I'm not sure it will fizzle as latest sat images look stronger than they did earlier today. But......: MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 40 MPH...65 KM/H...WITH HIGHER GUSTS. MARIA IS FORECAST TO WEAKEN TO A TROPICAL DEPRESSION DURING THE NEXT DAY OR TWO WHILE MOVING ACROSS THE LEEWARD ISLANDS AND THE EASTERN CARIBBEAN SEA. HOWEVER...IF WEAKENING DOES NOT OCCUR...TROPICAL STORM WARNINGS WILL BE REQUIRED FOR SOME OF THE LEEWARD ISLANDS.

It looks. Like Maria may stay well south of Antigua and may even fall apart.
There seems to be. "double talk" on what she may do. but we will probably be
lucky and get little or nothing... Had planned to put shutters up tomorrow but
will probably cancel that plan.... roll on September so we can Get this
hurricane season behind us.

It looks like Maria will be named at any moment. I read crown weather's blurb as well as several others and it looks like they agree that the storm which may go slightly north of Antigua will pass as a tropical storm and not as a hurricane. This is good news. We had one like this called called Jose in 1999 which actually did turn into a hurricane as it came over us. That was the last time we had hurricane conditions and I hope that this one doesn't break the winning streak we are having. Either way we have to keep an eye on it. My gut feeling is a turn to the north, passing close enough by to make for fun windsurfing (25-30 mph over Anu). We will see.

- weed still coming in

We still are seeing weed arriving in Antigua. Yesterday while out fishing 30 miles east of Antigua there were still big sargasso "lines". Many people are asking questions about it who missed some of the info that has been posted. Here in Antigua we have found species that are unique to sargassum found only in the Sargasso Sea and not found in the sargassum off Brazil. For more info check: http://antiguaisland.blogspot.com/2011/08/caribbean-sargasso-sea-weed-mystery.html
Would love to hear anything about the South currents we experienced here in may and june.

Weve had heavy rain since 2.am. this morning with sometimes heavy gusts of wind. There have been breaks but It seems to be getting heavier again at the moment at almost 6.30pm in the center of the island.  Rain is rushing in rivers down our road and through the next door properties but mostly missing us. We weren't prepared for quite this much rain and had to do a bit more furniture moving on the patio. Many roads according to my stepson are flooded and he had to take a detour earlier this afternoon. Electricity and cable have been out most of the day but managed to watch a rerun of 'madmen' before ir went off. The storm has pretty well passed us now and we were lucky as it wasn't bad. Power is back on and we hope to get a little drying out time before we grow scales!!!

Irene has pretty much left us unscathed with one palm tree branch being our only damage. Isolated reports of 50 mph gusts and one 70 mph gust on a hill on sw of d island. I hear not much flooding. Airport open in an hour and biz as usual tomorrow. Winds out the south now at about 20. No rain falling. All good. Just got a call from "Bushy" telling me that I can bring some boxes to collect some of his massive Edward mangos. Yes!

Here in the northern part of Antigua we are getting gusty winds and much rain. I need a boat to navigate my yard. Many of the churches have called sent out bulletins stating that there will be no church today. Irene really shifted closer to Antigua, I presume for a closer view. The airport is reported to be closed and I just hope everyone stays safe during this period.

as seen on the GP radar if you put it in motion the eye of this storm is scraping the south coast of Antigua. Here on the north coast we have been getting strong squalls for hours now and the winds have been between 35 to 40 mph. The garden is making plenty of noise but no trees or banches down. The sea down below is covered in "white horses" and the barrier reef off shore is now breaking.

The wind is blowing from the NE, a shift from the easterly direction at 0230
local. Looking at the Guadeloupe radar and other maps, the centre seems to be
closer to Antigua, though difficult to pinpoint as it is not clearly defined.
We may get a little more from IRENR than expected. VCBird is showing 30 kmph
winds while LaRaizet in Guadeloupe is only showing 13 kmph.

Very heavy rain accompanied by strong gusts were sustained for the past twenty
minutes. It has calmed down but still raining. Looking at the US Navy track,
Antigua may get some high winds later this morning, though Guadeloupe will get
the brunt of it. Amazing to see this go from Invest to Tropical Storm!

- not happy with this "tropical wave"
  • By eli fuller <eliantigua at gmail.com>
  • Date: Sat, 20 Aug 2011 06:22:22 -0400
To be honest, I am surprised at how quick these waves seem to come across the Atlantic. Anyway, this one "invest 97" looks very much like a depression and while its still hundreds of miles away, I can see squalls already just east of us on the GP radar. In this loop: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/flt/t2/flash-ir4.html you can see that the storm is blowing up as it enters the warmer waters near the islands. I have two boat trips today that I think will have to be either cancelled or modified.
The storm computer models have the middle of the storm going south of us and windguru and others are saying that it won't be that bad here in Antigua. I feel that we could possibly get some strong squalls tonight and tomorrow that will be more intense that the good guru is predicting.
I am going to take down awnings on my boats and put a few extra lines out later today. This one will surprise a few people if becomes a named tropical storm on our doorstep.
Keep checking this site for details.

- approaching wave
  • By eli fuller <eliantigua at gmail.com>
  • Date: Thu, 18 Aug 2011 10:41:10 -0400
All eyes in the hurricane community here in the Caribbean are facing east and checking out the tropical wave that's on it's way across the Atlantic. This wave is exhibiting signs of possible development and even before it was a blip on the satellite images, the "models" were forecasting it to develop. While many are still syaing that it will develop from a tropical wave into a tropical depression sometime over the weekend, some are suggesting that it could be a tropical storm as it enters the archipelago sometime around Sunday. I just checked and it has now been called an "invest" and is # 97L. Here is the latest image http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/east/catl/ft-l.jpg and http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/east/catl/vis-l.jpg
I don't think (hope) this will post a major threat to people at home over the weekend, but if you are planning any boat trips off shore for the weekend then I would suggest you make a slight change of plans. Winduru, magicseaweed and other windsurfing/surfing sites that use computer models to make their wind forecasts have been saying that we should see winds in the 30 to 40 knot range here on sunday with waves peaking anywhere from 12 to 20 feet. There has been a few changes in the forecast but generally all of them are saying that this wave will not be a wave when it gets here. Anyway, keep checking back here, and in the meantime if you are one of the people who is just learning about Tropical Weather and you want to learn more, then please visit this blog which speaks about all the hurricane jargon and gives you some better history and understanding about Antigua's storms: http://antiguaisland.blogspot.com/2011/08/good-info-on-hurricane-season-and.html

We are in a wet grey cocoon.  There hasn't been a lot of rain yet and only some thunder and lightening this morning, but its dark with high humidity. Lots more of this coming and we hope that's all there is.  I hope that the weather stays wet and disorganized for the rest of the season. Antigua is so green as everything is growing double speed, except  tomatoes., too wet!! I have one growing but I didnt plant it!!!  The thunder or lightening. not sure which keeps turning the TV off and on. Doesn't say a lot for the wires as we've had no wind.   I do not spend my days watching TV, its background while I paint  I have a couple of artist friends who need noise to work also. We are all keeping an eye out except Max and the cat [ new stray] they spend all day on the bed about a foot away from each other, wary even in sleep.

Took a boat load of happy Italians over to Barbuda for the day yesterday and had to weave my way through the masses of weed. Antigua and Barbuda is collecting huge amounts of the stuff on the windward shorelines. There is way more life in the weed before it gets here but once it's on the shore.... there is another story.
While we zip thought the online forecasts obsessing about what #92 or #92 may or may not do, you may find some relief in reading some cool info, links and photos on the current weed situation here which is puzzling many people. Tropical Storm Emily has passed us.. .only as  a storm, thank goodness.  She was a  weird one for sure and kept  everyone guessing on what was going on.  Still a good  "exercise in  preparedness"  for  us.. Most  Antiguans  are
"hurricane savvy"  having been on the  front lines so many times.. ( of course  CARNIVAL madness interfered a bit in  that as  the party  had to go on!)

Heartbreaking that  it seems HATI will get a direct hit as  that poor island and those people do not need any more  troubles.

However today  IS NOT OUR  USUAL  beautiful Caribbean day... It is  gusty and  overcast with  rain off and on... Looking at  sat picture  shows there is still lots of cloud mass overhead so will just have  to be patient and wait for  the clouds to pass!  Hope Dave on  STORM CARIB  is NOT correct in his statement -- but at least we have a  "heads up":
Back east, along 11N and 36W is an interesting specimen while getting ready to exit the African coast, and further inland, we have more players wanting to get on the field. Sometimes, you have a storm which paves the way for others as it clears out the dust and moistens the atmosphere. Emily might have been that front line player.

It is raining the whole barn right about now. There is no wind gusts however the rainfall is quite heavy here in Antigua. Just looked out in my yard and water is running quite fast and it's flooded. Got word that bolans and further south having alot of rain so there could be flash flooding quite soon. i'm not sure what decision will be taken regarding the carnival activities today but people seem determined to party regardless of the weather.

TODAY IS  CARNIVAL MONDAY in Antigua and  things are  in  full swing as we are thus far spared  any bad weather.   Eli  summed it up well in his earlier post "fooling the pros"!  .... This one has been a WIERD ONE... Yesterday no one even wanted to comment as it was hard to say WHAT was going on!   But  that is  WEATHER  ... ( one even  more  WIERD was  what was dubbed as  "LEFTY LENNY"... The  hurricane that developed in the  Caribbean and  came  LEFT back through the island chain in 1999 -  they usually travel right to left;  not  left to right!)... Just shows  weather is  not an easy thing to forecast or an  "exact"  science.

Our Met Office is  still saying  to us  STAY ALERT as things could change as the system gets closer .. With a possible turn... Most likely NOT as anything more than a STORM with rain and  wind gusts..    But  all models are now showing  the systems STAYING SOUTH... Closest being  near Guadeloupe  to our South...   Always good to be  on alert however, and be  prepared ... The next one may be more  serious...
No one likes  anyone who cries wolf but  sure is good to have  INFO on what is going on with  todays Internet as compared to the years we  had limited info on these  storms!

When the NHC, CrownWeather, weathercarib and others get their forecast so very wrong you know this business of hurricane forecasting still has far to go. They all expected this tropical wave (which once again looks like a proper depression at least) to be a depression yesterday and possibly a tropical storm today. Anyway as the satellite loops clearly showed, the upper level winds or wind shear (http://www.wunderground.com/education/shear.asp) busted up many of the thunderstorms at the center of the wave inhibiting it's development. The tropical wave also managed to suck up some dry air according to forecasters. Both of these things kept the low pressure system weak enough for it to maintain tropical wave status.
At this hour it looks to be developing once again and I think that within 15 minutes the nhc will say it's strengthened to the next level. Still, the sophisticated computer models say it will be passing way south of Antigua and Barbuda which is further good news.
My amateur guess it that A&B will experience very squally weather on Tuesday at what i think will be Tropical Storm Emily passes just to the south of us. Don't be surprised to get 40 knot squalls and isolated flooding. It is always good to be prepared for the worst while hoping for the best. My Adventure Antigua team have been busy getting all our boats put away safely as I'm in sunny NYC. Good luck to everyone back at home. I'm glad this hasn't stopped carnival. Enjoy jouvert morning!!! No rain on the radar at the moment!

UPDATES are  given on storm systems every 6  hours:   2 a.m.   8  a.m.  2 p.m. And
8  p.m.     (unless it is nearer land and more intense then more frequent updates are given)

THE ANTIGUA MET OFFICE web site is  http://www.antiguamet.com/
As our forecasters don't want to alarm the public unduly we are not hearing much at this time on this system.   Other sites I regularly check  ( you can goggle them:  National Hurricane Center;  WIND GURU;  Wundergroud.com  )

A few comments on  this  INVEST  91...

For those coming to Antigua  today and tomorrow:  it is still to early to confirm what we  will or will not get  with INVEST 91 ... If the system strengthens we may have  a CAT 1 Hurricane on our doorstep ( the weakest  of hurricanes).  The biggest "bore" is  this spoils our normally beautiful Antigua weather and  sunshine  and the  "after math" can be a bore with possible  electricity cuts and  airline flights interrupted for a day or so. But this too will pass and life will get  "back to normal" in time (depends on the storm damage as to how long!)

With any storm system the info  we  are given via our met office or web sites is  VIA satellite until the Hurricane Hunters  FLY into it and gather more accurate information on  wind speed/ directions etc.  The Hurricane Hunters are  tasked by the  National Hurricane Center to fly the system.  This is very costly and is not done until the system is close to land and is able to be reached from a base ( in the Caribbean the HURRICANE HUNTERS BASE is  ST CROIX) ... When a  system moves north they may fly it out of  the Florida Keys or USA based locations.

This is the "tasking" for TODAY  (posted below)  for  INVEST 91 and we will know much more on this system after this  data is gathered.   Those of us who post on STORM CARIB do so for those of you WHO ARE  READING THIS... To let you know what is going on on island.. BLESS GERT who started this  site after  Hurricane LUIS in 1995 when no one could get  info on what was going on down island...  Those bad back room boys - Lawyer Fuller and   I .. Were  in on this  from the start ( the reporting and posting)  and happy to see  son ELI following in his fathers foot steps in keeping people informed!  I have had many many comments  from those of you who appreciate this info.

Will post more as details of this system come to light and the  8  a.m.  Update will be with us  soon.    We are  watching

MARTHA!

It continues to  head our  way... Think  a lot of us will be  scrambling tomorrow... Hope for  a north turn as  some models show but  does not look encouraging!  Will be happy to learn what the Hurricane hunters find out as that will be more accurate than the  sat images we are  relying on at moment...

800 PM EDT SAT JUL 30 2011

FOR THE NORTH ATLANTIC...CARIBBEAN SEA AND THE GULF OF MEXICO...

SATELLITE IMAGES INDICATE THAT THE SHOWER ACTIVITY ASSOCIATED WITH A
LARGE LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM CENTERED ABOUT 750 MILES EAST OF THE
LESSER ANTILLES HAS CONTINUED TO BECOME BETTER ORGANIZED...AND A
TROPICAL DEPRESSION COULD FORM LATER TONIGHT OR SUNDAY. THIS SYSTEM
IS MOVING TOWARD THE WEST-NORTHWEST AT 15 TO 20 MPH AND HAS A HIGH
CHANCE...90 PERCENT...OF BECOMING A TROPICAL CYCLONE DURING THE
NEXT 48 HOURS. AN AIR FORCE PLANE IS SCHEDULED TO INVESTIGATE THIS
DISTURBANCE SUNDAY AFTERNOON. INTERESTS IN THE LESSER ANTILLES
SHOULD CLOSELY MONITOR THE PROGRESS OF THIS SYSTEM.

Antigua.. Get ready!

This system is looking a bit more  serious with the winds now predicted to be  65 MPH...nearly a hurricane.. All be it  a  CAT 1 .... This is the latest from the  National Hurricane center  below   and the link below is one track which  shows  (the  red line)  the track directly over Guadeloupe   ( the butterfly shaped island)   to our south..the  other track  - the orange one  (LBAR TRACK) just above is directly over  Antigua!  As our home is  very  "OPEN AIR" already doing a few  preps but not expecting things to start until Monday night.. Just spoke to our  boating buddies who are  camping out on  our little sister island,  Barbuda and they  will make their  way home tomorrow -  3  days earlier...
Had hoped to be there  in  our boat to... Just as well  it did not work out!   LIFE IN PARADISE!!  Never a dull moment....

From National Hurricane Center:

SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ASSOCIATED WITH A LARGE LOW PRESSURE
SYSTEM LOCATED ABOUT 900 MILES EAST OF THE WINDWARD ISLANDS ARE
GRADUALLY BECOMING BETTER ORGANIZED. SURFACE PRESSURES REMAIN LOW
IN THE AREA...AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS APPEAR FAVORABLE FOR A
TROPICAL DEPRESSION TO FORM OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS.  THIS
SYSTEM HAS A HIGH CHANCE...70 PERCENT...OF BECOMING A TROPICAL
CYCLONE DURING THE NEXT 48 HOURS AS IT MOVES WEST-NORTHWESTWARD AT
15 TO 20 MPH.

While it has been slow to develop, the Invest91L seems to be gathering steam
and the US NHC has it at 70% chance of developing. One good thing is the fact
that the ocean temperature is not that high. However as a few others have
posted, WindGuru using the GFS model is predicting 46mph at 10AM local. The
collection of models on Weather Underground shows the GFS track passing over
Antigua. We will keep an eye on this one.

Looks like some bumpy weather east of Antigua may roll in tomorrow night and Saturday. I notice the hurricane center now gives it a small chance of developing into a cyclone. I think it's no big threat to anyone until after it passes the Antilles. Plenty of African dust stopping development at the moment according to forecasters. More pics here:

- Wierd weather

We had weird weather yesterday on the south west coast of Antigua.  We a had gone to retrieve paintings from my show the evening before at Alportos at Jolly Harbour, great evening , great food, great music with Itchy feet. Angie on form as always. It was looking a bit grey as we left at 2pm and took the road to Sugar Ridge to drop some of my work at the new gallery there run by Joy . Then the rain started!!! By the time we arrived down the coast at Keyonna Beach, a new restaurant and Boutique Hotel on Turners Beach, the rain ,thunder and fork lightening was continuous.  We only went there to pick up our Max's lead left on a previous visit. But the bad weather was a good excuse to stay and have a really great lunch and a bottle of Pinot. Playing hooky on a Friday.!!! The weather didn't let up for an hour and a half until we cleared the area. It was so localized that Epi at Jolly Harbour was dry and so was the rest of the trip home to Buckleys. Beautiful sunshine again today temp 83 and a nice breeze. Mowing the lawn today, a Saturday pastime here as well as other countries. Hurricanes staying away so far, fingers crossed.  Off to do housework, my least favourite occupation. When Im busy painting I do none and then a frantic catch-up specially as our house is open and the dust loves us. Jan

- Lots of rain

On the way to work, a torrential downpour surprised us. It was very heavy but
lasted only a few minutes. At the moment, there is 100% cloud cover, and based
on the Meteo.fr radar image, we should be getting a lot more rain today!

it's so nice when the weather is perfect on Sundays. There was very little african dust out there today and you could see the other islands nearby for a change. The flamboyant tree outside my bedroom was brilliant red in front of the lovely blue ocean this am. Overall a picture perfect day with winds around 15 too. Finally the winds have calmed down a bit but still enough to keep it coolish.

So far June's conditions have been great and what I remember them being like. Windy, sunny and with no ground swell. Awesome sailing conditions. Next week looks like there may be a few days where tropical waves come through with wind surges up to 25 knots. It's the season for two anchors.

- RAIN!!!
  • By jan farara <janfarara at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Mon, 9 May 2011 11:12:54 +0000
.Well we now have the Dominica rain!! Its been raining solidly all night and is still going. The Cuban frogs seem to like it by the noise they are making. I was looking for a flock of Canadian geese...wrong country.   No idea how much rain came down yesterday and  last night but our cistern is overflowing which is very good news. Temp was 76 at  6.am but it was 76 at 3pm yesterday also. Does that mean we are heating up or cooling down? The birds just started singing, then the rain came down again so they have retreated into our house. We have open eaves and high ceilings so they think its a giant bird house. It rained all day mothers day so I forgot the beach and  I did what this mother does: watch tennis. Max has remembered his favourite trick of running in the rain and then jumping with muddy paws on the sofa . Next door neighbours are building again...I think.. The workman have deposited lots of sand and gravel. That took about an hour over the last 3 weeks. The rain will slow them down even more now!! The temperatures are staying cool I haven't seen mid 80's since last October in Buckleys .Need to go and check how warm the sea is.  I went in in February in honour of my daughter who was here on holiday and it wasn't that cold haven't had time since. The rain is even heavier and noisier now at just after 7am. I think its tea time, never will get used to morning coffee. Jan
