- Isolated showers tonight.
  • From: Lisa Poliah <lisa at seaviewnet.com>
  • Date: Tue, 15 Apr 2008 00:08:39 -0400
Although rain was expected today there were a few heavy clouds and surprisingly some sunshine. Last night was unbelievably cold and damp so the weather this morning was a welcome relief. According to the forecasts T and T can anticipate thunderstorms tomorrow. I'll keep my umbrella on hand. A couple of people I know have begun to get their hurricane supplies together in preparation for the 2008 predictions. Let's hope that the outlook for this year's season doesn't come to pass.

Have a good night everyone. Sleep well.

Lisa.

- Heavy showers and cricket !

  • Date: Sat, 12 Apr 2008 17:26:04 -0400
Hi everyone,

I hope you are all doing well and in good spirits this weekend.
T and T continues to have heavy showers and thundershowers from yesterday and if the forecasts are correct , we'll be drenched straight into early next week. This has not dampened the joy of cricket fans as we are looking forward to a repeat of Thursday's victory when the West Indies beat Sri Lanka in the One Day International at the Queen's Park Oval. Tickets were sold out for today's game and although I'm at home keeping score via television, my brother is somewhere in the Oval with sheer delight. Nothing could stop the passion of West Indies cricket especially when the boys pull off victory. It wouldn't matter what the weather is like as long as we beat Sri Lanka today :-) Crossing my fingers!

The rain has held up a bit in San Fernando, but those gray skies above look like they'll burst again soon. Perhaps someone could shed some light for me on the correlation between a leap year and more rain than usual? Of course with climate change anything can happen.

Enjoy the rest of the day guys, I'll be indoors...
Take care and be safe,

Lisa.

- Tobago beaches closed.
  • From: Lisa Poliah <lisa at seaviewnet.com>

In light of the current situation, all beaches in Tobago have been closed until further notice and life guards in Trinidad are on high alert. To avoid risk the public was best advised not to go into the water this weekend. Campers at Maracas Bay were today instructed to seek higher ground and seaside vendors are concerned that they stand to lose business if the food huts remain closed. It seems the next couple of days will be disappointing for those who traditionally head to the beaches for Easter.

Check out the stories:

Wishing everyone a Happy Easter!

- Monster Waves
  • From: Lisa Poliah <lisa at seaviewnet.com>
  • Date: Thu, 20 Mar 2008 02:55:44 -0400
Hi folks,

Today's issue of the Trinidad Express reports that huge waves came ashore at King's Wharf in San Fernando yesterday (Wednesday, 19th March). Crews working on nearby construction sites had to abandon their posts and many fishing boats had to be secured. The T and T Met Office has issued warnings to sea bathers, yacht owners and fishermen to pay heed to rough seas prolonging throughout the Easter weekend. Drivers using the roadway along the Mosquito Creek in South Trinidad have been advised to use the route with caution as it is expected that the waves will come over the sea wall. Life guards on duty at the nation's beaches are emphasising how dangerous this situation will be. It's quite possible many people will have to alter their plans for the long weekend ahead.

I'll keep you all posted on the situation in T and T.

Have a great day,

Lisa

- Rainy afternoon

  • Date: Wed, 05 Mar 2008 17:46:34 -0400
Hi all ,

The rains started last night and although this morning was clear, we had some heavy showers this afternoon. There's a slight drizzle now and a chilly breeze blowing across every now and again. Doesn't look like the skies will clear up any time soon. Any plans for this evening will be shelved unless it's absolutely necessary that I have to be outside. I hope that everyone is well and doing just fine.

Take care and be safe,

Lisa

- Lunar eclipse
  • From: Lisa Poliah <lisa at seaviewnet.com>
  • Date: Wed, 20 Feb 2008 18:58:16 -0400
Hello everyone,

I'm looking forward to the lunar eclipse later on tonight. Trinidad and Tobago continues to have clear skies this evening to the delight of the stargazers. It's not as chilly as it has been in the past couple of weeks so maybe we are warming up as we head towards Easter. Got my camera ready to point at the sky with the hope that I can get a good shot.
Take care of yourselves and enjoy the night!

Regards,
Lisa

P.S I wonder if there will be a sighting of a comet this year?

- Happy Valentines Day!
  • From: Lisa Poliah <lisa at seaviewnet.com>
  • Date: Thu, 14 Feb 2008 16:32:01 -0400
Just dropping a line to wish everyone a great day or what's left of it. Trinis tend to take Valentines seriously and this year it comes after Carnival so there is no distraction from mas and calypso. Many businesses reported good sales of flowers, chocolates, perfumes etc. and naturally the restaurants are booked. No doubt it's later on in the evening when things get interesting :-D

There were mild showers this morning but the skies have cleared nicely. I'm lucky to live near the sea as we're getting the ocean breezes rolling in now. I think there will be a full lunar eclipse next week and the Caribbean and South America will be fortunate to see it. Will get more details.

I have been following the elections in the US and although it's more complicated than the political process in T and T I've begun to understand it better as time goes on and it's certainly very interesting. Many persons I've spoken with clearly like Barack Obama and to echo the sentiments of the Jamaicans, there's no talk of John Mccain here. I'm looking forward to Texas and Ohio to see how Obama does.

Take care all,
Lisa

- 5.2 earthquake
  • From: Lisa Poliah <lisa at seaviewnet.com>
  • Date: Wed, 13 Feb 2008 17:47:50 -0400
Hi folks,

Just as I was about to tell you what's been happening in T and T post Carnival, we had a 5.2 quake with its epicenter located in the Gulf of Paria between Trinidad and Venezuela. It was a gentle shake and no rattling noises to speak of (at least where I am situated). Haven't heard any reports of damage to property or loss of life.

Now that carnival is over we've gone into the Lenten season. It's time for kite flying and high fish prices. As is customary, with many people off meat for forty days, the fishermen are making a killing. They say the scarcity of fish at this time of the year contributes to the price increase. With the increase in food prices, the less fortunate are feeling immense pressure.

Weather wise, T and T hasn't much sunshine since carnival. Most of today has been overcast with the occasional chilly breeze and the late nights and early mornings mean the blankets are still on hand.

Hope all is well with everyone. Have a great pre-Valentine evening! Check in with you guys tomorrow!
Regards,
Lisa.

- Countdown to Carnival
  • From: Lisa Poliah <lisa at seaviewnet.com>
  • Date: Wed, 30 Jan 2008 18:43:12 -0400
Hello to everyone,

It's been a few weeks since my last posting and I trust and hope that all is well with the Stormcarib family. The countdown to T and T's carnival is on and so far the weather has been kind. Although we haven't had endless sunshine, there were no major showers. This evening is slightly overcast with a few breezes and the blankets are still at hand for the late night chill. The major Carnival shows and competitions have had their preliminary and semi-final stages and onto the best of the best in the finals this weekend. I'm looking forward to Saturday evening when the top steel bands in the country compete in Panorama 2008 at Skinner Park, San Fernando. On Sunday the Dimanche Gras which is the combined competitions for King and Queen of the bands (costumes) and the Calypso Monarch will take place in Port of Spain. Of course in Trinidad one doesn't have to look far for a good fete to go to and there are still quite a few to be held. This is one of the earliest times that we have had Carnival soon after Christmas and many people have expressed concern over the short season in which to prepare. The mas band leaders and steel bands really had to go down to the wire this time. Nevertheless the show will go on.

Take care, be safe and have a good night
Lisa.

- End of the week
  • From: Lisa Poliah <lisa at seaviewnet.com>
  • Date: Fri, 04 Jan 2008 17:22:49 -0400
It's hard to believe that the first week in January, 2008 has ended. This looks like another swift year. Weather wise the skies have been pleasant with a few light showers in between but nothing compared to the torrents we had during late December. Although it's still a little bit cold at night the evenings are cool I've seen a couple of beautiful sunsets. Trinidad is getting into high gear for an early Carnival during the first week in February. I'm not quite feeling the usual Carnival spirit perhaps because like many Trinis I'm concerned about the crime. Looking at the possibility of taking a trip for the carnival weekend to another island for some relaxation.
Any suggestions? :-)
I hope that everyone is off to a good start for the New Year and may all your aspirations bring success in 2008.
Have a great weekend folks and as always take care and be safe.

Lisa

- HAPPY NEW YEAR!
  • From: Lisa Poliah <lisa at seaviewnet.com>

Just taking a moment from the Old Year's Night celebrations to wish everyone from Stormcarib HAPPY NEW YEAR AND BEST WISHES TO YOU AND YOURS FOR 2008! It's been enjoyable being part of the Stormcarib family and I look forward to a new year with you all. Enjoy the festivities tonight and of course tomorrow. In true Trini style I'll raise a glass in five minutes to the folks of Stormcarib! Take care see you in 2008!

Warm wishes,
Lisa.

- Soggy Seasons Greetings
  • From: Lisa Poliah <lisa at seaviewnet.com>
  • Date: Fri, 21 Dec 2007 14:37:37 -0400
Hi folks,

I was certainly hoping to send greetings from a sunny T and T. However that intention is on hold thanks to Mother Nature. Since my last posting we've had lots of rain and our rivers and dams are overflowing. Good news for the Water and Sewerage Authority because there were earlier reports of low levels at the dams.

This is one of the wettest Christmas seasons we have had in along time. Everyday I wish for the return of the sun and the easy breezes. In spite of the weather, Trinis have kept up the pace of the preparations. The shopping and the housework hasn't been hampered by the rains. The groceries and supermarkets are as full as the rivers! I was up late last night and the smell of black cake (Trini fruit cake) wafted through the house. Delicious! I'm sure it was loaded with rum and cherry brandy. One of my neighbours was baking. Earlier in the day, another person hosted a party for children less fortunate. It is comforting to know that our Christmas traditions are still ever present.

Forecasters are saying the weather will ease a bit tomorrow although the rains won't cease altogether. I'm looking forward to an improvement because Trinidad and Tobago as well as Guyana are soaked to the skin. I'll continue with indoor chores and when I can cheat the weather, I'll run out and get my last minute gifts. When the rains get me down I can always get some Christmas cheer from Stormcarib. I read greetings from Dear Miss Mermaid in Tortola today and as always her postings are delightful! I guess I did have a little indoor sunshine after all :-)

To my fellow correspondents,
COMPLIMENTS OF THE SEASON AND BEST WISHES TO EVERYONE!
Lisa.

- Rains have held up
  • From: Lisa Poliah <lisa at seaviewnet.com>
  • Date: Sat, 15 Dec 2007 12:41:57 -0400
After a slight early morning shower, the rain has given us a chance to resume the hectic Christmas pace. Though the skies aren't exactly sunny, at least for now we're not drenched. With crossed fingers, the work in my yard can continue. Tomorrow night is the San Fernando parang festival at San Fernando Hill. This is a perfect venue for open air music concerts and competitions. If anyone does not yet feel the Christmas spirit this event can change your mood. The Hill is one of T and T's most beautiful historical sites. It's something that makes the people of the southern city proud. Those of us looking forward to the festival better pray hard for great weather.

With just about a week to go before the 25th, the frenzy of the season continues. I've seen Santa in many shapes and sizes and the smell of apples and grapes is overwhelming. Delivery trucks have taken command of the roads as they transport everything possible. New furniture, mattresses, old household goods (for disposal of course), toys and the list goes on. I should be the last to talk because at 9:30 this morning, we had a load of gravel delivered to our gate for work on the front yard!
Oh yeah Trinis love the last minute rush! :-D

Got to go, enjoy the rest of the weekend everybody,

Take care and be safe,
Lisa.

- Heavy Showers and a 4.1
  • From: Lisa Poliah <lisa at seaviewnet.com>
  • Date: Thu, 13 Dec 2007 14:44:44 -0400
Lots of rain in T and T today and if this continues, I'm sure we'll be hearing reports of flooding in some of the low lying areas. There's no such thing as a light drizzle but rather a steady downpour all the time. Perhaps some companies may allow employees living in flood prone areas to head home earlier. Those who rely on public transport are going to have a difficult afternoon. I certainly hope they can get home safely before the 'crimesters' report for duty.

Incidentally, an earthquake occurred yesterday off the coast of Venezuela at 4:30 p.m measuring 4.1 It was felt in some parts of Trinidad but did not pose a threat to life or damage to infrastructure. The Seismic Unit at the University of the West Indies states that this is considered normal activity, www.earthquake.USGS/gov also carried info regarding earthquake activity near St. Lucia at about 8:30p.m last night measuring 4.6

It seems like mother nature is keeping busy in the Caribbean towards the end of the year...

By the time I get around to my next posting I hope I can speak of sunny skies instead of a rain drenched Trinidad.

To everyone enjoying great weather this afternoon, remember me :-)
Regards,
Lisa.

- Feederbands from Olga
  • From: Lisa Poliah <lisa at seaviewnet.com>
  • Date: Wed, 12 Dec 2007 15:02:17 -0400
It's been cloudy to partly cloudy for the day. Feeder bands have brought rain throughout the island and there has also been a landslide in Las Cuevas, North Trinidad. A crew from the Ministry of Works is currently in the process of clearing the debris. Luckily no one was reported injured. Rains may hamper efforts to assist stranded residents.

No one anticipated that storm weather would have extended into mid December. This wasn't on anyone's wish list. Seems this year Mother Nature didn't take a Christmas vacation. It's sad to know that seven people have lost their lives in DR. As Olga moves through, let's hope that the count is not higher.

Although the spirit of the season has been temporarily interrupted, let's hope that things can get back on track quickly with little or no adverse effects.

To everyone in the storm's path at this time, please take care and be safe.
Lisa

- Rainy day
  • From: Lisa Poliah <lisa at seaviewnet.com>
  • Date: Thu, 06 Dec 2007 16:07:15 -0400
Mild showers yesterday turned into heavy rain for most of the morning and this afternoon. Although it's clearing a little now, the skies are overcast and may be a sign of what's to come later. Tomorrow's a busy day so I'll cross my fingers that the weather clears up by then. Trinis have started their outdoor Christmas decorating. I've already seen a couple of beautiful trees. Some yards are tastefully done and some are over the top but it's all in keeping with the Christmas spirit. I'm hoping I can get my outdoor lighting done on Sunday although we've still got some work to do. Trinidadians are notorious for the last minute hustle at this time of the year but for some reason, we love the adrenalin rush.

We've got a little sunshine now so I'll head out while I can.

SEASONS GREETINGS EVERYONE!
Take care and be safe,
Lisa.

- December showers
  • From: Lisa Poliah <lisa at seaviewnet.com>
  • Date: Wed, 05 Dec 2007 15:21:49 -0400
We are not spared from the rain this month. The twin isles have had intermittent showers between yesterday and today. It's overcast as I write and it looks like there'll be rain this afternoon, maybe even into the night. Nevertheless it hasn't put a damper on the hustle and bustle of the season. The malls are crowded and there are intentions by the authorities to beef up security throughout main shopping areas. It's a welcome relief to the folks in the business sector.

All talk of last week's 7.3 earthquake has died down as daily life continues. There is concern however, that we are not prepared as we can possibly be, in the event of a major earthquake. Things need to get underway initially by properly informing and educating citizens on this type of natural disaster. Let's hope that the countries of the region can collaborate before we are faced with another one.

Just as expected, we've got a slight drizzle now and mild breezes. I don't think I'll see a December sunset this evening. Perhaps tomorrow.

To the Stormcarib folks, have a great afternoon.
As always, take care and be safe,
Lisa.

CNC3 in Trinidad carried reports of structural damage to the Central Bank Towers in Port of Spain as well as damage to other surrounding buildings in the capital. The extent of damage is not fully known and further details will be given in the 7:00p.m broadcast. Thankfully, there are no reports of injuries. At this time, we haven't heard of damage in other parts of the island. Both the BBC and CNN have reported the collapse of buildings in Martinique.

Hello everyone, are you all okay? Trinidad certainly had a shake this afternoon. Apparently based on word on the street , this quake was felt throughout Trinidad. I haven't heard any reports from Tobago just yet. Although we have our share of mild tremors periodically, this was one for concern. I was at my computer minutes before 3:00 p.m and what started as a mild tremor increased by the time I got to the living room to stand in the doorway. Just mere seconds really. Several buildings in Port of Spain and San Fernando evacuated personnel. I'm going to check the 4:00p.m news reports.

Will keep you posted very soon.

  • Date: Fri, 23 Nov 2007 13:45:26 -0400
I trust that everyone had a great Thanksgiving as we head towards the weekend. The Christmas season is well on it's way in T and T so there's no shortage of places to be this evening. Trinis love Friday's but then again , who doesn't. One can only hope that people will be careful on the nation's roads this weekend. I wonder if Santa will bring us the breathalyser and efficient highway patrol this year ? Hmmm... There is really no need to hurry, we live on an island, no place is too far, not even the rumshops.

It's a cool breezy afternoon and we consider this Christmas weather. The nights have a cold bite so out come the blankets and for some, the pajamas. I'm crossing my fingers that we don't get any unexpected rainfall. Would like things to stay as nice as it is now.

Have a good weekend everybody
Take and be safe,
Lisa

Forecasters predict isolated showers in T and T for the rest of the afternoon and into the night. So we've got to keep umbrellas around just in case we venture outdoors. Unfortunately and sadly crime is on a rampage in my beautiful country and even in the midst of the Christmas season, law abiding persons have to be ever vigilant. I want to be hopeful that the pleas of victims and their families will not continue to fall on deaf ears as is customary, but that eventually we will see a serious change for the better.

On a more pleasant note, to all my fellow correspondents who have made the islands home, I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving! Enjoy lots of turkey for me since I've got to wait until Christmas to enjoy mine. Trinis usually bake their turkeys in time for Christmas along with ham, pastelles, blackcake/fruitcake etc. No wonder there's a lot of dieting after :-D
Have a great day tomorrow
Take care and be safe,
Lisa.

Hello to all,

The silly season of political campaigning is finally over and much of the T and T population has resumed normal life. While the outcome did not produce the result that myself and just over 148,000 citizens supported, we accepted defeat but we are by no means disgraced.

We head into the long weekend as the Hindu community celebrate the festival of Divali. For my Hindu friends I hope we continue to see clear skies and sunny weather as they finalise their preparations for tomorrow. This is the last holiday of the year before we swing into the Christmas mood. As of next week there will be a flurry of activity as the shops and malls put out Yuletide goods and already there is the sound of parang music in the air.

It is indeed sad and truly unfortunate that Noel brought damage and tragedy to Haiti and the other islands. Those of us, particularly Trinis (spared time and time again) have to be thankful for not having had that experience. We send those affected our best wishes and hope they are on a path to recovery.

As the afternoon in T and T continues to be clear and filled with sunshine I wish my fellow correspondents a great weekend, be safe and as always, take care.

Regards,
Lisa.

Hello to all,

It's been quite some time since my last post. T and T is just two and a half weeks away from a general election and the campaign heat is on. I've gotten involved in one of the campaigns. As a result, I wish I could pack in a few extra hours in each day for things are moving at a hectic pace. I'm looking forward to when I can resume regular postings on Stormcarib.

To my friends and neighbours in the region it's good to know that things appear to be relatively quiet weather wise. With just a month and a little extra to go before the hurricane season is over let's hope things stay as is.

The skies are overcast in south Trinidad this evening and there's a chance of rain tonight but generally things are normal.

Take care, be safe.
Will post as often as possible until I get back to a sane life :-D

Regards
Lisa.

Hello everyone,

It was very unfortunate that four persons lost their lives on the roads in Tortola. Trinidadians know well the carnage due to speeding and recklessness on the nation's highways. It happens way too often here and I hope that it won't become a regular occurrence in the other islands. One man lost his life on the Solomon Hochoy Highway this morning and another was crushed by a truck as he stood on a pavement. We are still holding our breath while waiting for the breathalyser.

Weather wise, T and T continues to have warm/hot days, however this afternoon we're seeing some gray clouds above. The rains would be welcome. Hope they don't just tease us and blow out to sea.

Take care and be safe

Hi folks,

What seemed to be an eternal hot spell in the southern part of Trinidad has been broken by morning showers. As I write, the skies are dark and there's a slow but steady drizzle outside, accompanied by the faint sound of thunder in the distance. Although some persons welcome the rain, I'm sure the promoters and patrons of this weekend's San Fernando Jazz Festival 2007 are keeping a watchful eye on the weather.

Indoor shows start tonight at some of San Fernando's popular hotels and jazz clubs. The main event takes place at the top of San Fernando Hill one of the nation's most beautiful historical landmarks on Saturday, September 29th. Show time starts at 7:00p.m. Featured performer this year will be Aaron Neville along with some of T and T's finest jazz and steel pan artistes.

For anyone who's contemplating, it's not to late to hop aboard one of the regional carriers and come on down. Nothing can compare to live jazz under the stars.

Have a great afternoon and as always be safe.

Hello everyone,

The weather in the past couple of days has been unbearably hot and any rainfall has not helped much in cooling things down. It feels as if we are closer than ten degrees north of the equator. The nights are just as hot and maybe people in the air condition business are making a killing. Seems as though the weather is mimicking the political climate in T and T. We are due to go to the polls soon and the major contenders are all fired up as they hit the campaign trails.

Forecasters predict scattered showers tomorrow with the chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. That's something I wouldn't mind at all.

Wishing everyone a goodnight,

Although Trinidad is considered fortunate to escape the effects of a hurricane we have had our share of tremors. To the folks in St Lucia and the other islands that felt yesterday's quake you might want to check out this site:

www.neic.usgs.gov/neis/bulletin

It lists earthquakes around the world over the past seven days. The people in Indonesia must be on edge as they have had at last count, five earthquakes in the past three to four days all above 6 on the Richter scale.

It's Friday! Wishing all a great weekend.

As Tropical Storm Humberto heads to Louisiana and Texas at 45mph, it's possible, that what is now known as Tropical Depression 8 could become Ingrid. Let us all hope that whatever path this takes, it won't be indicative of "hell hath no fury like a woman scorned"

In contrast to yesterday's weather, we've been having breezes and sunshine for much of the day. A few houses in south Trinidad succumbed to roof damage as a result the previous rain and winds and the owners are getting assistance from the relevant agencies.

Looking on to see what happens next with TD 8 and wishing all a great afternoon

Showers and thunderstorms are the order of the day. We are experiencing the effects of a wave over us. However, this does not appear to be a prelude to 91L. Based on the predictions to date it seems unlikely that we would be affected by the system at any stage. Of course let's bear in mind, tomorrow is another day and the unpredictable nature of the weather gives way to any possibility. If the rains continue into the afternoon, flooding can occur in low lying parts of the island and many people will want to get out of Port of Spain to avoid the agony of the yet unsolved problem of major traffic jams.
Will continue to cast an eye on 91L.
To everyone have a great afternoon and to those who are as drenched as we are let's hope we see a rainbow soon.
Take care, be safe

After seeing Penny's comments yesterday, I went to Roatan online. Penny your island is beautiful and it is understandable why you were annoyed. The recklessness of inaccurate reporting can be just as detrimental as a Cat 5. Before posting a comment to CNN, I went to other news sites to see if they may have done the same in their reporting. Luckily nothing turned up. Citizen journalism has found a place in the way news is reported and is a great way to monitor some of the methods used by mainstream media to gain ratings at the expense of peoples' circumstances. Thanks to sites like Stormcarib, an individual can give a firsthand account of what they may or may not be experiencing without the intervention of media sensationalism and insensitivity.

To everyone at Stormcarib, have a great afternoon and as always, be safe.

Good to hear that the folks in Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao were spared much of the wrath of Felix. To Penny in Honduras and Diane in Belize, I have never experienced anything close to what you and the people of these countries are about to face. As you make your preparations, keep in mind that the citizens of T and T have you in our thoughts and our hearts. Please be safe and take care. Lisa

Last night we got like four hrs of gusty winds and rain , the winds were blowing in a north westerly direction and that is a rare thing here that suggest that the system may have become more organized.  We still have evidence of hurricane flora  close to my home , tamarind trees are still lying face north and south from the catastrophic winds of that killer storm.
up  the this time we have little drizzle but gusty winds .,,  my cane patch is bowing to the  north west  my Dog is Howling due to the wind i supposed.

It snow day break and we can see the clouds racing to the north ..

The latest advisory indicates that TD6 is about to pass through the Windward Islands. While some are starting to feel the effects, all is quiet in San Fernando, South Trinidad. Not a leaf is blowing, everything seems perfectly still and unusually so. To everyone have a good night or rather a good morning. Be safe and take care. We'll see what the next few hours will bring. Very light continuous rain in Westmoorings - no wind to speak about. My parents were on their porch in Tobago enjoying the light show - along with the corresponding thunder, which was directly over them in the Tobago Hilton region. Some rain, but no stormy conditions. We fly to Tobago tomorrow afternoon, so hoping there will be no problems. Turning in for the night now.

  • From: "Dr. Lesel Ali-De Silva" <leselali at gmail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 31 Aug 2007 20:39:08 -0400
My parents in Tobago have started to hear some thunder rolls and see lightning, coming from the north. Conditions are still cool and calm - no rain as yet. Evidently there is supposed to be a fireworks display in Tobago, but they have not heard of it being cancelled. Would have expected it since they are under a tropical storm warning..... Up in the West of Trinidad it has cooled down considerably. We had one shower about 2 hours ago and simultaneously lost electricity. Both lasted about 10 minutes but I'm not sure they were related. The satellite picture looks much more ominous than conditions on the ground, but there is still more of the system coming. We wait and watch.

Just had a look at the beautiful sunset. Might as well enjoy it before things change. It's quiet in San Fernando but I must agree with the correspondent from Westmoorings, the birds are singing their hearts out. My German Shepherds, Maggie and Bella are snoozing and that's good because they'll be uneasy once the thunder claps. The sky is overcast and the place is calm. You get a sense that somethings up ahead. Will be back after the 7 o'clock news. Regards, Lisa

Hello from a deadly calm Trinidad - just went out for a run and not a leaf was moving. Saw many birds out singing! The waters in the West are a little choppy but not much to talk about. The roads are very quiet. My parents in Tobago - which is under a tropical storm warning now - says there is a strange chill in the air and it is very dark and overcast. No rain for a while. Tobago Express flights are still leaving though - don't know what the airports have planned. Will send another report soon

After a very hot and humid morning a very dark sky in the east of the Island rain has started to pour and it has been falling very hard within the last hour. I'm expecting flash flooding in certain parts in the east and we did experience some gusty winds with the rain along with lightening and thunder. The Hills look like a lot of rain has been falling up there so we should watch out for the river banks which could soon over flow causing floods through out.

Listened to the 4:00p.m news a couple of minutes ago just on the off chance that I may hear some information on Tropical Storm Dean. As expected , no news so far. I'm not surprised. Trinidad is not known for providing timely and accurate information regarding these matters. Nevertheless, I'll keep my ear to the ground in the hope that I can garner snippets of news from the local media. There are those of us in the twin island republic who have friends and relatives in the islands that maybe affected. The current perception that Trinidad is under no apparent threat does not auger well. We all know how unpredictable these systems can be. To my fellow islanders in the region take care and be safe. Will continue, as we all are to monitor the situation. Regards, Lisa.

Hello to everyone, seems like we are in for an entire day of rainy weather. Drizzle started at about ten o'clock this morning and within the hour down came the showers. It held up a bit around noon but the skies are still heavy and it looks like we'll experience another downpour. These are the days when I'm grateful to be working from home. Good morning everyone. The sun is peeking out, there is the hint of a breeze from the NNE and you'd think it was any other day.

From the looks of the sat image, I'd say we will have quite a bit of rain to deal with.
Flooding is certain in the central basin and towns with street drains clogged from the garbage people throw anywhere anytime. Plastic bottles and styrofoam cups head the list.

In a day or two you can visit Hart's cut and see tons of it deposited on the shoreline as the wind drives it Westward over the water surface when the rivers wash it down into the Gulf.

Just saw the sat loop. I believe we're going to have to deal with some wind as well but I find it hard to tell how much. This thing is "producing" this morning and is has a few hours to do anything it wants over warm water before it gets here. Won't be surprised if it organizes by then or soon after. We're all in God's hands.

Hope you guys up north are paying attention because in Trinidad, we don't have a lot of storm experience. In that I find a dangerous catch, how do you get the experience without the storms? There is where we payin lives.

( I have taken to poetry and talking to the weather now, I must be losing it).

Rained here yesterday afternoon and last night. I was beginning to wonder, two or three dry days in succession? Now that's been cured. Nice and cool this morning.

This season is beginning to remind me of last year's (wishful thinking), we still have a way to go yet, but I would not mind if it did turn out similarly.
One person seems to have bought all the Coleman fuel. None on the shelves and the agents are out. You know? I guess they are hoping to corner the market in the event of a threat. I guess it's always business as usual for some.

The low presssure system has become more defined and intensified as it moves closer to the islands. This system can become a tropical depression later today.
Tobago needs to pay attention

- Tobago may be in its path!

The low pressure system has shifted more to the south bringing it closer to the island of Tobago. As the winds have decreased, the system is struggling to go any further without dissipating. While it maintains its shape and can increase its moisture content at any time, it has to be watched very closely tonight.

Since the winds are concentrated in the SW quadrant of the low and there is reduced wind shear above ,I believe that this has the potential to pass very close to Tobago.

- Something is brewing in the Atlantic!

Hi Gert,
The coordinates for this low is very close to the island of Tobago. While I am aware of its distance, what worries me is the persistence through the dust cloud. It is spinning along and passing a channel of very warm water. This is definitely one to watch.

Hi Gert,
It is time to begin the monitoring of these systems. As you may not be aware there is no radar system in Trinidad so until we get our Doppler radar installed ,we are sitting ducks when a system is a few miles away from us.God is our saviour !

Hi Gert,

The rains are here!
The southwest of Trinidad is experiencing heavy rainfall at this time and the wind shift is notable on the satellite viewer. There are small cloud build ups in the atlantic but the noticeable feature is the white segments representing thundershowers

Hello everyone I just want to let you all know after a very dry season the rain has began to fall in certain parts of Trinidad and end the dry spell that we've had for the last couple of months that led to dry taps and conservation of water. Although we in Trinidad & Tobago are glad to have the rain we do hope that this season we don't get any storms or hurricanes. I do hope the other Islands get the rain fall they need as well and I do hope to hear from you guys soon.
