- Ash from Montserrat Volcano here in Puerto Rico!
  • From: "Francisco Echegaray" <fechegaray at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Thu, 5 Oct 2006 23:25:34 +0000
I was surprised this afternoon when I went out to my garden and found all the
plants covered with a thin layer of whitish/cream dust. The plastic chairs in
the garden were also very dirty with the same substance. The little rain we
had today was enoght to clean all the dust from the air and brough it down over
San Juan and I guess all over the east part of Puerto Rico. I suspected
that our old friend, the volcano at Montserrat had had another tantrum, since
these ash signs reminded me of yet a more serious ash incident in Puerto Rico
around the year 2000. I went and checked out the NOAA website and confirmed
that indeed, there was a big ash emission from Montserrat volcano just
yesterday, oct. 4 2006. So the winds were just right to bring the ash cloud
this way. Oh, well I guess the ash may serve as fertilizer for the plants.
Definitely better on the soil than in the air.... Still it is a curious
atmospheric event for us in Puerto Rico where there are no active volcanos.

I can saw in the Satellite picture, the circulation
about the 5:00pm, but in this time, It's loose much of
the circulation clouds. The zone of most rain is at
northwest. That affect to Island of the north
(Leeward). I guess that this Wave, don't gonna be in a
depression or a Storm. We have short time to be ready.

- Chris the ghost storm!
  • From: "Francisco Echegaray" <fechegaray at hotmail.com>
  • Date: Thu, 3 Aug 2006 17:29:16 +0000

Chris, the friendly ghost!   Thats how I am calling this blob in satellite pictures.  I can't believe the US weather service is still saying there are winds of 40 mph out there and possibility of flooding by 1-5 inches of rain.  As all inhabitants of San Juan Puerto Rico know the story could not be further from the truth.   And the truth is that here in San Juan, PR there HAS NOT BEEN ANY WIND AT ALL!!! and ALMOST NO RAIN!!
Yesterday afternoon we had very little rain for a brief period of time.  Early this morning we had some dryzzle but nothing stronger than that.   The trees could not be more still -there has been absolutely no wind and practically no rain in spite of all the clouds that you can see over PR in the satellite picture.

Chris just fizzled down as some ghost use to do in movies and comic strips!  It was just an apparition, a little scary for a while.  That's why I am calling it  Chris, the friendly ghost!

By the way, it reminds me of another tropical storm. I believe it was José in 1999 which was another "ghost storm" that had a similar route and came from the noth on us to do absolutely nothing - no wind and barely any rain.

Well that's how it is now, but earlier in the afternoon there were supermarkets and gas stations filled with customers, myself included. Hopefully all will be well around here tomorrow, and my best wishes to people in the islands that are affected by this storm as I write this.

- Overcast

Greetings! This Good Friday we woke up to an overcast sky. Temperature is close to the low 80's,but it feels warmer than that, probably due to the lack of wind. The Carolina-area beaches are nice and filled with beach lovers, the waves are calm and the water looks great, especially with blue-green color that looks very inviting.
Enjoy your weekend,
Alex
