- Lots of Damage in SVG
 • By "Colvin "Koolkidd" Harry" <colvinharry at yahoo.co.uk>
 • Date: Tue, 12 Apr 2011 22:10:28 +0100 (BST)
Just to update you on what has happened in SVG, i took a trip as part of an assessment team to the northern part of the island to discover many houses flooded a bridge which has been washed out completly and another damaged badly by the heavy flow of water.

The damage done is in describable so i will let the photos do the talking, i will post a few of what i gathered while on the journey and what someone sent to me taken earlier in the morning.Cleanup crews are working tirelessly to have all roadways cleaned and the PM is out with his team to see the damage first hand.

Power is slowly being restored in the northern part of the country which had down poles and power lines, one of the major water supply system has been severely affected with the water supply cut to many hundreds in the northern and north-central parts of the island. The road leading to that water system intake is currently unaccessable since the road was washed away by rushing water.

I will post more as information comes to hand and i will include a few photos for you.If you wish to get more information or photos or permission to distribute the photos please feel free to send me an email.

Warm Regards,

reports are still coming in of a bridge in the Langley park area being washed away, ( centered map) and the bridge in Georgetown has overflowed its banks, (centered image) the attached photo shows the main road looking from north to south, this is from my sister's yard, the river is in the background, about 200 yards away, electricity and water is out in that area, two of the major reservoirs which feed that area is badly affected. There are reports of houses washed away, and of vehicles washed away.

- dry season??? not in Bequia
 • By "Greg & Liz" <cabana at vincysurf.com>
 • Date: Mon, 14 Feb 2011 18:05:15 -0400

What a strange dry season…I think we’ve had one day without any rain since November…that was Thursday or Friday last week…that must have been our ‘dry season’…very weird weather…we’ve had more overcast days this month alone than we normally get in a year…and downpours in February…everything is topsy turvy…the biggest blessing is that the water tanks are all full, and the shrubs and flowers are all looking gorgeous, plus the trees that were damaged in Hurricane Tomas are sprouting new shoots…

It’s official !! Mustique had the wettest month since September 1995 with November 2010 bringing 298 mm (11.73 inches of rain). The amazing thing is that our guests still went to the beaches every day and picnics and barbecues carried on as normal. How can it get better when nearly all your rain comes at night!

So much rain...heaven help St. Vincent with all their road slippage and the
people without roofs as I'm sure it is raining there as well...

The pasture below is well flooded...we call it Lake Julian when it gets like
this...the water looks to be over the road as well and the huge drains are
overflowing...

The dogs are curled up sleeping as they tend to do when it's a wet day, and
I'm grumpy...

I'd been hoping to go for tea at the Gingerbread this morning, but it is
certainly not a day to sit out beside the boardwalk under the Almond
trees...could be a good day to curl up with a book instead...

Here in Mustique we had 55mm of rain last night - exactly the same as Tomas gave us !! This morning it is accompanied by thunder and it is still raining hard and the day is as grey as an English summer day. Well at least my water bill should be nonexistent.

- Bequia update...the day after Tomas
 • By "Greg & Liz" <cabana at vincysurf.com>
 • Date: Sun, 31 Oct 2010 15:35:45 -0400

We lost electricity shortly after I posted yesterday…first the internet went, then my husband said he was shutting off the tv as the cable picture was defragmenting and we were getting a flickering signal and the lights were browning down and back up…and then the electricity went off…it was very frustrating not having any means to monitor what the storm was doing…our radio was useless as I was only able to bring in a station in Venezuela, presumably the Vincentian stations must have lost electicity as well…we were 24 hours without electricity here at Spring…some areas got their electric back on by 8 last night but the remainder came back on at varying times through the day today…

The wind hit right about on time, about 2 pm, and it hit with a vengeance…and blew and blew…I was surprised to see the palm trees in the plantation below us blowing the opposite way to the way they normally blow…I guess that was the counterclockwise swirl as we were on the south end of Tomas…and it rained and blew, it was quite loud…rain was pretty much horizontal…our French doors across the front deck were wet up to the top pane and that doesn’t happen normally…lots of tree damage, as the wind blew and we heard trees snap, we moved from door to door and window to window to see what had broken, after the worst of the wind seemed to have past, it just poured…at the end of the day when we finally got a break from the rain, I took the dogs up to the road for a little walk, and found our road was completely blocked with 9 very large limbs and small trees over it…we got that cleared last night before the light went and before the rain started up again, figuring that it would be a good idea in case we needed to get out for some reason, and we’d heard a car going down the hill so we knew that the main road was cleared at least enough to get passed…we spent a good amount of time today cleaning up, but in the garden we’ve barely made a dent in all the broken limbs of trees…actually my husband got a good section of the garden cleaned up from fallen limbs on the one side of the house, but we need to have somebody come in with a chain saw to take care of some of the damaged trees…

I phoned friends and employees this morning to see how everybody fared…many parts of Bequia seemed to have more wind today than they did during the hurricane…sounds like the worst hit parts of Bequia were Spring and St. Hilaire out beyond Friendship Bay Hotel…as far as I’ve heard so far, the only damage in Bequia has been to trees, nobody mentioned any roofs or any other damage…not so lucky St. Vincent…

Subject: Tomas

Our internet was disconnected Friday, and we didn't watch the local news, so Tomas was a surprise. Lots of wind, lots of rain. We had one coconut palm down, and I'll check the rest of the yard when it gets light. We got power back around 11 pm, and I caught up on email before going to sleep.

It is still windy, and maybe some light rain at 4:30, but the power and internet are still on.

We are on the southern end of the island, on a hill, and the eye passed north of St. Vincent, between us and St. Lucia, so we may not be typical as far as damage.
But we do have a pretty sturdy house. There aren't any more leaks in the roof than there always are.

More later.

- Tomas - the day after
 • By "Barefoot Yachts" <barebum at vincysurf.com>
 • Date: Sun, 31 Oct 2010 12:14:54 -0400

It's pretty messy.

There are reports of 3 deaths and 300 houses without roofs. We have no water, though electricity is back up. 1,000 people had to take to shelters. The banana crop and other sections of agriculture have been hit especially hard and will take a long, long time to recover. There are trees down all over the place and many roads are still blocked. There have also been some landslides.

The eye passed immediately north of St Vincent and south of St Lucia, early yesterday afternoon. There was the normal eerie stillness, and overhead it was brighter and less overcast. Late afternoon and well into the evening, though, the wind returned with a fury.

Some vessels have sunk, and there are a few high and dry on the rocks.

Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves said this morning that the damage runs into millions.

It's now clean-up time - and that is going to be a long and painful process.

Well, we had rain (55 mm) and wind from around 10.00 am Saturday until 10.00 pm that night. The eye passed over us around 2.00 pm and after that we had a real battering as the wind came in from the west. Plenty of trees and branches down around my house and the hotel but apart from a few outside light fixtures smashed, nothing serious. Power and communications were maintained throughout and the Mustique Company has already cleared trees from the road next to the hotel. Good luck to all in its path.

It is with a heavy heart I report on conditions in st vincent, many
homes have lost their roofs, my sister in Georgetown on the north
eastern side lost her roof, this was a well built house; I did not
expect this, across the island, report are coming in of downed
telephone lines, power is off. About 50 houses have lost their roofs.
unconfirmed reports are that a stone fell on a house in otley hall
with 3 persons in it. and a house missing in green hill. and the cargo
ship sting ray is about to run ashore in salt pond.
A yacht may also be experiencing trouble off cane garden point. St
Vincent will take a long time to recover from this one.

So far it’s been pretty much a non event in Bequia…we’ve just had a nice lull in the showers, which was a good time to get the dogs out to do their thing…sea is wild on the Atlantic side, I can see rain coming again…but we’ve only had ½ an inch of rain…wind is starting to pick up a bit with some good gusts…fingers crossed that this is as bad as it gets, but from the satellite it would appear that most of the system is still to the east of us…

Well, it's pretty wet and windy here at 11.40 a.m. though we still have power. Pretty dark outside. Quite a few trees and limbs down but no signs of any significant damage. Expecting that we may lose power shortly.

I’ll take a photo of the sea and try to post it…

The weather here is very still, apart from occasional gusts of about 15 Mph throughout the night, it was a typical night, sadly many of these islands did not seem to have taken this storm seriously and had not mobilized adequately yesterday or advised citizens before. The only thing to do now is to await the inevitable, as day breaks, will see how fast some more preparations can be made as this slow moving monster passes.

- thunder storm
 • By "Greg & Liz" <cabana at vincysurf.com>
 • Date: Fri, 29 Oct 2010 14:31:55 -0400

We just had a brief thunder storm…thunder, lightning and heavy rain for about 5 minutes…

Finally broke down and decided I should turn on what passes here for a radio station…sounds like a used car salesman…he said ‘rain comin’ then a little later he gave the report but downplayed it to rain all weekend with wind, possibility of it developing into something more…he might be right, but I don’t see any sense in downplaying that it might become a tropical storm or a hurricane before it has passed us by…oh well, so much for the local reports, I’ll stick to the satellite photos and reports from National Weather, etc.

- is this what will be Tomas???
 • By "Greg & Liz" <cabana at vincysurf.com>
 • Date: Fri, 29 Oct 2010 12:22:59 -0400

I don’t know why we aren’t hearing more about this invest, depression, tropical storm, whatever it is, that according to the satellite photos is coming soon…however, the rain has started…I just got the porch and pool deck cleaned off of anything that might blow, when the rain hit and I remembered that there was some laundry in the sun in the courtyard…my house now looks like a laundromat with sarongs and towels hanging all over…as I write the rain has stopped and the sun has come back out for now…when the next shower will come who knows…is this something to really worry about, who knows, but I’m doing my best to be prepared without going to extremes…

- finally a day with sunshine
 • By "Greg & Liz" <cabana at vincysurf.com>
 • Date: Tue, 5 Oct 2010 16:39:11 -0400

There was no rain today in Bequia…finally, after 5 days of frequent heavy downpours, thunder and lightning…I thought that system was never going to leave us, but it finally moved north and hopefully will be out of the islands soon…

I didn’t hear of any flooding or land slippages in Bequia, but I believe there were several in St. Vincent…certainly traffic was really bogged down and detours were required…

Good Day Storm Carib Friends! Its opened up to a partly cloudy morning with the sun peaking out but just after 10AM this morning the weather turned sour, the rain began as sprinkles then it came down heavy...its still pouring on the outside almost half an hour now...from the judge of the satellite we may be be for some more showers with overcast skies and maybe a thunderstorm or two.The temperature has dropped over the pass few hours and its becoming a cool Saturday into the afternoon i am guessing that the nearby islands are experiencing similar weather conditions as well.Would let you know if anything changes...Got some Pix for you attached Enjoy!

I’m beginning to wonder if this Tropical Low is ever going to move away from us…thunder and lightning with scattered showers off and on yesterday, but rain through the night and most of the day today…it’s very gloomy and has been all day…we’re so spoilt, one or two days of crappy weather a year and we complain about no sunshine…well, after a week of no rain, we were happy to have the rain, it’s surprising how dry things get in just a week...the pasture below us is now a lake, and everything is looking much greener and fresher…only 2 inches here at Spring, but we’re grateful for it…the mossies are awful, and last night we had the little flying ants in abundance…I’m happy to see that Igor is already further north…let’s hope he keeps tracking north before he comes too much further west…

Good day stormcarib Friends...Lots of Rain around the area!

Well that tropical wave just east and over the islands currently dumping lots of rain in the Southern Windwards,SVG,Grenada,Barbados and St Lucia should bear the brunt of this strong Tropical Wave (Now Tropical LO) on us,its moving ever so slowly westward at 5MPH! so this means rain.....more rain Folks Be very carefull this could cause minor floodings and land slippages accross the nation it has been designated Invest 92L by the Hurricane center and could become a storm in the next day or two,but will continue to bring us rain for antoerh 12-24 hours or more..so be on the alert and take extra care today! WIll update you later..Attached is the latest satellite pic from Wunderground.

I have attached a photo of how it looks outside...Overcast skies

The night of Monday the 9th of August was very stormy here in SVG…we had some severe lightning storms especially around the southern portion of the island this resulted in many landslides..some 30 reported to the national emergency organization, one mobile service provider encountered problems and went down for some hours and 80% of the radio stations went off the air late last night…by midday 3 were still off the air…today cleanup crews were busy cleaning landslides and fallen trees blocking the road. The local met office reported over 4 inches of rain within a 24 Hour period, this resulted in flooding in some areas namely arnos vale, a property in villa also lost its retaining wall.

I have attached some Photos....Take a look

- and the skies opened up......

From around 5 pm today the skies seemed to burst open with buckets of rain, not to mention the thunder and lightning. Made for a very interesting drive home, the rain ceased around 8:30 pm, and outside is very still, looking on the radar map from Martinique, it shows the large cloud mass which provided the show. It just demonstrates that we may be getting a very interesting August month weather wise, get prepared people.

Its 25 minutes to 12...Light rain on the outside and Thunderstorms in the distance, judging from the latest IR satellite imagery i have noticed the convective area or showers and storms over SVG intensify over the past few hours as they approach us...so we can expect more of this rainy stormy weather into the friday morning...the thunderstorms are getting closer now as i finish this post...lets hope nothing major happens to our radio transmitters and electrical applicances with the lightning strikes.have a Safe season everyone!

- WET JUNE
 • By "Stan Clayton" <stan at fireflymustique.com>

That will teach you to complain how dry it is!. June in Mustique was the wettest ever with over 8 inches of rain. More than we have had in the last six months combined. Half of it came when the “embryo” of hurricane Alex passed over us! We are expecting the worst for the remainder of the hurricane season and are taking the necessary precautions (making sure the wine cellar is full J)

Best Regards

Loving the rain…we are all happy campers…our water tanks are filling, pools are overflowing, plants are growing…

And the pups Ricky and Lucy are tracking in mud…oh well…lots of water to wash their feet and the floors …

We’ve had 7 inches over the past few day…wonderful…

Greetings all from an Overcast Rainy St Vincent and the Grenadines,it has been overcast here for most of the day with on and off showers from light to moderate at times, this morning there was some gusty winds from the East to East North East, but its currently overcast with lots of sand-flies and birds bustling around, quite still now with very little breeze and no rain but from the looks of the satellite we will be in for some more showers in the coming days with more and more moisture coming in from the Atlantic,so far its a quiet June and i hope it remains this way!

Stay safe all and remember to keep in mind its a busy hurricane season, you can never be over prepared.

Happy Fathers Day to management and all correspondents at Stormcarib!
