- ...and more rain

Against all odds the concensus of opinion at the Meteorological office is
that the indistinct eye of Lenny passed over Antigua within the last couple
of hours. We had HEAVY rain and gusty winds all morning, then a couple of
hours calm, and within the last 30 minutes a band of extremely heavy rain
and lightning like I have never seen before. We were stuck in our SUV in
front of our house with heavy bolts repeatedy striking within 50-100 yards
for 10-15 minutes. Quite a show!

Many areas of Antigua have been cut off due to flooding but during the calm
periods most of the creeks subsided and vehicles were able to reach most
areas. We were able to relieve out staff at Radio Lighthouse but
unfortunately our weather instruments were knocked out during the lightning
storm. Here in Lightfoot we have measured 10 - 1/4 inches of rain since
8:00 a.m. and 2-1/2 inches in past 45 minutes.

Thankfully, in Antigua flooded areas quickly drain and as soon as the skies
clear things will be quickly be back to normal. Though I am beginning to
wonder what "normal" is!

One for the books!

Another rainy night. Our rain gauge at home overflowed at 5 inches (since
9:00 p.m.), but just checked at Radio Lighthouse and our total there has
been 10.84 inches in past 20 hours and still raining hard. Wind gusts up to
38mph, mostly from the SE. Electricity is off here in the Lightfoot area.

The south side of Antigua is cut off due to flooding in several areas and we
have an unconfirmed report of a house destroyed by a mud slide in Bolands.
Two of our staff members have been riding this out at the station (one with
their family - their home in Crab hill was destroyed by Jose) and I hope
they have enough food to last until the ark rests on Mount Arrarat!

Hope I can find a good book to read because it doesn't look like we will be
going to work soon.

Well, Lenny seems loathe to leave us.  Looking out to sea from my direction, I must concurr with Martha, last night worst yet for rain and slightly increased wind.  Must be even noisier on a tin roof.  Reports indicate Lenny weakening (see central pressure rising) but can't` prove it by state of sea.  Seas outside the bay are wilder than yesterday, although surf not much higher inside protection of the bay.

Finally got some sleep off and on during this hellish night... the winds are still whipping all around us...I know they are not hurricane force but they sure sound wicked...and the rain continues... was able to walk around my garden a bit just now and can hear the birds (did not have one bird for months after LUIS...)  so know it is not that bad...  cant tell if there is any damage yet...did not go that far around
LENNY is now  5 a.m. 18.1 and 62.8  --since the 2 a.m. only moved from 18 and 62.9 and they say LENNY IS STATIONARY and will just not move... so we are in for continued battering for some hours... have not heard the local radio info so will get back to you when I do but I sure cant see our airport opening in this... last night the radio said for the airport workers to come to work..but I bet that is canned..
This thing just goes on and on...   those poor  people in the islands getting hit the worst...my heart really does go out to them.. so much damage...

It's pouring in St. John's. A little bit of thunder and lightening too.
The location of Lenny at 2:00am was Latitude 18.0 North Longitude 62.9 west.
When I thought it had completely missed us......it started going lightly to
the south.....I guess we are not totally out of danger yet!!!
Outside Woods Mall in St. John's, are couple of cars in the middle of a
"river" with the water up to the windows.
Inside the Mall, the corridors are flooded. I think this part of town is
the worse I've seen tonight!!! Went driving around earlier and everywhere
seemed quiet. Some water in a few areas but nothing to talk about.
I may get out of here pretty soon, I don't have the energy to mop any
longer......and most of all I need some rest!!!

  • From: "MARTHA WATKINS GILKES" <gilkesm AT candw.ag>
  • Date: Fri, 19 Nov 1999 02:26:51 -0500
POURING HEAVY HARD RAIN HERE ON EAST COAST... SURE IT IS WORSE ON WEST COAST... IT JUST WOKE ME UP... SOME GUSTY RAINS...

Earlier  - around 1 p.m.   our radio station had advised (via met office)  that this thing was turning and would come very close to us... so felt I better move my computer downstairs...  big job to take itall apart and then could not get connections back correctly...(FINALLY DID IT VIA PHONE WITH MY WONDERFUL COMPUTER SERVICE GUY)!! so was off line for some time... then Internet server had problems at one point... and I have been so dead tired   (literally no sleep in 2 days except for about one hour..)  finally went to sleep soon after 10  (think I must have fallen asleep AT MY KEY BOARD    ...thus crazy MSG John fuller!!  glad I was not out driving... but would love sunshine and hot water TOMORROW ..  WAS THAT WHAT I WAS TRYING TO SAY!?)...
On earlier (around 1 PM)  our  Met Office report they stressed Antigua was "not out of the woods"   but that is was looking like we would only get storm force and not hurricane force winds..  and indeed it looks like we are spared what those other poor islands have suffered for so long....   As I said it is POURING RAIN now..
late afternoon between windy squalls my COCKATOO FLEW HOME....but only to be given an apple and back she went into the wild wind... if I  had a video of her landing/ taking off  into that wind ( with an apple in her mouth)     it would surely be on Discovery!!!   so she is battering the elements tonight again..but this is not like JOSE was so I guess she will cope... could see the distant tree she landed in and then watched her  climb down to a big V in the branches about 4 feet off the ground!!!
Met Office also says weather will start to improve tomorrow...  Am so thankful Antigua not as badly hurt as it could be... I know there is more damage on the other side of the island ---but not what a CAT 4 with a direct hit would have caused...

Hello from Antigua:

Winds in Sea View Farm at about 12 mid are kicking up a bit. About 30
mph gusting winds rain and thunder......... Stronger at times. Lenny
has been most fortunate to us, so far, with some rain and flooding in
areas , but calm during most of the day.. But , we are keeping alert
because this is such a unique storm.

As of 11pm EST Lenny was located at 18.2 N and 63.1 W, close enough for
us to feel some of the Tropical storm effects. We will keep watch...

Things have quieted down here on the South side of Antigua. I has been a
pretty windy, rainy afternoon. 2.30 inches of rain have fallen at Radio
Lighthouse and wind gusts of 39 mph recorded. Thankfully we have not had to
endure (this time) what is happening further north. I hope the evening
stays quiet. I fear what tomorrow may reveal from the Northern Leewards and
Virgin Is. Radio Lighthouse will be staying on the air all night to provide
spiritual comfort to our listeners in those islands.

Dear friends

A quick note to let you know that we will be posting post hurricane photos and reports again at http://AntiguaToday.com/hurricanes (our hurricane hotline). Hopefully there will be nothing to report. Currently we are hunkered down waiting to find out. I've started a diary of Lenny there for those that are interested. So far it has some info on preparations, anticipations and observations. At least it's in place if we have anything serious to report. My mother called in a panic. Apparently press in England is full of stories about the islands being smashed by a killer hurricane. Lets hope we don't get a rash of unnecessary cancellations. So far there has been little activity in Hodges Bay. It rained, then stopped, then rained, then stopped again. That's not exactly exciting, but I like it that way. Lets hope it lasts.

Talking of photos, last week I added a page of post Jose sunsets & other images to our Antigua Virtual Card Center. I guess I'll be adding some others soon

Hi.

Not much to reprt from my nd of Antigua. Lots of rain, LOTS OF RAIN> Lower
Fort Road was like a river earlier today. I probably could have gone
kayaking on the road. Most of it has subsided by now, although it is still
trickling down.

The 3PM 17-nov report has the eye at 18N so hopefully it keeps to its ENE
track as predicted. Not a whole lot to do today. Fortunately, we still
have power so at least we can see/read :-)

Later...

We have just had a rather serious radio report with the 1 p.m. status of  this dangerous hurricane LENNY... it is now 17.9 and 63.2...that means it has moved 12 miles closer to us....not good news... It is now 95 miles due west of Barbuda and 100 miles northwest of Antigua.   The hurricane winds extend out 70 miles so it is only about 30 miles away from us...however the system is hardly moving... so they cannot  tell us when it may be with us...we still hope for a miracle of a turn but it is looking worse for us and our surrounding islands...   I am going to move downstairs now...have remained on my computer upstairs but think it is time to move...
will be busy for some time....so hope I am back to you later...

I am in St. John's and we are not experiencing any winds on this side of
the island.
It has been raining quite heavy for the last five or six hours but that is
all so far.
The latest news I have is that the winds are now at about 135mph but it's
still a category four. It's not moving much to any direction but is
expected to go east-northeast to northeast.
I will be back when I get any more information.

Just returned from a drive around the south side of Antigua. There has been
a lot of beach erosion at Ffreys and Darkwood with the bar at Darkwood
almost totally undermined. Heavy waves are still doing their damage. We
have had almost 2-1/2 inches of rain at Radio Lighthouse (between Bolands
and Jennings) in the last 24 hour and a lot of heavy rain bands over the
past couple of hours with some thunder. We recorded .69 inches of rain in
the past hour with wind gusts up to 32 mph. It is going to be a long day
for a lot of people in the islands!

It would appear that "Wrong-Way" Lenny is slowing its movement and aiming East once again, which will keep ANU under its influence for a longer time.  Bad for the north but here at HMB, conditions appear no worse than they have been.  The seas outside the Bay are running pretty high even here in the southeast but the surf in the protection of the bay not much higher than usual.  Still have electric and phones (fingers crossed here) Hopefully, the storm has reached a lattitude which wll keep it at a distance even on its present easterly track.

  • From: "MARTHA WATKINS GILKES" <gilkesm AT candw.ag>
  • Date: Thu, 18 Nov 1999 09:08:02 -0500
As I feared earlier...Lenny has STALLED off ST MAARTIN and SABA and  they are concerned that movement may  be  more to the EAST when it resumes... this would bring it dangerously close to Antigua....and also crossing St. Kitts/ Nevis/Montserrat and Barbuda.... a nightmare for so many islands... Our Met office has put people on stand by saying that if the movement is east it would take  around 6 hours for the eyewall to reach Antigua.  They have cancelled the call  for people to go back to work and the airport remains closed.  On the Atlantic side of the island we are not having too much bad wind yet so if the turn is not EAST we will be spared of much damage.   We can only wait and see.   The Miami Hurricane Center has said this could  be stalled for 2 days even!    more later...

Finally fell asleep for the first time in  couple of days at 3:30 after I last spoke to you... only to be awaken by that dreadful wicked  wind  I have come to know too well associated with these hurricanes...  so I guess we may not be out of the woods yet.... and I have reread the  3 am advisory and see they say the system is DRIFTING EASTWARD... although a northeast motion is expect to resume later today....  IF THIS THING COMES MORE EAST Antigua will be more affected....  we have the 5 a.m update in a few minutes.. but I fear there will  not be much movement.  Seems Lenny wants to hang around...

Title: NRL Satellite Photo /archive_data/sat/www/atlantic/tropics/vapor/LATEST.jpg tropics
This photo says it all... shows this monster that is doing so much damage to these beautiful islands... and by the grace of God Antigua is on the very edge  (it is the larger middle of the three dots just above the butterfly  -  island of Guadeloupe -  in the bottom right).....  so we are not getting such terrible winds...   I was just walking around my garden --can't see so much as it is DARK... but can tell the palm trees are not lying sideways as they have in LUIS/ GEORGE AND JOSE... and I pray God I never see that again so am not COMPLAINING... but in comparison this is not so bad...  I will add we at HALF MOONBAY are as far away as we can get from the storm being on the extreme Atlantic side of the island.... so those on the north side and around Runaway are seeing much more.... I was also down at HALF MOON BAY BEACH around sunset   (no,  we did not have a Caribbean sunset)... one of Antigua's most beautiful beaches... and it was not bad.  Waves only slightly larger than normal... again that is because we are Atlantic exposed and this is not coming from that side...  Hard to say what damage the other side of the island will have but I think we will only get garden damage around this area...and not too much structural....so will be cleaned up and back in action within a week???   Hope I am not speaking too soon...and they say the system is STALLED...nearly stationary... so  we may have more to come.  Our electricity and phones are still on...so that says a lot.  I know other parts of the island have lost it however...

Hi,

I am listening to ZDK Radio 1100. Apparently, the foreign press has been
saying that Antigua is again in the direct path. Philbert Mason is
stressing that it is ANGUILLA and NOT ANTIGUA that is in the direct path.
of this storm.

Errol George has requested that all workers report to the VC Bird
International airport for 6AM tomorrow so that all equipment can be tested
and readied to allow safe airport.

With the exception of possibly heavy rain life should be as normal
tomorrow.

Hello all,

Surprise!!! Our power came back at 12:15PM, apparently it was just a
feeder problem that has been rectified.

I am anxiously awaiting the 5PM report, it has been calm so far, no rain.
We are told that the "action" should start around 11PM. So, I have been
sleeping all day in anticipation of a sleepless night particularly in case
there is a more eastward shift in direction.

As I type this, I am listening to Radio-1 on 1000KHz from St.Thomas. There
is a call-in program and the residents have been reporting in. I guess may
our turn later tonight.

Hasta pronto...

Our met office has jut given us a good run down and what  is going on and what they hope will happen.. it looks like Antigua is spared from the worst of this thing as we are on the edges...and my heart goes out to those in the Virgin Islands .... we have been there  with terrible Hurricane Luis so know how it feels!   I have recently spent a lot of time in St. Croix and have many good friends there in the boating community and  really feel sick for them.
Seems we will be looking at worst for  us here in Antigua from around  8 p.m tonight till  8 a.m. when the eye is the closest to us... around 120 miles  away on the present track...  for Barbuda  the eye will be a bit closer.. around 100 miles and they will have stronger wind than we will have here... probably around 65 mph...     so  we may come out of this with just garden damage and shattered nerves from rushing around  (and a fender bender I told you about!!! )
However,  the met office stressed that any shift in the storm could change things for us... and also they stressed that tornadoes  may do bad damage to some areas...  so we should not be too complacent yet.
We still have electricity and phones are still working so that is good news for now!
We are presently getting wind from the south... then will be from southwest.....  west....and finally north west....that is when we will know the main body is past us....   sometime tomorrow...by mid day...should be nearly all over...
Will keep you posted off and on through the night!

Here at Half Moon Bay, St. Phillips, ANU, we have had some showery and moderately windy intervals but nothing to be alarmed about.  It would seem at this point that the southeast area of this island has lucked out over "Wrong-way Lenny"
In my years as a pilot with Pan Am, I have flown through and landed under worse conditions than we have encountered so far.  Just went for a short walk on the beach and foumd it reasonably pleasant.  Here at HMB, we have lost neither electric power or telephone contact at this time.

    - Fairly quiet so far...

    Hi,

I hope my subject does not "tempt fate". So far it has been fairly quiet.
There were some gusty/rainy conditions at 7:55AM, from 10:50AM until
11:45Am there was significant lightning (including a few ground stikes)
and thunder. It is still drizzling but there has been no wind as such.
Let's hope it stays that way.

The 11AM report looks good for Antigua so far but these storms seem to
have erratic behaviout so you can't always celebrate until they are out in
    the mid-Atlantic.

Anyway power went off at 8AM (although not everywhere) so I am on laptop
    battery power.

    Ciao for now.

Finally all locked in/ all hurricane shutters closed...with most things as secure as they can be for a cat 4 storm.... only sadness..  ONCE AGAIN... as in hurricane Jose...  is not CATCHING my free flying cockatoo,  Maxie...   she survived JOSE.... but this is a different ball game...   I tried....    I did manage  to catch about 15 of the now free flying love birds...and all  of the other 10 of my hand raised love birds are  secure... along with  a cockatoo,  an amazon and an African gray....and 3 cats!!    so the furry and feathered friends will be good company.....
meanwhile,  have had some frightening outer wind bands.....  while still outside  securing last minute things with my rasta man helper, one of these came along and  he literally ran away in fright... hope he got to his village safe!!
now it is just raining  and raining... wind not toooo bad  yet but know we are in for it... have not had time to do much research on where this thing is right now  as I quickly logged on and wanted to send something to you guys in case I lose connection... had to take my local TV antenna down and also satellite TV that gives weather channel... so  only have a local radio station as long as their power lasts...
I agree with John fuller that most did not take this  so serious  (and of course it was not such a strong storm yesterday!!)
We will hope for the best...    will be back in touch,  I hope...later..

From 11  p.m. until  3 a.m.  LENNY moved from 16.2  to 16.5..... but it has to turn more in the near future to spare "little Antigua"...  There is a definite south "breeze"  blowing now but sure does not seem like this monster is on our doorsteps....it's beautiful outside...     storm 99 tracking map wide view shows it coming right across us....yet the Forecast path tracking map has the north turn... so... WHAT IS THE TRUTH!!   guess I could be an  carib Indian  with no  information about this until it hit  (doesn't Mitchner talk about that in CARIBBEAN?)   think I better try to sleep....

I know... stupid question... no one but nature knows the true story... we are hearing so many conflicting things...   latest  Storm 99  update  (from the Hurricane center )   at 11 PM  says  DANGEROUS HURRICANE heading for Northern Leewards  (they still don't know we have individual names???  )  we had  sort of relaxed ;  it looked like we would be spared from the worst....... even took time to drive 45 minutes across island to grocery store.... and to do a little excess  stock up... but backing out  of the local store parking lot there was a car DOUBLE PARKED .... so backed INTO IT!!!      no one needs extra stress at a time like this... but then  they  never promised me a rose garden  (or did they????   (hey lawyer fuller...  aren't they wrong to be double parked.....????    anyway... couple of excess hours later ... am back home and trying to figure out what is going on with this storm.. Antigua now on hurricane WARNING ...  that means it will come to us???    who knows.. guess  everyone who predicts this has an excuse since this  is such a weird one doing what it is doing...  so we will go through the night and see what the early morning brings us.. There were lots of people at the grocery  doing what I was doing...stocking up...  so we are certainly  hurricane wise...   and  I do think, as John says   WE here in Antigua should get THE PRIZE...    back to you later...

moon's out and haloed.stars still visible.calm, hot and humid.power's off in my area-not on account of lenny.neighbour's are boarding up. not yet for us.fuel stations and supermarkets with the usual queues.honestly most are not ready but we are well practiced.lenny still barges east.we are better off than the virgen islands-they have too many yachts in the water to ensure the safety of all.they could have a real disaster.swells picking up since this afternoon but little wind-from the south.this will be a disastrous year for the sea turtle(hawksbill)nests as nearly all the eggs were washed out by jose on the east--now lenny will take the western ones.they nest on those beaches that we havent built on and on a few we have.looks like a lot of rain to understate it a bit.
of course if it does hit we shall have the exact opposite of all those before(luis, georges and jose),the wind will start from the south instead of the north and come around to the west and eventually to the north.the west will take the brunt.all the boat people are scurrying.i believe there will be a few hours in the morning to do final preps.the port is closed-no one in his right mind will be at sea in this neck of the woods for a few days.i believe we shall be in the running for the most often hurricane hit real estate in the world--is there a prize?

WE HAVE JUST BEEN ADVISED BY OUR  INTERNET PROVIDER THAT THEY HAVE SOME MAJOR PROBLEMS AND THAT AS  SOME OF THE LINKS ARE VIA   sAN jUAN  THESE  MAY  BE A PROBLEM DUE TO THE HURRICANE THERE.... SO THEY HAVE FOREWARNED US THAT WE MAY NOT BE ABLE TO BE IN TOUCH... SO IF YOU DONT HEAR AS MUCH AS WE ARE NORMALLY  ABLE TO SEND YOU IN A HURRICANE SITUATION IT IS NOT FOR LACK OF TRYING....    I PERSONALLY FEEL THIS IS A SERIOUS HURRICANE AND AM NOT DOWNPLAYING IT AND FEEL THAT ANTIGUA WILL HAVE SOME ILL EFFECTS... THANK GOODNESS WE ARE GETTING TO BE OLD HANDS AT THIS AND WILL BOUNCE BACK QUICKLY,  I AM SURE...  but it sure is getting to be a drag!!!     more...hopefully later....

IT IS A STILL STILL BALMY CARIBBEAN NIGHT... not a puff of air....THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM as we have seen many times now!   AT LAST THE Weather Channel is  "sort of" talking about us....at least as the Northern leewards... but dont they know we have NAMES TOO... like US islands do!!!  even if this thing turns more to the north we are going to get some of it...and it is now a CAT 3 hurricane with 115 mph winds... so I think Antigua is in for another licking!!!!    Most people I have spoken to are taking it seriously....and I am nearly battened down...now going to make a last run to the grocery store for a few more supplies....never hurts... and will be back to you later....

    Hi all,

Well just when we thought it was definitely all over, LENNY appears
squiggling from the Western Caribbean Sea to give us some more headaches.
Most of us simply cannot fathom that in less than one month at the very
end of the hurricane season, we are under watches and warnings!

Well I will be posting again throughout this one. I am just hoping that it
maintains it projected track. After JOSE, I have lost a bit of faith in
the "projected tracks" for the hurricanes at this time of the year.

The Antigua government has put us on a hurricane watch and we may be put on a hurricane warning soon... that would mean it is expected within 24 hours....   I am taking all precautions now   (putting up some shutters/   CATCHING MY BIRDS.... AGAIN... )  and  moving things that can blow... they say we will start getting heavy rain tonight so  it may not be easy to do things in the morning..    we are still hoping for north turn but  not looking so promising right now...
      back to work...

at 5 am this morning we had one of the most beautiful dawns you can imagine.it has never been clearer.the sky looked like a Turner paintig.the sea is mirror-like,impossibly calm, the air with a hint of coolness reminding of the winter.yet Lenny approaches from the west!the combination of its direction and the time of year is unheard of and "its impossible" is the most common phrase one is hearing.its been 7&1/2 weeks since jose's eye perused us so we're well practiced in battening down.what mad climactic twists bring a huuricane EAST in NOVEMBER?
our size, our lack of natural resources and our high suceptibility to natural disasters make a good argument for special treatment in international fora.
the island is incredibly green-since jose we've had endless rain-all the migrant waterfowl are well looked after, especially the ducks.with a bit of luck(bad luck for those north of us) lenny will turn north today and we'll only get a swipe.undoubtedly the coast will get bashed again.more later.

It seems impossible.....but LENNY has not only developed but has TURNED DUE EAST .....at 4 a.m.  this morning...MONDAY.....  he was at 15.4 and 77.1   moving DUE EAST... (Antigua is 17.1)...  and winds are up to 100 MPH...  Model do project a north turn...but not sure when!!   Everybody thought it was over!  So once again... we better watch this one real close....at least we have a bit more notice here in Antigua than we did with JOSE ....
