Today is Queen’s Birthday in the Netherland Antilles and Holland for that matter. The party started in town last night when a group from Curacao hit the stage. My house, 6 miles away pounded until 4:06 AM. Today is Dia de Rincon, a local cultural event in our oldest town Rincon. There is music, food and dance. Folks from the ABC islands, Holland and beyond come in for this huge festival.

 

The day is sunny and somewhat hazy. There is a light wind. The limbi limbi’s are out in full force (tiny little flies that love to go up your nose and in your mouth)…

The wind has shut off..www.windguru.cz predicts rain over Easter. I spoke with a local meteorologist who concurs based on the models he is watching. I have a funny feeling we are going to have a crazy rainy summer..let’s wait and see.

 

In  our infrastructure I am impressed by our marine park STINAPA.  Our coastline is pristine, we have a healthy reef in most regards, permanent moorings and more. Another aspect of our infrastructure is SELIBON our waste and removal division. What a group. When we have a parade by 7 AM our streets are clean. The trash removal teams are friendly and efficient. Our island is spotless.

 

 

Well WEB, Water Electric Bonaire is changing water pipes in and around Belnem. It’s long overdue. As a result we will not have water Saturdays for several months from 8-5 PM. Fill up your buckets…I did not know last Sat. and suffered all day..

It’s a dust bowl here..the winds are 27 knots plus. Since we have not had substantial rain since last year Oct. the entire landscape is a dust cloud. I hate to open windows as it means a dirty house but…

It’s about 83 f and the sky is grey not a spot of sun…the winds are picking up…week’s end promises to be a high wind explosion. All my fellow windsurfers are on edge anticipating the high winds and waves. Tonight many of us head to Paradise Moon for St. Patrick’s Day. There is a rumor there is no Guinness on island..well, one can get it at one of the many local Chinese stores..

I woke to a tap tap on my east window…droplets of rain that lasted a second or two..such frustration..we desperately need rain. I have buckets out for the donkeys…water out for the birds…

 

The air was humid as I watered the plants at 7 AM.

 

A quick look at www.windguru.cz revealed some major wind and waves head our way starting tomorrow. Time to dust off my 4.2 meter sail.

Where is the rain? I would call this situation a for sure drought..I am not too happy having to use the government water for the plants. More so I worry about the goats and donkey and feral dogs and cats. Awell, nature has it’s way of creating balance.

 

My lovely daughter is in Antigua with family. She says there is no wind and it’s hot. She spent the day at Half Moon Bay yesterday and the day before at her favorite beach, Darkwood. Carnival is over. There has been a terrible rash of break ins island wide. It’s not nice for our tourists and it’s harder on residents. I am hoping this really negative cycle ends soon.

 

Planning my next Caribbean jaunt to Saba and Anguilla for June. This will be my 3^rd trip to Anguilla. Any tips for Saba are most appreciated. I am going to hike and chill.

Yesterday was election day. Final word is not in but I have heard rumors the Green Party has won. If so our status with Holland as voted a few years back (direct ties) remains the same if I get this whole situation.  See http://www.thedailyherald.com/news/daily/m209/editm209.html for a little blurb.

 

On a happy note, windsurfing is big business for our island and El Nino is NOT impacting our winds. In fact, there were some periods of 27 knots this week. My clients are crying tears of joys. The shops are passing out 5.0 meter sails to the guys and the lighter sailors are vying for the 3.5 and 4.0 meters. This is happy news.

 

No rain..the rainy season is a dud.

 

Hope for Haiti was amazing. JayZ, Bono, Edge and Rhianna’s song was amazing..Kid Rock, Keith Urban and Sheryl Crowe  song was touching …overall it was a teary night. I am overwhelmed with deep emotion and whilst so much is being done, the need is staggering. I have donated to Yele, UNICEF and the Humane Society. Don’t forget the animals please…

This bulletin will be issued by the MDNA & A. when a Tsunami statement is received from the CTWC.

More or less at 22:03 hours local time, the Meteorological Service received an information statement on a strong earthquake that occurred over the Haiti Region.

The data received shows that near 21:53 hours local time there was an earthquake at a depth of 10 kilometers with a magnitude of 7.3 on the Richter Scale. The epicenter was near 18.5 degrees North and 72.5 degrees West, This is about 10 miles (16 kilometers) from Port-au Prince, the capital of Haiti.

According to the Tsunami Warning Center, based on these data there is a possibility of a local tsunami that could affect coasts located usually no more than hundred kilometers from the eartquake epicenter. Areas further from the epicenter could experience small sea level changes. The Tsunami Warning Center for the Caribbean Sea has issued a watch for a possible tsunami for Haiti, Cuba, Bahamas & Dominican Republic late tonight. Hence no threat is foreseen for the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba.

For the first winter I am using govt. water to water the garden. Usually rain water is high during this time of year but NADA since Oct. This is ridiculous. A healthy dose of wind is making the sailors happy. We have a strong contingent of windsurf pros in from Europe for the winter training for the Spring and Summer tour. They are having some good fun.  Cruise ship mayhem..not happy…

I had dinner with friends and was told Sabadeco (north of the island) has not seen rain since Oct. We have not had rain south here in Belnem since early Nov. Last night we had a spot of rain but nothing to speak to really. Our rainy season is simply not happening. Wind is light…Ocean Dream and the Freewinds are in port. Restaurants are packed…it’s a good season from all observations.

Today we have a little wind..un tiki bientu…the kiters are happy, windsurfers using 6.0+ meter sails are happy. Big fellows and high winds sailors as myself aren’t too happy. I will use the day to clean and run errands. Some crummy mega cruise ship is in port so I need to wait until they depart. Our tiny town becomes bedlam when the 3000+ passengers and 1000+ crew descend. Cruise ship tourism is very controversial here. For me I would welcome small boutique lines with client’s who embrace are splendid healthy reefs, are not seeking a duty free port but to enjoy our marine park, our windsurf beach or a lovely tour. In town last week we overheard 4 different passengers asking for a Loo. In Plazita Limina whilst enjoying lunch, cruise ship passengers came in to use the loo. Today was a windless day…one of the Princess mega liners came in at 11 so we had 2 nice hours at the beach before the masses descended. Tonight having Xmas Eve dinner with a friend and then perhaps sit outside and listen to the choir at the Baptist church…later a drink and wait for Santa to arrive..Sint Nicolaas came but I forgot to put out my shoe so nada pa mi….

 

My daughter is with me in Bonaire. It is a delight to share the holidays. We Skype Mom (86 years young) daily..she is in the cold tundra of Central MA with my family safe and warm.

Andy Brandt and the rest of the ABK Windsurf School arrived yesterday from the US and they brought MEGA wind. The Dec. clinic commences tomorrow. Lucky sailors will experience the wind so many speak of..Bonaire truly is windsurf paradise.

 

We had a lot of rain yesterday, thankfully, for the garden and critters.

 

I am in Cape Cod for a few days and head back to Bonaire soon….the cold here is horrendous.

Sint Nicolaas and Zwarte Piet (a scary fellow I must say) arrived by boat in Kralendijk Sat. I left before the mayhem but at 8 AM kids were strolling in town in anticipation. So cute. Warehouse Grocery has shoes all lined up along the freezer section filled with carrots and hay and treats for Sinta and the horses…aweee…

 

The island was fairly quiet for the US holiday Thanksgiving…Let’s hope the season is prosperous for all in our tourism sector.

Caesar Finies, Bonaire’s best light wind freestyler, lent me his 4.5 meter Neil Pryde sail to place in our expansive bay. It was averaging 16 knots with higher gusts. Today, it’s much lighter.

The day is perfect for work and errands. The sky is grey and the winds are light. We had a massive downpour around 9 AM. It filled my rain buckets again. Sad news from Bonaire. Two plane crashes in two weeks..this one a passenger plane enroute from Curacao. Reports indicate the pilot may have died. Tragic story..condolences to the family.

Am on Cape Cod for my Sept. sojourn. Weather is crisp and clear. GORGEOUS! My Bonaire pet sitter reports light winds, HOT HOT HOT and no rain. The Leewards Islands were fortunate to fill their cisterns. I am glad Erika was nice to the islands. Reports from friends in Antigua indicated school was closed during the rain. I remember that well when I used to live on island. It’s like a snow day in the Caribbean.
