- HM Navy Caribbean Patrol
  • By Joanie Howard <joanie.howard1 at googlemail.com>
  • Date: Sat, 16 Apr 2011 23:13:05 +0100
I hear from my spies that Anguilla has had some rain, at last, though I don't think as much as St. Vincent, Grenada, Dominica etc.  It was desperately needed, my last guests (5 New Yorkers) who left 29th March didn't complain, thank goodness, but I got a panic email from my housekeeper the next day saying the cistern was empty and what to do. Poor Mr. Vantepool from Welches had to rush down with 4000 gallons and bang went the rent pretty much.  Ah well, c'est la vie.
This evening I collapsed in a heap in front of the television, and once again Her Majestys Navy Caribbean Patrol was on.  This time HMS Manchester was whizzing around trying to find drug runners, and after chasing a rather non descript boat for a while and circling a huge coconut which they thought was a large bag of cocaine, they pulled into Anguilla for some R&R.
Lovely pictures of happy sailors frolicking on Sandy Island and then even happier pictures of Jackie from Ripples in Sandy Ground saying how estatic she was to welcome the navy.  HMS Manchester then steamed hotfoot to Montserrat where they managed to catch some unfortunate Marijuana growers trying to smuggle some grass off the island in a boat with two 250HP outboards on the back which proved no match for the navy's helicopter.  The end result was the Montserrat Police looking very satisfied, the smugglers looking pretty dejected and the Manchester's crew looking exeedingly relieved that they had managed to capture more than a coconut.  Ah well, so is life, I can't wait to get back to Anguilla.
A goodnight to all,
JH

- Anguilla from afar

It is really not my remit to report on Anguilla at the moment as I am about 5000 miles away, but I miss all my friends and co-reporters on Stormcarib, and I get emails from various people saying that they miss my reports, which is very heartening.  According to my spies the weather is good but the seas are rough at the moment, and there is drama going on at Shoal Bay regarding the beach chairs in front of Madearimon, Uncle Ernies and Mac and Hanks. Also I finally got my underwater photos developed (35mil) and I had to show you a pic of 'Caterina' the little turtle I reported on back in January when diving on the Oosterdiep Wreck.
Here  in the cold Lake District we have had a couple or so of beautiful days, the snowdrops are just about finished, the daffodils are all coming out and the wild primsroses are appearing (I attach a pic for the gardeners of you).  My small brown dog is happy to be back on the fells in her natural habitat, the red spuirrels are incredibly greedy, they especially like hazel nuts and the birds are all mating or nesting in their best plumage, and singing too.  This everning when I walked Attie, Orion was hanging over Carrock Fell, simply magnificent. I read somewhere that Beetlegeuse (red giant, bottom left star) is so huge that if earth collided with it it would be like a gnat landing on the windshield of ones car, it's hard to get ones mind around that. I hope all is well with everyone and I wish you a goodnight.

P.S. I also attach a pic of the racehorse "Shoal Bay Dreamer', who is a baby steeplechaser that I bred, walking around in the paddock before her last race (she finished 5th).  She runs under the name of 'The Transatlantics' a syndicate of ladies of indeterminate age, half of whom are in America, the other half in Europe. (I will keep you informed when whe wins!).

- Echo's of Earl
  • By Joanie Howard <joanie.howard1 at googlemail.com>
  • Date: Tue, 1 Mar 2011 18:20:51 -0000
Well I am back in the old country, and very cold it is too, make the most of your sunshine my friends (those that are in it). It has been a strange sad time, sort of disjointed the way death and funerals are, but we gave my Mother a lovely send off and I think she would have been pleased.  Last night I collapsed in a heap in front of my TV (a novel experience for me as I don't have a TV in Anguilla) and scrolling through I saw 'Royal Navy Carribean Patrol' so hit the button and it was actually very interesting.  HMS Manchester (a destoyer) was patrolling the Caribbean when hurricane 'Earl' developed, she sailed out into the Atlantic in very rough conditions and then followed 'Earl' to  Anguilla and then the B.V.I. to assess damage etc.,
the helicopter flyover with the Governor on board showed quite alot of debris and standing water in Anguilla, but not much structural damage, (didn't show my garage doors!) but the B.V.I. fared much worse with boats of various sizes and shapes scattered around and roofs off buildings, it was reassuring to know that Her Majesty's Navy was there to help if needed.
I attach a couple of pics (for fans) of the small brown dog on the ferry between Anguilla and St. Martin, on the TVG and waiting for Eurostar.
My spies tell me it is very cool in Anguilla and that the Christmas winds are blowing from the North/East strongly again.
My best to everyone,
JH

P.S. Will somebody please report on the RORC yacht race.

- Ground Sea is back
  • By Joanie Howard <joanie.howard1 at googlemail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 18 Feb 2011 18:05:46 -0000
We have beautiful day and big rollers breaking again on the reefs on the North side of Anguilla, hope they don't take away all the sand that has slowly been coming back.
Sadly tomorrow my small brown dog and I have to climb back onto the Air France Airbus and fly to Paris, then the train and eurostar back to the Lake District, my Mother died on tuesday and it is a sad time for me, but she was 96 and went peacefully in her sleep and it is the small good things one has to keep hold of at these times.  The morning she left I was in the most beautiful place, diving at Cathedral Rock 15 or so miles north of Anguilla on the north side of West Cay by Dog Island, the underwater topography was spectacular the best I have seen in Anguilla, as good as Saba, huge columns of rock and coral reaching up to the light and breaking waves at the surface.  I have been privileged to go there especially on such a day.
I promised a pic of the Russian fleet and also a couple of underwater wildlife.  I wish the Yacht Indaba lots of luck in the RORC race next week I am sorry that I won't be out in the channel between Anguilla and ST. Martin at two o'clock in the morning cheering them on the night of 21st Feb. Safe passage to them.
Til next time, my best to everyone,
JH

- Great Day
  • By Joanie Howard <joanie.howard1 at googlemail.com>
  • Date: Mon, 14 Feb 2011 00:27:45 -0000
Today has been one of the better ones, cloudy to begin with then it cleared up, blue sky blue sea and about 82F we had a lovely dive with Dougie on Deep South reef, we went to Anguillita first but it was too murky so moved on, passed the Russian oligarch fleet, about 5 of the biggest most beautiful yachts anchored off Meads Bay(one even had about a 30ft sail boat on its deck), you have never seen so many dollars floating about on the Caribbean, sadly I had not taken my camara but will take it Tuesday and take some pics if they are still there.  Gwens was humming this afternoon, Tommy C from Philadelphia played in the String Band who were in top form and a good time was had by pretty much everyone (except maybe the woman with the sunburn in a red bikini!), then had some crayfish with chums at Kieth & Hanks which were delicious.  So what more can one ask for, even my small brown dog was smiling.
A good night to all,
JH

- Dark Clouds
  • By Joanie Howard <joanie.howard1 at googlemail.com>
  • Date: Wed, 9 Feb 2011 21:13:28 -0000
In the words of the immortal Waylon Jennings (he had some lovely lines -"The devil made me do it the first time, the second time I did it on me own"),  "dark clouds hanging over us", well, half an hour ago they were there but now it seems to have cleared up a bit.  We have had .13 of an inch of rain today, sharp showers just like the weatherman said, on and off all day. Some people snorkle whatever is going on, though what this fellow in the pic could see is beyond me, and as for the people walking on the beach (myself and my small brown dog included), its just another version of walking in the rain.  Hey ho, tomorrow I hope it will be a bit dryer, though I am very careful about wishing for dry weather in Anguilla, I can remember my father gingerly carrying his dirty washing-up water out to put on his bougainvillia.
Have a good evening everyone.

- Shifting Sands
  • By Joanie Howard <joanie.howard1 at googlemail.com>
  • Date: Mon, 7 Feb 2011 01:07:54 -0000
It has been very windy here the last couple of days with intermittant sharp showers, not really enough to put the rain gauge higher than .04 of an inch, pretty useless but at least it damps the dust down.  Yesterday I went with an elderly friend to have lunch at Cuisinarts Beach Bar, sadly it was closed due to the wind, the umbrellas were turning inside out apparently, so we ended up in their restaurant by the pool, that was pretty dicey as well, my friends salad blew away onto another table!  Today Gwens was packed (it was Tap's birthday and the official opening of the new Gwens), the music, as always, was great, but there were so many people, there was hardly room to dance, a bit of reconfiguration might be in order.
Looking through some of my old pics I was amazed to see just how much sand has gone from in front of Gwens, I attach one taken in 2006 and one recently and there is a huge difference, I always say when people ask me, that it will come back and it is just the sea washing the beach, but looking at the pics I wonder, I also attach one of Little Bay which is a magic place to snorkle as it is a fish nursery and swimming with the small fry is like swimming in diamonds surrounded by a turquoise world, it is also one of the few places on the island where the greater tropic bird (Bermuda Longtail to some of us) nest in the cliffs,  they are so spectacular and graceful with their long white tail feather. Alas no diving at the moment but hopefully the sea is supposed to lie down a bit by wednesday.
A very good night to everyone,
JH

- Rainfall
  • By Joanie Howard <joanie.howard1 at googlemail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 4 Feb 2011 01:18:48 -0000
Due to having this fancy new rain gauge, I can report accurately that here on the Searocks we got 4 inches in December 2010 and only 1.04 inches of rain in January 2011, we are in need of a bit more at the moment.  Tonight there were lovely rain clouds and rainbows at sunset but unfortunately they passed to the norrth.  The stars though have been wonderful the last few nights with Jupiter (I think its Jupiter, the planets shift about a bit so it's always difficult to know exactly which one without looking it up ) hanging over the western horizon, and the plough like a big question mark, completely upside down to how it appears in the UK, in the north pointing at Polaris, Cassiopiea (spelling?) like a big W or M directly up above with Orion and the Pliaedes (spelling again? I am dyslexic so you'll have to forgive me).  I remember when I used to be here in June/July time, if I got up a 4 in the morning you could see the Southern Cross  to the East of St. Martin just above the horizon, amazing to think that to people in the Falklands or New Zealand or Australia it was almost right above them, talking of Australia a thought for all those who have just experience cyclone Yasi, it appears it was a biggy.
Tortola the other day reported on Seaglass, we have been picking it up here for a while in Anguilla, it is precious and lovely and soon there will only be Seaplastic, I attach a couple of pics of what to look for and how it can look when mounted in silver or gold.  It there are any shiney bits throw in back into the ocean to get frosted some more.
A goodnight to all,

- Powder Room
  • By Joanie Howard <joanie.howard1 at googlemail.com>
  • Date: Sun, 30 Jan 2011 23:06:36 -0000
It was quite cloudy this morning when I got up at some ungodly hour to watch the last set of the Australian Open Tennis finals (very boring it was too, not the sort of creative tennis that I have got used to seeing from Federer and Nadal). The good news is though, we had .20 of an inch of rain last night which was very welcome for plants pool and cistern.  This afternoon at Gwen's there were a mass of people, and Henri our local French artist has completed painting the powder room, it is charming as powder rooms go, in fact I would say it is THE place to powder ones nose in the Caribbean (see pics). I also attach one of the eroded beach in front of Cuisinart at Rendevous Bay (St. Martin in the background), but I think the sand is starting to come back a bit and also one of a lovely couple happily mashing sand at Gwens.  The sea is calm a clear at the moment so I will dive with Dougie tomorrow AM, it is so relaxing to spend an hour in another world where no one can get you.
Have a good evening everyone,

Anguilla has just sparkled today, calm sea, blue blue sky, breeze and lovely dive with Dougie this AM at 'Face in the Wall', we saw spotted Drums, one of the biggest lobsters I have ever seen (two of his legs would have fed me) eels but best of all a couple of Dophins joined us, a mother and baby.  A real treat.  This afternoon the the middle class boats were racing once more 'Da Storm' won again,  I took a couple of pics this time.
A good evening to everyone.

- Rainbow City
  • By Joanie Howard <joanie.howard1 at googlemail.com>
  • Date: Sun, 16 Jan 2011 23:19:15 -0000
It has been a magic day here today, about 81F, cool breeze, the odd shower and the most beautiful rainbow. This AM we had a lovely relaxed drifting dive, saw cobia, a big puffa fish a reef shark cruising  and Caterina (the little turtle I talked about before) she was sleeping on her wreck and when we came down woke up, flapped around us a bit, went to the surface for a breath of air then came back settled on the deck of the Oosterdiep and went back to sleep.  She really is enchanting, and she doesn't seem to mind us at all.  This afternoon at Gwen's we had first the rainbow then the squall, Murphy's law that the band had just set up to play outside when it started to rain, so everything had to be unplugged and moved inside, another 25 minutes, then the rain stopped so they moved outside again, and so it goes.  Frank Bruno (the boxer) may have done a bit of 'ducking and diving' but I have been 'dancing and diving'. To top it all off three of the big Anguilla racing slopes had a practise run from Island Harbour to Shoal bay and back right in front of the house at sunset, they were a lovely sight tacking between the reefs.  A good day I think.
Regards to all,

A magic day here today, 82F on land a 73F at 70ft below the Caribbean at Dog Island.  We had a beautiful dive.
I am very happy to say that Gwen's  is fully operational again every day, some people think it is still closed during the week but that is not the case, I attach a couple of pics of this afternoon.
I wish warmth to Stormcarib followers in northern climes and a good night to all.

- Wreck Merpal
  • By Joanie Howard <joanie.howard1 at googlemail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 7 Jan 2011 23:01:39 -0000
It has been a beautiful calm day here, quite warm (82F) after what we have been having recently, both the sea and the wind seem to be taking a nap. This AM I flipped into a rather murky Caribben to have a look at the Merpal wreck, I had never been diving on her before as she was sunk in about 85ft in 1990 and then when Hurricane Lenny flooded all the government files, they lost her position (a likely tale, mis-filing could have been a possibility), Dougie found her again last March or April and she is lying pretty much intact.  What is interesting about her, apart from the beautiful pair of file fish, lovely little octopus, speckeldy moray and spectcular atlantic spadefish among others, is that she was used during the war in the evacuation of Dunkirk (this information comes, I believe, from Steve Donahue).  As I swam around her I tried to imagine what she would have looked like on the surface of a grey English Channel full of exhausted or wounded soldiers, and it was quite eerie, a ghost ship from the past.  I was diving a couple of years ago on 'The Thistlegorm' in the Red Sea off Sinai, she was full of Bedford trucks,Triumph motorcycles, waders (??) amunition etc., etc., that was a strange feeling as well but she was an official war grave.
A good evening to everyone,

- Christmas Winds
  • By Joanie Howard <joanie.howard1 at googlemail.com>
  • Date: Sun, 2 Jan 2011 23:28:52 -0000
Compared to the rest of the Northern Hemisphire, I would describe the weather here as very fresh, but for Anguilla it is definitely cool, the temperature as I type is about 75F with a strong (and I mean strong) East North/East wind blowing.  It is like the Christmas winds of old which I haven't felt for a couple of years now, there were actually people dancing in hoodies at Gwens this afternoon but everyone was still dancing, it was a good way to stay warm.  Last night the small brown person I live with was definitely a chilli-dog (see pic).  This morning there was a huge beautiful rainbow arching across in front of the storm clouds, it was so big I could only take a pic of half of it, Anguilla is not called rainbow city for nothing.  The beaches have taken a pumelling with the big seas I am told Rendevous Bay has lost alot more sand but the sand at Shoal Bay East just keeps moving from one end to the other, Savanah/Junks hole is lovely at the moment, clear and calm. My rain gauge said we had nearly a quarter of an inch last night, so the plants are happy where they haven't been stripped of their leaves by the sea-blast, the airport is awash with private jets and there is a new occupation here 'jet spotting' as opposed to trainspotting, Michael Jordan's has a large basketball on the tail.
I wish everyone a goodnight,

- Big Seas
  • By Joanie Howard <joanie.howard1 at googlemail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 31 Dec 2010 00:19:03 -0000
Steve was right when he said the north side of Anguilla would be dangerous for swimmers, a big sea has been coming in for the last couple of days,(no diving, sadly) sometimes it looks as though the ocean is boiling in front of the house.  It has been overcast all day with a strong breeze, one could almost say wind, coming from the North North/East, I had to carry my small brown dog down from Gwen's (which by the way is open now everyday for lunch) onto Shoal Bay as she nearly got turned over yesterday by a big wave, she is, however, extremely happy (as am I) to be back in Anguilla after the blizzards of Boston. Yesterday my rain gauge said we had .34 of an inch overnight, good for the cistern.  I would like to say to Lisette from Dominica that all of us dog people sympathise very much with her over the loss of her 'Mindy'.
A very Happy New Year to all and hopefully fairly hurricane free one, and thanks to Gert and Dave for the website.
Kind regards,

- ROUGH SEAS UPDATE
  • By "Steve Donahue" <steve at anguilla-weather.com>
  • Date: Wed, 29 Dec 2010 09:04:15 -0400

Wednesday, December 29, 2010, 8:30 AM – Not much change from yesterday (see below), except the forecast for seas has them now slightly larger, and winds now forecast only in the low 20’s – still from the NE.  Clouds and showers for today with possibly some sun Thursday as the system moves east.  Small craft advisory now in effect through Sat. morning.  Bathers should stay out of the water on the north-facing beaches – especially on Thursday.  Barnes, Meads, Crocus, Limestone and Captains Bays will be especially hazardous. Should be some outstanding photo opportunities at Windward Point on Thursday.

(Information based on current forecasts/conditions – subject to change.)

Tuesday, December 28, 2010, 12:00 noon - Appears that Mother Nature will throw a little bit of everything at us the next few days – seas, wind, rain.  First, forecasts call for some of the largest seas so far this season starting early Wed. through early Friday.  High seas marine forecast calls for 9-11 foot NW swells, which means 12 - 15+ foot surf from the NW is possible on the north beaches.  By Thursday, these seas could be life threatening for any bathers crazy enough to venture in the water.  Add to this NE gusty winds of 20 – 25 mph with higher gusts later Wednesday and on Thursday, causing wind-driven spray and erosion.  Finally, a frontal boundary approaching from the west will give us an increasing chance of showers – could be heavy at times, especially Thursday.  Winds in excess of 30 mph are possible in passing squalls.  By late Thursday, the south beaches can expect ground seas for several days as the system moves off to our SE.

The NWS has already issued a small craft advisory tonight through Friday evening, and the Meteorological Dept. in Curacao has issued a high surf advisory for St.. Martin’s north shore.

Summary – Wed. through Fri., expect very rough seas from the NW, gusty wind conditions from the NE, ground seas on the south beaches and an increasing chance of showers/rain.

- Home from the snow
  • By Joanie Howard <joanie.howard1 at googlemail.com>

Evening Everyone,
Well I have been very fortunate to get back to Anguilla from an extremely cold and snowy Boston, they even had wind gusts of 80MPH on Nantucket early yesterday morning, hurricane force no less. Jet Blue performed very well on the way up except 6US$ for a piece of processed cheese and a couple of tiny crackers did not seem value for money. However, this morning at 5AM when I arrived at Logan Airport (temperature was 15degrees F) there were about 1000 travellers trying to check in in front of me and the poor Jet Blue staff trying to cope, some people had been there for 2 days, I managed to get myself (plus small brown dog) to the front of the queue, as there is only one direct flight Boston to St. Martin per week  I knew I would miss it if I stood in line, our pilot was stranded in a snow drift in Maine but they found another and after de-icing the plane twice and sitting on the runway for what seemed a very long time we arrived in St, Martin about 2 hours or so late, but we arrived.  The wave of warm air as we got off the plane was blissful.  It is fairly overcast and humid here, but a bit of a breeze and not having to put on boots, 2 coats, fleecey hat scarf and gloves to walk Attie is a luxury.  I attach a couple of pics of what I left. Hope everyone had a lovely Christmas.

Sat., 24 December, 10:00 AM – Looks like a bit of an easing in the rough seas for today and part of tomorrow, but then they return again Sat. night and Sunday – from the NW near the same intensity as this past Wed./Thursday - before dying off on Monday.  Unfortunately, for those looking for a break, forecasts now call for the 9 – 12 ft. N swells to return again next Wed. or Thursday – with the added problem of gusty NE winds AND larger ground seas on the south coast.  While it’s still pretty far off for any kind of an accurate forecast, these conditions could last through next weekend.  More next week if the forecast looks accurate.

22 December.  8:00 AM – Not much change from yesterdays’ forecasts (details below) except seas will start building late today and will peak Thursday slightly rougher than yesterday’s forecast.  Also, after subsiding a bit on Friday, they will again build to the same height on Sunday.  The NWS small craft advisory is now in effect through Sunday.  As stated below, boaters/bathers should take necessary precautions.

(Information based on current forecasts/conditions – subject to change.)

21 December.  8:30 AM - Anguilla will be experiencing high seas for several days starting late Wednesday.  Forecasts call for seas to start building late Wednesday  and by Thursday will be from the NNW and then N in the 9 – 12 foot range. These conditions will peak late Thursday/early Friday and SLIGHTLY subside by Saturday, but build again by Sunday, then finally subsiding on Monday.  The north shore especially will experience very rough sea conditions with probable beach erosion.  The south will probably receive the resulting ground seas starting Friday.  Because of the rough sea conditions, swimmers are urged to stay out of the water on the north facing beaches and boaters should use caution.  A small craft advisory has already been issued by the NWS for late Wednesday through Friday.  Good news is the winds will be light to moderate from the NE.

A beautiful still evening here tonight (as long as you can ignore the mosis) the moon is silvery nearly full and lighting up the ocean and Island Harbour, a good night I think.
I wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and a peaceful and joyous new year.  I am off to the grandchildren in Boston Mass., for a week tomorrow (courtesy of Jet Blue, I have never flown with them before so will report when I get back) with no winter clothes, I will have to borrow off my daughter and small brown dog Atti will have to borrow off my 2yr old grandaughter though she already has her fur coat on!
Best wishes and Happy Christmas,

Woke up this morning to 78 degrees, grey clouds, intermittent squalls and we were supposed to be at Sandy Ground to go diving at 9AM, I almost crawled back into my bed with my book, but thought to myself 'don't be so pathetic!" so off we went.  Well we had the most lovely dive with Dougie, a wreck, lovely Deep South reef which we drifted over, saw a big cobia, turtles, a spotted eagle ray a beautiful school of black margates all dressed in their Sunday best, a couple of little green spotted eels, one that had forgotten its tail which was hanging out one side of a coral head while the front end was deep in a hole and I am sure it thought it was invisible, I resisted tweeking its tail.  There were of course all the usual barracudas, angel fish, rock beauties etc.  So it just goes to show, you never can tell.
Gwens was in full swing and has had half it's first coat of paint.
A good evening to everyone,

Good Evening again everyone,
We have had a fairly dark and stormy (isn't that a lethal drink?) day here in Anguilla, big seas, strong north winds, 79 degrees, not much sun bathing for visitors and definitely no diving, but it has been a silver lining for the kite surfers, a fit young American guy says the point at Shoal Bay East is one of the best places in the world when the wind is right, have a look at the photos. Incidently we had nearly half an inch of rain last night and it is wonderful sleeping weather.
All the best,

I hadn't meant to report anything tonight, but I can't help it. Gods had his paintbox out again. It's been a lovely day, the ocean has quietened down and the breeze less of a wind, but the colours of the sky have been spectacular, the photos don't do them justice.
The only unfortunate thing has been (I don't know if you remember but I reported not long ago about an amazing lady with one half of the top of her bikini empty and blowing in the wind) well I was swimming with another amazing lady who has had the same medical trauma and she dived elegantly into the sea and what she calls her 'chicken fillet' popped out and sank.   We spent about an hour looking for it (I had stupidly left my mask at home).  People kept stopping and saying "have you lost your contact lens?'  we said 'er no, something a bit bigger'.  It is made of tranparent gell, specially for swimming, so was virtually invisible even though the water was quite clear.  We didn't find it needless to say, but will look again tomorrow you never know it could have washed up on the beach, I don't think anyone will pick it up, just think it is a strange kind of jellyfish.  We walked back down the beach in fits of giggles about how we could replace it.  As I said an amazing lady.
Goodnight Everyone,
JH

Good Evening Everyone,
Due to having 1.10 inches (according to my new rain gauge) in the last 24 hours, 2 of the filters on my internal telephone wires gave up the ghost and I have been without internet or nettalk for two days.  The depression seems to have moved off but has left the winds coming more from the east south/east than the north/east where they were coming from before.  This evening while walking my small brown dog on Shoal Bay East we had the beginnings of a lovely sunset, talk about romantic!  All engaged couples take note for your honeymoons (see photo. Will someone please tell me how to hold the camara straight!).  It was just stunning.
Regards to all,

A good friend has brought me a very fancy new rain gauge, made from, would you believe, reconstituted bullet proof glass (where has it been before I ask myself?).  Well last night we had real rain for the first time in about 3 weeks, I had been convinced that just having a proper rain gauge would mean it didn't rain for months.  We got .85 of an inch (see photo).
It has been overcast and muggy for most of the day due to the blob from the south moving over us, but at least I got some bills paid and some letters and Christmas cards written, in a past life I used to send about 200 Christmas cards and now I just send about 20.  Just shows how many good friends one has.
A good Evening to everyone,

A beautiful day here, Anguilla seemed literally wrapped in blue. Finally got to put on my scuba gear again and had a lovely dive on the Oosterdiep wreck, saw turtles, one little one, about the size of a dinner plate, which kept swimming around us, as if to say 'naff off and let me get back to having my nap on the deck'  as soon as we started to come back up it went and settled on what is left of the wheelhouse and closed its eyes. Alot of teenage Barracudas, a small shark (reef I think) lobsters, pompano, Atlantic spadefish, a big green spotted moray eel and all the usual Angels etc.  What was interesting though was, I did a dive on 21 Dec 2009 and recorded the air temperature at 90 degrees, today it was 81. Quite a difference.
Well I'm off to wash the salt off, a good evening to you all.

A lovely day here in Anguilla, hot sun, cool breeze and clear  visability.  You could almost touch St. Barts.  Went to Junks Hole to see if any sea glass had come up in the recent big seas (my shell collection is now so large, I mostly pick up sea glass as I think there will soon only be sea plastic) and my friend Trudie makes it into the most lovely jewelry, some of it is nearly 300 years old  from old wine bottles from the wreck of 'El Bon Consejo'. (spanish readers please forgive my spelling).  The hurricane season may be officially over but as one of our correspondents said "until the fat lady sings", we still need to keep a watchful eye.
So interesting to see 'Da Wayward Sailors' picks of sailing in the BVI, when I was there and we used to sail by Island sloop from Roadtown to Norman, Peter Island or Virgin Gorda in the 50's it still looks pretty much the same, except for a few more houses, when later involved in running a charter fishing boat out of Yatchhaven, ST. Thomas I once water-skied fom Roadtown to Charlotte Amalie behind a 49ft Pacemaker (I must admit the diesal fumes were awful and I am much more of  a sailboat person) but I do I feel that I used to know St. Francis Drake Channel quite well!
Have a good evening everyone,

- Feels like Christmas winds

Evening Everybody,
I has been another cool windy day here in Anguilla, we have had a couple of showers but not enough our end of the island to make a difference to cisterns or pools.  The Atlantic to the north has  again been full of whitecaps with some large rollers coming in, my dive computer tells me it is 81F as I write, it does really feel like Christmas winds, very different from last year when I returned, it was very hot then, no breeze and felt more  like August.  I was hoping to go diving this AM but no chance, I'll just have to wait for things to lie down a bit, none of the dive boats have been out to my knowledge.
Gwens was open again today (see a couple of photos attached) there were ribs and chicken on the barbecue and lovely salads from a coolbox, rum punch, soft drinks and beer, best of all though music.
Have a good night,
JH

P.S. My last photo is just to show what a happy place Gwen's is, for all ages, as you can gather from the drinks on the table.

I am at Viceroy and heard the pounding of the sea all night against the sea wall. As I sit on my patio I can see massive waves crashing over the top of the coral. The sea looks calm, no white caps compared to all week but there is sea swell for sure.

Evening All,
I hope turkeys are giving pleasure up and down the Caribbean, it is not an English or West Indian holiday but I know many people happily stuffing not only the turkeys but themselves as I write.  Not the best of days if you are turkey however.
I met a lovely lady (from Indiana I think) while walking my small brown dog on the beach the other day, she had a lovely tan, good figure and was wearing a rather small bikini, what was remarkable about her was that one side of her bikini top was quite normal, full of her as it were, the other side was quite empty and blowing in the breeze. Now I spend quite alot of my time working in a hospice when in England and am accustomed to rather alot of grief one way or another, but her nonchalance and joi de vivre was an inspiration to see,  a positive attitude to cancer cannot be emphasized enough and she epitomised that, as something like 7 out of 10 of us will have cancer of some sort at sometime in our lives, I thought to myself - very well done you.
Good feasting to those celebrating Thanksgiving.

Good Morning,
It is a beautiful sunny breezy (really quite breezy, you could even say windy) day here in Anguilla, there is a choppy sea with masses of whitecaps to the north and the yellow birds seem to be getting increasingly hungry, I found one in my kitchen in MY sugar bowl yesterday.
For those of you concerned, the clean up at Gwen's is nearly complete and a huge thankyou to everyone who has emailed  and pledged.  It is hoped the rebuilding will start in the next couple of days. I attach some photos taken yesterday, and also a picture of a destructive dragon!
I will keep you all up to speed.

We arrived in AXA thanks to Carl Thomas and Anguilla Air Services. They were punctual and despite the gusts we had a lovely 8 min. flight.

Upon arrival it was slightly chilly. Tonight we wore long sleeves. Dining at Mangos at Barnes Bay we could enjoy the rough Atlantic. The waves are choppy like a washing machines. Tomorrow will check out Cove Bay.

Good Evening Eveyone,
We have had a sadness today, Gwen's Reggae Bar burnt down (see photos) happily no one was hurt.  Apparently there was a loud bang from the kitchen area and Terrinne (Gwen's beautiful daughter), who was behind the bar, ran to see and was greated by an inferno.  They will build it back better, but Gwen and Tap had only liability insurance, so anyone who has had a lovely time there and would like to donate something to help put it back together please bring a a pic-nic and come along tomorrow Sunday 21 November at lunch time and give Gwen and Tap whatever, There is going to be music and you will be able to mash some sand!  Those of you who are farther afield, and I know there are many of you, please email me and I will let you know details of how to donate to Gwens.  I also attach a photo of Shoal looking almost at its loveliest.
A good night to all,

20 Nov.  8:00 AM - Anguilla over the next several days will be experiencing the “double whammy” of both high seas and strong winds.  Forecasts call for seas to start building Sunday and by Monday will be from the NE in the 11 – 14 foot range.  At the same time, winds will build from the NE in 22 – 27 mph range with gusts in the low 30’s.  These conditions will peak on Monday and SLOWLY subside by late Wednesday/Thursday.  The north shore especially will experience very rough sea conditions with probable beach erosion.  Because of the rough sea conditions, swimmers are urged to stay out of the water on the north facing beaches and boaters should use caution.  A small craft warning will be (or has already been) issued.

- Lovely Day
  • By Joanie Howard <joanie.howard1 at googlemail.com>

It has been a lovely day here in Anguilla, a stiff north, north/east breeze and bright warm sunshine, Oh, and before I forget thanks to Grenada for pinpointing the space station going over last evening, it was vey clear here and an amazing sight. I went down early this morning (with my small brown dog) to Rendevous Bay which I have always thought of as the second most beautiful beach on Anguilla after Shoal Bay, (not counting Little Bay which is gem in itself), and I was downhearted, I think that is the only word, there is very little sand in front of Cuisinart Hotel and even less in front of The Dune Preserve, this is partly due to Earl, but also to us I think, the sea takes away and the sea will bring back but I remember the first few years (the first one was 1960) I came to Anguilla and all these lovely bays and beaches were fringed with Coconuts, I know Coconuts only live 30 or 40 years but they are self seeding and help keep the sand on the beaches, now they (and disease) have taken the coconuts away and put resorts there instead, and the beaches are suffering, resorts and coconuts can live together I think.  I belong to The Anguillian Beautification Club (I know quite a mouthful) and am trying to persuade them to have a "Plant a Palm" policy, but who knows if it will work.  Those of us who have been lucky enough to see the unmatched beauty of the Caribbean (I have lived on Tortola, St. Kitts. Vieques and St. Thomas as well as Anguilla) must try, if we can, in whatever little way to preserve that beauty.
I wish goodnight to all,

Evening Everyone,
Eli and de wayward sailor were not kidding when they said 12 ft rollers would be coming in from the north this weekend, just about as big as I have seen them, causing havoc with the beaches on the north side of Anguilla.  It has been a clear still hot day here, the mosi's at their absolute best, with practically no breeze and all the rain we have had recently. Fresh new English blood appears to be very appealing.
There seems to be a mess approaching from the south, and the tracking seems a bit hit and miss, there is also a large mess coming over the Atlantic. We will watch and see.  I hope it is not Virgine heading for the fat virgin!

They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

I have been listening to a record my father brought back from Haiti in about 1958, the singer is a fellow called Guy Durisior (I think) and the songs are all in French, Spanish, Patois or English.  It is callled Hotel Riviera Haiti and is a wonderful album.  It has made me think, with all the grief that Haiti is going through at the moment, this is nothing new for her, I attach an article my father wrote for International Spotlight in 1969 (for any history buffs among you).  The point is this though, wonderful art and music has come out of Haiti for a long time, much enjoyed by many of us, but she has always struggled, that doesn't mean to say, however, that the Caribbean and the larger world cannot help.  I was appalled to read that America's aid has not been sent due to fears of it not getting to the right place, there must be a better solution somewhere.
It has been a lovely day today in Anguilla, a bit overcast tonight though due to Tomas's Tail.

Good Evening Everyone,
I am happy to say that Air Chance deposited me and my small brown dog Attie on time yesterday in St. Martin, having left an extremely wet and unpleasant North of England it was a joy to breath in the rather hazy Caribbean air and feel warm.  Both St. Martin and Anguilla look lush and green, due no doubt to all the recent rain and though there was a great grey cloud over SXM today, looking to the north from my house the sky was clear and blue though it has clouded over here more this evening.  Shoal Bay was pretty deserted but Gwens Reggae Bar will be open  for the first time this season on Sunday so Attie and I look forward to ribs, rum and Tap's scratch band for the first time in seven months.
It looks as though there are several systems coming towards us over the Atlantic which could be something or nothing -time will tell.  I do hope (like everyone else) that Haiti doesn't get hit too heavily by the rather disorganised Tomas, likewise all the other islands in his path.  The temperature here today was 86 degrees and last night 74 and at the moment there is a good breeze blowing from the East/South East. There is no sign however of my yellow birds I hope they weren't blown away by Earl, I did see the Killi Killi (American Sparrow Hawk) though, hunting over the bush.
Gert needs help so please anyone  who enjoys or keeps an eye on all the reports on Stormcarib please put your hand in your pocket.  I myself am trying to figure out how to send him something, as I never put my credit card on the internet I will have to figure out another way.
Best regards,
JH

P.S. I have been wondering where John Burnie and the Yatch Indaba (Guadaloupe) are, I hope they didn't get swiped by Tomas.

It's a "picture postcard" kinda day here in Anguilla - bright blue skies, gentle breeze, white puffy clouds, calm seas. Make's you glad to be alive! Saba (picture below) is 36 miles away but today looks like it's right out in the middle of the channel.  Can even see the houses in Hells Gate.

Evening everyone,
Hope you are safe and well and hopefully dry.  This (and I quote from the lovely young Frenchman staying in my house)
"ouahhhh
i have never seen rain like this in the caribbean in 10 years
4 days non stop so for sure
pool overfloading same as cistern which is overfloading too much
I wonder if the pipi of the overfloading is big enough in this circumstances (it is a 6inch PVC pipe)
funny thing we had this one 2 days ago from the est then west then this morning return from the south so airport school port - closed since two days
everything OK except the garage a bit floaded but OK."
All I can say is God Bless Lanig, and everyone else for that matter.

- MORE RAIN

So woke up this AM and the Good Lord finally gave us some sun after 4 days.  Gotcha!  After just 2 hours of sun, the skies have opened up again and it is ANOTHER downpour!  Rain rate as high as 7 in. per hour. and winds of 40 mph.  And now for the first time in 4 days, we have thunder and lightning.  Got ½ inch in just a few minutes.  Sure am glad I opened the house to let it dry out!  More later!

- RAIN
  • By "Steve Donahue" <tainos at anguillanet.com>
  • Date: Wed, 6 Oct 2010 10:06:42 -0400

OK, this is getting old now.  We had a pretty quite night with just some wind (32 mph gust about 2:30) with very little rain – until about 9:00 this morning, when the skies opened up AGAIN!  Had another 0.5 in. of rain, and still coming down hard.  But now there is thunder off in the distance – first time in 3 days we’ve heard that.  Lucky for us, we are a flat little island (unlike St. Barths/St. Martin and Saba), so we just have LOTS of standing water, and the salt ponds are all filling up – but handeling the rain.  With the seas from the south, the south-facing beaches are once again getting pounded and experiencing more erosion.  Sounds like others down south are getting a bit of a break, but not here.

Another heavy band just came thru, giving us another 0.1 in of rain and wind gusts of 38 MPH.  Just had to empty out some water from the pool as it was overflowing.  Also, schools in Anguilla were closed, but on my trip earlier this morning, found no evidence of flooding, just some large puddles of standing water.

Some pretty angry sea, as shown below.

  • Date: Tue, 5 Oct 2010 08:41:58 -0400

Feels like we’re having a “mini-hurricane” here in Anguilla.  Heavy rain started around 1:00 AM, then wind really picked up around 5:00 AM – steady 22 – 27 mph, with gusts to 45 mph.  So far, 3.9 in. since 1:00 PM yesterday and from the looks of it, have more to come. Had 1.78 in since 1:00 AM, but just started raining heavy again few minutes ago.  As before, posted additional graphs on the rain event on my site below, and am now updating every 5 minutes.

The rain started in ernest around 1:00 AM and then the skies really opened up – rain rates of 4+ in. per hour.  As of 2:30, already picked up 1.5 in. – and it’s still raining.  And why am I writing this at 2:30 in the morning?  The rain is so hard beating down on the roof, no way I can sleep.  Hopefully, it will let up at some point.  Also, I’ve added some special rain graphs to my site below until this mess gets outta here.  I would expect St. Martin to have some serious flooding right about now,

Except for a few brief downpours, we’ve had a nice, gentle rain all day long – mostly a rain rate of less that ¼ in. per hour, and the winds have been very light out of the S and SSE.  Great day for reading a good book.   So far, 1.14 in., but looks like more on the way.  All this rain has sure “greened” the trees up after Earl turned everything all brown.  It’s been a while since we’ve seen Anguilla this green – even had to cut the grass this weekend!

  • By "Steve Donahue" <tainos at anguillanet.com>
  • Date: Sat, 2 Oct 2010 09:05:11 -0400

Last night at 2:00 AM, we had the heaviest rain I ever remember here – a rain rate of 5.94 in. per hour!  Luckily, it only lasted about 7 – 8 minutes, but gave us almost 1/2 in. of rain in that short time.  Light drizzle yesterday until mid afternoon, then a little very hazy sunshine.  Heavy overcast this AM with just a passing heavy downpour.  Looks like it will be like this for a few days, but nice and cool anyway.

Stay dry!

Good Afternoon Everyone from a rather autumnal North of England.  As there seems to be a momentary lull, I just thought I would report what my oldest friend (who is Bermudean and lives near Somerset Bridge) said about StormCarib.
I have been telling her to check the site for years and in typical Bermudean fashion she has paid no attention, however, while talking to her on the telephone on Sunday morning last while she was waiting for Igor she said;
"Boy those guys Dave and Gert know what they're talking about, I didn't even know Igor was around until I Iooked at Stormcarib and Dave said to get one's a** in gear (or words to that effect), it is the best site for hurricane information!"
You would have thought she was telling me about it!
Well done fellas.
Still keep watching to the East.

P.S.  My garage doors got blown out from the inside by Earl, as it came from the south blew through the fashion block wall and went with the doors.  I feel an expensive rolling garage door coming on!

- WAVES & IGOR

  • Date: Wed, 15 Sep 2010 12:43:58 -0400

As of noon today, the waves and swells from Igor here on the north shore of Anguilla are – well, spectacularly, un-spectacular.  Was going to take some pictures but not much to take pictures of – actually, a pretty calm day, with an occasional swell, but nothing out of the ordinary.  Maybe later today/early tomorrow, but I have a feeling it’s passing too far to the NE to really other us.  We’ll see.

- IGOR
  • By "Steve Donahue" <tainos at anguillanet.com>
  • Date: Mon, 13 Sep 2010 17:43:44 -0400

NHC has been forecasting for several days now a turn to the WNW then NW, but so far, this has not occurred.  For the past 36 hours, Igor has been traveling due west (270º) along 17.7ºN.  Just 24 hours ago, the NHC projected that by 5:00 PM today, Igor would already be at 18.1º - instead, it is still at 17.7ºN

However… everything still points to a NW track well to the north of Anguilla (about 460 miles), and there is nothing out there that indicates that this won’t be the case.  But, as always – you just never know.  Check the 5:00 and 11:00 AM forecast tomorrow to make sure Igor has actually started to make the WNW turn.

Finally, we should expect some rough surf on the north shore Tuesday from the E and NE– the 5:00 PM warning from the NHC follows:

SWELLS GENERATED BY IGOR WILL BEGIN AFFECTING THE LEEWARD ISLANDS ON TUESDAY. THESE SWELLS ARE LIKELY TO CAUSE LIFE-THREATENING SURF AND RIP CURRENT CONDITIONS.

(Note: Wave forecasts show these seas starting to arrive late Tuesday – right now, 10 – 12 ft..)

Just 24 hours ago, the NHC forecast position at 11:00 AM today called for Igor to be at 18.0ºN – instead, it is now at 17.5ºN.  All day yesterday, it pretty much stayed at 17.7º, but it in now traveling slightly S of due W (about 265º).  It’s a little concerning that the projected NW turn keeps moving further and further to the west. Though a couple of models are dropping the track a little further south (Canadian,CLP5 and BAMS), still looks like passing well to our north.  Just would feel better with a NW direction.

So for 18 hours now, Igor has been stuck on a heading of 270º at 17.7ºN, now with winds of 140 mph.  (Anguilla is at 18.17ºN.)  The NHC forecast at 5:00 AM this morning predicted that by 5:00 PM this afternoon, Igor would now be at 17.9ºN with winds of 75 knots! Like we all say – an inexact science.

Better start that turn soon!

Interesting to note that the 11:00 AM XTRP model for Igor (heading for the past 12 hours) shows Igor still heading due west – 270°  Sure hope the forecast turn to the NW happens soon – forecast to be Cat 4 by the time it’s north of us.

Below is the projected track/C.P.A. for Igor followed by the same info for Earl - both plots are 120 hours before reaching C.P.A.  With Earl everyone was feeling pretty safe with the storm passing 427 mi. to our north and 5 days away – turned out it passed just 39 miles to our north as Cat1/Cat2.  Like we always say – weather is an inexact science.  Keep a close watch – this is supposed to be a large, powerful storm!

- GASTON????
  • By "Steve Donahue" <tainos at anguillanet.com>
  • Date: Sun, 5 Sep 2010 10:15:58 -0400

OK, can somebody figure out what’s going on with Gaston?  The NHC says “probably”, but Gert and Weather Underground don’t even recognize it.  Fine – but then you read how Crown Weather interprets some of the models this AM:

… waffles back and forth between a weak area of low pressure and a significant hurricane in just 48 hours from now.

… continues to indicate significant strengthening and a track that would take this system across the northern Leeward Islands during Tuesday and to just south of Puerto Rico…

… forecasts a moderate tropical storm by Tuesday morning and a hurricane by Tuesday night.

… forecasts Ex-Gaston to become a moderate strength tropical storm by Tuesday, a hurricane by Wednesday and a major hurricane by Thursday.

So we go from “weak low pressure” to “major hurricane”.  Doesn’t look like much this morning, but you get a little uneasy with it sitting on your doorstep like that.

Cheers,

Dear All,
Being that I am in the north west of England I can't add much and I think Steve has been doing a stirling job.  From what the people at Island Harbour and Searocks tell me there hasn't been alot of structual damage but our carefully nurtured trees have taken a beating and electric was down, but the land lines have been working all the time (well done LIME), the worry is that apparently some of the poles along Long Pond Road were leaning and if they are weakened and Gaston arrives with any force they will probably go.  Sometimes two moderate storms one after another do more damage than one big one.  Anyway my best wishes to everyone and take care.

P.S. My neighbour on the Searocks says she will send me some photos of the area, I'll pass them on when I get them.

Winds (???) are clocking to the NNW, so guess that means that Fiona is close/passing.  Only problem is the winds are 0 – 3 MPH, with a gust to 12.  Not even cooling it off.  Light, misty rain (0.03 in) which is great for the foliage.  Fiona is going to pass 90+ miles to our NE in a few hours, but looks to be a major non-event.  But now we can start watching just formed TD 9 850 miles out east.  Be a few days before we know what’s happening.

Locally – ice is getting very hard to find.  Banks, gov’t and schools closed, no ATM’s or credit cards.  Went to 4 stations this AM – 3 closed, one had only 2 pumps working – 45 min. for 10 gals. for my generator.  No boats, ferries in The Cove.  Looks like all guests gone from Cap Juluca (backup generator went off this AM), but guests still at Viceroy – not accepting new reservations for a few days, but honoring all existing. Think both be fully operational weekend/next week.  Still hard to get to/from SXM – hit or miss.  Some reports of power back on in central AXA, but assume close to power station.  Last night, could see only few house lights on western half of island – no street lights.  Saw only 1 ANGLEC truck this morning, on coffee break.  No ANGLEC crews on West End.  I’m assuming (hoping) they are just waiting for Fiona passage.  Lots of LIME, cable work crews out.  LIME phone land line and internet has been 24/7 through everything- pretty amazing.  Lots of cell phone problems – pretty much down, but sporadic.

Probably nothing more unless TD develops.

Earl finally left us last night – up until then, we had gusty winds from the south and light rain.  The high winds from the SE quadrant that passed through late morning were gone by late afternoon.  Lots of branches down, few big old trees. Only saw 2 electric poles knocked down, but grocery, hardware stores packed.  Lot of people out.  Of the 10 or so commercial boats in Road Bay, all except 2 went on the beach – one sank on its mooring.  House on the side of the hill above Sandy Ground had most of the roof torn off, as well as Road School roof (partial).  Lots of beach erosion, but still plenty of good beach left – just some shifting around.  SXM airport is open and American flying in.  Saw Funtime Charters launching boats this AM, so might be ferry service today.  Gov’t offices, banks, stores all open as usual, but no credit card transactions.  Maybe get some welcome rain from Fiona to wash salt off trees.

2:15 PM – Monday

Back on line with gen power – battery pack &  laptop both went down.  So Earl was supposed to have gone by early morning and tht was it.  Didn’t happen.  Was a lot of wind during the night and especially this morning when my wind meter broke at 88 mph. with the wind from the west. Wind started to clock around to the SW and when it got south, it started REALLY blowing – I guess because of the SE quadrant.  I recall what 88 mph was like and these winds had to be over 100 mph.  They started about 11:30 or 12:00, and are just dying now – a little.  I know they were stronger because up until then, we just lost branches – at noon, we started losing trees and electric lines. It’s been raining for a good 3 – 4 hours now, about 1.5 in. so far.  The seas are unbelievable - the south shore will definitely get the worst of it.  Starting to die a little, but the past 3 hours were the worst.  Cheers, Steve

10:40 AM – Monday

The wind is pretty much out of the southwest now, and Earl has found some “new life”!  Winds are as strong as they have been – in fact, a little stronger.  Since the salt pond is not supposed to have breakers in it, I assume the sea has broken through to the salt pond between Cap Juluca and Altemar.  Battery pack keeps beeping, so assume it won’t last lng.  Still moderate rain, but no downpours.  Lots of broken limbs, no trees down I cab see,  Ooops – the rain just started in sheets – coming through all the cracks on the south side.  Towel time!  Later! - Steve

9:40 AM - Monday

Just walked out on front (east) deck, stuck my head around corner and was literally blown over.  Saw my kyack flying across the yard.  No poles down, lots of cable tv wires.  Caught a quick glimpse of the sea between Cap Juluca/Altamer – roughest I’ve seen.  Probably get worse with south wind.  Raining harder but now no rain gauge – except for wind speed/rain, others work.  Laptop battery dead, running modem/laptop off battery pack – see how long it holds. – Stay safe - Steve

9:00 AM Monday

No power since 3:30, on laptop/battery/backup.  Wind clocked around from north to west and is now starting to SW.  Windmeter broke at 88 mph.  Very little rain, lots of wind – I’m sure around 100.  Lots of smll tress down, wires all over road.  Goy a call from Barbados early am, are supposed to send chopper as soon as wind dies.  Hot inside, feels like tomb, DAMN noisy!  Less that 0.3 in rain.  More later.

More later.

Sort of a quite night, very little rain (0.14 since midnight), wind is DRAMATICALLY picking up – avg. 38, high gust, 54 MPH.  Still going to pass 30 miles north, but in just a few hours, not noon.  Wind is 105 when it passes.  Already trees down in the yard.  As soon as the winds clock around to the W, watch out – it’s then just to our north.  Running the gen set to get the fridge cold, but time to turn off.  Web site is updated with latest data. Stay safe.

Is now a cat 2 – 100mph, and has “jogged” closer to Anguilla – 30 miles, within the sector of hurricane force winds.  Should pass to our north late morning, at which time there will probably be strongest winds from the SW – S.  Got a wind gust of 34 mph at 10:15, but mostly in low 20’s out of the N-NE.  Band of rain came through about 10:00 (less than 0.1 inch), but nothing else.  Time to try to grab a little sleep.  Hunker down!

At least a little good news for us – Earl will arrive and depart in daylight hours.  Looking like cat 1 right now, but our north shore will really get battered with waves.  Right now, calm before the storm – hazy sun, very little breeze.  Hoping for normal flights in/out of St. Martin – wife comes in from MIA at 1:50.  Most boats are hauled but Funtime Charters is supposed to operate for afternoon flights.  Assume will be last flights for a while.  Stay safe!

Boats have either mostly been hauled out or are hightailing it south!  The sea all of a sudden got really rough on the north shore late today – probably due to a NE wind and effects from Danielle passing.  I’m hoping out friends in Barbuda will post updates as Earl passes because they will feel the effects about 9 hours before us.

This morning, people were busy hauling boats from the Cove and Sandy Ground (not a good sign).  We will definitely get some bad weather, just a question of how bad!  With the CPA at 69 miles, right now looks like strong TS force winds, some serious waves and a good bit of rain.  Let’s hope the NHC and models are correct this time re: Earls path.  But beautiful day diving this morning – bright blue sky, flat seas, gentle breeze.

- Summer Festival
  • By "Ann Phelan" <ann at bonairecaribbean.com>
  • Date: Fri, 6 Aug 2010 08:44:11 -0400

I am in AXA for the weekend’s tail end of Summer Festival. Mead’s Bay was the setting for Aug. Thur. boat races. The beach was rather quiet with about 100 people and maybe 10 stalls selling chicken in the blazing heat. Music pumped out of mega speakers and folks hid from the sun. I walked from Sirena to Malliouhana in about 20 min. and got a mild sun burn. The winds were light. I was at the event last year so did not shoot photos but it’s a lovely race.

Today the winds are a bit fresher. I am staying at Sirena soon to be called Anacaona Hotel. My room faces the lovely tranquil  blue. It’s magical. Last night I attended Mayoumba Culture night. Check out http://www.bonairecaribbean.com/blog_anguilla.html for details.

Today is the Parade of Troups in The Valley. Photos to come.

Cheers from sunny Anguilla.

Right now the boys in the boat race would like a little bit of Colin.  Gusts have been 5 knots, but steady only 2 or 3 - and for the past 10 min, - 0.  Sea looks like a millpond, and it’s hot and humid! Whatever Colin was supposed to deliver never happened!  Heat index was over 100 at times this afternoon.  Maybe something later. But this sure beats a TD or hurricane!

- WEATHER
  • By "Steve Donahue" <tainos at anguillanet.com>
  • Date: Tue, 3 Aug 2010 08:43:45 -0400

Starting about 1:30 this morning, lots of thunder, lightening, rain (0.77 in. so far) and wind (30 knots).  Still light to moderate rain and some distant rumbles of thunder, but satellite shows it should be out of here soon.  Looks like Colin is staying well to our north, but even if there is a major change in the track, the TS wind field is so small (30 miles), it would need to be a direct hit to amount to anything.

Well, the edge of the tropical wave to our east has just reached us.  Nice, sunny morning until 10:15 when a SERIOUS thunderstorm passed to our south over SXM.  Now at 11:00, the rain started here – but thunder is staying to our south.

Good news is, our good friends in SXM lent us a fire truck for the airport, so after 6 days, looks like Liat and American can fly in today.  We’ll see!

- SEA CONDITIONS
  • By "Steve Donahue" <tainos at anguillanet.com>
  • Date: Wed, 14 Jul 2010 16:44:51 -0400

Went diving this morning – sea temp at 60 – 70 ft. was 84° at one site, 85° at another.  But vis was maybe 20 – 25 feet because of serious algae bloom that’s been here for a week or so – worst I and others have ever seen.  Friend was fishing 35 miles north at Sombrero and had same green water there, and SST of 87°.  If any hurricane gets anywhere near us, it’ll love these warm seas – and the algae “soup” will just make it warmer!

A very Good Evening to everyone,
Hurricane season or not I am missing the Caribbean, my spies on the Searocks tell me that we have had very rough seas but not alot of rain, it hasn't been too hot either, however, my spy emailed me after a Sunday afternoon at Gwen's Reggae bar so I can't vouch 100% for the information!  A very dry last few months here in the north of England, we even have a hosepipe ban, but the last few days has had a couple of low pressure systems coming in from the Atlantic with some rain and alot of wind, gusts over 100MPH.
Any other divers among you please sign the petition on www.projectaware.org/givesharksachance we need all the signatures we can get.
Thankyou and Goodnight and a view from my bedroom window 5 minutes ago -red sky at night etc.,

Around 2 a dark ominous cloud passed over the island dousing rain on the east I am told but here on the west nada, just a light display and loud cracks of lightening. I went to Shoal Bay West for lunch at Trattoria Tremonte. It was much cooler than previously at Mead’s Bay. Now I am heading to Davida to hear Boss then Cote de Mere for dinner…everyone at the pool at Viceroy is sporting a mean looking sunburn…

My friend and I headed to Jacala for lunch. What a great spot. Around 1:30 the sky on the Atlantic side turned very dark and light rain showers commenced. It did not last long so I headed back to Mead’s Bay to swim and stand up paddle board. Tiny little fleas annoyed me all day..otherwise bliss in Anguilla.

So this morning about 6:30, it turned dark as night, the wind started howling (21 kn. steady, 39 kn. gusts), some thunder and lightening – and nothin’!  It was pouring out in the St. Martin – Anguilla channel, and we here in the course of ½ hour got 0.05 in. total.  So now we have a total of 9.7 in. ALL THIS YEAR – guess my cistern will never be filled.

To our friends to the west in the Virgins and Puerto Rico – don’t count on this system to fill your cisterns.  There has been a “blob” stretching a few hundred miles to our west, but no rain here.  We had a period of light showers mid-morning (about 0.3 in. total) and that’s been it!  Sun has been trying to break through for several hours this afternoon.  And do we need the rain!  We’ve had a whooping total of a little over 8 inches all year – on top of our driest year in memory last year (23 inches).  Maybe we’ll get some before it’s all out of here.

Good Evening Everyone,
I have been talking to my neighbours on The Searocks and they tell me Anguilla has been overcast, humid and hot with no rain, not good news for me as I know my cistern needs topping up.  Here in the English Lake District it has been very cold until the last few days and also exceedingly dry, I have been trying to plant a Black Pussy Willow tree that was given to me as a present and the ground is too hard.  I attach a photo of some of our trees with no leaves yet (mostly Ash trees) and we are nearly into June.  I do hope the hurricane season is kind to us this year but have my doubts, in the old days in St. Kitts they used to say 'June too soon, July stand by, August you must, September remember, October all over.'
My best to all,
JH
