- Dry so.
  • From: "Robert & Colleen Krucia" <krucias at wow.net>
  • Date: Sun, 25 Mar 2007 13:35:57 -0400
Well the season is on the horizon so, I'll mention a few observations and wait like all of us to see what this year brings, just for the heck of it or "dry so" as we say in Trinidad.

Our dry season again is not so dry. It did not really dry out until the end of February or so either and the bush fires started, but this past week we have begun to have some rain already. Yesterday I noticed the green coming back already in the Eastern parts of the island. In another few days the now brown Queen's Park Savannah will begin to show it's reaction to the light regular showers we have been having, some at night when they are most useful. What a refief from all the (local) dust! Not just from parched grounds but with the amount of construction going on in Port of Spain, it's been awful. Of course it's been pretty windy as expected for this time of year. A mixed blessing as it cools us off but also carries the dust. The drug stores have been making a killing with cough medicine I am sure. We're also just about through a particularly bad bout of Sahara dust. That reduced visibility so badly, from the Lady Young road early last week I could not see Patos.

Not much has changed in Trinidad with disaster preparedness over the last few years. There has been a lot of talk since Grenada and Ivan, which was an eyeopener, but no real action. So... here we are ( I refuse to repeat myself again and again).

I think this year will be more active than last year but not all that worse.  I say let's hope, pray and trust God. The "pundits" seem to think otherwise, I'm not one. We'll see.

The showers are heavy, the winds are gusting and thunder is rolling overhead. The dark sky is lit up by sporadic streaks of lightning.
Trinidad is still under the effects of the tropical depression
The heavy showers were concentrated earlier today more to the north east of the island but now the south west is receiving its share of heavy rainfall and strong winds

- Strong tropical wave approaching!
  • From: "adesh nanan" <adeshcnanan at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Thu, 24 Aug 2006 11:01:20 +0000
There is an eerie calm at this time. The initial rays of sunshine have disappeared. The grey clouds are building as the satellite picture shows the imminent arrival of heavy showers and thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds. At this time it is raining cats and dogs in Tobago. The wave appears to be strengthening as it approaches and I pray that it weakens because it is heading for a direct hit on Trinidad

- What a Thunderstorm
  • From: "Michelle Rudder" <themiche at tstt.net.tt>
  • Date: Mon, 31 Jul 2006 20:33:17 -0400
At about 5:45pm, what started out as a little blob of rain, converged and expanded on the west coast over the Gulf of Paria, into a severe thunderstorm. The storm had really good form and was accompanied by gusty winds in Diego Martin, torrential rain for about an hour and lightning in the distance. Fortunately the brunt of the storm was over the gulf. Still, it was amazing to see the sattelite loop showing its growth over a short 30 minute period.

All is quiet now, and will probably remain that way for a while, save for the normla scattered afternoon thunder showers tomorrow. Fingers crossed for those further north that the tropical wave remains under the influence of dust and wind shear, our saviours so far, for the season.

- Dangerous Lightning!

  • Date: Tue, 01 Aug 2006 00:04:33 +0000
At 6.00pm this evening severe lightning lit up the western sky with distant thunder.Very little rainfall accompanied this event.Presently there is still thunder overhead but no rain at this time. This may have been a feeder band from the disturbance on the outskirts of the leeward islands

- Storm clouds heading for Tobago!
  • From: "adesh nanan" <adeshcnanan at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Mon, 31 Jul 2006 02:20:39 +0000
This Tropical Wave although shifting in position is now moving to the South towards Tobago with heavy showers and gusty winds. The IR satellite loop at this time is showing this trend. In Palmiste in Trinidad there was heavy rainfall accompanied with lightning and loud thunder for half an hour starting at 3.00pm today.Presently the humidity is high and again an eerie calm . I hope that Tobago will be spared any intense rainfall to avoid dangerous landslippage.

Hi Gert,
The temp is 29, humidity very high but the rain has stopped. The satellite picture shows the formation of an eyewall along the wave.I do not know if it is my imagination but this wave is playing games as it moves nearer to the islands. We still have to watch this one carefully.

- Wake-up call.
  • From: "Robert & Colleen Krucia" <rnckrucia at wow.net>
  • Date: Fri, 28 Jul 2006 18:36:26 -0400
Hi again,
This afternoon North Trinidad experienced torrential rains, lightning and around 30 mph wind resulting in flooding of the Western Main Rd between Bournes Rd. in the west and around Calcutta St. to the East. The road was covered in mud as I headed home.
Smokey & Bunty had a power washer going on their corner in preparation for the night's "activity" but with all the cars going by and the mud drying out for blocks either way, I'd say it will be a dust-o-rama out there tonight.  No reports of damages yet. I guess we will hear more tonight on the news.

I'd say take this as a wake-up call for the next few weeks as that system East of us is set to come alive over the next 24-48 hours. I do not wish this on anyone else and pray it turns northward well before it reaches any land at all. Usually when these start they are followed closely by another and another. Hopefully we will be spared that. Unfortunately this is the nature of the "beast" that is the hurricane season.

More if need be after the news at 7.00 pm.

- Strong Tropical Wave !
  • From: "adesh nanan" <adeshcnanan at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 28 Jul 2006 03:30:52 +0000
Hi Gert,

As conditions become more favourable ,a system in the Central Atlantic has the potential for further development. It is on a course with the Winward Islands and should be monitored very closely. We should not get complacent even though there is an eerie calm from the "monster machine". I pray that this one weakens over the next day or so since Trinidad is not ready for a storm because there was a heavy downpour in our capital city,Port of Spain, yesterday and the said city was flooded.I rest my case

- Hark! Whats that I see?
  • From: "Robert & Colleen Krucia" <rnckrucia at wow.net>
  • Date: Thu, 27 Jul 2006 21:53:26 -0400
Hello everybody,
I know it's been a while since I last posted. It's not like nothing's been going on but I'd be repeating myself "a la perennial fl00ds" the minute we get a few decent showers. Honestly it's been raining almost everyday for the last two weeks roughly, if not longer.  Yesterday was thunderous, reminiscent of the raucous morning '94 Charley's precursor passed north of us. We did have significant flooding last week in the "traditional" areas again because there was inadequate preparation for the rainy season, blah blah blah.

I have been hearing more here about disaster preparedness lately since Ivan and Grenada's "revisit" with... Emily. However it is still only talk. It is impossible to measure what has been actually done. Only time and a real test will tell. Lets hope we don't go there.
The social aftermath of a real hurricane hitting Trinidad is a daunting thought as well given our present crime situation. Let's hope we never go there.

Our powers that be are too busy with "other matters" not related to real government but God does keep record and all of us must give account for our stewardship to the one who gave us that authority in the first place. Geeeze I did say I did not want to be repeating myself?

Latitude= 8.37° N Longitude= 33.29° . WHAT'S THAT!??? I'd rather cry wolf and be wrong than be blowing the whistle on a rogue. I don't like the looks of it. It has way too much time to play with out there. Gee I am sure it's not a "wind"-up toy, those are obsolete aren't they? So why does it look like it wants to be "winding up"? Chups.

I end by praying, you God in your infinite mercy will see us all safely through "hurricanes 2006" and spare us any real drama this season. Last year was enough to see Ivan - (the hurricane that would not go away) outdone by Katrina- (the hurricane in which New Orleans went away).
We would just rather not see Katrina outdone. All Glory and thanks to you Lord, and everybody said? AMEN!

Bye for now.

- First real taste for 2006
  • From: "Keith Ferreira" <kferreira at library.uwi.tt>
  • Date: Thu, 29 Jun 2006 08:22:43 -0400

The first real taste of “bad” weather for us here in Trinidad and Tobago was yesterday 28-06-06, it started well before dawn and it rained relentlessly through out the day. The good news is up to news time “7pm” there were little or no sign of flooding in the low laying area. Hopefully this would be the trend for the rest of the Hurricane season. Talk to you later.

- Tropical Wave
  • From: "adesh nanan" <adeshcnanan at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Fri, 02 Jun 2006 15:29:50 +0000
Hi Gert,
This is a real coincidence that once the hurricane season arrives ,we have a strong tropical wave on our doorstep.
It has been raining heavily in North Trinidad and in Tobago
It will take a while for the ground to become saturated due to the intense heat over the last few months.
We can never say never with mother nature.
It is time once again to be diligent in monitoring the developing weather patterns
