- Cold.....and rains!

Well I keep reading all your reports and wondering if we are living in remotely the same region of the world!

This year so far it rained continously for almost 3 weeks in January(after 2 weeks the same in earlier December). We saw water laying where weve never seen it before and again the last few days it has rained almost continually for 4 days.
We have seen some of the lowest temps ever know here on our little peninsula (Samana)  and this morning it was 63f at 8.00am. Unknown previously in 5 years here by me! Yes in between we had some warm sultry days but even now with the sun finally showing through, my toes and fingers are cold!!

Are we just getting all the rain for all the islands?  We do not have a drought nor a risk of forest fires.

What a strange occurence that we should have so much  rain when most of you have had virtually none!

Anyway wish us warmer please cos we dont have the gear for cold weather and its bad for business!

Best wishes

Toni

It has a been long time since I posted due to such an unusually quiet hurricane season but now we have a much much bigger catastrophe on our hands. Here in our region of Samana almost as far  away as you can be  on one island, from Haiti, the suffering is truly being felt. We have many many Haitians living and working amongst us. They are DISTRAUGHT. The communications are a nightmare and with so many Haitians here our own networks have been stretched to capacity these last few days. We all know somebody directly affected and of course the most overwhelming feeling  that it so easily could of been us.
Our hearts and minds are with our Haitian friends and we are doing what we can whether moral support, access to computers, Skype and of course we are in a position to make practical donations. Buying tetra paks of milk, unperishable foods, nappies ect which we are coordinating with humanitarian groups in Santo Domingo for quick transportation. Tonight we have our resident local rock band and singers performing a charity concert.  Its not a great deal  in light of such an enormous disaster but if we help a few families it will be something. The larger funds are for later,  right now, today,  they need food,  water  and medicines  and we are near enough to do something quickly.  All of us  in the Caribbean communities need to unite and show our dear neighbours that we do care.
Haiti we are with you in our thought our hearts and our minds, god bless you all.

Hello all,

Here in the DR we were more affraid than anything else, the earthquake was felt in the city but not with no other consencuences other than a big scare and more so with the tsunami warning..

Now that we are feeling mostly safe, i am just very sad because of what is happening to the haitian brothers and sisters, i have lots of haitian friends and it almost brings tears to my eyes to see the dispair and helpless feeling i seein their faces for the fact of not knowing for certain what happened to their families and expecting the worse...as it is not easy living in haiti and now this catastrophic earthquake  its them to makes all matters just beyond unbearable..it is one think to watch from a distance and another living the nightmare those poor people are going through.

Let´s lend a helping hand from where ever we are , doesn´t matter how small, it will still help..when you have nothing anything is very welcome..

With the damage to roads and bridges and the airport control tower, to say nothing of the loss of life of so many UN and UNICEF staff, contact with Haiti is almost non-existant at the moment with no telephones and no power.  I am sure the aid agencies will all be seeking extra funds.  I have attached a list of possible recipients should anyone wish to help - my personal favourite is the Red Cross.  A Haitian doctor who works here in the Dominican Republic will be leaving for Port-au-Prince shortly with clothes and medicines and we hope he can get through.

Hello from Punta Cana.

Firstly, our support for our neighbours is in full force. As this area
employees a good number of Haitians, most resorts and businesses fully
understand that for many here, family and friends back home are their first
concern.

Locally no effects whatsoever were experienced here in the east. In fact I
was enjoying a beer on the beach and felt absolutely nothing. Not even the
birds took to flight, no dogs running crazy...nothing. It was only on
turning on the TV an hour later that I knew of anything happening.

The wuake in Haiti was felt here in Santo Domingo as a not too strong tremor, I was home ( a 7th storie apartment) reading and it was not too bad. No damages have been reported so far in the city. Still do not have reports of cities near the haitian border......our prayers are with them.

Greetings everybody,

As some of you may know, I live in National District in Dominican Republic. If you switch to your favorite news channel, you may see that there was a major earthquake just southwest of Carrefour in Haiti, my thoughts and prayers for the people of our neighbor country.

I have seen spectacular images showing the magnitude of the damage, but just like most of you, I am suffering of lack of information, moments after the quake, the communication got very complicated over here in D.R., lines got very saturated and general reaction of Dominicans was of panic. Many tall buildings were evacuated, some office buildings like Piantini tower were evacuated on the emergency and Acropolis Center, another tall office building was evacuated and firefighters were there apparently responding an emergency call, but the good news is that so far, no structure collapse or casualty has being reported on this side of Hispaniola.

I was in my vehicle at 5:55pm local time when the quake occurred, close to home, casually stopped on a red traffic light and I could feel my vehicle moving side to side, not rough, but strong enough to get my attention and attributed that to the wind, sometimes if you are stopped on traffic and you are struck by crosswinds, you feel you vehicle to move side to side. When I arrived at my building, my family in the 8th floor told me about the earthquake and they all felt it and objects move a little bit, that was when I shocked and immediately put the news.

The population in the boarder of the D.R. side is relatively low, big cities and major population area in D.R. are in the North coast, center, southeast and east of the country. The quake felt here as a mag. 4.0 in Santo Domingo, so thankfully no major quake for us, for north region was a little bit stronger, like 4.5 to 4.8 according to reports from people in those areas, around Santiago Rodriguez.

The Metro services in Santo Domingo were stopped until tomorrow morning, classes were suspended in some provinces to let authorities inspect for possible damages.

Right now is dark in Port-au-prince, many international correspondent will be arriving to this island, some will arrive in Haiti, others will arrive thru Las Americas Intl (3.5 to 4 hours trip from Santo Domingo to the boarder via Jimaní, Independence province), and we all are hoping for more info, because if you switch to CNN or CNN en Español, all the info you get is from social networks and some phone calls, but not live coverage, some local correspondent are having issues to communicate to our local news centers due congestion in mobile networks.

Local authorities are in high alert and briefing thru the Emergency Operation Center (COE), who issued tsunami warning for southcoast, which was lifted an hour later.

For now on, our focus will be on Haiti, what scares me is that there are reports of major devastation but no live coverage, just photos, and that makes me anxious,

Stay tuned...

They have just had an earthquake in the SW corner of Haiti near Port-au-Prince of magnitude 7.  Reports of a hospital collapsed and there will be other damage.  We felt it here as about magnitude 4.  There is a tsunami watch out for the caribbean at the moment.  Our hearts go out to all in Haiti who really don't need more misfortunes especially after the weeks of rain we have all had.

Good morning and happy new year.

It has caught my attention all these chilly days we have being experiencing,
which is nice, my weather station registered last night (transition to Jan 7th)
20.5 C, that should be the coldest day so far this season, but not record low,
just slightly below 22 min. average.

Since I work in the field, I had a hard time yesterday morning, it was windy
and party cloudy, I was not wearing jackets or sweater, but my hands were cold,
I know for any living above the sub tropic this is hot, but for us who are used
to hot and humid days is not.

Also, no rain at all in Santo Domingo, just some drizzles, these months are
typically drier than summer.

Stay tuned...

Good morning!

These days nothing big happening except for this uncomfortable heat that is
nearly melting us all. One only wish to stay inside A/C enabled spaces and
particularly for me that I work in the field is hard to get. At least our
office has an air cond. unit. Yesterday was very hot and I spent most of the
time inside the office doing paperwork.

At midnight the heat sensation was 30.5 degrees, so certainly was a hot night
and add the electricity issues that this country is still carrying nowadays
(inefficient and expensive).

Today it seems to be going end the same, is 11am and already over 33, the
afternoon tends to be hotter.

That's it, stay tuned...

Over the last 24 hours we have had line squalls here on the north coast that feel like feeder bands from Bill.  Much more than we ever got from Ana - so glad he is going away!!  Good luck to everyone north of us (assuming he doesn't do a u-turn!!)

Good morning,

Ana died in front of our coasts, but outer bands left heavy rains between 12
and 1pm and some more at 3pm, but nothing more.

The National Weather Office lifted tropical storm warnings, but is keeping
flood warnings across several provinces.

The last tropical wave that crossed Hispaniola on Wednesday if I remember, left
more rains than this agonizing Ana, and about Bill, it seems it will track away
from us, which is good but nature is nature and man can't control it nor
predict it.

Good night and stay tuned...

Good morning,

We are preparing for the storm here and hope to be able to post without interruption thanks to a new generator and redundant internet connections.

The current conditions would lead most to believe it's a great beach day.  The Eastern portion of the sky is gray off in the distance, but overhead here it's sunny and the conditions are beautiful.

I'm reporting from the Western most point of the city of Santo Domingo at the ocean.  Here are the conditions:

Scattered cumulous at 2,000 - towering cumulous off to the East

Temp: 85F,  Visibility 8 miles

Pressure is steady at 29.95 and the winds are out of the NE at 10 MPH

I will post another report as soon as conditions begin to deteriorate.

Good morning,

Good news, Ana is forecasted to stay weak as it passes over Hispaniola. All spaghetti models track this system over the country and our neighbors (Haiti), when it passes over us, it will encounter important mountains system and is going to keep it from regain strength. The rain is going to be the main issue as the land is saturated with recent rains. Winds is not going to be damaging but expect few trees down.

Good evening,

The National Weather Office (ONAMET in Spanish) in conjunction with Emergency Operation Centre (COE) issued Tropical Storm Watch in all Caribbean Coast (From Cabo Engaño to Cabo Beata), that includes some popular destination like Punta Cana.

Ana, now a TD, is expected to regain strength becoming again a TS when it enters into the Caribbean sea. It is expected 50 to 100 mm of rain, and the land is already saturated due to recent pass of tropical waves.

COE said it has contingency plans ready to activate depending on Ana's behavior.

IMO, rain will be the main issue over here, if you don't care spending a couple of days with rain, then you are welcome :)

Bill is another concern, but even farther than Ana, and I am just raising my antennas, I will watch this one too.

Currently, isolated rains, not much to tell, few days ago we had a lot of rain due to a Tropical Wave, quite afternoon with persistent heavy rains.

I've been off the radar since the last wave passed through.  It took our power plant out of service and it's been quite a task getting it back up.  If you're not familiar with the DR, we are getting about 10 hours of electric a day here.

The sky is clear, some very scatterd Cirrus way up there.  Winds are light and variable and the temp is 74F, visibility is about 8 miles.  Barometer is out of service here, but the airport is indicating 30.00 steady.

We had some spuratic heavy rain today, not lasting more than 10 minutes, with overcasrt most of the afternoon; I don't wake up until Noon, so you won't get many morning reports out of me.

Good afternoon,

It's 3:00 pm and the temperature is high, the sahara dust and the absence of
rain and fronts or waves is shooting the UV index and the heat sensation at the
extremes.

With only 10 or 15 minutes at direct sunlight you might get sunburns so
sunscreen is highly recommended.

Since I work in the field, the wooden office I use to do some paperwork and any
administrative stuff here at the construction site is like and oven (we are
expecting an AC unit soon), at least I am drinking good amounts of liquids.

Just can't wait to go to my house and turn on the AC and take a cold shower.

- Isolated T-Storms

Good afternoon,

Something interesting to tell today, earlier (just an hour and half ago) I was in Santo Domingo Norte (north of Distrito Nacional), that is just around 15 km north from the capital, when I was getting ready to hit the road to have lunch at home, just before that we got struck by severe rain, thunders and rain, the thing was amazing, the rain was soaking, it looked dark, like 7:00PM and very cool temperature, but when taking the south turn, in Hermanas Mirabal avenue, and crossed the bridge that separates Santo Domingo North from Distrito Nacional, the weather was improving, at a point where it was sunny and hot.... now that's the kind of thing that is happening very frequently, this time due to the remnants of a tropical wave located over Cuba.

That is isolated weather, Santo Domingo North lacks of the tall buildings that Distrito Nacional has, you can see very well the horizon and the bad weather comes and goes, in small cells and they are more frequent around the city and not in the city, you can call that "rain in the vicinity" when talking about the weather of Santo Domingo city (the capital of Distrito Nacional and Dominican Republic).

Things like this get my attention and that is why I like to watch for the weather as one of my hobbies.

Also watching invest 97, seems like it will be no danger but could leave us some rain.

Stay tuned...

- Tropical wave approaching
  • From: "Guillermo A. Serra" <gaquiles at gmail.com>
  • Date: Sun, 19 Jul 2009 10:56:39 -0400
Good morning!

Is a hot a party cloudy morning over Santo Domingo city, current temperature around 30s. There are few things to watch that are approaching to the Caribbean, the first is a tropical wave that is located over Puerto Rico and might leave some rain for us from this afternoon, the second is a potential tropical system that despite having unfavorable conditions to develop, it's still a bit far from us to say we will be save, however chances are very low to take a hit if further development happens, as it is now, it would be just heavy showers with some wind, that could be refreshing for these hot days.

Stay tuned...

- Gale, my first encounter in this day
  • From: "Guillermo A. Serra" <gaquiles at gmail.com>

Good morning,

I don't know the correct word for "ventarrón" but the translation tells me it is "gale". The thing is I woke up earlier than my alarm clock (at 5:30AM) impressed by heavy showers slamming into my closed window and upstairs in the terrace I heard like if someone was pulling a table and throwing things away, it was very noisy in the end.

I jumped out of the bed ran upstairs to encounter one of our umbrellas tear down in three pieces, the other was open and I rushed to close it while getting wet in my pajamas, the water was pouring in thru some open spots, the cats were mewing high, poor little ones, some lighting... such and entertaining early start of the day, hahaha.

Right now still raining but the wing is gone, a satellite image tells me something like a tropical wave over the southeast portion of the homeland, including the Santo Domingo and Distrito Nacional.

I attached one picture of the current conditions, enjoy.

Good morning,

It's being a while since my last post, but nothing important to report, after a
rainy May, June was mainly hot with scattered t-storms, same start for July,
but yesterday we got hit by a tropical wave that has dropped temps just a
little bit, while maintaining skies over casted.

Last Sunday we got some heavy downpours, specially during early AM hours of
Monday, with some spectacular lighting show.

Currently, cloudy, cool temps, expecting more rain, although scattered.

- Weather conditions are better, but is sticky hot
  • From: "Guillermo A. Serra" <gaquiles at gmail.com>

Good morning.

Since 1.5 days ago, the weather over Santo Domingo is better, I mean no showers. Party cloudy skies, but the humidity combined with high temperatures is making the ambient uncountably sticky and hot, which is not good if you go to the streets dressed for work. Water vapor is high in the area. The skies are hazy, with few clouds. Conditions for this weekend are expected to stay the same, high temperatures will remain.

So the time is great for outdoor activities, ONAMET has lifted all the warnings so we finally have a break after a rainy and wet month of May.

- Soaking rain
  • From: "Guillermo A. Serra" <gaquiles at gmail.com>

Good evening,

Today was very wet, at around 11:30AM - 12:30PM we had heavy downpours with some wind gusts, the scene was amazing, I took some pictures to upload here but the quality is poor because it was with my cell phone so I am not uploading them. We had a break for 3 hours with sunshine, but again at around 4:00PM the rain came back, this time was not heavy, but it was consistent and it lasted until 6:30PM and that is a lot over here because rain usually is not that persistent and continuous with such strength that it had.

There is a broad area of bad weather covering the whole island of Hispaniola (La Española is Spanish). ONAMET is keeping its Alerts and Warnings for several areas, specially those in north region and the Coordillera Central.

- Conditions in Santo Domingo
  • From: "Guillermo A. Serra" <gaquiles at gmail.com>

Good afternoon,

The whole morning we had party cloudy skies, with few drops but that's just it. Now the conditions are slowly deteriorating with scattered t-storms for the rest of the afternoon. I didn't mention on my last post that ONAMET issued flash flood warnings for several provinces, specially for those in the north region of our homeland.

Dominicans should take precaution as the soil is already saturated and mudslides could occur.

There is a tropical disturbance affecting La Española.
