Today was supposed to be our biggest yearly Christmas Bazaar fundraiser for the Ark Animal Shelter for abused and abandoned animals at the Lions Castle Polo Complex in St Thomas. Unfortunately with the rain that started there late last night and just kept falling non-stop, by mid morning some of the vendors were calling in their cancellations. The decision was made to cancel the fair. Even now at 4.30 pm the rain has never stopped so it was an excellent call. I have been given to understand that the areas which we were scheduled to use for parking etc are under water. We have rescheduled our date to Saturday Dec 3rd. and are hoping that the vendors and everyone that was to be involved in today's activities will come again and make the day a roaring success on behalf of our canine friends.

It's been raining steadily in Barbados for the past few hours. Normally, it doesn't rain this long. We are accustomed to fairly heavy short showers, but this is some steady rain!
The ceiling is already dripping and the sea is giving off a slightly foul smell, seems like the fish are being stirred up by the rough seas!

97L is quite a distance out to our east and many things can play,i hope the forecast remains for a weak Tropical Storm as the present forecast tracks bring this system right on our doorstep Friday.People in Barbados should stay up to date on this system.

We just keep having more and more rain. Three days straight. The ground is absolutely saturated. During the night lots of thunder and lightening and the wind and the rain lashing through. My back garden hollow is flooded to the highest point I have seen in many years. Haven't heard any news yet but there has to be lots of flooding across Barbados this morning. Supposedly this to continue for another day!

Since the winds and heavy rain finished we are left with a rainy, damp afternoon. All in all not bad for what we were forecasted to receive.

After stronger than normal winds and rain starting in the early morning before sunrise along with thunder and lightning in the distance it seems now that we are out of it. The local paper called it a "Storm In The Tea-Cup". There were some pockets of flooding around the island, but nothing more than business as usual in situations like that. So far, no reports of severe damage.

I guess, we were lucky, AGAIN...

During the night we had lightening but no thunder. The winds and rain started around 4.30 am. Currently there are rumbles of thunder in the distance, the rain has stopped and there are breaks in the grey dull clouds.

- Quiet Maria, so far...

I can confirm the post "Very quiet" below also from the South of Barbados.

It's now 6:20 pm on Friday 9th, Sep. According to the CPA tool Maria is presently closest to us. Not a single breeze, though! My pool is flat like a mirror, no leave is shaking!

However, in the morning between 5:00am and 6:30am we had a hell of a rain including thunder and lightning near by. It lasted between 1/2 hour and an hour. Then it calmed down until midday when a strong rain soaked us again for another hour or more (that was at the West Coast).

Now, we are waiting for the tail rain to come, because as there is no wind when the centre is closest but 120 miles away to the North, I do not expect much more stormy winds to come. Barbados Meteorological Service has not issued any watches or warnings either, other than a flood warning until 6pm tonight and another for small craft and sea bathers.

Everyone should stay alert and tuned to the news... (radio, TV, etc.)

Right now the air is very still here in Cane Garden Park, St Thomas. Thunder is rumbling in the distance. The clouds are relatively high, giving the impression that the sky is clearing up; however, there is no blue in sight. So far we are under a flood warning until 6 PM today.

The present general description is overcast and quiet.

It rained on and off during the night and into this morning. It's a cool, dark overcast day and yes, all schools are open. The Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development announced that today.
Somehow, it also seems very quiet. We are not on storm watch as far as I know but we have been told to expect this weather to continue throughout the night.

HERE IS A SPECIAL WEATHER BULLETIN

Issued by
The Barbados Meteorological Services

at 12:00 NOON: Thursday, 08 September, 2011

The Barbados Meteorological Department continues to monitor the progress of T.S ?Maria?.

At 11:00 a.m today, the poorly organized tropical storm was centered near 13.°N 51.2°W or about 560 miles?900 km to the east of Barbados. ?Maria? is moving towards the west at 22 mph..35kmh with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph?75kmh. On its present track, the center of ?Maria? is due to past about 70 miles?112 km to the north of Barbados tomorrow afternoon.

Although the system has undergone some weakening during the past 12 hours there is still the likelihood that it could regenerate into a much stronger system as it slows down over the north-eastern Caribbean. Air-Force Reconnaissance Aircraft will investigate the system later today if necessary.

Regardless of development, some showers, thunderstorms and occasional gusty winds will spread across Barbados tomorrow. Some flash-flooding is also likely.

In addition, above normal sea swells of about 2.5 ? 3.0 meters will accompany the system. Hence sea bathers and marine interests should take all necessary precautions.

Residents in Barbados should continue to monitor further statements issued by this office.

We have a weather station that reports here on the South Coast and at 6.00pm it is still reading temps are 38 degress - at 4pm it was 41C . No wind nothing just so so hot. Maybe a few showers through the island today but otherwise it sure was a very hot day in the sun.

We have a weather station here on the South Coast and at 6pm it is still registering temps at 38C. At 4pm it was 41C. The sun was scorching today although some places on the island had showers we did not. Not a leaf is stirring out there, so I guess it will be a night for the a/c.

After seeing this mornings satellite of the huge system heading for Barbados I thought it was a wipe out day. Yes it certainly rained heavy in parts of the island but by 11am the sun was out again and this afternoon has been quite pleasant. There was some thundering on the West Coast this afternoon but nothing happened here in the South. Will wait and see what the night will bring.

Are you sure Emily's sister is not over Barbados. We seem to be bombarded from the East and the West. Looking at the satellite NHC before it crashed yet again it seems that two units joined forces. Practically all day we have had rain - and then this past half hour - well - it just pours down relentlessly. I love the airport description at 4pm of a light thunderstorm with rain. Well here on the South Coast we are definately not having a light thunderstorm with rain..... We have had no notification of anything but I know when my garden has floods there is trouble elsewhere and I have not heard anything. Maybe they all went down to the Spring Garden Highway for Kadooment.....

I was really expecting the lights to go out, given the kind of thunder and lightning we experienced in the wee hours of this morning. I lay in bed clutching my fully charged flashlight so I wouldn't have to trek to the bathroom in the middle of the night in complete darkness. I've been living in this house since I was 12 and it was the first time I ever recalled the window panes shaking during thunder rolls. What an experience!
Crop Over festivities continue this weekend. Jumped in a foreday band for the first time. It was a very, very humid night but the breeze coming off the sea offered some relief. Light intermittent showers are expected today. Seems like the perfect weather for kadooment revellers!

Barbados Met office is on top of things. The local Met Office issued this statement Saturday. Although residents are heading to the supermarkets it cannot be certain that it is to stock up on storm supplies as Monday and Tuesday will be public holidays here.

Its most certainly looking like a wet Kadooment Day and the National Cultural Foundation (NCF)says the Crop Over show will go on.
The NCF’s corporate communications specialist Wayne Simmons said the agency had no plans to disappoint the 8 000 revellers and 21 bands expected to chip and dance from Warrens to Spring Garden during tomorrow’s Grand Kadooment.

Its been raining continuously for almost 12hrs now. Weather reports points to a
"weak tropical wave" affecting the island. Water has accumulated on most roads
and its making for a miserable journey for motorists and pedestrian traffic.
Hope the blob isn't as menacing as it looks on satelite images when it reaches

We experienced a heavy, heavy downpour, along with wind, thunder and much lightning along the south coast of Barbados today between 4:30 and 5:00 p.m. Some parts of the road started to flood. We are still under flood watch until 9pm as far as I know. Some expected that it will still be raining on the South Coast at for the whole night but it stopped raining heavily since 6pm. I knew there was going to be a few hours without rain but of course no one ever listens to me! lol

Woke up to  bright orange skies yesterday morning around 5:00 a.m. There were some heavy showers but everything my side cleared up around mid-morning. We have been having steady, persistent showers and wind (near Bridgetown) since lunch time and it's almost 3:00 p.m.

What a wet and stormy afternoon in Barbados and the eastern Caribbean. We were pelted by quite a bit of showers, thunderstorms, and gusty winds as a tropical wave traverses the region.
Lots of buildups including numerous CB cells are marching ahead of the wave axis which is still slated to be east of the islands by the latest NHC discussion.
The showers have abated here in Barbados now and everything is quite calm and quiet at the moment. Looks like we should have a better day tomorrow far as it goes for sunshine!

I'm talking about the fire-like ball
Of lightning I just saw through my window.
The thunder rumbled so hard, the windows vibrated.
Just felt a gentle breeze.
We had two fairly heavy rainfalls. After 10 pm and after 1 am.
This is after a fairly humid day with very light breezes.
The sky has a purpleish colour and the crickets are making a lot of noise.
I can hear the garbage truck (or some other noisy vehicle)
In the background. Otherwise, it is very still.

These past few days the heat is almost unbearable. No wind and lots and lots of mosquitoes left over from all the rain we have had in the dry season which turned out to be our wet season. Barbados was bombarded with rain almost constantly for the firt four months of the year. Now everyone is talking how hot hot it is and this feels like August weather!!!!! Tourists obviously think the weather is great. Locals do not... whatever happened to the trade winds!!!!

  • By Eye Write <eyewatcheyewrite at gmail.com>

There are reports of showers in central and western Barbados, but where I am right now (near Bridgetown) the weather is fair, so some tourists may be enjoying some sunshine after all, even if it is short-lived, as the MET office warns that there could be more unstable weather this weekend.

- Relatively quiet now.

  • Date: Sun, 1 May 2011 18:47:46 -0400

Well after about three bouts of clearing drains last night and this morning, we still had to move the trash can from being washed down the gully, and push water out of the basement. Water overwhelmed the drains and we had the rushing river we have grown to expect through our driveway. It seemed to have rained steadily through the night here in Cane Garden Park, St Thomas. The rain actually held up for most of the day. It is currently cool, but not raining: relatively quiet.

As much as I love the cool air the rains bring, I am praying for the clouds to hold the water through tomorrow night so that many of tomorrow’s May Day events have a chance to take place. I am especially looking forward to the rescheduled Reggae on the Hill tomorrow.

Keeping you posted from the middle of the island

Isn't it ironic how everytime there is flooding early in the morning, so many events are postponed and then the sun comes out? :)

This morning was probably the first time in a while that it has rained continuously for so long (Not sure how many hours, I was asleep for a few of them).

I took my time getting to church this morning, but most didn't make it as less than 50 people turned up.
Saw a car stalled on Hastings Main Road and a dog trying to swim through flood waters. The _expression_ on his face was like: Can't they see I'm trying to take a flood bath? Damn cars! lol

Persistent overnight and early morning showers have cause postponement and cancellation of various events across Barbados. Church services, picnics, cultural events have been shelved for the day. Major retail businesses including  Cave Shepherd has closed their stores  across the island.

The outcome of the Reggae on the Hill show remains in limbo as organizers and Met Officials are still monitoring the weather system affecting the island.

The department of Emergency Management has been updating Barbadians on what is going on across the country. Callers to radio stations reported collapsed  walls, flooded canals, drains, roads, cars and houses mostly in the southern part of the island.

  • Date: Sat, 30 Apr 2011 07:57:00 -0500

Incredible amounts of moisture over the last 72 hours. Is this the DRY season?

Mr. Sun has turn up for work for the first time in days. The promoters and patrons of Reggae On The Hill will be happy to see this and will more likely be praying that there is no more rain to affect the event which comes off on Sunday.

Barbados was placed on a special alert lastnight after days and nights of continuous rain. The north was particularly hit hard again yesterday after torrents cause substantial and in some cases “flash” flooding along hwy 1 and in  Speightstown.

Hope everyone in St Lucia and St Vincent are okay.
