- A TRIBUTE TO MRS FULLER
  • From: "MARTHA WATKINS GILKES" <gilkesm AT candw.ag>
  • Date: Wed, 24 Apr 2002 01:01:49 -0400
I would  like to make a tribute to a great lady known island wide,  Mrs. Adele  Fuller who was laid to rest here in Antigua yesterday...... She was the mother of  seven,  including  John........

Most of you know of John Fuller,  who is one of the  "faithful"  to  record hurricane happenings  in the height of the storm  for those of you  who  are comforted by knowing what is happening in  hurricane city...     ( John  is very faithful to  keep the info flowing..... except when he gets stuck in the  "back room" with the boys drinking rum!!)

His mother and  father came to  Antigua in the  late 1940s  and  built the  FIRST  HOTEL ON THE BEACH which has been in operation ev. since except for  hurricane damage in recent year........ (it is now being  lovingly resorted by the  3rd generation and will soon be open  for  visitors  the web site being developed at present    -  check out     lordnelsonantigua.com        for more)....

Mrs. Fuller made many contributions to  this island,  including running the  LORD NELSON hotel for many years.   The whole island,  including our Prime Minister, turned out  to pay respects to her in  a  moving church service yesterday followed by  a great gathering at   THE LORD NELSON Hotel, where  I am sure  she was smiling down on her  hotel coming  back to life.    In memory of her................

- WADADLI Antigua's own rescued hooded seal

Title: University of New England Marine Science Center - News

HI AGAIN GUYS AND GALS.. It won't be long before we are back to HURRICANE REPORTING - although we hope not too often -  so while we have a break wanted to  give you something  exciting to read about  that relates to our paradise island!
Last AUGUST  Antigua had a unique happening take place.   An  ARTIC SEAL  came ashore  on one of our beaches.   The  atttached  story recently published in THE LIAT ISLANDER IN FLIGHT MAGAZINE  tells the background.  The web site below tells  the story after the rescue and also there is information below on what is presently happening with Wadadli.

Also attached is the  BBC story of  CLEO (thanks to John fuller),  another  baby seal who went the OTHER way and was rescued.

This was  an amazing story for Antigua  for as one of the rescuers, Roddy Grame Grimes said,  "it was the story of the TRUE HUMAN SPIRIT.  There were many volunteers who stayed and protected Wadadli the night he was found on the beach".     Those who took part are too  numerous to  name but it certainly showed the out pouring of  human kindness on a helpless stranded marine mammal.

Young, Hooded Seal Recuperates from Caribbean Shark Wounds at Marine Science Center

Wadadli at the time of his rescue in Antique.
Wadadli, a young, male, hooded seal that swam from its home in the North Atlantic to the Caribbean where it was rescued by the Coast Guard of Antigua, is spending 30 days recuperating at the University of New England Marine Science Education and Research Center.

Wadadli, when he was rescued, was suffering from several shark wounds and sand in his digestive system.

Named by his Caribbean hosts in the island’s native language, Wadadli means “island of lots of oil” and is the original name of Antigua, a British Island in the West Indies. Weighing only 56 pounds when rescued on August 13, 2001, he now weighs 180 pounds (fully grown he will weigh 600-800 pounds) and eats 12 pounds of fish a day.

Wadadli was originally under the care of the Caribbean Stranding Network and Caribbean Marine Mammal Laboratory, Universidad Metropolitan.

Rehabilitation Plan
Wadadli arrived at Logan International Airport late Friday, March 29, 2002 and then was transported by van to UNE’s Marine Science Education and Research Center on the
Wadadli before making the trip back north via airplane.
Biddeford Campus. The first night he was kept in the Dry Isolation Room, off-limits to visitors, but on Saturday morning he was moved to the Communal Rehabilitation Room.

Wadadli will spend 30 days at UNE for acclimation, pre-release conditioning and medical assessment prior to release. After 30 days, given the “green light,” the seal will be tagged, fitted with a satellite radio-transmitter and released at Granite Cove.

UNE’s Marine Science Center is the only facility of its kind on any college or university campus, combining marine education, research and rehabilitation in one building. The $8 million facility, featuring flow-through seawater laboratories for teaching and research and a state-of-the-art marine mammal rehabilitation clinic licensed by the National Marine Fisheries Service, opened in September 2001.

Arctic seal's odyssey
An arctic seal is on its way home through the UK after heading off-course and ending up in the Mediterranean.

Cleo, an eight-months-old hooded seal, was found in shallows on Spain's Costa del Sol, severely underweight.

An airline gave her a free lift from Malaga to London.

But a connecting flight to Scotland was cancelled and she ended up being taken by van to the National Seal Sanctuary at Gweek, in Cornwall.

Cleo, hooded seal
Cleo, an Arctic seal, got a free UK flight from Spain

There she has recovered to a healthy 50kg - nearly eight stone - making her ready for the next part of her long journey home.

The third leg is an overland trip of more than 800 miles along the length of mainland Britain to Wick, near John O'Groats - either by road or by rail.

From there, she is to be taken by boat to join a colony of seals in the Arctic.

Hooded seals are rarely seen as far south as Britain, let alone Spain.

seal pool
Cleo has been nursed at Gweek seal sanctuary
One was found at Treyarnon Bay, Cornwall, in 1995, and another survived beaching at Little Haven, Pembrokeshire, in July this year.

The species is seen only very seldom on the Orkney and Shetland coasts.

It is not clear how Cleo came to wander so far from her normal feeding grounds in the North Atlantic.

Mark Steward, who has helped care for her, said: "Maybe there's a lack of fish up there and they are moving further south to try and find food."

Over-fishing by human rivals may be to blame.

Cleo should reach home just in time for the coldest weeks of the sunless Arctic winter.

The temperature at 5AM and 6AM was 68F (20C)!!! It took a while for me to

However, it seems to be clearing up as there are larger patches of blue
but I think we may be due for some more rain later.

This morning was overcast, but the weather has deteriorated significantly.
Currently, it is POURING down in the Lower Fort road area. The sky is
completely overcast, no gaps at all.

We need the rain but this is not weather for sailing or sunseekers :-( as

I know, this is old news, but still need to tell u what happened.    Freak Storm's what they call it?...yes...  well! That was a storm,a big one too. Heavy rain, gusty wind(up to 50-60 mph) and thunderstorm and not leaving out waterspout(or even tornados).....All caught us by surprise yesterday. I thought it was an unregistered Hurricane at first. That 'thing' knock out one third of Antigua's electricity, down poles, uproot trees, overturn stalls................etc,etc. I was almost blown off my feet when i try to run it out. Anyway,it was bad(except it didn't tear off 'roofs'). Power is off in my area for 20 hrs. A guy house got burn down from transmitter explosions, the airport radar got blown down, the MET say we can expect more of these weather for the next few days as long as that trough stays. Thats all i can say for now.Lets hear from the other Islands, heard that they got a share too.   lata.

- SUPERCELL !!!
  • From: "Alan B. Scholl" <scholla AT candw.ag>
  • Date: Fri, 14 Dec 2001 07:40:27 -0400 (AST)

Well where do I start? At around 6:38, the sky opened up and the wind
started howling and it got stronger and stronger. That initial point, the
wind had to have been gusting around 20-30 knots.

5 minutes later we lost power in the Lower Fort Road area. The storm
further intensified and the rain got really heavy. Looking at my
neighbour's house who had his generator and lights on, I could see the
rain sheets coming down and the wind whipping about the trees. At that
point around 19:45, it was gusting close to 40-45 at times. It then
settled down for the most part into constant rain with occasional gusts up
to aroung 23:40 it went completely quiet and I nodded off to bed.

I awoke this morning with the power still off. Some small trees are down
and there are leaves everywhere. On the way to work, there were numerous
small trees bent over but nothing really big. There are reports of utility
poles and larger trees down but I did not witness that on my route.

Any reports from St.Kitts, the larger supercell that the met office
kept talking about was headed that way?

The beaches on the northwestern end (Dickenson Bay, Runaway Bay, Fort

This weather is just suitable for staying indoor (real fustrating).
Since 10a.m. yesterday or earlier, it started to rain. Right now, the sky is double layer overcast (imagine that), it rain so heavy an hour ago that visibility has been reduce from half a mile to 1/5 of a mile. And the wind is blowing at 30+ mph with heavy thunder and lightning.
Temperature is around 29'~C. This weather seem to last forever.

Over the last 24 hours, we have been experiencing lots of thunderstorm
activity. During our Jolly Harbour Saturday yacht races, there numerous
squalls with short burst of very gusty wind 25-30 knots wityh occasional
cloud to cloud lightning (followed by thunder).

Power is off at the moment and it has been raining most of the night and

for at least another day or so.

for those who have never experienced an hurricane-
during normal windy weather or even during a non-cyclonic storm, gusts
are usually fast and finished very quickly-- but gusts associated with our huuricanes are remarkedly longer in length and peculiar to their association with
impending cyclones (hurricanes etc....).
gusty and squally here-also humid-gusts in the 20s.

Yes.. it has developed and the hurricane hunters left to pin point
exactly where late this a.m (SUNDAY)... so by early evening we will know a
lot more about it!
IT IS EXPECTED TO BECOME A HURRICANE in a few days AND IS EXPECTED TO
STAY SOUTH AND FOLLOW SIMILAR COURSE TO IRIS BUT WE HAVE TO WATCH IT
CLOSELY. A north turn would bring it close to Antigua. LATER...

Whoa! Two serious appearing storms in October. Not a whole lot happening
up here in the Northern Leewrds. The sun is out and there are occasional
light gusts. It is also quite warm.

It seems as this year (so far), the Windwards and now the western
Caribbean have been in the bullseye. After these two, I hope it all quiets
down, I am not ready for another "backwards Lenny".

Am sending this from MISSION CONTROL of Hurricane Hunters here in St.
Croix .. they are flying IRIS now..which hopefully wont hit Jamaica or
Caymans...as it seems..
but we will surely see JERRY develop in next few days...some models
have it following course of IRIS...and some have it turning
north..hurricane hunters will fly it in a day or 2 and tell us
more......so Antigua keep alert...this may be another late
season/October attention getter.. stay sober boys in the back room!!!

I was awoken very early this morning with the wind howling a bit and some
very heavy rain beating down on the roof. In spite of the fact that
Antigua seemed to be on the fringe of this system, we did get some strong
gusts accompanied by lots of rain.

Hope all is well with our Windward neighbours...

A lot of the upper level clouds have parted and there are larger patches
of blue sky. It is still hazy and overcast but mainly large swarms of
cumulus clouds moving east to west.

The surface maps (URL following) show three LOWS and according to the
reports, the one closest to the Windwards has "possible signs of
development".

Hopefully, we should get some more needed rain.

The rain is needed so we can be thankful for that. It is also very cool
which is a change from the recent heat spells we had last week.

you could barely see the moon through the clouds. There was some heavy
showeractivity in the south a few minutes ago but there seems to be some
streaks of blue alternating between the cloud cover.

YES.. it was real..that  tremor  we  had last night...at  7:10 p.m.!
It was located 17.19 degree N   61.47 West... REAL CLOSE TO US!!!  and  was  between 5.5-6 on the  rict. scale.. lasted 15 seconds with  after math of 5 seconds...   Antigua is directly over the fault line between Atlantic and Caribbean..so that is why we  get  them  from time to time... last  major one was October 8th, 1974...
nothing  of   interest out there hurricane wise...thank goodness.........

YIKES!!! Well as was expected TD 7 has formed in the Atlantic!

The track according to Weather Underground has it WNW just passing
slightly NE of the Leewards. This track uis just a bit too close for
comfort. I hope these waves don't produce a "March of Storms" as I found
in this 1995 picture of LUIS and IRIS archived at Unisys Corp:

  • Date: Fri, 7 Sep 2001 10:36:18 -0400 (AST)

It seems our comments may have awoken the Atlantic. There are three waves
drifting off Africa, the second one according to the surface map at
Intellicast has an circular isobar line. Could this indicate potential
development?

The maps show some form of circulation and the Tropical Outlook from
weather Underground favours early development on the first wave with
mention of potential development from #2. We need to keep a keen eye on
these waves.

LOCALLY: Overcast (7 oktas), pacthes of dark clouds with breaks, some
occasional shower activity in the south. This morning my car was coated in
dew and it was a bit cooler than usual for tis time of the year?

Just yesterday I read that this is only the 4th time in 50 years that a
hurricane has not formed! Would we be lucky this year? Would Dr. Gray be
wrong?

Before even preparing breakfast, I logged on to find TS ERIN straing down
our alley :-) The track from both:

http://www.Intellicast.com/Tropical and
http://www.nlmoc.navy.mil/home1.shtml

show it turning northwest of the Leewards but this will certainly have to
be monitored VERY closely.

Current conditions are slightly overcast with some early morning showers.

We got half an inch of rain yesterday, but today, weather is rather blooming with only partly cloudy skys.

This year,we have enter a strange trend, disturbance dosen't develop until they have pass a certain longtitude such as >35W<.A tropical wave is approching this degree,so today it has a 30% chance of develop further,a 50% chance for remaining as it is with little change and a 20% chance of dissipating compared with the 20%,50%,30% yesterday.
Good luck to all...

The 1st of September being the threshold of peak storm activity in hurricane alley impelled me this morning to engage the final defences for the coming weeks. They are in chronological order:
1.Freshly brewed coffee.
2.Freshly squeezed orange juice.
3.One pound of hickory smoked bacon fried gently.
4.A half pound of pork sausages slowly sauted.
5.A half dozen eggs fried over medium (salt and pepper).
6.A loaf of cinnamon raisin bread warmed(some toasted).
7.Lots of both salted and unsalted butter.
8.Stawberry jam with whole chunks of srawberries.
9.More coffee.

Install,check the web and snooze.
Ready for anything.

- Wave off Africa...
  • From: "Alan B. Scholl" <scholla AT candw.ag>
  • Date: Fri, 31 Aug 2001 14:13:17 -0400 (AST)

The wave seems to have some circular motion. The Atlantic Ocean map in
motion from http://www.weather.com indicates this.

From http://wwwwunderground.com/tropical, this is quoted "While the
system is currently poorly organized...conditions appear to be favorable
for development ..." so we need to monitor this closely for the next few
days.

It is currently overcast with some shower activity in the eastern and
southern areas of the island. There were some showers in the north earlier
today.

We got rain a while ago.(Thats all I can say,not much happening.)

A look at the Atlantic is real boring,But a look at this>>>> SST will show that the Sea Surface Temperature is warming towards the north.<loading the animation may take a while>
A look at this>>>> WS will show the vertical wind shear(cyclone development also depend on this, high shear meant no development) has not improve much during the past 5 days.
Overall,at this rate, big shots(hurricane) might not develop until mid September or later. But I might be wrong, maybe,it might be earlier. In either case,I don't like the quietness of the Atlantic right now, maybe its gathering energy to spawn another activity period.
