- Roofs blown off, trees uprooted and powerlines downed in EasternJamaica,Center of Gustav moving across Jamaica
  • From: Blayz Brooks <blayzbrooks at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Thu, 28 Aug 2008 15:27:49 -0700 (PDT)

The National Hurricane Centre is reporting, the centre of Gustav has made landfall along the Eastern Tip of Jamaica (Morant Point)at 18oo UTC or 1pm local time. The met service of Jamaica is reporting the center has passed over Morant Point, the Norman Manley International Airport and is currently passing over St.Catherine .  Winds at the time were near hurricane force, but Gustav was not upgraded as the data was not convincing enough. Western Jamaica, not much activity with the exception of intermittent showers and occasional gust up to 30mph.Eastern Jamaica has been taken a battering. Persons are calling radio and television stations reporting roofs ripped off, downed powerlines, uprooted trees and storm surges. In fact, the Mancheneil Primary School, which was being used a shelter had its roof blown off and evacuees had to be moved. Some reported a sudden calm, so some persons are experiencing the “eye”.Persons are now steaming in to shelters.

The Nwa is reporting 16 reports of flooded and blocked roads.

The current track takes the center of Gustav right over Montego Bay in about 12 hours time. So I will be getting the worst of it.

So Far

lowest pressure reported

990mb as Gustav passed over the Norman Manley International Airport.

Highest winds

The wind is starting to blow hard and the rain is coming down fairly hard although Gus is still offshore and hasn't advanced much so I pray he doesn't linger here once landfall is made the way he did in Haiti.
Our pets are acting very nervous and clearly know there is danger lurking, it's amazing how intuitive they are(and funny how they are all stashing food)!!!
I will update for as long as we have internet, stay safe everyone!!!

Tracy

It seems we're working on a new tradition in Jamaica - a hurricane to close the
summer and kick off the school year. Well I, for one, object. I propose we
postpone the arrival of all storms and hurricanes at least until mid-term when
we all need a break anyway, but preferably indefinitely. It's really too much.
Here in Kingston, at about 800 feet above sea level at the foot of the first
row of mountains, the breeze is starting to blow with some consistency. It's
not a hard breeze yet, but it's enough to keep my wind chimes clanging gently,
persistently. The rain is falling softly - reminds me of Vancouver rain - and
the mantle of gray draped across the tops of the mountains to the east is
mystical... magical... eerie.

JPS announced about two hours ago that they are not planning to shut down the
power grid, so with any luck we'll be able to bring you regular updates. And
with a little more luck (and probably a little prayer wouldn't hurt) Gustav
will not linger and wreak too much havoc.

Your trusty reporter in Kingston,
Corinne

Just got word from JPS (our electrickery company) that as Gustav is forecast to become Cat 1 - they are not planning on shutting down the national grid unless it becomes necessary.

Also just got a call from our staff at the Montego Bay base that Sangster International Airport is closing at 2 PM this afternoon

Tis gusty, rough seas, bands of rain in Ochi at the moment. Sky is still fairly light, so all in all not too bad.

Latest advisory states that the eye is still 40 miles west of Kingston - that means another 8 hours until ????????
Phew, we were hoping we would have sent Gustav outta here by this evening, but he is showing all of us.

We have winds gusting approx 25mph here, haven't heard any reports of flooding yet, so not sure what the rain status is at the far eastern tip - hopefully all those folks in the flood prone areas have reached shelters by now.

Dogs must have exhausted themselves with their restless behaviour earlier and are now back in their normal comatose state, floors are covered in muddy footprints, so I have given up with the mop.

Had a small load of washing in the basket, so figured it was time to turn the place into Chinese Laundry. Good to know I haven't lost my touch over the past 12 months.

That 4 legged rodent is still inhabiting my house, caught a brief glimpse earlier, so the hunt is on, the eviction notice is written!!!!

Back home again - I was surprised at how many people are walking out and about on the roads. We will be in trouble if the rains decide to come in earnest.

Sitting in the living room watching the tremendous surf smashing against the rocks - the sky for the moment is quite light, winds are picking up and we are getting occasional showers, some strong, others just spritzes

Dogs are restless, this is not their first storm, so they are not afraid, I think the different pressure changes are bothering them, however the Mumma is not going to relent and let them on the bed!!!

More to come

Well now - just to add more to the madness, about half an hour ago, we heard a transformer explode on the Main Street, and sure nuff, the sirens followed not long after.
What we call "the bottom Mothers" (local hamburger etc shop) is on fire, due to an electrical problem which may or may not have caused the transformer to explode.
So, the Main Street is now blocked off.

I am at the Village making sure that all is okay - staff have done a wonderful job and they are all safely home with their families. The river is starting to rise so we must be getting some rains in the hills - the water coming out the mouth of the river is a muddy brown, which is not a good sign.

The cloud base is now down on the horizon and it is looking ominous out there, the sand on the beach is starting to disappear, it will deposit itself in the mouth of the river for a few days before coming back home.

heavy rain at the moment which is coming out of the south - at least for right now, that will soon change too.

it's to be hoped that the power stays on so we can keep getting updates -I shouldn't have said that as power just went off momentarily and came back on - this is indicative of losing electricity soon - well that's what good books are for

Will keep updating for as long as I have enough battery and dsl in the laptop

- Eastern Jamaica experiencing Tropical Storm Conditions.
  • From: Blayz Brooks <blayzbrooks at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Thu, 28 Aug 2008 08:34:41 -0700 (PDT)

Itʼs a hectic morning across Jamaica. Last night Jamaicans were told Tropical Storm Gustav would move over the water north of Jamaica, bringing a rainy day. This morning, Jamaicans are waking up to news that a Hurricane Warning is effect for Jamaica with the center of Tropical Gustav forecast to pass over or just south of the South Coast. This is causing some serious problems. Emergency management and the other agencies had focused their resources on Jamaicaʼs North Coast and now with the shift in track they are rushing to prepare the South Coast before Gustav strikes. Many persons along Jamaicaʼs South Coast thought it would be just a wet day, and started the day as normal. As a result reports are coming in from all over the place of people been in places they donʼt want to be with the approach of Gustav. In fact, the media is reporting persons stranded in Rocky Point. There are also reports of persons still on the Keys and Banks. Some say they are leaving as they believe nothing is coming. Hopefully, the Jamaica Defence Force can persuade them to leave.

The National Hurricane Center 11 am edt track the has Tropical Storm Gustav making landfall over Jamaica. This would make Tropical Storm Gustav the first tropical cyclone since Hurricane Gilbert of 1988.to make direct landfall over Jamaica. Hurricanes Dean, Ivan and Charley never made landfall since the eye stayed offshore.

Currently, 11:30edt.In Western Jamaica the weather is not bad. There are light showers in Montego Bay. Winds throughout the morning have been ene-e ranging from 15-20mph.Each time a squall moves through we see higher gust, but nothing near tropical storm force yet. Much of Eastern Jamaica is experiencing tropical storm conditions. Persons are calling in the radio stations from Eastern Jamaica reporting intense rainfall and strong winds. Thanks to technology you can hear what we are hearing in Jamaica. Below are the links to the Jamaicaʼs radio stations online providing comprehensive coverage.

- Rain is here

The rain has started to fall in Ochi, skies are black to the east and the temps have definitely dropped. Winds are kicking up in gusts and the mozzies are out in full force taking advantage of the situation.

Latest tracking is a shot in the dark!!!  Gustav is a budding teenager and we all know how they behave - Listen to nobody and do as they please.

We are concerned that we will have additional mud slides down into the town of Ocho Rios like we have earlier in the year. If we get the rainfall they are talking about, this is a very good possibility.

Maybe that is what it will take for the "powers that be" to sit up, take notice and stay in the area until the work is complete.

If any readers have friends or family here, email their information and I will attempt to contact them for you

All of neighbours need to watch what is happening in Jamaica with Gustav and prepare for not only the obvious, but also the ridiculously sublime

Stay safe everyone

Greetings all,

Well well well....it seems we have quite a weather day ahead of us...we here on the south thought we would have been spared the worse of this system but it seems as if Gustav had other plans. Here in Portmore it is overcast..with a little drizzle... people seem to finally be taking the threat seriously as the supermarkets are jam packed. I'm a bit concerned about the slow movement of Gustav as that would be conducive to flooding. I must say the the Government have made an ardent effort to clean most of the Island's most problematic drains so hopefully all fairs well. If I can be of assistance to anyone feel free to contact me. God bless.

Andre

7 AM Jamaica time - gusty winds, large chop on the ocean, very likkle rain at the moment

Who knows where Gustav is heading, the weather channel just said - Gustav has moved a little to the south and west, he is liable to go around in a circle and meet his own tail before this thing is over, that will confuse the whole lot of them and that clump of spaghetti that stuck together will win out.

Just spoke to a friend in Kingston - slight drizzle there, lot of thunder and lightning in the night. Her Daddy is in Montego Bay and he refuses to believe that Jamaica is going to be visited by Gustav - so we still have some who are not paying attention, not much we can say about that at this time.

I would rather take too many precautions and call it a drill, than the other alternative. I have made the decision to close the Village for the day, many of the staff members live in parts of St. Mary, which will get the rains before we do, so getting them home becomes a problem. It is better they stay home and take care of their families and their homes than worry about getting to work.

Will keep everyone updated as the day goes along.

After some scattered moderate to heavy showers overnight it is just lovely here in Kingston now: cloudy but nice and cool with a light breeze.
Could this be the proverbial "calm before the storm"...???

The experts dubbed Fay "The Joker" and Gustav is now "The Riddler" after his radical overnight course and center positional change:

Notice the spaghetti is all over the place again so I don't think anyone can estimate for sure where Gustav will head next, at what strength or even when but passing us to the South puts us on the bad side of any storm so keep an eye on the reports as they come in, be smart and stay safe.

Remember that even a TS can cause major loss of life and property and Gustav has proven to be unpredictable at best thus far...!!!

Morning all

well just a few hours sleep and the crashing of the waves on the rocks in front of the house woke up the place - dogs no longer comatose on the floor, doing their prancing dance all about the place which means - "get up NOW"

Shutters are closed so it's difficult to know what's up, still dark outside, some winds blowing, a likkle stronger than a nor-wester at the moment, but obviously going to get stronger. No rain, although we did have some spectacular lightning and thunder around mid-night which bought with it some heavy rain squalls.
Seems like Gustav has decided to come visit the "rock" - and although we are full of Jamaican Hospitality and love to welcome our visitors, we do make exceptions from time to time - and this is one of them !!

No rain in Ochi at the moment, dogs went outside to investigate and soon came back, of course they think it is time for food - HAH !, got news for them - too early

Hopefully everyone is alert on the rock, the shelters have opened up, so also hope that those who live in the flood prone areas are making their way now.

Will post again soon so long as the power stays on and the dsl still works

Stay Safe

10 PM Jamaica time and the thunder is beginning to roll in the distance - I went outside to see why it is so dark only to find that there are no longer any stars visible.
It's a little breezy and I can hear waves thudding against the rocks in front of the house.

It is terribly hot and humid, the fans aren't cutting it and it certainly isn't any cooler outside. Cool showers last for about 2 minutes, so we are certainly going to welcome Gustav clearing out of our area. The heat has been building since Monday and enough is enough now.

The forecasters really seem to be at a loss with this one and who can blame them as Gustav has a mind of his own and appears that he is going to defy all the odds.

The real concern has got to be all our friends to the west, Cayman, Cozumel and of course all the Gulf States. All of them are going through the waiting stage which is the hardest time.
We will certainly be lighting plenty of candles for all of them.

We are still very much on the alert in Ochi and I understand Sangster International Airport called an emergency meeting with all personnel today to discuss procedures. We too are in the waiting stage and by morning we should have a better idea of what Gustav has in mind for us.

The 2 big mutts are comatose on the floor sucking the cool out of the tiles. The only thoughts in their heads are making sure they complete their required 20 hours of nap tie for the day and What's for breakfast. No stress from them.

Stay alert everyone and please stay safe

One Love from the Rock

- glorious morning

It is a picture perfect morning on our piece of the Rock - much to our surprise.

After much studying and analysing and listening and watching every weather expert, site, channel etc until late last night, we were in information overload so decided sleep was the best thing, knowing that the rains would be on our doorstep by early morning and we would have a better idea how Gustav was going to treat us - were we wrong or what !!

So ya all know that all that energy was swept out with the dust this morning and we are now on Plan ????, and that's exactly what it is ????. Personally I am concerned as this one is not behaving at all - just like a naughty child, he is going to do exactly what he wants and in his own good time, and for those of us who are parents, that can lead to bad t'ings happening. SO, we need to be very careful and keep well informed. Don't let this beautiful morning fool us and make us let our guards down. This is the kind of weather that makes people complacent, those are usually the very same ones who after the fact will blame all and sundry for not keeping them informed!!! Go figure

Anyway folks, enjoy the beautiful morning that the big man upstairs has blessed us with, but be very prepared for what may be (at this point in time) creeping down the strait.

More later

Not to be an alarmist but ... Crap ...

There is no way to warn those in the Northern Lesser Antilles of what is happening ... The Titanic Low recently below Bermuda has crashed and smashed South into Puerto Rico and the Northern Lessor Antilles, this is no small event!

This is a hunk of major cyclonic activity that drags in serious convection that make Invest 95 look like a tennis ball .. GRRR

This is an upper level Low that has significant impact on not just the Eastern Caribbean but also, Gustov? All bets are off as to what is going where for the next 24 hours except, Gustov will try to move West, and probably South,  in resistance to this huge upper Low?

When, and until we know what is going on with this rouge system, no spaghetti for Gustav counts! NONE!

No models, no spaghetti, nothing has anticipated this. The results, from what I can see, Gustov, will definitely drop to the South more, what was I-95 to the Northeast of the Lessor Antilles will join up with this Titanic Low that has decided to drop South or totally be engulfed in it!

I only issue this now, in brief because it is a significant unexpected event and from what I can see, no one, NHC, NWS, or the infamous Weather Channel is looking... Dang!!!!! No, double Dang!!

One picture, one link or loop: West Atlantic!

Well if anyone is ready for a sauna - "come on down to Ocho Rios" as we are able to provide all the necessities of a sauna without you having to sit in a likkle box.

It is HOT outside, still, humid, hot, humid and did I mention HOT

The little rains we had along with the winds this morning have disappeared. The seas is still a likkle choppy and we are getting an occasional rustle in the trees. Sky is blue with some wispy clouds that don't seem to be going anywhere.

There are many folks who feel that Gustav is going to pass us by, the heat that we are experiencing is very unsettling, so I think we need to pay very close attention.

There is not a lot of information coming out and I believe it is because no-one is really sure what is going to happen, so be prepared for the worst, pray for the best and throw a party when it is all over

Take Care

  • Date: 26 Aug 2008 16:19:19 -0000
Hurricane Watch issued for Jamaica August 26, 2008, 1100 hrs (11:00 a.m.) EDT

ADVISORY # 1

The Event: At 0800hrs EDT (8:00 a.m.) EDT, the center of Hurricane Gustav was
located near latitude 17.5 N North and longitude 72.0 West, or about about 75
miles (or 120 km) South-Southeast of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and about 265 miles
(or 424 km) Southeast of Guantanamo, Cuba.

The Prognosis: Gustav is a Category One hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale.
Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 25 miles (or 35 km) from the center,
and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 70 miles (or 110 km).

Gustav is moving toward the Northwest near 9 mph (or 15 km/hr), and this motion
is expected to continue today with a turn toward the West-Northwest and a
decrease in forward speed forecast on Wednesday. The hurricane could become a
Category Two hurricane before making landfall in Haiti later today.

Gustav is expected to produce total rainfall accumulations of 4 to 7 inches
over Jamaica, with isolated maximum amounts of up to 15 inches possible. These
rains may produce life-threatening flash floods and mud slides. Coastal storm
surge flooding of 2 to 4 feet above normal tide levels can be expected near and
to the East of where the center makes landfall.

National Response: Jamaica

- Evacuate the Keys and Banks immediately
  • From: Blayz Brooks <blayzbrooks at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Tue, 26 Aug 2008 08:56:01 -0700 (PDT)

It is a mostly cloudy morning in Montego Bay, Jamaica. There are a lot of high level clouds around compliments of Hurricane Gustav.I woke up this morning to knocking and sawing .It seems some people in the neighbourhood are preparing for Hurricane  Gustav. Last night, the Meteorological Service issued a Hurricane Watch and ordered the immediate evacuation of the keys and banks. This frightened some people and sent them into preparation mode. In Montego Bay, the older people will tell you about Hurricane Allen of 1980.Most hurricanes move south of Jamaica, meaning  the North Coast donʼt normally get storm surges, but Allen, like Gustav is forecast, moved through the Windward Passage and very close to Jamaica. The results were extensive damage, eight persons killed and a reported 12 feet storm surge in the Montego Bay area.

The various model guidance have shifted south and the latest National Hurricane Centre forecast now puts Hurricane Gustav 80miles away from the North Coast. The track no longer has Gustav moving over Cuba, but in the Windward Passage. Hurricane Gustav will eventually make it into a Category Five Hurricane. The current track puts the north coast in 34kt(40mph)wind range, so heavy  rain and battering waves are the main threat for us. The track could shift again, so monitor the releases issued by the NMS of Jamaica.

Morning to all

When I got up in the pre daylight hours this morning, I watched the light skies appear with some sunlight, sea was blue and very flat. There was absolutely no wind.

How quickly things change - it is 8 am in Ocho, the sky is very overcast, sea is grey and getting choppy, leaves are rustling on the trees and occasional likkle gusts pop up. Had to turn the lights on as the daylight is limited - Oh how JPSCO will love that, ratchet up those already exorbitant electricity bills.

I knew t'ings were not going to be good when I spied a 4 legged rodent with a long tail in MY house - can't understand why these critters do not get my lingo that they are not welcome within my exterior walls under any circumstances - especially those ones. So ya know all the stops have been pulled out and the sucker will be outta here in record time.
Tis my house and I a'int moving out!!!!

Anyway, back to the wedda - Gustav has popped up so quickly and of course Jamaica is still celebrating Olympic Gold, that I fear many folks are not paying attention to this one - the sneaky suckers are the ones we really have to watch as they are like the 4 legged rodent and sneak in the back door.

reports are conflicting as to the path Gustav will travel, so best for all of us to take Max's approach, boil up a pot of spaghetti, throw it at a tracking map and watch all the strings - fellow Gus could go anywhere and the ocean temps are right for it

Heli's will be put away to bed in their respective hangars about the island and we hope for the best - once all precautions are taken, that's all we can do

Stay very safe all those who may or will be in Gustav's path - this is not one to be messed with

- Tropical Storm Gustav.
  • From: Blayz Brooks <blayzbrooks at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Mon, 25 Aug 2008 17:56:08 -0700 (PDT)

There are no significant clouds in Montego Bay, Jamaica ending a bright, sunny day.The local news is swarming with news of Gustav so many persons are aware of the situation. Meanwhile, local officals have been meeting to discuss the situation.

The strong tropical wave and associated low pressure which has been moving through the Central Caribbean Sea, has been upgraded by the National Hurricane Centre to Tropical Storm Gustav. Gustav is the seventh tropical storm of the 2008 Atlantic season.

This morning, satellite and microwave imagery revealed well defined bands and an eye-like feature. A quikscat pass (a satellite that collects wind speed and direction over the water) indicated a surface circulation was present and what was 94L was upgraded to Tropical Depression Seven. Two hours later, when the Hurricane Hunter flew into T.D 7, they found tropical storm force winds mostly southeast of the centre, with top winds near 60mph and Gustav was born. The model guidance are all over the place on Gustav. Most  the more reliable model guidance take Gustav across Haiti and Cuba, while other  take Gustav in the Jamaica- Cayman- Windward passage  area and even into Belize. This goes to show Jamaicans should keenly monitor Gustav, as the track can still change. The official track takes Tropical Storm Gustav across the Barahona peninsula, near the Aquin- Anse-a-Veau area as a category one hurricane on Tuesday around 2pm est.The Barahona peninsula is quite narrow and not much weakening is anticipated before Gustav makes a second landfall near Guantanamo as a category one hurricane. It would then  spend four days travelling across Eastern,Central and Western Cuba.

Jamaica can expect rainy weather Tuesday Night into Wednesday night with gusts up to gale force along the North Coast.

Okay folks

The fun and celebrating are over, time to get your heads up and pay attention to what is happening close to our east.
Met office is telling us that we can expect heavy rains, flooding in the flood prone areas and gusty to gale force winds at times over the next few days.

It is a glorious morning in Ochi, calm, sunny, blue skies, flat seas and very warm. We went swimming yesterday afternoon, it was like taking a tepid bath in the humungous bath tub in our front yard, hubby pipes up " this feels like a hurricane magnet"

Well, washing is all done, supplies are in place, t'ings are in order, so let the rains come. we need steady soaking rain, not torrential PLEASE
Keep a watch on the weather over the next few hours, hurricane hunters are heading into Invest 94 later today, so we will have updates.

Don't take this one lightly, remember Fay!!

- Local officals monitoring invest 94L
  • From: Blayz Brooks <blayzbrooks at yahoo.com>
  • Date: Sat, 23 Aug 2008 20:54:53 -0700 (PDT)

Local officials are closely monitoring a strong tropical wave currently passing over the Southern Windward Islands. The system (94L) has already produced between 20-50mm of rainfall and 40 mph gusts in the area. There are indications that a surface circulation is developing and a tropical depression could form tomorrow or Monday. The environment ahead of 94L looks very favorable for development. In fact, some of the intensity guidance brings it to hurricane status by Tuesday night. Jamaicans should really monitor this system as most of the model guidance are clustered over or south of the island. Earlier, there were more spread among the models ,with some leaning more to Hispaniola, but with each run they seem to be trending more to the Jamaica area. Another system (95L) also has the potential to develop into a hurricane, but is no threat to the Caribbean.

For  sure …

Squally weather will to continue tonight into tomorrow for Windward Islands.

The tropical wave (94L) will move into a more favorable environment over the next couple of days.

There is model support for development.

Heavy rain will likely occur on Wednesday, when the system moves into the Jamaica area.

Residents and interests in Jamaica, Cayman, Haiti, Cuba, Southern Bahamas, and the Dominican Republic should closely monitor this system by listening to your local media, emergency management, weather office and www.nhc.noaa.gov/index.shtml

Uncertain ….

Invest 94 developing into a hurricane.

Wild celebrations in Jamaica as Usain Bolt strikes gold

The streets around Half Way Tree are always busy - it is one of the main roads running through Kingston and is home to the city's main bus terminal.

It is dominated by an old clock tower but on Wednesday, two giant screens were the centre of attention.

The streets came to a standstill as the public spilled out of nearby offices, shops and buses to watch a moment marked in history.

Jamaica has become a super power in track and field events in recent years, especially in the sprints, but it has never had an Olympic champion in the 200m.

The same was true of the 100m until Saturday, when Usain Bolt smashed the record and took the elusive gold medal.

Riding high on the success of their hero the crowd were already predicting a new world record, even before the race began.

"They should build a new national stadium for Jamaica when Usain wins the 200m, a brand new one in his honour when he mashes up the record," said one fan.

Wild crowds

As the race was about to begin, Bolt's appearance on the big screen caused pandemonium.

Bolt walked around the starting line, soaking up the moment and playing to the crowd in the Bird's Nest Stadium - he was also performing to his fellow countrymen here in Kingston.

When he arrives, we'll carry him on our shoulders from the airport

Flags were being waved in a frenzy and every time the cameras cut to Bolt the crowds would scream, shout - and in some cases jump up and down - in anticipation.

But as the runners went into the blocks the crowd fell nearly silent.

When the gun went off, people surged forward into the middle of the road, stopping buses and trucks to get the best view.

As Bolt went into the lead they went wild, and when he crossed the finishing line in first place and in record time, the noise was deafening.

A combination of screams, shouts, and car horns started in unison as people began to take in what they had just witnessed.

For most Jamaicans the result was expected, but had he taken the world record?

Jamaican whispers

For a moment which seemed like an eternity, there was the Jamaican version of Chinese whispers, which are more akin to a shout.

Bolt had indeed broken American athlete Michael Johnson's world record of 19.32 seconds, by clocking 19.30 in Beijing.

"He's taken home the gold in the 100 and 200m. When he arrives, we'll carry him on our shoulders from the airport to here," said one person in the crowd.

No mean feat, when you consider the airport is a good half hour's journey by car, never mind by foot with a crowd of thousands.

But here in Jamaica, Bolt's welcome home from the Beijing Games will be unprecedented in the island's history.

Sports minister, Olivia "Babsy" Grange, has already announced that a red carpet will be rolled out for the competitors who have taken part in the games, but Usain Bolt will undoubtedly be the centre of attention.

At the end of the race the sprinter was seen dancing to the Nuh Linga, a dance made popular by dancehall artist Elephant Man.

The celebrations are only just beginning for the sprinter, who turns 22 on Thursday. But he still has his heart set on gold in the 4x100m on Friday night, so he will have to wait.

Back home, they have already started celebrating on his behalf.

WOO HOO

The athletes from Jamaica just keep on amazing the world

Mr. Greased Lightning Bolt just set a new world record for the 200m - 19.3 seconds. Waaaaaay ahead of 2nd place

Then to top it off, right after we had our hearts beating at somewhat normal speed, Melanie Walker won the Gold for Jamaica in the 400m hurdles - setting a new Olympic Record time of 52.64 seconds.

Phew, I am not sure how we are going to survive the remainder of the Games as we have more to come.

As you can imagine, the celebrating on the Rock is phenomenal, so any weather systems that may have thought about coming to our area, have run like the wind.

It is a beautiful day in Ochi, slight breeze, beautiful sunny skies with the slightest hint of wispy clouds every here and there - what more could we ask for.

Congrats to ALL the athletes from all over the world for even making it to the Olympics and special wishes from the Rock for those who have medalled.

Stay safe Florida, I hear Fay is knocking on your door still

The body of an unidentified woman, believed to be in her 20s, was retrieved from an overturned sport utility vehicle in the Sandy Gully, in the vicinity of Perkins Boulevard yesterday.

Reports are that about 6 a.m. during rains associated with Tropical Storm Fay, residents saw the vehicle in the flooded gully and called the police.

Up to yesterday evening, the police were trying to determine whether the driver, believed to be a man, fled the scene after losing control of the vehicle.

Meanwhile, several homes were flooded and many roadways left impassable as heavy rains pounded sections of the island Saturday night into Sunday morning.

In the Corporate Area, 10 homes were flooded on Bloomsbury Road while another dwelling was destroyed by a landslide in Irish Town, the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) reported. A few other homes were damaged by the collapse of a wall in Cassia Park, ODPEM said.

Tropical storm watch lifted

Michelle Edwards, senior director of mitigation, planning and research at ODPEM, told The Gleaner yesterday that Kingston, St Andrew, St Catherine and Clarendon were severely affected by the storm.

The Meteorological Service at 2 p.m. yesterday lifted the tropical storm watch that had been in effect since Saturday morning.

At 1 p.m. Sunday, the centre of Fay was located near latitude 20.8 degrees north and longitude 79.8 degrees west. This is about 320 kilometres (200 miles) north-northwest of Negril Point, said the Met Service.

Edwards said that in Clarendon and St Catherine, damage was mostly caused to roadways. Three homes were flooded in Central Village, St Catherine.

Around 5 p.m. yesterday, the National Works Agency had already cleared most of the roadways that were flooded.

Tropical Storm Fay killed six persons - three in the Dominican Republic and three in Haiti - and later dumped downpours on Cuba yesterday.

Forecasters have predicted that Fay could strengthen to a hurricane and start pelting parts of Florida late Monday into Tuesday.

The skies have really cleared up and tomorrow will be a nice day. Sad to report one man died while trying to cross a flooded fording. There are reports of flooded roads and landslip ages in St.Elizabeth and the Corporate area. The clean up is well underway. Here in Western Jamaica, no big impacts from Tropical Storm Fay.Montego Bay received 14mm of rain from Tropical Storm Fay.

Previous blog update from 1pmedt

Good Morning from the proudest Country in the World.

This morning our Olympic team did it again. Shelley-Ann Fraser won the 100m finals, providing us our second gold in 24hrs. Fraser clocked a personal best 10.78 seconds for gold, with Sherone Simpson and Kerron Stewart declared joint silver medallists in 10.98 seconds as a photo-finish was unable to separate them. The entire island is celebrating this great achievement.

Despite tropical storm Fay being only 100 miles from Montego Bay, It is still a sunny morning. We experienced some light rain overnight and earlier this morning, but the rain has stopped. Outside there are many different cloud types. There are some Cumulonimbus, cumulus, stratocumulus, Some  semi- transparent Altocumulus and some very dense cirrus. So far the strongest winds only 13mph. The only action I have seen was earlier, when  the winds had a squally character despite the low speeds. The 24 hr rainfall total at my weather station is 15mm/0.6in.
