well…

  • By "Ann Phelan" <ann at bonairecaribbean.com>
  • Date: Wed, 10 Aug 2011 20:00:49 -0400

For two nights our sunsets have been blazing red and glorious..the mossies are out bad tonight..I had to use heavy doses of bug spray to combat them as I am outside working on the laptop. Light winds prevail. I suspect I will go paddle tomorrow on my SUP.

Murray in Margarita, congrats on the nuptials…I hope we get some wind and rain soon..my septic is low and soon, I will need to use government water to care for my plants..that means $$$.

My boyfriend was here for a week so I was a tourist. Please enjoy my blog www.bonairebliss.com for some details on my journey to Washington Park. Breathtaking.

- staycation
  • By "Ann Phelan" <ann at bonairecaribbean.com>
  • Date: Mon, 8 Aug 2011 16:03:01 -0400

I had a lovely staycation courtesy of Sorobon Beach Resort. For my b day, the managers offered me a free night to experience a property I market for my esteemed clients. Upon check in, I noticed a sailing vessel stuck on the rocks on the reef outside Lac Bay. Upon further investigation it appeared to be a 30 foot sail boat. I did not get close enough to see the name but it was truly stuck on the reef. According to staff at the hotel, the owner’s navigation  system failed and he thought he was near Klein Curacao.  It’s certainly not an easy situation and I wish him well.

The winds are perfect for light wind freestyle or beginner sailing. My visiting friend enjoyed learning the sport.  For me, I expect I will be stand up paddling in the days ahead as winds are light.

Check out www.bonairebliss.com in the days ahead for Bonaire updates from my world. Be safe and have a pleasant week in your neck of the woods.

It is the most beautiful day in Bonaire..the breezes are blowing 14+ and the humidity is low. I sailed a bit on a 5.5 meter sail but wasn’t planing so went to the marina at Lac Bay to watch the fishing boats come in.

Have a dushi day..

- hot
  • By "Ann Phelan" <ann at bonairecaribbean.com>
  • Date: Tue, 2 Aug 2011 16:24:04 -0400

It’s extremely uncomfortable in Bonaire. No wind and when there was, it was a wind reversal.  It’s actually quite humid. I was watering the garden and a frog came out of my rain barrel. It’s very rare to see these fellas. I put him in the shade and hope he finds his way back in..or wherever he wishes to hide from this heat.

I hope TS Emily stays FAR away from the DR and mostly Haiti..enough is enough for that devastated country.

Thanks Steve in AXA for posting and everyone else…it’s a different weather world down here in Bonaire..

  • By "Ann Phelan" <ann at bonairecaribbean.com>
  • Date: Tue, 2 Aug 2011 07:28:31 -0400

Miss Emily has taken all our wind. The planes are taking off in the other direction ..an indicator of the no wind presence in Bonaire. I am off to the garden before the heat sets in..it’s going to be a hot one.

Emily seems to be dousing some of the islands with gusty winds and rain. It will be interesting to watch her path as she tracks NW through the islands and later perhaps into FL.

It’s a stand up paddle day…I have a 12 ft SUP from Starboard and am ordering my next one, 10 ft Whopper. What a great name, eh?

- Rainy Hurray
  • By "Ann Phelan" <ann at bonairecaribbean.com>
  • Date: Mon, 1 Aug 2011 10:16:10 -0400

Well, the skies opened up and it’s been raining here for 40 min. We needed a good rainfall. I placed all of my potted plants on the ground to catch the rain running off the roof. I have a rain catchment system on two sides of my roof but it’s not perfect. In Bonaire, few people catch the rainwater. Having lived in Antigua I am accustomed to this and wish I had a better method.

Back to the rain, it’s now stopped but it certainly washed off the dirt and dust off of everything. The wind has completely died, I suspect having been sucked into the system to our east. It will be stand up paddle conditions for a few days. I hope to get out soon.

- All Eyes East
  • By "Ann Phelan" <ann at bonairecaribbean.com>
  • Date: Sat, 30 Jul 2011 10:55:38 -0400

As all eyes are watching to the east as perhaps a new storm will be named, Bonaire is enjoying a glorious summer day. We had a spot of rain last night, enough to create puddles for the birds and iguanas to enjoy. It is so arid here that puddles are such an infrequent site. My garden and car and house all got a nice washing..the dust and dirt is everywhere…

I pray that the next tropical system is weak and does not create damage to the islands to our east. Stay tuned…

Hope that everyone in Dominica is staying strong and the clean up effort is going as well as expected. Mother Nature’s wrath is undeniably unpredictable…

I am looking towards the east on the weather map with envy..Bonaire needs rain. We have another picture perfect day with light puffy clouds, gentle to moderate breezes and average humidity. My garden and the landscape could use rain. Plus, this New Englander likes diversity in weather.

I had a lovely swim at Bachelor Beach again today.. my new fav lunch break spot.

- Bonaire Update
  • By "Ann Phelan" <ann at bonairecaribbean.com>
  • Date: Tue, 26 Jul 2011 08:05:19 -0400

Yesterday was a glorious picture perfect day. The sky was blue, the humidity was low and the cooling breezes made for a perfect day. I worked around the house and online and then headed to Bachelor Beach for a dip. I had not gone there in a few months and all the coral rubble has washed away leaving powder white sand. It was magical.

I saw a Green Flash at the 7 PM sunset and had a great dinner at Unbelievable. (www.bonairebliss.com)

Today I woke to a still humid warning. Since then the winds have picked up and it’s freshening up a bit.

Watching Invest 90 as it creeps towards the Yucatan.

The weather is picture perfect..light puffy clouds and about 15 knots of freshening winds. The KLM and Delta both landed on time. I have heard airfare to Bonaire on KLM is over 1400 Euros so know of folks flying to Curacao (cheaper) and puddle jumping over. Some restaurants are packed..others not so much..the dive sites are definitely less busy.

I just returned to Bonaire after a lovely sojourn in Cape Cod. Since my departure in late May the landscape is brown and dry.  The Salinas are empty so the flamingos are in the sanctuaries versus the rain filled Salinas near Auto City and Goddard Catering. I hope we get a few rainy days. The heat index was around 100 when I landed today.

Honestly this is the best windsurfing conditions in years…and it’s sure to continue. In between the island has had great batches of rain.

I am on Cape Cod and head to Bonaire next week…will look forward to sailing on a 4.7 meter sail and my small board. Looking forward to peace and solitude. This was my first 4th of July away from Bonaire in 10 years. Cape Cod was simply mad with traffic but what fun..I swam at Marconi Beach, 62 degree water..OMGGGG..brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Today the winds clocked over 45 knots during an intense storm. My windsurf friend was overpowered on a 4.0 meter sail.  Anyone interested in windsurfing should plan a last minute trip to Bonaire. We have about two weeks of expected intense strong winds.

To celebrate the wind I have some amazing last minute specials shown on http://www.bonairecaribbean.com/blog_bonaire.html. The Kontiki and Roomer specials would be perfect for the windsurfer or Coco Palm or Happy Holiday Homes. Email me for details.

Keep up the with the local reports. When I saw T&T and St. V getting storms I knew we would too today.

We had torrential downpours the other day and the puddle remain for my dogs to enjoy. The patio is a constant mess thanks to their cutie pawprints BUT we needed the rain. The frogs are swimming in my rain barrels. Life is good.

Cruise ship season is over. I won’t miss the masses that are just too much for our island infrastructure. Love small boutique lines but the mega ships simply do NOT belong here

Light winds prevail.
