- Volcanic ash
  • By Lou vin hassell <vin_lou at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Sun, 20 Dec 2009 19:15:55 +0100
Greetings all,
Just a short note,
Saba is experiencing volcanic ash along with the smell of the sulphur from the Island of Montserrat and the vis is -10 km.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the residents of Montserrat.
All said we do have calm winds from the South at this time and the ash has reduced the visibility.
Win Air is still flying into and out from Saba.
Best regards,
Vince

Good day all,

A total of 2 3/4 inches of rain fell at my location for the month of November.
H season has come and gone and praise God we have been spared once again from anything major/storm/ Hurricane.
Winds today r Easterly at 6 to 15 kts, swells are coming in from the North at about 1.8 meters but the open sea looks relativly calm, vis +10 km. The highest point in the Dutch kingdom has been mostly cloud free for a few days. Some of the Tourists made the trek to the top and had a wonderful time.
Hope this can be of help for those who need info.
Best regards
Vince

Good Day all,
Saba has been experiencing some moderate to heavy rainfall over the past 12 hours or so along with Thunder and lightening.
I saw a sight I have never seen in all my years on Saba, a speeding Garbage pail heading down the road towards the Cove Bay in a wall of run off water.
It is still raining at this time and the rumbles are still rumbling, winds are blowing from the South and South West at 8 to 15 kts with higher gusts in passing rain showers. The rain Gauge is showing 2. 3/4 " for the month of Nov so far.
The main road to the Harbor has a lot of debris from the hill sides and the Department of Public Works are busy with clean up.(the road is passable). All other roads are clear.
Run off mud can be seen in the surrounding sea shores.
Stay safe
Vince

Greetings all,
At last Saba has recieved some rain from Erika.
At my location I have measured a 1/2 inch yesterday, it is now overcast breezy and drizzling.
Some of the fishermen have brought their boats back over from SXM as well as a few dive operators.
The 2 systems west of Africa seem to be taking their WNW turn already which is good for the Caribbean Island chain.
We need to watch the other 3 that are about to exit the coast.
Win Air made a total of three flights yesterday 1 at 7:15 am and the other 2 later on through the day.
The highest wind gust recorde at Juancho Yrausquin Airport was yesterday 32 kts.
Hello to Joe, Linda, Alex, Sue, Pete and the rest of the crew,
Best regards
Vince

Winds N.N.E at 10 to 16 kts at this time
We have had a few light rain showers this morning, seas looking choppy.
Saba is still in need of rain as the cisterns are at an all time low in some areas we should hopefully get some much needed rain from E.

Stay safe

  • From: Lou vin hassell <vin_lou at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Tue, 18 Aug 2009 11:08:42 +0100
Greetings all,
Ana dropped about 1 1/4 inch of rain accompanied by a spectacular show of lightning.
No damages reported throughout the island apart from some com systems.
All boats were either lifted out at the harbor or took shelter on St Maarten.
Top winds during Ana's passage were estimated at 45 mph during thunder storms.
Due to the strong winds the cisterns were unable to catch much needed rain water.
Fort Bay harbor held up well, and all dive operators took the necesary  precautions.
Win Air resumed service at 13:30 pm on Monday.
Bill is gaining strength and on his predicated path should pass north of the island chain but should push up the swells somewhat if he continues to strengthen but do not let your guard down as some sytems have a mind of their own.

Hi,

Spoke to my family on Saba.

They experienced hard winds, thunder and lightning and lots of rain.
But because of the hard wind the cisterns hardly got any water.
They did not mention anything about damage or what so ever.
They watch closely what Bill is going to do.

Hello all,
Carnival went off without a hitch.
I have collected a total of 2 1/4 inches of rain at my location for the month of July.
The troups looked fantastic and the music was great.
We are in dire need of rain as the water trucks are in abundance.
seas at this time look calm as the winds are ESE at 15KTS.
We are hoping for the best for MS. Mermaid as we love her posts and her humor.
Best regards to all,
Vince

Good day all,
Saba is once again going thru a dry spell with no significant precip to talk about this week.
Winds Easterly at about 10 kts, vis + 10 km, seas a few white caps can be seen here and there, the SCUBA diving should be great, highest point in the Dutch Kingdom, Mount Scenery, clear and great for hiking along with the many trails throughout the island.
Fort Bay repairs ongoing and should look great when finished.
Saba's Beach has arrived and should be around for awhile down at Well's Bay and also Cave of Rum Bay has a brown stretch of volcanic sand.
Carnival begins on the 27th July and ends on the 2nd August at midnight and beyond.
Best regards

- Brief thunder storm
  • From: Lou vin hassell <vin_lou at hotmail.com>

Hi all,
Saba has just experienced a 20 min Thunder Storm around 10:15 am this morning.
I checked the rain gauge and it shows a 1/2", lots of runoff water heading down the road to the grey water cisterns below and the sea.
Winds during the Thunder Storm were 10 mph gusting to about 20 mph it is still overcast and hazy, there were also a few brief showers during the night time hours with distant thunder. Skies are turning dark once again and as the sat looks we are hopefully in for more rain.
Winds presently E.S.E to S.S.E at 08 ti 15 mph.
Best regards
Vince
